Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday warmly welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin as he kick-started a nearly 27-hour visit to India to further shore up an eight-decade bilateral partnership that remained in firm footing notwithstanding fractious geopolitical upheavals.
In reflection of the importance India attached to the Russian leader's first visit to India in four years, Modi received him at New Delhi's Palam airport with a hug amid a group of artistes performing traditional dances.
From the airport, the two leaders travelled to Modi's official residence in his car, nearly three months after the prime minister rode with Putin in the Russian leader's vehicle in Chinese city of Tianjin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
"Delighted to welcome my friend, President Putin to India. Looking forward to our interactions later this evening and tomorrow. India-Russia friendship is a time tested one that has greatly benefited our people," the prime minister said on social media.
In the evening, Modi hosted a private dinner for the Russian president in a reciprocal gesture to the hospitality extended to the prime minister by Putin during his visit to Moscow in July last year. Modi's official residence was decorated with bright lights and flowers on the occasion.
The conversation between the two leaders over the dinner is expected to set the tone for the 23rd India-Russia summit talks on Friday that is expected to produce a number of tangible outcomes to further broadbase the time-tested relationship.
Boosting defence ties, insulating India-Russia trade from external pressure and exploring cooperation in small modular reactors are set to be the focus of the summit between the two leaders that is expected to be closely watched by Western capitals.
The Russian leader's visit to New Delhi has assumed greater significance as it is taking place against the backdrop of rapid downturn in India-US relations.
Following the summit, the two sides are expected to seal several agreements including in areas of trade.
On Friday, Putin will be accorded a ceremonial welcome and a tri-services guard of honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan, before he goes to Raj Ghat to pay homage at the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi.
It will be followed by talks between the two leaders in a restricted format and with their delegations at Hyderabad House, the venue for the summit.
Modi and Putin will also attend a business event jointly organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and Roscongress at Bharat Mandapam.
In the evening, Putin will attend a state banquet to be hosted in his honour by President Droupadi Murmu. The Russian leader is expected to leave India at around 9 pm on Friday.
In the summit talks, New Delhi is expected to press for addressing the increasing trade deficit caused by India's procurement of large volumes of Russian crude oil.
The Russian president's trip to India is taking place at a time when India-US relations are going through possibly the worst phase in the last two decades after Washington imposed a whopping 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, including 25 per cent levies for New Delhi's procurement of Russian crude oil.
The impact of American sanctions on India's procurement of Russian crude oil is likely to be discussed at the summit. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday said New Delhi's purchase of crude oil from Russia may decline for "a brief period" in view of Western sanctions, but, at the same time, he said Moscow is taking steps to enhance the supplies.
At the summit, Putin is expected to apprise Modi about the latest US efforts to bring an end to the Ukraine conflict. India has been consistently maintaining that dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward to end the war.
Following the Modi-Putin talks, the two sides are expected to ink a plethora of agreements, including one on facilitating the movement of Indian workers to Russia, and another on logistical support under a broader framework of defence cooperation.
It is learnt that under the trade basket, Indian exports to Russia are expected to significantly increase in areas of pharma, agriculture, food products and consumer goods.
The move comes amid concerns in New Delhi over a ballooning trade deficit in favour of Russia.
India's annual procurement of goods and services from Russia amounts to around USD 65 billion, while Russia's imports from India stand at around USD 5 billion. Officials said India is also looking at boosting cooperation in the fertiliser sector. Russia supplies three to four million tonnes of fertilisers to India annually.
The Indian and Russian sides are also likely to discuss New Delhi's proposed free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union.
Ahead of the summit, the defence ministers of the two countries held wide-ranging talks on Thursday with a focus on India's plan to procure additional batches of S-400 missile systems and other critical military hardware from Russia.
The S-400 missile systems proved to be very effective during Operation Sindoor.
In October 2018, India signed a USD 5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems, notwithstanding a warning by the US that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions under the provisions of Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
Peskov said there may be a discussion on the possibility of Russia supplying Su-57 fighter jets to India. India is in the process of procuring a batch of fifth-generation fighter jets.
Dassault Aviation's Rafale, Lockheed Martin's F-21, Boeing's F/A-18 and the Eurofighter Typhoon are the main contenders.
Ways to bolster bilateral energy ties are also expected to figure prominently in the summit.
It is learnt that Russia has offered India additional discounts for its procurement of crude oil.
The offer came after the volume of India's purchase of Russian crude oil registered a decline in the last few weeks following the latest wave of US sanctions on two Russian oil producers.
India and Russia have a mechanism under which India's prime minister and the Russian president hold a summit meeting annually to review the entire gamut of ties. In the context of India's energy ties with Russia, Putin said certain "actors" dislike New Delhi's growing role in international markets in view of its close relations with Moscow and these elements are aiming to constrain India's influence for political reasons by imposing "artificial obstacles".
In an interview to India Today news channel that was released on Thursday evening, the Russian president, referring to Western sanctions against Moscow, said his country's energy cooperation with New Delhi largely "remains unaffected".
Putin landed in New Delhi this evening on a two-day visit to hold summit talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Neither me nor Prime Minister Modi, despite certain external pressure we face, have never approached our collaboration to work against someone," the Russian president said in response to a question on Washington's aggressive approach.
"President Trump has his own agenda, his own goals, whereas we focus on ours -- not against anyone, but rather aimed at safeguarding our respective interests, India's and Russia's interests," he said.
Rejecting Washington's objection to India procuring crude oil from Russia, Putin said if the US has the right to buy Russian fuel, why "shouldn't India have the same privilege".
"As for India's purchase of energy resources from Russia, I would like to note and have already mentioned this once, the US itself still buys nuclear fuel from us for its own nuclear power plants," Putin said.
The Russian president also responded to a question on India lowering procurement of crude oil from Russia in view of Western sanctions on Moscow.
"Well, there is a certain decline in overall trade turnover during the first nine months of this year. This is just a minor adjustment. Overall, our trade turnover stands almost at the same level as before," he said.
"I can't give you exact monthly figures right now, but trade in petroleum products and crude oil, as well as the production of petroleum products for consumers of oil, Russian oil, is running smoothly in India," he said.
Putin also said that India cannot be treated the way it was several decades back.
"Prime Minister Modi is not someone who succumbs to pressure easily. The Indian people can certainly take pride in their leader. This is absolutely obvious," he said.
"His stance is unwavering and straightforward, without being confrontational. Our goal is not to provoke conflict; rather, we aim to protect our lawful rights. India does the same," he said.
On the Ukraine conflict, Putin said he believed the US is actively seeking a solution to this problem.
"I am absolutely certain, with no doubt at all, he (Trump) sincerely aims for a peaceful resolution."
Putin said Trump genuinely wants to end the hostilities and prevent further loss of lives.
"But there could also be political interests tied to ending the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, or economic motives too."
On bilateral trade, Putin said over 90 per cent of "our transactions are already conducted in national currencies".
"While some complications arise due to the presence of numerous intermediaries, there are also solutions," he said.
The Russian president also complimented PM Modi's leadership.
"Our collaborative endeavours with Prime Minister Modi carry significant weight because they transcend our mutual ties," he said.
"Given its direct relevance to both nations, ensuring stability in key areas of engagement is crucial, as it helps secure the fulfilment of our objectives. Prime Minister Modi sets very challenging tasks for the country --and for himself in the first place, then for the administration, and eventually for the nation," he said.
The Russian president did not give a direct reply to a question on if India was looking at procuring additional batches of S-400 missile systems.
"India stands out as one of our reliable and privileged partners in this area. We are not merely selling something to India and India isn't merely buying something from us in the sphere of defence and security.
"It is a different level, a different quality of relations we have with India, and we value this. We see how India values this relationship too," he said.
Putin said Russia is not simply selling defence technology to India but it is sharing it with the country.
"It is a very rare thing to see in the sphere of military-technical cooperation. It speaks to the level of trust between the two countries and the level of trust between the two peoples.
"We have a broad portfolio indeed, including naval construction, rocket and missile engineering, and aircraft engineering," he added.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that President Trump has brokered several peace deals, including the very dangerous ones like India and Pakistan, and deserves tremendous credit for reshaping America's foreign policy.

"Now Mr. Rubio has once again reminded the world of what Mr. Trump has been saying repeatedly. No wonder the Modi-Trump huglomacy is in deep freeze," Ramesh said.
During a Cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Rubio said for the first time in decades, American foreign policy was guided solely by whether it made the US safer, stronger and more prosperous. "If it is, he's (Trump) for it. If it doesn't, he's against it. And that sort of clarity is transformational," he said.
"Not to mention all the other peace deals, very dangerous ones like India and Pakistan or Cambodia and Thailand, and so on... Mr President, I think you deserve tremendous credit for the transformational aspect of our foreign policy," Rubio said.
Earlier, at the Cabinet meeting, Trump repeated his claim that he had resolved several global conflicts, including between India and Pakistan, as he asserted that he should get the Nobel Peace Prize for each of the "eight wars" he has ended.
"We ended eight wars... But we're going to do one more, I think, I hope," Trump said, referring to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that within the first eight-nine months of his second term in the White House, he resolved conflicts between India and Pakistan, Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Kosovo and Serbia, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Rwanda and Congo. He also credits himself for resolving the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire after a long night of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over 60 times that he helped settle the tensions between the two neighbours.
New Delhi has consistently denied any third-party intervention. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge criticised Prime Minister Modi for calling Parliament a place for delivery, calling him the &ldquo;biggest dramabaaz&rdquo; and urging the government to focus on unemployment, inflation, and economic inequality.

The Congress on Monday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi the "biggest dramabaaz" and said his statement accusing the opposition of indulging in drama in Parliament is "nothing but hypocrisy".
Congress leaders, party president Mallikarjun Kharge and general secretary Jairam Ramesh, were responding to Modi saying in his comments before the start of the Winter session that Parliament is not a place for drama but delivery.
Instead of addressing the real issue of people, Prime Minister Modi has once again made his 'dramebazi delivery", Kharge said in a statement on X.
He said the reality is that the government has been continuously trampling on parliamentary decorum and system for the past 11 years, and the long list of such instances is well-known.
"The BJP should now end this drama of distraction and engage in debate in Parliament on the real issues facing the people," Kharge said in his post.

He added that the truth is that common people are struggling with unemployment, inflation, economic inequality, and the looting of the country's precious resources, while "those in power are playing the game of dramabazi in the arrogance of authority".
In the last Monsoon session, at least 12 Bills were passed in haste, some in less than 15 minutes and some without any discussion at all, Kharge said.
"The entire country has previously witnessed how you bulldozed anti-farmer black laws, GST, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and such bills through Parliament in a frantic rush," he said.
When the Manipur issue was raised, the prime minister remained silent until the opposition brought a no-confidence motion, Kharge alleged.
"Due to SIR, BLOs are continuously losing their lives due to the workload in the process. The opposition wants to prioritize issues including 'vote theft' and we will continuously raise them in Parliament," the Congress leader added.
His party colleague Ramesh said the PM never attends Parliament, undermines it and doesn't engage with the opposition.
"Yet before every session he will stand outside the Parliament building and speak grandly to the nation asking for constructive cooperation from the Opposition to ensure the smooth functioning of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha."
"The PM's statement before Parliament begins is nothing but hypocrisy. The biggest dramabaaz of them all is talking of drama," Ramesh said in a post on X.

He said if the Parliament doesn't function smoothly, the fault is entirely that of the PM and his stubborn refusal to allow the Opposition to raise issues of urgent public importance.
"He wants to always have his way without giving the Opposition an opportunity to at least have its say," Ramesh said on X.
Hitting out at the opposition for stalling parliamentary proceedings earlier in the day, Modi said, "We need to work with a sense of responsibility. Parliament is not a place for drama, it is a place for delivery."
Referring to the drubbing of opposition parties in the Bihar polls, he said the opposition was perturbed by the electoral loss and unable to digest failure.
"For some time now, our Parliament is being used either as a warm up arena for elections or as an outlet for frustration after defeat," Modi said.
"Defeat should not be the ground to create disruption. Victory should not convert into arrogance either," the prime minister said.
The opposition too should fulfil its responsibility and come out of its depression after loss in elections, he said, adding that that must come out of ths frustration.
"They should change their strategy - I am ready to give them a few tips," the PM said.

Parliament is not a place for drama, it is a place for delivery, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday in a hard-hitting attack on the opposition and accused it of turning the House into a "warm up arena" for elections or as an outlet to vent out frustration after defeat.
Speaking to reporters outside Parliament ahead of the Winter session, he said the session must not become a stage for political theatrics but a platform for constructive and result-driven debate, and offered to give the opposition tips to bring positivity in politics.
"We need to work with a sense of responsibility. Parliament is not a place for drama, it is a place for delivery," Modi said, hitting out at the opposition for stalling parliamentary proceedings.
The Monsoon session of Parliament was virtually washed out over opposition protests on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The opposition has also threatened to stall the Winter session of Parliament over the SIR exercise in nine states and three union territories, if the issue was not discussed in Parliament.
"For some time now, our Parliament is being used either as a warm up arena for elections or as an outlet for frustration after defeat," Modi said.

The record turnout witnessed in Bihar elections is the biggest strength of democracy, he said, adding the opposition too should fulfil its responsibility and come out of its depression after loss in elections.

"They should change their strategy - I am ready to give them a few tips," Modi said.
He urged all parties to recognise the purpose of Parliament and "come out of the frustration of defeat."
Prime Minister Modi added that he had heard statements of leaders of certain Opposition parties which suggest their inability to accept electoral outcome.
"There are one or two parties that are unable to accept their defeat. From the statements I heard yesterday, it seems that the loss has deeply troubled them," he said.
The prime minister also said that opportunities should be given to the new generation of young Members of Parliament.
"The House should benefit from their experiences, and through this House, the nation should also gain from their fresh perspective," Modi said.

"Previous governments used to sit idle after terror attack but new India neither bows nor hesitates from protecting its people," the Prime Minister said addressing people in the temple town of Udupi.
He was in Udupi to take part in the "Laksha Kantha Gita Parayana," where one lakh people recited Srimad Bhagwad Gita. The event was organised by Sri Krishna Math in Udupi.
"Gita teaches us to strive for peace and truth and also the need to crush perpetrators of atrocities. We believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (Mother earth as one family) and also recite 'Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitaha' (Dharma protects those who protect Dharma)."
Recalling the Pahalgam terror attack in April this year in which 26 persons, mostly tourists, were killed, Modi said people from Karnataka were among the victims.
He said the nation saw the government's resolve during Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the ghastly incident where precision attacks were carried out on terror launchpads in Pakistan.
"We give Krishna's message of compassion from Red Fort and also announce Mission Sudarshan Chakra," he said.
Explaining, he said Mission Sudarshan Chakra provides a security wall around key locations, industrial and public places.
Hailing Udupi, he said the town presented a new governance model five decades ago, which today guides national policies on cleanliness and water supply.
Lauding Swami Vishwesha Teertha of Pejavara Math of Udupi, he said the whole nation knows how big was his role in the Ram Janma Bhoomi movement.
His guidance to the temple movement led to flag hoisting at Ram temple in Ayodhya recently, he said.
Modi told the gathering that Ram temple in Ayodhya is significant for Udupi because a special arch gate has been built dedicated to Sri Madhwacharya, the founder of Madhwa sect of Dwaita (dualism) philosophy.
Speaking about the important of Bhagwad Geeta in public life, Modi said its teachings have been relevant in every era as it continues to give direction to formulate national policies.
"Lord Sri Krishna tells us in Gita to work for public welfare. Slogans like 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas' and 'Sarvajan Hitaya' are inspired by the verses of Geeta. It tells us to help poor which helped us lay foundation for policies like Ayushman and PM Awaas Yojana," Modi said.
The Prime Minister said the lessons on women safety and women empowerment from the life of Bhagwad Gita guided the Centre to formulate "Naari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam" (Women's Reservation Act).
Earlier, Modi visited the historic Kanaka Mantap, here and offered floral tributes to Kirthanakar Kanakadasa, the revered 14th-15th century AD saint-philosopher.
Kanakadasa is credited with the legendary episode of Lord Krishna's idol turning westward at the Udupi Sri Krishna Temple.
Later, the Prime Minister participated in the "Laksha Gita Pathana" accompanied by Paryaya Puthige Math seer, Sugunendra Thirtha, Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot and others. The PM read out the hymns.
Modi also offered prayers at the Sri Krishna Temple, where he was received with traditional honours by Sugunendra Thirtha, along with the Diwan of the Math and senior temple officials.
The PM spent time inside the sanctum precincts, acknowledging the significance of Kanakadasa's devotion and the enduring cultural legacy associated with the temple.
He was given a Poorna Kumbh swagatham (welcome with traditional honours) as he entered the Krishna Math precincts.
He was presented with a silver clad Tulasi Japa maala and Mudras containing Shankha, Chakra , Gada, and Padma, which the Madhwas and most of the Brahmin communities use for their daily Pooja rituals in South India.
Modi had visited the Krishna temple in 2008 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Even then, the same Swamiji was the administrative head of the Krishna Math.
Upon his arrival at the temple town, Modi held a grand road show.
The PM landed at the Mangaluru Airport and proceeded to Udupi by a helicopter.
Standing on the running board of his vehicle, Modi waved at the enthusiastic gathering, which showered his convoy with flower petals.
Modi reciprocated by throwing flowers back at the people waiting on either side of the road.
Saffron festoons and BJP flags dotted the route.
The celebratory atmosphere was further elevated by performances from various cultural troupes that showcased the vibrant traditions of coastal Karnataka.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will undertake a two-day visit to India from December 4 to hold annual summit talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that is expected to produce significant outcomes to further solidify the bilateral strategic ties.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), announcing the visit, said on Friday that it will set the vision for strengthening the India-Russia 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership'.
"At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin will pay a State visit to India from December 4 to 5 for the 23rd India-Russia annual summit," it said.
President Droupadi Murmu will also receive Putin and host a banquet in his honour.

"The forthcoming State visit will provide an opportunity for the leadership of India and Russia to review progress in bilateral relations, set the vision for strengthening the 'Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership' and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest," the MEA said in a brief statement.
The focus of the Modi-Putin talks are expected to focus on deepening cooperation in areas of defence and security, trade and civil nuclear energy.
The Ukraine conflict is also likely to figure prominently in the talks.
India is looking at procuring additional batches of S-400 surface-to-air missile systems from Russia as the weapons proved to be very effective during the Operation Sindoor. It is learnt that the proposed procurement may figure in the talks between the two sides.
India and Russia have a mechanism under which India's prime minister and the Russian president hold a summit meeting annually to review the entire gamut of ties.
So far 22 annual summit meetings have taken place alternatively in India and Russia.
The upcoming summit is expected to produce significant outcomes to further solidify bilateral strategic ties, people familiar with the matter said.
The Russian president had last visited New Delhi in 2021. In July last year, PM Modi travelled to Moscow for the annual summit.
Russia has been a time-tested partner for India and the country has been a key pillar of New Delhi's foreign policy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday virtually inaugurated Indian space startup Skyroot's Infinity Campus, in Hyderabad, and also unveiled the company's first orbital rocket Vikram-I, which has capability to launch satellites to orbit.
In his address, the PM highlighted the government's 'historic' space reforms and said that opening up the space sector to private players has resulted in Skyroot and others coming up with such innovations.
The PM said that today in India's space ecosystem, private sector was emerging with flying colours. Over 300 space startups were giving new hopes to the sector. "The Infinity Campus is a reflection of India's new thought, innovation and the the bigger youth power. Youth's innovation, risk taking ability and entrepreneurship are touching new heights," the PM noted.
Today, the country's space sector was becoming attractive for global investors. India's private space talent was making its own identity across the globe. He traced the journey of the Indian space programme from its nascent stages-- where rocket parts were moved in a bicycle, to building the "most trusted launch vehicle."
The journey might have started with limited resources but the growth proved determination decides dreams, Modi said. In these changing times, space sector is expanding so much, covering the areas of communication, weather prediction, urban planning and national security, among others.
"So that is why we have made historic reforms in space sector, opened it up to the private sector, made new space policy. Startups and industry were linked with innovation, set up In-Space," he said. He further said plans were there to open up the nuclear sector also to private players.
Skyroot's state-of-the-art facility will have around two lakh sq.ft. workspace for designing, developing, integrating and testing multiple launch vehicles, with a capacity to build one orbital rocket every month. Skyroot is India's leading private space company, founded by Pawan Chandana and Bharath Dhaka, both IIT alumni and former scientists of ISRO.
In November 2022, Skyroot launched its sub-orbital rocket, Vikram-S, becoming the first Indian private company to do so. The rapid rise of private space enterprises is a testament to the success of the transformative reforms carried out by the NDA Government in the last few years, reinforcing India's leadership as a confident and capable global space power, an official release had earlier said.
In his address, Modi recalled that India's space journey started with limited resources, but its ambitions were never limited. For decades, ISRO has given new wings to India&rsquo;s space journey, he said, and stressed that credibility, capacity, and value have established India's distinct identity in the sector.
The space agency's facilities and technologies were made available to the startups, he said, pointing out that India's space sector has been transformed into an open, cooperative and innovation-driven eco-system in the last six-seven years.
He said India's youth keeps national interest paramount and properly utilises every opportunity. When the government opened the space sector, the country's youth and especially the Gen Z came forward to make full utilisation of it, he said.
"Today, over 300 Indian space startups are giving new hopes to India's space future. Even in this, most of the space startups started with small teams and I had the opportunity to meet them. Teams were small, there were limited resources, but the intentions were to reach great heights," he said, adding this spirit gave birth to the private space revolution in India.
The Prime Minister said today, Gen Z engineers, Gen Z designers, Gen Z coders and Gen Z scientists are making new technologies. Be it the propulsion system, composite materials, rocket stages, satellite platforms, India's youth are working in areas that were unimaginable a few years ago, he said.

Addressing a gathering after hoisting a saffron flag atop the Ram temple to mark the ceremonial completion of its construction, Modi said the moment symbolised a cultural resurgence for the nation.
"Today, the entire nation and the world are immersed in Ram. Centuries-old wounds are healing, centuries-long pain is finding closure, as the resolve that burned for 500 years finally reached its fulfilment," Modi said.
Calling the flag-hoisting "a unique and divine moment", the prime minister said the sacred flag atop the Ram temple would stand as a testimony to the fact that "truth ultimately triumphs over falsehood".
Congratulating all the Ram devotees and those who contributed to the temple's construction, Modi said Ayodhya had always been the land where ideals transformed into conduct.
Recalling the journey of Lord Ram, Modi said, "Ram left as a prince but returned as 'Maryada Purushottam'. The wisdom of sages, the guidance of mentors, the friendship of Nishad Raj, the devotion of Shabari, and the commitment of countless others shaped him. A developed India will need this same collective strength too."
The prime minister also said that India must look beyond the present and plan for future generations. "Those who think only of today are unfair to the coming generations. The country existed when we were not here, and it will still remain when we won't be here," Modi said.
The journey to a developed India by 2047 requires awakening the Ram "within us", Modi said. "Ram is not a person but a value, a discipline and a direction," he noted.
Reiterating the need to free the country from the "mentality of slavery", Modi said India must take pride in its civilisational identity. "Macaulay sowed the seeds of uprooting India from its roots 190 years ago. We gained Independence but not freedom from inferiority," he said, adding that the next 10 years should be dedicated to reversing this mindset.
Modi also said that colonial-era distortions led to the belief that India borrowed democracy from abroad. "India is the mother of democracy. It is in our DNA," he said, citing a thousand-year-old inscription in Tamil Nadu that documents democratic practices.
Modi said this mindset influenced even national symbols, prompting the recent redesign of the Navy's flag. "It was not just a design change; it was a change in thinking," he said.
On Ayodhya, Modi said the city is once again emerging as a model blend of antiquity and modernity. "The Ayodhya of the Treta Yuga gave humanity its moral code. The Ayodhya of the 21st century is giving the world a new model of development," Modi said, highlighting the city's new airport, upgraded railway station and improved connectivity.
The prime minister also said that nearly 45 crore devotees have visited the temple since its consecration, bringing "significant economic transformation" to the region.
Pointing to India's economic progress, Modi said: "After 70 years of Independence, India became the world's 11th largest economy. But in the last 11 years, we have become the fifth largest. The day is not far when we will become the third largest."
Invoking the metaphor of Ram's chariot in the battle against Ravan, he said India's development journey too required patience, truth, good conduct, strength and compassion. "We need a similar chariot to accelerate the journey of a developed India," he said.
The vision of Ram Rajya must guide India's future, the prime minister said, adding, "This is possible only when national interest comes before self interest, and remains supreme."

When Narendra Modi assumed leadership in 2014, it ignited a "sunrise of resolve and faith" in the hearts of millions, he said.

He added that the flag atop the Ram temple symbolised truth, justice, dignity and national dharma.
"It also represents the vision of a developed India because there is no alternative to resolve. In the last 11 years, we have all witnessed a transforming India. We now see an India where heritage and development coexist in perfect harmony, taking the nation to new heights," Adityanath said.
The chief minister also said that over the past 500 years, generations and regimes changed but the faith of the people in Lord Ram "neither stopped nor bowed."
The unwavering belief persisted, and when the struggle came under the leadership of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a single resolve echoed across the movement -- "Ramlala hum aayenge, mandir wahin banayenge", "laathi-goli khayenge, par mandir wahin banayenge", he said.
Adityanath also said there was a time when Ayodhya had fallen into neglect and disorder, but under Prime Minister Modi's, it has transformed into a "global spiritual capital".

The ceremony is taking place on the auspicious Panchami of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Margashirsha, coinciding with the Abhijit Muhurat of Ram and Sita's Vivah Panchami, a day signifying divine union, the prime minister's office said in a statement on Monday.

&ldquo;The grand saffron flag to be hoisted on the temple's &lsquo;shikhar&rsquo; by the Honourable Prime Minister, in the august presence of the RSS Sarsanghchalak, is a symbol of our religious and cultural revival,&rdquo; he said.
Calling the Ram temple the &ldquo;Rashtra Mandir&rdquo;, he described the flag as representing the invincibility of truth, the immortality of faith and the resurgence of culture.

Adityanath said the ceremony at the Ram temple &ndash; one of the Saptpuris &ndash; is infusing "indomitable spiritual energy" across the country.

Welcoming Modi to Ayodhya, the chief minister described him as "the world's most popular leader and the architect of New India".

From the crack of dawn, chants of "Jai Shri Ram" echoed across the city as visiting seers and pilgrims termed the hoisting of the temple flag -- a sacred ceremony called "Dhwaj Arohan" -- one of historic fulfilment.
Swami Narottamanand Giri, who arrived from Dalmau in Rae Bareli, said, "It is a day of immense fortune. This moment has come after great 'tapasya', and participating in the 'dhwaj arohan' is a matter of deep blessing."
Ninety-five-year-old seer Devendranand Giri, who has witnessed the temple movement since its early days, said he never imagined he would see this moment in his lifetime. "At this age, watching the temple stand completed gives me unparalleled joy," he told PTI Videos.
Gopal Rao, a special invitee to the Ram Mandir Trust, said the ceremony will be conducted by Prime Minister Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. "The rituals are complete. The prime minister will enter the premises at 10 am and stay till around 1.30 pm. 'Darshan', 'pooja', 'dhwaj arohan' and an address will all take place during this period," he said.
Rao added that depending on the timing of the programme, darshan for the public may resume from Tuesday evening, "otherwise, devotees will certainly get darshan from Wednesday".
Among those who arrived early was an elderly devotee. "This moment has come after 500 years. Our ancestors waited and sacrificed for this day. We are blessed to witness it," he said.
Another pilgrim expressed similar sentiment, calling the occasion "a blessing made possible by the sacrifices of generations".
Inside the temple, the priests have been conducting rituals for the last four days. Priest Bajrang Pandey said the concluding phase of the 'yagya' was underway. "From 7 am to 9 am, the remaining 'ahutis' are being offered. After the prime minister's programme, the 'yagya' will resume. Scholars from across the country -- Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra -- are present along with and local Vedic experts," Pandey said.
The city remained under a heavy security blanket, with extensive checking of incoming vehicles and questioning of passengers at all entry points. According to officials, 6,970 personnel, including ATS commandos, NSG snipers, cyber experts and specialised technical teams, have been deployed in the temple town. Anti-drone systems and advanced surveillance technology are active in and around the temple complex.
Senior officers are supervising crowd management, security screening, explosives detection and emergency response systems, while bomb squads, dog squads, VVIP protection units, fire personnel and rapid response teams are stationed at key points.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday embarked on a three-day visit to South Africa to attend the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, and said he will present India's perspective at the forum in line with its vision of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and 'One Earth, One Family and One Future'.&nbsp;
This is the first time a G20 Summit is being held on the African continent.
"Will be attending the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. This is a particularly special Summit as it is being held in Africa. Various global issues will be discussed there. Will be meeting various world leaders during the Summit," Modi posted on X.
On the margins of the summit, the prime minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with some of the leaders present in Johannesburg. He will also attend the sixth IBSA Summit there.
In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said, "I will present India's perspective at the Summit in line with our vision of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' and 'One earth, One Family and One Future'".
He is visiting South Africa from November 21-23 at the invitation of President Cyril Ramaphosa to attend the 20th G20 Leaders' Summit under South Africa&rsquo;s Presidency.
"This will be a particularly special Summit given that it would be the first G20 Summit being held in Africa. During India's Presidency of the G20 in 2023, the African Union had become a member of the G20," Modi said in his statement.
The Summit will be an opportunity to discuss key global issues. The theme of this year's G20 has been 'Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability', by which South Africa has carried forward the outcomes from the previous Summits held in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he said.
"I look forward to my interactions with leaders of the partner countries, and participation in the 6th IBSA Summit scheduled on the sidelines of the Summit," Modi said.
"During the visit, I also look forward to my interaction with the Indian diaspora in South Africa, which is one of the largest outside India," he added.
The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Modi is expected to speak in all three sessions of the Summit.
The three sessions of the Summit include "Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth Leaving No One Behind: Building our economies, the role of trade, financing for development and the debt burden".
The other two sessions are "A Resilient World &ndash; the G20's Contribution: Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, Just Energy Transitions, Food Systems"; and "A Fair and a Just Future for All: Critical Minerals, Decent Work, Artificial Intelligence".
A top official of the MEA on Thursday had said that he would not like to prejudge what would figure in the leaders' declaration, but all important matters relevant from the perspective of India and the Global South will be "highlighted by our leadership".
This will be the fourth consecutive summit of the grouping that will be held in the Global South. Before South Africa, the G20 presidencies were held by Brazil (2024), India (2023) and Indonesia (2022).
During the G20 Summit in 2023 in New Delhi, the African Union became a permanent member of the group of 20 largest economies of the world, with Prime Minister Modi announcing its entry into the grouping.
G20 members include the world's major economies, representing 85 per cent of global GDP, 75 per cent of international trade, and two-thirds of the world's population, according to the website of the G20. It comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, the UK, the US, the European Union, and the African Union.

Officials said PM Modi interacted with the injured patients, enquired about their well-being, and wished them a speedy recovery. He was also briefed by doctors and hospital authorities about the condition of those under treatment and the medical assistance being provided.
