Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday described the Budget 2026-27 as "ambitious" and "futuristic", stressing that it will further strengthen India's global role.&nbsp;
He said India&rsquo;s 140 crore citizens are not satisfied with being the fastest-growing economy and the nation is determined to soon become the world's third-largest economy.
In his televised post-budget comments on the Budget, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha, Modi said this was a unique budget, which focused on reducing fiscal deficit and controlling inflation while simultaneously ensuring high capital expenditure and high growth.
"This Budget strengthens India's global role anew. India's 140 crore citizens are not satisfied with being the fastest-growing economy, and the nation is determined to soon become the world's third-largest economy," he said.
The prime minister emphasised that this is the collective resolve of millions of Indians. He said India&rsquo;s role as a trusted democratic partner and quality supplier is continuously expanding. He underlined that recent major trade deals India has undertaken are aimed at ensuring maximum benefits for youth and small and medium enterprises, with significant steps taken in this Budget to advance that direction.
"Today's Budget is historic and reflects the empowered spirit of the nation's women. This budget is ambitious and addresses the aspirations of the nation," he said. Modi congratulated the finance minister and her team for presenting a "futuristic" and "sensitive" budget that is dedicated to the welfare of villages, the poor and farmers.
He highlighted that Sitharaman, as a woman finance minister, has set a new record by presenting the country's budget for the ninth consecutive time. The prime minister said the Budget is a highway of immense opportunities, fulfilling present dreams and strengthening the foundation of India's bright future.
He emphasised that the Budget will serve as the basis for India&rsquo;s high flight towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. Modi noted that the Reform Express on which India is riding will gain new energy and momentum through this budget.
He underlined that the path-breaking reforms provide aspiring, courageous, and talented youth with an open sky to soar. The Budget realises the vision of trust-based governance and a human-centric economic framework.
Modi said the Budget presents an ambitious roadmap to accelerate Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat campaigns with unprecedented support to sunrise sectors. These include the BioPharma Shakti Mission, Semiconductor Mission 2.0, Electronic Component Manufacturing Scheme, creation of a Rare Earth Corridor, strengthening critical minerals sector, new schemes in the textile sector, promotion of high-tech tool manufacturing, and preparation of champion MSMEs.
He added that the support extended to MSMEs, including small and cottage industries, will empower them to grow from local to global.
"The Budget takes several major steps to strengthen infrastructure, including a dedicated freight corridor, expansion of waterways across the country, a high-speed rail corridor, special focus on tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and promotion of municipal bonds to provide stronger economic foundations for cities," he said.
Modi stressed that all these measures will accelerate the journey towards a developed India. "The greatest capital of any nation is its citizens, and in recent years the government has made unprecedented investments to enhance their capabilities," he said, adding that continuous efforts have been made to strengthen skill, scale and sustainability.
Reiterating Sitharaman's statement that this is a youth power budget, Modi emphasised that the provisions made will prepare leaders, innovators, and creators across sectors. He noted that through the establishment of medical hubs, allied health professionals, promotion of the 'Orange Economy' including audio-visuals, encouragement of gaming, tourism and the Khelo India Mission, new opportunities will open for the youth.
He also said that a major tax concession has been announced to make India the world's data centre hub. Modi stated that this budget will give a significant boost to employment generation.
The prime minister expressed happiness that concrete steps have been taken to promote tourism, particularly in the Northeast, and that the foundation of balanced development has been strengthened by empowering different states.
Highlighting that more than 10 crore women are associated with self-help groups, he said the budget prioritises building a modern ecosystem for women-led and women-run self-help groups, with the aim that every household welcomes prosperity. He noted that the campaign to build new hostels for girl students in every district will make education more accessible.
Modi stressed that agriculture, dairy, and fisheries have always been given the highest priority by the government. He pointed out that in this Budget, important measures have been taken for farmers engaged in the production of coconut, cashew, cocoa, and sandalwood.
The Bharat Vistaar AI tool will greatly help farmers by providing information in their own language. He added that promoting entrepreneurship in fisheries and animal husbandry will create more employment and self-employment opportunities in villages.

The prime minister said the Budget session marked the culmination of the first quarter of the 21st century and the beginning of the next quarter.

Modi said the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union at the start of this quarter reflected the bright future of India's youth and the promising directions ahead.
"This agreement is free trade for an ambitious India, for aspirational youth, and for an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India)," he said.
The prime minister expressed firm belief that India's manufacturers will seize this opportunity to enhance their capacities.
Modi said the "mother of all deals" with the European Union has opened up a vast market and Indian goods will reach there at lower costs.
He asked industry leaders and manufacturers to guard against complacency and instead focus on quality.
Entering this open market with the best quality products will not only earn profits from buyers across 27 EU countries but also win their hearts, creating a long-lasting impact for decades, the prime minister said.
He noted that companies' brands, aligned with the nation's brand, will establish new prestige.
India and the European Union on Tuesday announced the conclusion of negotiations for the FTA, described as 'mother of all deals', under which 93 per cent of Indian shipments will enjoy duty-free access to the 27-nation bloc, while import of luxury cars and wines from the EU will become less expensive.
The deal, concluded after negotiations spanning about two decades, will create a market of about 2 billion people across the world's fourth-largest economy, India, and the second-largest economic bloc, the EU.
The prime minister said the focus of his government has always been human-centric and for all-round development of the country.
He said while India will compete with technology, absorb it, and accept its strengths, the government will never compromise on human-centric systems.
Referring to President Droupadi Murmu's address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday, he said it was an expression of confidence of 140 crore citizens and outlined aspirations of the youth.
He also noted that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is going to table her ninth consecutive budget on Sunday and that she is the only woman finance minister in the country to achieve such a significant feat.
"This is a very glorious chapter of Indian democracy," the prime minister said.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Pawar and four others were killed in the plane crash.
The incident occurred when the deputy chief minister was travelling to Baramati from Mumbai to address public meetings as part of the NCP's campaign for the February 5 zilla parishad elections in the state.
There were five people on board when the aircraft crashed at 8.50 am, a police official said.

Lashing out at the Prime Minister, Stalin said Modi chose to visit the state only at the time of elections.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was confident that India and the United States would conclude a favourable Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a respected leader and a personal friend.
Trump made the remarks in an interaction with Moneycontrol after his address at the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, where he was asked about the progress of the India-US trade negotiations.
&ldquo;I have great respect for your Prime Minister. He&rsquo;s a fantastic man and a friend of mine, and we are going to have a good deal,&rdquo; Trump said.
His comments come amid ongoing negotiations between the two countries on the proposed BTA, which aims to significantly expand bilateral trade. Earlier, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said that the first tranche of the agreement was &ldquo;very near&rdquo;, though he did not indicate a specific timeline for its conclusion.
The Bilateral Trade Agreement was formally proposed in February following directions from the leadership of both countries and seeks to more than double India-US trade from the current USD 191 billion to USD 500 billion by 2030.
Negotiations were first announced during Prime Minister Modi&rsquo;s visit to Washington in February 2025, after which multiple rounds of talks have been held between officials from both sides.
On January 9, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated the commitment of both countries to finalising the agreement. &ldquo;India and the United States were committed to negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with the US as far back as 13th of February last year. That is, since then, two sides have held multiple rounds of negotiations to arrive at a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement,&rdquo; the MEA said.
&ldquo;On several occasions, we have been close to a deal,&rdquo; the MEA spokesperson added.

Addressing a gathering at the party headquarters here, Modi described 45-year-old Nabin as a "millennial" with youthful energy and vast experience in the organisation, which will prove to be of immense help for the party.
In his 40-minute speech, the prime minister repeatedly referred to Nabin as 'mananiya' (honourable) and listed out the achievements of his government over the last 11 years, which he described as giving an account of his work to the party president.
"Every word of his will give us a new direction. His guidance will be a priceless asset that will chart our future course of action," the prime minister said, addressing the gathering attended by senior leaders like Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Amit Shah, J P Nadda, along with Union ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states, and scores of party workers.
"I, too, as a party worker, was giving an account of my work to the new president. I have given an account of my work. He will now write my CR. I am awaiting his guidance," Modi said, referring to the work of the BJP-led NDA government.
Nabin was declared the BJP national president at the party headquarters at the conclusion of the Sanghatan Parv, which saw elections to various party posts from the booth level to the national level.

"Now, honourable Nitin Nabin ji is the president of all of us, and his responsibility is not just to manage the BJP, but also to ensure coordination among all NDA allies," the prime minister said.
Modi said the new BJP chief belongs to an era in which people heard the news on the radio in childhood and are now well-versed in using Artificial Intelligence.
"Nitin ji has both youthful energy and a great deal of experience," he said.
The prime minister said infiltrators pose a very serious threat to country's security and stressed that identifying them and sending them back is extremely necessary.
Targeting the Congress, the prime minister urged BJP workers to learn from the mistakes committed by the grand old party and not to repeat them.
He said in 1984, the Congress had won more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections with more than 50 per cent of the votes.
"But today, the Congress is yearning to cross the 100-seat mark," the prime minister said.
He asked BJP workers to identify the bad qualities of the Congress that have brought them to the brink of self-destruction.
"We have to save ourselves from these bad qualities. We have to ensure that we do not embrace these bad qualities. Wherever we have maintained distance from such qualities, we have emerged invincible," Modi said.
The prime minister said the Congress never reviewed its catastrophic decline, fearing it would raise questions about the very family that has captured the party.
"That is why they keep finding excuses. They have even lost the courage to find the real reason for the decline," Modi said.
Modi said the BJP conducts a dispassionate review of its performance even after winning elections and tries to improve in regions where it faces a loss.
He cited the recent victory of the BJP in the civic bodies polls in Maharashtra and asserted that the party was not resting on its laurels, but has started work on the next round of elections.
"The BJP is a tradition. The BJP is a family. We value relationships more than membership. The BJP is such a tradition that functions not by a post but by process. Here, holding a post is an arrangement, and carrying out the work is a lifelong responsibility," Modi said.
"In the BJP, presidents change, but ideals do not change. Leadership changes, but the direction does not change," he said.
The prime minister said under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal Krishna Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi, the BJP saw a journey from zero to the summit.
"In this century, leaders like M Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari, along with many of our senior colleagues, expanded the organisation. Under the leadership of Rajnath ji, for the first time, the BJP achieved a full majority on its own," Modi said.
"Then, under the leadership of Amit Shah, the BJP formed governments in many states and came to power at the Centre for a second consecutive term. Under the leadership of J P Nadda, the BJP grew stronger from the panchayat to Parliament," Modi said.
The prime minister said the BJP began its political journey as "a party with a difference" and over the years has emerged as a party of good governance.
"The country has seen various models of governance after independence, the Congress' model of dynastic politics, the Left's model, the model of regional parties, and the era of unstable governments.
"But today, the country is witnessing the BJP's development model, one marked by stability, good governance, and sensitivity," the prime minister said.

Nabin became the 12th president of the BJP, which was founded in 1980, the same year he was born.

"This election shows that in the BJP, leadership rises from hard work and dedication, not from dynastic privilege," Laxman said, announcing the outcome of the elections.

India and the United Arab Emirates on Monday set a target of USD 200 billion in annual trade by 2032 and agreed to seal a strategic defence pact while boosting cooperation in energy, space and civil nuclear sectors with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan laying out a broad agenda to shore up ties.
Modi welcomed Al Nahyan at the Delhi airport with a hug and then they travelled together in the same vehicle to the prime minister's residence, where they held talks in the restricted as well as delegation-level formats.
"This has been a short, but extremely substantive visit," Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said at a media briefing after the UAE leader concluded his nearly three-and-a-half-hour visit that came amid increasing tensions in the Middle East and trade disruptions caused by Washington's policy on tariffs.
The two sides decided to explore a partnership in advanced nuclear technologies, including development of large nuclear reactors and small modular reactors, as well as cooperation in advanced reactor systems and nuclear power plant operations, he said.
A long-term agreement for the supply of 0.5 million metric tonnes of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) annually was concluded by the two sides.
The UAE is India's second-largest supplier of LNG to India after Qatar.
Artificial Intelligence was identified as a priority area of cooperation and it was decided to collaborate on setting up a supercomputing cluster in India with the UAE partnership, Misri said, adding the Gulf nation will also look at investments for expanding data centre capacities in India.
The foreign secretary said the two sides also set a target of USD 200 billion in annual trade by 2032. The volume of two-way trade between the two sides was USD 84 billion in 2023-24.
The two sides also resolved to significantly expand their defence ties.
"A letter of intent was signed between the two sides to work towards concluding a framework agreement for a strategic defence partnership between India and the UAE," Misri said.
Another letter of intent was also signed for joint work in developing space infrastructure. Under this initiative, both sides will look to set up new launch complexes, satellite fabrication facilities, joint missions, space academy and training centres, the foreign secretary said.
A separate document was signed to facilitate the UAE's participation in the development of a special investment region in Gujarat's Dholera.
This initiative will look at the establishment of an international airport, a pilot training school, an MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facility, a greenfield port, a smart urban township, as well as projects related to railway connectivity and energy infrastructure, Misri added.
The discussions between Modi and Al Nahyan focused on cooperation in several new and emerging areas, including new opportunities for civil nuclear cooperation in the light of the passage of the Shanti Act in India.
An agreement on food safety was also signed. It will provide for cooperation in the food sector and encourage food products and other agricultural exports from India to the UAE.
It will benefit the farmers of India and contribute to food security in the UAE, the foreign secretary said.
Both sides will also explore the possibility of setting up a "data embassy", Misri said.
This is a relatively new concept, but there will be work done to see how these can be set up under mutually recognised sovereignty agreements, he noted.
The foreign secretary said the situation in Yemen, Gaza and Iran was discussed at the talks but declined to elaborate.
"All of these issues were discussed between the leaders. I cannot get into the details at this stage, but yes, both leaders had the opportunity to share their views and opinions in detail on these issues," he said.
Misri said Modi and Al Nahyan unequivocally condemned cross-border terrorism and held that the perpetrators, supporters and financiers of all acts of terrorism must be brought to justice.
The UAE president expressed his support for the success of India's chairmanship of the BRICS grouping this year.
There has been a significant upswing in bilateral trade and people-to-people ties after New Delhi and Abu Dhabi inked an ambitious comprehensive economic partnership agreement in 2022.
The UAE president was seen off at the airport by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be part of the "Board of Peace" that will work towards bringing lasting peace to Gaza and embark on a "bold new approach" to resolve "global conflict".
Trump sent a letter to Modi that was shared on social media by the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor.
The president said it was his great honour to invite the prime minister to join him in a "critically historic and magnificent effort to solidify peace" in the Middle East and, at the same time, to embark on a "bold new approach to resolving Global Conflict".
The US president unveiled the board as part of the second phase of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
In October, Israel and militant group Hamas agreed to Trump's peace plan. Trump has sent similar letters to several global leaders.
Trump's "Board of Peace" is being projected by Washington as a new international body to usher in peace and stability in Gaza and beyond, triggering speculations that it may respond to other global conflicts as well.
Originally, the new body was to be tasked to oversee governance and coordinate funding for Gaza's redevelopment as the strip was devastated during the two years of Israeli military offensive.
In a post on X, Gor said he was honoured to convey Trump's invitation to Modi to participate in the Board of Peace, which will "bring lasting peace to Gaza".
"The Board will support effective governance to achieve stability and prosperity," the envoy said.
In his letter to Modi, Trump mentioned his September 29 announcement about a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict, as well as his 20-point roadmap to bring peace to the Middle East.
The US president noted that the United Nations Security Council overwhelmingly adopted Resolution 2803, welcoming and endorsing "this vision".
"Now it is time to turn all of these Dreams into reality. At the heart of the Plan is The Board of Peace, the most impressive and consequential Board ever assembled, which will be established as a new International Organization and Transitional Governing Administration," Trump wrote.
The US president said the effort will be to bring together a "distinguished group of nations" ready to shoulder the "noble responsibility" of building lasting peace -- "an honor reserved for those prepared to lead by example, and brilliantly invest in a secure and prosperous future for generations to come."
"We will convene our wonderful and committed partners, most of whom are Highly Respected World Leaders, in the near future," Trump said.
The Financial Times, quoting from the "charter" of the board, said it is "an international organisation that seeks to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict."
"Durable peace requires pragmatic judgment, common sense solutions, and the courage to depart from approaches and institutions that have too often failed."
The top level of the board will consist "exclusively" of heads of state under Trump's leadership, the newspaper quoted a White House official as saying.
The Trump administration has already announced that the Board of Peace will play an essential role in fulfilling Trump's 20-point plan of providing strategic oversight, mobilising international resources, and ensuring accountability as "Gaza transitions from conflict to peace and development".
The 20-point plan includes making Gaza a deradicalised terror-free zone that does not pose a threat to its neighbours, and that is redeveloped for the benefit of the people of the strip.
The White House last week announced forming a founding executive board to operationalise the Board of Peace's vision.
The members of the executive committee included US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former British prime minister Tony Blair, US special envoy to the Middle-East Steve Witkoff, businessman and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and World Bank president Ajay Banga.
The other two members of the committee are Marc Rowan, the CEO of New York-headquartered private equity firm Apollo Global Management, and Robert Gabriel, a US national security adviser.
The executive board will oversee another administrative group called the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG).

PM Modi says India has turned its diversity into a democratic strength, highlighting stability, scale and speed of development at the Commonwealth Speakers&rsquo; conference.

India has turned diversity into the strength of its democracy and shown the world that democratic institutions and processes give stability, speed and scale to its development.&nbsp;
Inaugurating the 28th conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth, Modi also said that Indian democracy is like a large tree supported by deep roots.&nbsp;
"When India gained Independence, many doubted whether democracy could survive amidst the country's immense diversity. However, this very diversity became the strength of Indian democracy," he said.
"There was also scepticism that even if democracy did take root, India would struggle to progress. Contrary to these doubts, India has demonstrated that democratic institutions and processes provide stability, scale, and speed to its development," he said.&nbsp;
The prime minister said India has a long tradition of debate, dialogue and collective decision-making.&nbsp;
"In India, democracy means last mile delivery," he said. He also said that India is strongly raising the concerns of the Global South on every global platform. "During its G20 Presidency as well, India placed the priorities of the Global South at the centre of the global agenda," he said.&nbsp;
About 60 speakers and presiding officers are attending the event being held at the Samvidhan Sadan in Parliament House complex in New Delhi from January 14 to 16. It is deliberating on a wide range of contemporary parliamentary issues, including the role of speakers and presiding officers, in maintaining strong democratic institutions.&nbsp;
The use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary functioning, the impact of social media on Members of Parliament, innovative strategies to enhance public understanding of Parliament and citizen participation beyond voting, among others, are also being discussed at the conference.&nbsp;

On the occasion of Army Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hailed the Indian Army, saying that they stand as a symbol of selfless service, safeguarding the nation with steadfast resolve at times under the most challenging conditions.
The prime minister also said that the nation salutes their courage and resolute commitment.&nbsp;
"Our soldiers stand as a symbol of selfless service, safeguarding the nation with steadfast resolve, at times under the most challenging conditions. Their sense of duty inspires confidence and gratitude across the country," he said in a post on X.

Army Day is observed on January 15 to mark Field Marshal K M Cariappa taking over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, replacing his British predecessor General Sir FRR Bucher in 1949.&nbsp;
