Notably, China is the second largest spender on defence next to the US whose defence budget for 2023 totalled $816 billion.

China on Sunday hiked its defence budget by 7.2 per cent, marginally higher than last year, to 1.55 trillion yuan (about USD 224 billion), marking the eighth consecutive year of increase in its military spending.
China last year pegged its defence budget at 1.45 trillion yuan, a 7.1 per cent increase. This year the defence spending is increased to 1.55 trillion yuan.
However, in view of the appreciation of the dollar against the yuan, this year&rsquo;s defence spending of China totalled about USD 224 billion compared to last year&rsquo;s USD 230 billion.
This is the eighth consecutive year that China has announced a single-digit percentage point increase in its military budget.
In his work report presented to the opening session of the National People&rsquo;s Congress (NPC) - the country's rubber-stamp parliament - outgoing Premier Li Keqiang called for the armed forces to boost combat preparedness.

China's armed forces, with a focus on the goals for the centenary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 2027, should work to carry out military operations, boost combat preparedness and enhance military capabilities so as to accomplish the tasks entrusted to them by the CPC (Chinese Communist Party ) and the people, Li said.
The armed forces should intensify military training and preparedness across the board, develop new military strategic guidance, devote greater energy to training under combat conditions, and make well-coordinated efforts to strengthen military work in all directions and domains, Li said.
China is the second biggest spender on defence next to the US whose defence budget for 2023 totalled USD 816 billion.
From India&rsquo;s point of view, however, China&rsquo;s defence budget continued to be over three times higher. India's defence budget for 2023-24 amounted to Rs 5.94 lakh crore (about USD 72.6 billion).
Aided by increasing defence budgets, the two-million-strong PLA, the world&rsquo;s largest military, is increasingly getting powerful and assertive with the ever-expanding military modernisation of its Army, Navy and Air Force.
The Chinese military is headed by President Xi Jinping, who is the Chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission, the overall high command of the PLA.

The clash near Yangtse along the LAC in the sensitive sector took place last Friday amid the over 30-month border standoff between the two sides in eastern Ladakh.&nbsp;
"On December 9, PLA troops contacted the LAC in Tawang Sector which was contested by own (Indian) troops in a firm and resolute manner. This face-off led to minor injuries to few personnel from both sides," the Indian Army said in a statement.
"Both sides immediately disengaged from the area. As a follow up of the incident, own (Indian) commander in the area held a flag meeting with his counterpart to discuss the issue in accordance with structured mechanisms to restore peace and tranquillity," it said.

He first visited the Xinhua Gate, the main entrance to Zhongnanhai compound which houses the residences and offices of top leaders including Xi Jinping. Amid claims of Xi's house arrest, military personnel were conspicuous by their absence.
Next Fahrion showed the situation at an important public spot - the Tiananmen Square. It is a large public square in the middle of Beijing and houses government museums, mausoleums, and meeting halls. Here too, there were many civilians, but no military.
Next was the headquarters of State Grid, which manages electricity supply in Beijing. Normal thoroughfare was seen outside the building. Occupying the second ring road near the offices of the Chinese foreign ministry was civilian traffic, and no military convoys. At Beijing's central railway station, the journalist found only civilian passengers milling about.
As the coup rumours gained prominence, experts on Chinese affairs were quick to shoot them down.
They reasoned that Xi Jinping's absence was probably due to quarantine after foreign travel. Also, the cancellation of flights has been common amid strict Covid restrictions in the country. Experts also said that a military coup in China is unlikely as the PLA remains under the firm control of politicians. Another reason that experts called the coup rumours unfounded was Xi Jinping's continuous crackdown on his opponents and dissidents, especially as he is close to securing an unprecedented third term in office.

The Indian Navy is set to participate in the 26-nation RIMPAC, or Rim of the Pacific maritime drill which is slated to be held from June 29 to August 4. The venue is the Indo-Pacific, currently a battleground between China and the West. India will reportedly send a stealth frigate and a P8I anti-submarine warfare reconnaissance aircraft for the exercise.
The maritime exercises will be held weeks after China's naval drills in the western Pacific, seen as targeted at Taiwan and Japan. China's first aircraft carrier Liaoning headlined the 3-week exercise, which also included fighter aircraft, Z-18F anti-submarine choppers, and Z-18J early-warning helicopters, as per reports.
The RIMPAC exercise might also coincide with the launching of China's third aircraft carrier - a major development given Beijing's aim to establish security relations with Pacific island nations. China's third aircraft carrier is set to be its most advanced yet.

The warship is China's second indigenous aircraft carrier and is unofficially called Type 003. Its launch was expected on the Dragon Boat Festival which was celebrated on June 3, 2022. The Type 003 aircraft carrier has been under development since 2017 at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai.
However, the launch was delayed possibly due to technical issues, as per reports. The problems are with the next phase of the ship's construction, as per a South China Morning Post report quoting sources. The report also said that no weapons and radar systems have been installed yet.
If news reports are to be believed, then the newest Chinese aircraft carrier features technology which would include it in a club currently occupied by only 3 other ships belonging to 2 nations.

The Type 003 has a catapult launch system, which allows greater take-off rate and velocity. Only two US and a French warship have had the catapult system so far. The propulsion system would create power for an electromagnetically powered catapult.
The catapult system would help the warship support additional aircraft, and more rapid flight operations, thus extending the reach and effectiveness of China's carrier-based strike aircraft, as per the US defence department.
However, experts agree that China's third aircraft carrier would take many years to become fully operational. In the meantime, India would have already launched its indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

Multiple news reports quoting unnamed intelligence sources suggest that a ground assessment by the security establishment has pointed out that the Chinese army is building a second bridge on the Pangong Lake in eastern Ladakh.
