The top court observed that the allegations of Pegasus spyware being used to target opposition leaders, journalists and others are "serious if newspaper reports are correct".
The court asked all petitioners to serve a copy of their petitions to the government. The court said it will take up the petitions again on August 10 and added that the centre has to present at the hearing. 
"Truth has to come out. We don't know whose names are there," it said.
At least 9 petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking probe into the Pegasus snooping allegations. These include petitions by senior journalists and Editors Guild of India.
The government has rejected opposition's demand for probe and has denied any involvement in snooping.

The Israeli government on Wednesday raided the offices of surveillance software firm NSO amid growing international pressure following the Pegasus snooping reveal.
NSO called the visit by the Israeli Ministry of Defence &lsquo;inspection&rsquo;, adding that the company was working in full transparency with the Israeli authorities. A company spokesperson said that the inspection will proves the facts against what they called &lsquo;false allegations by the media&rsquo;.
Israeli news outlet Calcalist reporting sources called the raids more of a formal meeting that a thorough audit.
An international collaborative investigative project revealed that the NSO group&rsquo;s software Pegasus was used unlawfully to snoop on government authorities, journalists, activist and other human rights workers.
Countries across the globe have reacted differently to the spying reveal. While France has ordered an investigation, Mexico confirmed that the previous government&rsquo;s bought the spyware.

Amid loud sloganeering, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the second time on Thursday as Opposition MPs led protests against the newly implemented farms laws and the alleged snooping by the Centre using the Pegasus spyware.
Congress MPs have submitted a notice for an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha over the Pegasus snooping row.&nbsp;Rahul Gandhi meanwhile joined Congress MPs at the Gandhi statue outside the Parliament during their protest over the newly implemented farm laws. 
Shiromani Akali Dal MPs were also on protest over the farm laws and were seen with placards to Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar at the Parliament premises.
Later in the day, Congress minister KC Venugopal&nbsp;is expected to move a privilege motion in parliament accusing the govt of misleading people by giving false information about the Covid-19 deaths due to the oxygen crisis.
