Filmmaker Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" has bagged a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards.

Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' Earns Critics Choice Nod

Just recently, the movie was named the Best International Film by New York Film Critics Circle and won an award in the same category at the Gotham Awards.

Filmmaker Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" has bagged a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards.
The nominations for the awards ceremony, to be held on January 12, 2025, were announced on Thursday evening by the Critics Choice Association (CCA).
In the best foreign language film category, "All We Imagine As Light" is pitted against France's "Emilia P&eacute;rez", Latvia's "Flow", Ireland's "Kneecap", Brazil's "I'm Still Here" and Germany's "The Seed of the Sacred Fig", which is directed by dissident Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof.
The nod at the Critics Choice Awards for "All We Imagine As Light" comes days after the film picked up two nominations at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.
The Malayalam-Hindi film, which marks Kapadia's feature directorial debut, is nominated for Best Motion Picture Non-English Language and the Best Direction - Motion Picture at the upcoming awards.
The film, an official India-French co-production, charted history by becoming the first Indian title from India to win the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
It follows two nurses Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and Anu (Divya Prabha) from Kerala navigating life and love in Mumbai along with their friend and cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam).
Just recently, the movie was named the Best International Film by New York Film Critics Circle and won an award in the same category at the Gotham Awards.
"All We Imagine As Light" claimed the top spot at the Sight and Sound magazine's annual list of 50 best movies of the year.
The film is being distributed in the US by Janus Films and Sideshow. Rana Daggubati&rsquo;s Spirit Media released the film across India in November.
The 30th Critics Choice Awards will be hosted by Chelsea Handler. The awards gala will livestream on Lionsgate Play in India.

Despite Pushpa 2 enjoying multiple daily screenings, Motwane voiced his disappointment on Instagram Stories, emphasizing that Kapadia's Golden Globe-nominated film struggles to find a place on the big screen.
Motwane congratulated Kapadia on her two Golden Globe nominations for All We Imagine As Light, including Best Director, but criticized the industry's lack of support for her film.

While the team behind Pushpa 2 has yet to respond to Motwane&rsquo;s comments, the situation highlights the ongoing debate about the prioritization of commercial blockbusters over independent films.

Released on December 5, the film has already crossed ₹590 crores at the box office, with expectations to surpass ₹600 crores by Tuesday. The film sets the stage for Pushpa 3: The Rampage.

India's Payal Kapadia scripted history at the recently concluded Cannes as her film 'All We Imagine as Light' won the Grand Prix honour at the prestigious Film Festival. Among many those who celebrated her success was her alma mater, The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). However, FTII, Pune had filed a case against Payal and a few other students for protesting against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the institute's chairman. Ali Fazal has now called out the hypocrisy of the institute.&nbsp;

On Sunday, the official X handle of FTII celebrated its alumni members' remarkable feat at the 77th edition of Cannes. The post, including a couple of pictures of Payal and Chidanand Naik (who won the La Cinef Award for Best Short for her film Sunflowers Were The First Ones To Know), was captioned, "It is a moment of pride for FTII as its Alumni create history at Cannes. As we witness a phenomenal year for Indian Cinema at 77th Cannes Film Festival, FTII cherishes the glorious achievements of its Alumni at this Mega International Stage of Cinema.&rdquo;

Ali Fazal reposted FTII's message with the caption, &ldquo;Uhhh&hellip; please don&rsquo;t. Just dont.&rdquo; For the unversed, disciplinary action was taken against Payal in 2015, for leading a student protest against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as the FTII president. &nbsp;Payal spearheaded a protest and questioned the Mahabharat actor&rsquo;s qualifications for the position.&nbsp;

Kapadia noted that her film was the first one in 30 years to compete for the top prize at Cannes. “Thank you to the Cannes Film Festival for having our film here. Please don’t wait 30 years to have another Indian film,” she added.

It was also the first Indian film that was shortlisted in competition at the prestigious film festival in the last 30 years. While the entire country is brimming with joy at the proud moment, the woman at the centre of the highly acclaimed film stood tall and delivered an emotional speech.&nbsp;

Kapadia took to the stage with the three leading ladies of her film-Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam. The filmmaker said that it was a dream in itself to be selected in competition section of the prestigious film festival and winning the award was &lsquo;beyond her imagination.&rsquo; &nbsp;Kapadia thanked the talented stars of her film and said, &ldquo;without them I don&rsquo;t think this film would have been possible. It&rsquo;s three women who have given me so much and contributed to the film like a family and made it their own.&rdquo; The filmmaker went on to hug the emotional actors on stage.&nbsp;

Talking about her film, she said, &ldquo;This film is about friendship, about three very different women. Oftentimes, women are pitted against each other. The award winning filmmaker is an alumna of the Film &amp; Television Institute of India (FTII). Before &lsquo;All We Imagine As Light&rsquo;, her documentary &lsquo;A Night of Knowing Nothing&rsquo; had premiered at Director&rsquo;s Fortnight in 2021. It won the Oeil d&rsquo;or (Golden Eye) award. &nbsp;
