Spending too much time in front of the television or with mobile phone screens can be detrimental to the development of children under five, finds a study&nbsp;by researchers from Chennai.

Assessing the performance of kids under five, researchers found that children who indulged in excessive screen&nbsp;times of several hours were less able in comprehending what they were being told, compared to children with lower screen exposure.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Published in PLOS One, the study found that out of the 718 children studied, around 70 per cent&nbsp;had been exposed to excessive screen time.&nbsp;What&rsquo;s more, a majority of the children had been exposed to&nbsp;TV&nbsp;screens even before they turned one.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Explaining the developmental delay, researchers said generally children learn from their&nbsp;caregivers and are able to&nbsp;speak a lot of words by the age of three. But those exposed to excessive screen times are unable to do so.&nbsp;&nbsp;
When a parent&nbsp;says &lsquo;Come here and sit down,&rsquo; they are issuing two commands. But the child manages to understand just one, representing a developmental issue.&nbsp;Children exposed to screen times&nbsp;also&nbsp;imitate the slang or inappropriate words&nbsp;they pick up on television.&nbsp;

While it is now impossible to avoid screens altogether, the team urges care providers to exercise supervision during the child&rsquo;s screen exposure&nbsp;and limit it as much as possible.

For children, understanding that they might never see the people they are with is not easy. However, it is important that they understand the point of no return that comes with death. Tell them the truth, answer whatever questions they might have, and ensure that they are very clear about the passing of a loved one.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Do not engage in euphemisms&nbsp;
Instead of telling them directly, engaging in death euphemisms might confuse the child. As a replacement for saying, &ldquo;your loved one has gone to a special place&rdquo;, empathetically say, &ldquo;we have sad news but your loved one has died&rdquo;. Answer questions they might have.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A longitudinal study of 200 participants that started way back in 1998 has found that a youngster&rsquo;s relationship with their friends is a better predictor of their&nbsp;future outcomes than the relationship they share with their parents.

For the study published in&nbsp;the journal Child Development, scientists surveyed participants on their&nbsp;social relationships, the quality of their romantic relationships, depressive symptoms and work performance.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Comparing this data against answers from the same person&rsquo;s childhood, it was clear that&nbsp;good teen friendships lead to success later in life.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Predictably, the reverse was also true. People&nbsp;who&nbsp;did not have good, quality, best-friend relationships as teens had poorer work performance as 25-27-year-olds.
They were also predisposed to have&nbsp;worse-quality romantic relationships and were more likely to be depressed.
All in all, the findings should prompt parents to stop labelling children&rsquo;s focus on their friendships as trivial or silly, says the team.&nbsp;
