Ex-PCB chairman Najam Sethi has indirectly blamed former Prime Minister Imran Khan for triggering the downslide of Pakistan cricket. In a post on X, Sethi whose last PCB stint was from December 2022 to June 2023, said the nation is justifiably angry at the performance of the national team. Champions Trophy hosts Pakistan are out of the tournament after back to back defeats.
&ldquo;The cricket fraternity says Pakistan has hit rock bottom. How come a cricket team that was once no 1 in T20s (2018) and Tests (2016) and ODIs (1990 and 1996), which won the WC in 1992 and CT in 2017, is today equated with Zimbabwe?&rdquo; According to Sethi, the downfall started in 2019 when a new management under a new PM/Patron (Imran Khan was prime minister at that time and had brought in Ehsan Mani as PCB chairman) changed the domestic cricket structure that had served Pakistan reasonably well for decades and replaced it with an ill-suited Australian hybrid model.
&ldquo;Political interference continued; contradictory PCB policies became the norm&mdash; foreign coaches were hired and sent packing, selectors were whimsically nominated, old discards were recruited to mentor and manage.
"Finally, player power, clash of captain egos and groupings in the team came to prevail over fumbling management! The horrible result is before us,&rdquo; Sethi wrote.
He said Pakistan can certainly restore its cricket fortunes if everyone recognises the nature of the problems and marshals the integrity, experience, knowledge and professionalism required to do the job.
Soon after Imran became PM, Sethi resigned from the PCB.
This paved the way for the appointment of Ehsan Mani, a former ICC president.
In 2019, the PCB on the directions of Imran revamped the domestic cricket structure ending the old system of 16-18 departmental and regional association sides competing in domestic cricket events and a six team first class structure was introduced.
Imran later also appointed Ramiz Raja as chairman in 2021 when Mani excused himself from accepting an extension of his contract. Ramiz was replaced in December 2022 after the fall of the Imran Khan government by Sethi.

It may be recalled that Gary Kirsten, who joined as the white ball side&rsquo;s coach along with Gillespie, had resigned before Pakistan left for the series in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Kirsten had resigned citing differences with the PCB on the matters of authority.
Both Gillespie and Kirsten were appointed on a two-year contract before the T20 World Cup 2024 and the PCB had promised a new era for the Pakistan team.
But once Aaqib was brought in as senior selector and PCB granted him full powers including in team selection, the foreign coaches started falling out with the board.

Pakistan will announce new set of coaches for red and white ball formats for the national team by the end of this month, a Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Friday.
The PCB also confirmed that besides South Africa's Gary Kirsten and Australia's Jason Gillispie, the board had received applications from a couple of reputed coaches by the April 15 deadline. The PCB official said that while they are interested in Kirsten and Gillispie, the new applicants are also in the fray. "The PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that the long-term appointments of coaches will be done through a due process and all commitments would be met by the board," the source added.
The last time PCB followed due process in appointing coaches was in 2019 when it named Misbah-ul-Haq as the head coach and chief selector of the national side. Since then, all appointments have either been made on a consultancy or interim basis.
Another reliable source in the PCB said that this time, the board would only invite those candidates for interviews who apply for the coaching positions.
"Even in Kirsten and Gillispie's case though, the board has held direct negotiations with them, and they remain top candidates to be appointed head coaches, (but) they were also told to apply through due process by the deadline," the source said.
He admitted that with some interesting candidates have also applied for the head coach's position, the PCB will require time till the end of the month to reach a decision and make an announcement.
"The PCB chief doesn't want names disclosed at any stage, and names would only be revealed once announcements are made," stated the source.
The PCB has also kept April 20 as the deadline for candidates interested in applying for assistant coaches' positions.
"Even Azhar Mahmood has to go through the process, and currently, he was named head coach for the New Zealand series on a consultancy basis," the source added.&nbsp;

While Gillespie has been picked to be head coach for the red-ball format, Kirsten will be head coach for the white-ball formats.

Wasim took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his decision, having played 121 international matches across ODIs and T20Is for Pakistan.
Imad's final outing for his country was in April this year in a T20I against New Zealand at Rawalpindi. The Welsh-born Wasim made his international debut with the Men in Green in May 2015 in a T20I against Zimbabwe at Lahore.
"In recent days, I have been doing a lot of thinking about my international career, and I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for me to announce my retirement from international cricket," the 34-year-old Wasim wrote in his retirement note.
"I would like to thank the PCB for all their support over the years - it has truly been an honour to represent Pakistan. Each of my 121 appearances across the ODI and T20I formats was a dream come true." Wasim, a left-handed batter, played 55 ODIs scoring 986 runs averaging 42.86 and he plucked 44 wickets with his left-arm spin.
From 66 T20Is, Wasim made 486 runs and took 65 wickets.

Pakistan's improbable hopes of a semi-final qualification were dashed the moment England batted first and scored 337 for nine in 50 overs.
Pakistan, in response, managed only 244 runs in 43.3 overs as their batters were neither able to pick Adil Rashid's (2/55 in 10 overs) googlies nor retiring David Willey's (3/56 in 10 overs) incisive swinging deliveries.
There was no chance in hell of Pakistan making the cut because even if their batters had hit 40 consecutive sixes in 6.4 overs, they wouldn't have surpassed England's total and topple New Zealand on net run rate.

Meanwhile, Rauf also became the first Asian bowler to earn the ignominy of giving away 500 runs in the tournament.
The 32-year-old Stokes, who came out of ODI retirement to take part in England's title defence, smashed two sixes and 11 fours while playing full-blooded reverse sweeps and mighty pulls.
Since his return, he has made his impact felt with three back-to-back 50-plus scores which also included a century, as he signed off the World Cup with 304 runs at 50.66.
Premier batter Root has been the weak link so far in the World Cup, but Stokes' fury also rubbed on him as he ended up with a fifty-plus knock.
The duo consolidated after a quick start in a 132-run partnership that came off just 131 balls.
Bairstow's brisk 59 off 61 balls (7x4, 1x6) provided a perfect start for England in an 82-run opening stand with Dawid Malan (31; 39b

At the moment, Pakistan's World Cup campaign is stuck against a huge boulder primarily because of their bowlers' inability to fire as a unit, the latest setback being a 62-run defeat against Australia here.
It was their second successive defeat in the tournament after a seven-wicket battering by India.
Shaheen Shah Afridi looked to have regained his touch with a five-wicket haul, but Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali were taken apart by David Warner and Mitchell Marsh.
Alarmingly, the Pakistan bowlers did not look to have a Plan B when riding on a rough sea, and their bowling coach Morne Morkel admitted to his side not building a bowling partnership.
"The last couple of games, that is one of our talking points, to string partnerships together. I think in India that is the key, create pressure from both ends, and keep the stumps in play, and at the moment, we're not doing that.
"We are not consistent with the ball. If you are going to lift that trophy on the 19th then we need to create consistency from both ends," said Morkel after the match.
The former South African pacer said the team missed the presence of injured pacer Naseem Shah and his new ball alliance with Afridi in this tournament.
"Naseem is a quality bowler if you look at his stats, the consistency he gave us with the new ball upfront was amazing. The partnership he formed with Shaheen was&hellip; this we always talked about bowling partnerships. Naseem is a big loss," he said.
However, Morkel said Rauf and Ali were trying to learn and adjust to the demands of bowling in powerplays in ODIs, a role the pacers are not accustomed to.
"It's a slightly new role for Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf bowling with the new ball in powerplays. These guys used to bowl sort of outside the powerplay. But I think, with the opportunity we've given them they are standing up to the occasion.
"It is quite tough with a new ball in India. The margins are small. So, they are learning and trying their heart out," he said.
Morkel said the way forward for Rauf in ODIs was to increase his situational awareness and add new tricks to his repertoire.
"He is still one of the go-to guys, one of the X-factors. He can look at gaming awareness and maybe mix your pace a little bit more. But he's a guy who always gives 100%. I can't fault him for anything," he added.
However, Morkel saw one bright omen in the re-emergence of left-arm pacer Afridi during the match against the Aussies.
"We had honest conversations. We sort of unpacked the opening spells of the World Cup so far and looked at areas where we can look to attack and be smart. Perhaps, he was trying too hard. Tonight, he ran in and hit those hard lines, changed his game strategy, and mixed his pace up.
"He put up a performance like that on a tough bowling day against a team that is very aggressive, and it is a pleasing thing for me," said Morkel.

The Pakistan pacers once again wreaked havoc as they bundled out the team for 209 in 48.4 overs. While Shaheen Shah Afridi and Faheem Ashraf got 2 each, Shadab Khan picked 3. Mujeeb ur Rahman was the highest score for Afghanistan with an electrifying 37 ball 64 as he also raced to a new Afghan record for the fastest 50 in just 26 balls. Rashid Khan who made a 27-ball 50 last year against Ireland was the previous holder of the record.

The Pakistan government gave clearance to the country's senior men's team to travel to India for the 2023 World Cup, ending months of uncertainty over their participation in the showpiece.

A press release from the foreign ministry informed that Pakistan has consistently maintained that sports should not be mixed with politics. It has, therefore, decided to send its team to India to compete in the upcoming World Cup.

The Pakistan government on Sunday gave clearance to the country's senior men's team to travel to India for the 2023 World Cup, ending months of uncertainty over their participation in the showpiece.
A press release from the foreign ministry informed that Pakistan has consistently maintained that sports should not be mixed with politics. It has, therefore, decided to send its team to India to compete in the upcoming World Cup.
"Pakistan believes that the state of bilateral relations with India should not stand in the way of fulfilling its international sports-related obligations," the release said.
The ministry said that Pakistan, however, has deep concerns about the security of its team and it would convey them to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Indian authorities.
"We expect that the full safety and security of the Pakistan cricket team will be ensured during its visit to India," the release said.
It also said that Pakistan's decision shows its "constructive and responsible approach"
