OTT platform asked to take down ‘obscene’ content by the regulatory body

In a conversation with The Indian Express, officials from ULLU said they were reviewing the order internally but won’t be able to comment any further.

<p>The self-regulatory body for online curated content has suggested strict action on a platform invoking the Information Technology Rules (2021).</p>
<p><br>The Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council (DPCGC), a registered self-regulatory body for OTT platforms, headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Justice A K Sikri, &lsquo;gravely objected&rsquo; to the content being streamed on an OTT platform called ULLU, and ordered take-down of such content in 15 days.</p>
<p><br>The order was passed after a complaint on the obscene nature of the content being streamed on ULLU was filed. The complainant stated that some of the web series only had obscenity and nudity, which is contrary to the law of the land as well as the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.</p>
<p><br>ULLU has denied all allegations. It insists that the viewership is based on discretion, and has also cited &lsquo;freedom of speech and expression&rsquo; as enshrined in the Constitution.</p>
<p><br>In a conversation with The Indian Express, officials from ULLU said they were reviewing the order internally but won&rsquo;t be able to comment any further.</p>
<p><br>The government recently remarked that OTT platforms have the responsibility of ensuring that &lsquo;they do not propagate vulgarity and abuse camouflaged as the creative expression&rsquo;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a move to fight global rivals such as Netflix and Disney in India, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's streaming platform JioCinema announced premium pricing of 999 Indian rupees ($12) a year.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The move comes weeks after a Reliance's Viacom18 struck a content deal with Warner Bros, that will make available popular HBO and Warner titles such as "Succession" and those featuring the character Harry Potter on the JioCinema platform.</p>
<p>The JioCinema website on Saturday showed the new premium pricing for Hollywood content, with the much-awaited Succession series available for streaming.</p>
<p>Several of HBO's top-rated shows, including Succession, had aired in India on the Disney Hotstar platform until March 31 as part of a deal between the two companies that ended on that date.</p>

<p>Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; is all set to release on the OTT platform Prime Video debut on March 22, 56 days after its theatrical release. The Siddharth Anand movie may also contain some deleted scenes. A scene that explains Pathaan's origin was cut from the theatrical version, among other scenes, the director admitted.</p>
<p>The film backed by Yash Raj Films has become the most successful Hindi movie of all time. As it continues to play in theaters across the world, including those in the US, Canada, UAE, Egypt, UK, Australia, and New Zealand, it celebrated its 50th day on March 15. &lsquo;Pathaan&rsquo; has already made over 540 crores at the domestic box office.</p>
<p>Fans may be treated to some supplemental content with Prime Video's OTT release of 'Pathaan'. The director had hinted about the religion and history of the main character in an interview. While talking to the media, the director of Pathaan, Siddhart stated, &lsquo;The four of us, not the three of us, have this synergy: Abbas [Tyrewala], Sridhar [Ragahavan], Adi [Chopra], and I. We share the same worldview, and we all grew up watching and believing in the same movies. We agree on that. So, the fact that he doesn't have a name, and he's found in a theatre that was called Navrang&hellip; Although it was cut, you might still see this in the OTT version. None of us dismisses it or declares it to be cheesy.&rsquo;</p>
<p>The director also disclosed that for their special cameo scene on the train, where he had asked Salman Khan to make a reference to his 1995 film 'Karan Arjun' with<a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/bollywood/alia-bhatt-celebrated-her-30th-birthday-in-london-with-friends-and-family-see-pics-1678959463664"> Shah Rukh</a>. <p>The Covid-19 pandemic was a game-changer for the &nbsp;OTT platforms, which saw viewership skyrocketing.&nbsp;<br><br>However, as the Covid situation abated, paid subscriptions for OTT platforms has plateaued.&nbsp;</p>
<p>According to reports by Livemint, besides penetration of OTTs among the urban elite has reached a saturation point and the platforms are yet to devise a strategy to woo the lower-end of the target audience in a significant way.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The churn has also increased with consumers frequently activating and deactivating subscriptions. At the peak of the covid pandemic, platforms had seen over 100% rise in subscription numbers. With most subscribers opting for annual payment plans, month-on-month growth has slowed, said Vibhu Agarwal, founder of OTT app Atrangii.<br><br>Most of the OTT players have been able to gain initial traction from India&rsquo;s largest cities, where the per capita income is much higher than that in smaller cities or rural areas. Therefore, substantially increasing the paid user base could prove to be a challenge in India.&nbsp;</p>
