India on Tuesday reported over 2.55 lakh Covid-19 cases witness a considerable dip after reporting over 3 lakh coronavirus infections for five straight days. 
2,55,874 new coronavirus cases reported in the last 24 hours ending at 8am took the Covid tally in India to almost 3.98 crore.
The daily positivity rate, which is the share of Covid-19 tests that return positive has dropped to 15.52 per cent from Monday's 20.75 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 17.17 per cent.
India also added 614 fresh fatalities, taking the Covid-related death count since the start of the pandemic to 4,90,462.
The active cases in India now comprise 5.62 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate marginally increased to 93.15 per cent. The active cases presently stand at 22,36,842.

Amid a surge in Covid-19 cases, the Centre on Wednesday released revised guidelines for home isolation of mild/asymptomatic Covid-19 cases.
According to the new guidelines, issued by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, a patient under home isolation will stand discharged after 7 days from testing positive.
Let's take a look at some of the measures laid out in the revised guidelines.
Who are asymptomatic patients?
The guidelines define the asymptomatic cases as “laboratory confirmed cases who are not experiencing any symptoms and have oxygen saturation at room air of more than 93 per cent."
Furthermore, a designated control room contact number at the district /sub district level shall be provided to the family to get suitable guidance for undertaking testing, clinical management related guidance, assignment of a hospital bed, if warranted.
New guidelines issued by the Centre
Patient under home isolation will stand discharged and end isolation after at least 7 days have passed from testing positive and no fever for 3 successive days.
The patient shall continue continue wearing masks. There is however no need for re-testing after the home isolation period is over.
Asymptomatic contacts of infected individuals need not undergo Covid test and are advised to monitor health in home quarantine.
The remaining guidelines of personal hygiene, masking, well-ventilated and separate room for isolated patients as well as the caregivers remain the same.

Days after the Allahabad High Court requested the poll panel to immediately postpone the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh for one to two months amid rising cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, the panel will meet senior officials of the ministry of health and family welfare, including secretary Rajesh Bhushan today, ANI has reported.
Last Thursday, the high court also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ECI to immediately ban rallies and public meetings of political parties in the state.
Assembly elections are due in five states including Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Goa and Punjab in February-March.
The Election Commission had earlier directed the poll-bound states to “exponentially ramp up vaccination”, especially in the “low coverage districts”.

According to the South African expert, who first brought the Omicron variant to the world’s notice, the Covid pandemic is yet to be over and will become endemic in the days to come.
She disagreed with the opinion of some experts that Covid is heading towards an end with the advent of Omicron, which as of now is comparatively a weaker variant of the coronavirus.

Discussing the character of the Omicron strain of Covid that is spreading fast across the world and has dampened year-end festivities in many parts of the country, Coetzee said it attacks “warm bodies” and is also infecting children.
"... for now Omicron is not threatening but it is fast spreading with a high infectivity rate, but less severe cases in hospitals. The virus' sole purpose is to infect a warm body and to survive. And yes, children are also being infected by it, but they are recovering in an average of five-six days," she said.
Can the Omicron variant again mutate and change its character? "Yes, it might mutate in the future to be more deadly, or it might not," she said.
The 61-year-old medical practitioner also held that human behaviour such as wearing masks as well as following safety protocols for COVID-19 will play a huge role in controlling the transmission of Omicron.
"You cannot rely on vaccines alone. Human behaviour unfortunately also plays a huge role and one also needs to be responsible and take ownership of what you do," she stated.
"Vaccines, boosters, masks, good ventilation, stay away from crowds and common sense. Also know the symptoms and when to test, when to see a doctor and get treatment," the renowned South African doctor said.

A total of 4,79,520 deaths have been reported so far in the country, including 1,41,404 from Maharashtra, 46,203 from Kerala, 38,305 from Karnataka, 36,714 from Tamil Nadu, 25,103 from Delhi, 22,915 from Uttar Pradesh and 19,707 from West Bengal.
The Health Ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.
"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

The Centre has said that an analysis of 183 of the 358 known Omicron variant Covid-19 cases in India found that 70% of the infected are asymptomatic.
The health ministry officials also noted that a little over 90% of the cases for whom vaccination status was known had taken a full course of their shots, and 61% of the cases were in men.
Sharing the results of the analysis Friday, the Centre emphasised that “vaccine alone is not sufficient to contain the pandemic” and reminded that the use of masks and surveillance is key to breaking the chain of transmission.
The analysis, released by Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan, showed 27 per cent of the cases did not have a history of foreign travel — indicating the presence of Omicron in the community.
The government has not identified any community transmission case of Omicron variant infection yet, although the government has begun efforts to send more random samples for genome sequencing, which determines the variant.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday issued orders to initiate strict measures, including a statewide night curfew from December 25, in view of a rise in Covid cases in several states.
The coronavirus night curfew will be applicable from 11 pm to 5 am, a senior official said here.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the chief minister also instructed officials to cap the number of people attending events like marriages to 200. These events have to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines, and organisers will be required to inform the local authorities about these, the official said.
Adityanath also asked the officials to ensure all traders follow the "no mask, no goods" policy at their establishments, he said.
Masks should be made mandatory for everyone on the streets or in the markets. Police should carry out continuous patrols to ensure the guidelines are followed, the official said.
Adityanath directed the officials to ensure that people arriving in Uttar Pradesh from other states or abroad are traced and tested for coronavirus, and extra vigilance is maintained on buses, railway stations and airports, he said.
He asked for a close watch to be kept on the health of those coming from outside the state after testing them, and if required, they should be admitted to hospitals or be quarantined, the senior official said.
Monitoring committees did a commendable job in coronavirus management in the past, and directives have been issued to reactivate them in villages and urban wards, he said.
The chief minister said that in view of the possibility of a third wave of Covid-19, the state made systematic preparations in the past which needed to be re-examined. Facilities available at all government and private medical institutions of the state should be examined closely, and the Covid help desk and the day care centre in industrial units should be activated, he said.
The situation in the state is under control at present. Forty-nine new cases of the infection were confirmed in the investigation of over 1.91 lakh samples tested in the last 24 hours.
In the same time period, 12 people recovered from the infection, and the total number of active cases in the state now stands at 266. There are no Covid patients in 37 districts, the official said.

India Omicron cases: India saw a record single-day jump of over 90 fresh cases of the new variant on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu recorded the highest daily count on Thursday with 33 fresh Omicron cases, followed by Maharashtra which added 23 cases and Karnataka which reported 12 infections. Delhi and Gujarat reported seven cases each while two patients tested positive for the highly infectious coronavirus variant in Odisha.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, held a review meeting on the Covid-19 situation in the country on Thursday evening.
PM Modi took stock of the pandemic situation across the country in the high-level meeting attended by senior officials and experts and asked them to be 'satark, savdhaan' over the Omicron variant.
Several states and UTs have passed orders to ban gatherings on Christmas and New Year to restrict the spread of the virus. While Delhi has banned Christmas and New Year's gatherings, Madhya Pradesh government has clamped night curfew in the state.
The Centre advised states that are slated to hold assembly polls in the next few months to ramp up vaccination exponentially to protect the vulnerable population amid the steady rise in cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus in India.

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday urged the central government to stop political rallies and postpone elections in Uttar Pradesh amid rising cases of the new Omicron variant of Covid-19.
The court said the number of patients infected with Omicron are increasing and there is a possibility of a third wave.
The court cited countries like China, Netherlands, and Germany that have imposed complete or partial lockdowns due to the rising cases.
The gram panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal Assembly polls also contributed to a rise in infections that led to many deaths due to Covid-19 during the second wave, the court pointed out.
Appreciating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Covid-19 vaccination campaign, the court requested him to consider stopping rallies, gatherings and postponing the upcoming state elections, taking strong measures in view of the pandemic situation.
As the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections are nearing, all the political parties are mobilising lakhs of people by holding rallies and meetings where it is not possible to follow Covid protocols, including social distancing.
The court warned that if this is not stopped in time, the consequences could be more dire than the second wave.
The court requested the Election Commission of India to immediately stop such rallies and gatherings and also order political parties to campaign through TV channels and newspapers.
The court said, if possible, the elections that are expected to be held in February next year could be postponed by a couple of months because only if there is life, then the election rallies and meetings can take place and the right to life has also been given under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.
