On Monday, Zhang Wenhong, a prominent infectious disease expert at a hospital affiliated with Shanghai's Fudan University noted in an essay for China's business outlet Caixin, that the numbers for the mainland were still in the beginning stages of an “exponential rise.” Shanghai confirmed 41 new cases on Monday.
Much of the current outbreak is being driven the variant commonly known as “stealth omicron," or the B.A.2 lineage of the omicron variant, Zhang noted. Early research suggests it spreads faster than the original omicron, which itself spread faster than the original virus and other variants.
“But if our country opens up quickly now, it will cause a large number of infections in people in a short period of time," Zhang wrote on Monday. "No matter how low the death rate is, it will still cause a run on medical resources and a short term shock to social life, causing irreparable harm to families and society.”

With the continuous rising cases of Covid-19 in past few days in the capital city, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai issued fresh guidelines to enhanced surveillance of international travellers arriving at Mumbai International Airport from abroad.
A rapid RT-PCR test will be mandatory for all international passengers arriving at the Mumbai airport. If anyone is found positive, a normal RT-PCR test will be done. As per the civic body's latest order, all international passengers arriving in Mumbai, irrespective of whether they departed from an at-risk country or not, "will be asked to take rapid RT PCR test".

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday issued orders to initiate strict measures, including a statewide night curfew from December 25, in view of a rise in Covid cases in several states.
The coronavirus night curfew will be applicable from 11 pm to 5 am, a senior official said here.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the chief minister also instructed officials to cap the number of people attending events like marriages to 200. These events have to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines, and organisers will be required to inform the local authorities about these, the official said.
Adityanath also asked the officials to ensure all traders follow the "no mask, no goods" policy at their establishments, he said.
Masks should be made mandatory for everyone on the streets or in the markets. Police should carry out continuous patrols to ensure the guidelines are followed, the official said.
Adityanath directed the officials to ensure that people arriving in Uttar Pradesh from other states or abroad are traced and tested for coronavirus, and extra vigilance is maintained on buses, railway stations and airports, he said.
He asked for a close watch to be kept on the health of those coming from outside the state after testing them, and if required, they should be admitted to hospitals or be quarantined, the senior official said.
Monitoring committees did a commendable job in coronavirus management in the past, and directives have been issued to reactivate them in villages and urban wards, he said.
The chief minister said that in view of the possibility of a third wave of Covid-19, the state made systematic preparations in the past which needed to be re-examined. Facilities available at all government and private medical institutions of the state should be examined closely, and the Covid help desk and the day care centre in industrial units should be activated, he said.
The situation in the state is under control at present. Forty-nine new cases of the infection were confirmed in the investigation of over 1.91 lakh samples tested in the last 24 hours.
In the same time period, 12 people recovered from the infection, and the total number of active cases in the state now stands at 266. There are no Covid patients in 37 districts, the official said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday issued orders to initiate strict measures, including a statewide night curfew from December 25, in view of a rise in Covid cases in several states.
The coronavirus night curfew will be applicable from 11 pm to 5 am, a senior official said here.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the chief minister also instructed officials to cap the number of people attending events like marriages to 200. These events have to adhere to Covid-19 guidelines, and organisers will be required to inform the local authorities about these, the official said.
Adityanath also asked the officials to ensure all traders follow the "no mask, no goods" policy at their establishments, he said.
Masks should be made mandatory for everyone on the streets or in the markets. Police should carry out continuous patrols to ensure the guidelines are followed, the official said.

Adityanath directed the officials to ensure that people arriving in Uttar Pradesh from other states or abroad are traced and tested for coronavirus, and extra vigilance is maintained on buses, railway stations and airports, he said.
He asked for a close watch to be kept on the health of those coming from outside the state after testing them, and if required, they should be admitted to hospitals or be quarantined, the senior official said.
Monitoring committees did a commendable job in coronavirus management in the past, and directives have been issued to reactivate them in villages and urban wards, he said.
The chief minister said that in view of the possibility of a third wave of Covid-19, the state made systematic preparations in the past which needed to be re-examined. Facilities available at all government and private medical institutions of the state should be examined closely, and the Covid help desk and the day care centre in industrial units should be activated, he said.
The situation in the state is under control at present. Forty-nine new cases of the infection were confirmed in the investigation of over 1.91 lakh samples tested in the last 24 hours.
In the same time period, 12 people recovered from the infection, and the total number of active cases in the state now stands at 266. There are no Covid patients in 37 districts, the official said.

In case of all new clusters of Covid positive cases, prompt notification of "containment zones", "buffer zones" should be done, strict perimeter control of containment zone according to extant guidelines must be ensured.

Amid Omicron threat, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said all new positive cases of coronavirus being reported in the city will be sent for genome sequencing. The CM also appealed to the Centre to allow booster dose for health workers and others.
The national capital has reported 24 cases of Omicron so far. Out of these 24 patients, 12 have been discharged, according to the government.
Insisting that there is no Oxygen threat this time, Kejriwal said there is no need to panic in view of the Omicron variant.
&ldquo;For the last few days Covid-19 cases are increasing in the city. Yesterday (Sunday), it was over 100. We don't know what type of Covid cases are these, normal or the Omicron variant. So to ascertain this we have now decided to send the samples of all the positive cases for genome sequencing,&rdquo; Kejriwal said in a press conference.
He also appealed to the central government to allow booster dose for health workers and other citizens to fight new COVID-19 variants like Omicron.
The chief minister also noted that experts, in a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Monday, said Omicron spreads very fast but its symptoms are mild.
&ldquo;We will strengthen home isolation system as most cases will not require hospitalisation. There is no need to panic in view of Omicron infection as we have adequate arrangements at hospitals if there is any spread,&rdquo; Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal appealed to public not to let their guards down and start wearing masks to arrest the spread of the virus.

The Dutch government says it is imposing a tough nationwide lockdown starting Sunday in an attempt to rein in sharply rising levels of infections with the omicron coronavirus mutation.
“The Netherlands is going into lockdown again from tomorrow,” caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte said Saturday.
He said the move was “unavoidable because of the fifth wave caused by the omicron variant that is bearing down on us.”
Rutte did not immediately outline the terms of the new lockdown but said it it will build on a partial lockdown already in force that requires bars, restaurants and other public gathering places such as cinemas and theaters to close at 5 pm.

The Minister said there are currently 40 people, who are suspected cases of the variant, admitted in the special facility of LNJP Hospital, of whom 38 are Covid-19 positive.
"There has been no "severe" case so far,” he added.
The minister further said many international travellers are turning out Covid positive upon arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

With the fresh Omicron cases reported in Delhi on Thursday, the nationwide tally has climbed to 77.
