The Congress on Friday said the Supreme Court has rightly called out suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma for being "single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country" with her remark against the Prophet, and that the ruling party should hang its head in shame.
In a statement after the Supreme Court's observations against Sharma, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the court has strengthened the party's resolve to fight "destructively divisive ideologies".
"The court has very rightly called out the BJP spokesperson for being 'single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country', and that she should apologise to the entire nation," Ramesh said.
"These remarks by the Supreme Court, which resonate with the entire country, should make the party in power hang its head in shame," he also said.
The Supreme Court slammed Sharma for her "disturbing" remark against Prophet Mohammad and said it led to unfortunate incidents and ignited emotions across the country.
Sharma's remark against the Prophet, made during the course of a TV debate, triggered protests across the country and invited sharp reactions from many Gulf countries. The BJP had subsequently suspended her from the party.
Ramesh said the Supreme Court has held a mirror to this government and called out the "base ugliness" of its actions.
"It is no secret that the BJP seeks to profit from inflaming communal passions. Today, the Supreme Court has strengthened the resolve in every single one of us who are fighting these destructively divisive ideologies," the Congress leader.
Ramesh said the Indian National Congress will never cease its fight against "polarising anti-national forces" of all types which plunge the nation into chaos for political gains and let all Indian citizens bear the consequences of their "perverse actions".

A curfew has been imposed and mobile internet has been shut to foil communal attempts to create communal clashes in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bhaderwah district. 
The development comes amid a controversy over the comment made on Prophet Muhammad by the now-expelled BJP leader Nupur Sharma.
Reports said there was an alleged hate speech made by a local cleric and an objectionable post about the Prophet on social media that led to the development.
FIRs have been registered in both the cases. The police have warned that anyone found violating law and order will not be spared.
According to the police, the curfew has been clamped as a precautionary measure with the situation currently normal and under control.

A day after terror group Al-Qaeda in the Subcontinent (AQIS) threatened attacks in several parts of India over the ongoing Prophet Mohammad row, Shiv Sena leader has responded.
Priyanka Chaturvedi on Wednesday said the West Asian countries that protested the remarks on Prophet Mohammad should also unequivocally denounce the threats from Al-Qaeda made in the aftermath of the controversy.
Taking to Twitter, the Rajya Sabha member wrote, 'Threats from Islamist terror groups such as Al Qaeda should be unequivocally denounced by these Middle East nations as well. Respecting religious sentiments is one thing, issuing threats based on it (is) another. No religion is so fragile that words of a few can bring down their faith.'

The Uttar Pradesh government has sealed a petrol pump in Kanpur’s Beckanganj after CCTV footage showed people taking fuel in bottles from the filling station ahead of the Friday’s clashes where petrol bombs were hurled. A Police officer said that since the sale of petrol in bottles is prohibited, the licence of the petrol pump has been suspended till further inquiry.   Police have also started putting up posters carrying photos of at least 40 people allegedly involved in the clashes.  Police on Monday arrested nine more persons, taking the total number of arrests to 38. Police also lodged a fresh FIR against eight persons – one Facebook account and seven Twitter handles — for allegedly spreading fake and provocative content about the June 3 violence. Clashes erupted in parts of Kanpur on Friday during a protest over the statements made on the Prophet by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma during a TV debate on May 27.
