Union Minister Jitendra Singh has said that India is reviewing its atomic energy law to allow private players in the Nuclear power sector and is considering a collaboration with foreign countries to build Small Modular Reactors

In a bid to expand the Nuclear power sector, India is mulling to allow private companies' participation. This state-controlled sector is aiming to develop small modular reactors to help decarbonize industry.&nbsp;
Atomic Energy minister Jitendra Singh in a written reply to questions in Parliament revealed that India is reviewing its six-decade-old atomic energy law to allow more involvement from non-state companies. Currently private technology and construction in nuclear plants are allowed, however, operations and fuel management are controlled by federal government companies.
The Union Minister also said that detailed technical talks are underway to assess the feasibility of the SMR technology, and the government is exploring collaboration with other countries for jointly developing such reactors.&nbsp;
India currently has about 7.5 gigawatts of atomic power capacity, all operated by state-run Nuclear Power Corp. of India Ltd. The nation aims to expand it to almost 22.5 gigawatts by 2031, Singh said. He further added that the increase will primarily happen through large-sized plants.
India which is the world's third largest emitter of greenhouse gases seeks clean sources of power to reduce its dependence on coal, which currently produces about 70% of India&rsquo;s electricity.&nbsp; This has pushed for more discussions about modular reactors or SMRs. India has also committed to have half its power generation capacity run on clean sources by the end of this decade.

International Atomic Energy Agency has expressed concern over the renewal of hostilities around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear site after powerful explosions were reported in the area of the largest nuclear plant in Europe

The International Atomic Energy Agency said "powerful explosions" rocked the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine overnight and Sunday morning. According to the UN nuclear watchdog some buildings, equipment, and systems at the plant, which is under Russian control, have been damaged but there has been nothing critical to nuclear safety and security. Russia's Defense Ministry on Sunday accused Kyiv of shelling the territory around Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine in turn blamed the Russian military for the shelling. The Zaporizhzhia plant, which Russia occupied shortly after its invasion of Ukraine, has since come under repeated shelling, with both Kyiv and Moscow accusing each other of attacks and risking a nuclear accident.

Ukraine's nuclear power provider accused Russia on Saturday of “kidnapping” the head of Europe's largest nuclear power plant, a facility now occupied by Russian troops and located in a region of Ukraine that Russian President Vladimir Putin has moved to annex illegally.
Russian forces seized the director-general of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Ihor Murashov, around 4 p.m. Friday, Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom said. That was just hours after Putin, in a sharp escalation of his war, signed treaties to absorb Moscow-controlled Ukrainian territory into Russia.
Energoatom said Russian troops stopped Murashov's car, blindfolded him and then took him to an undisclosed location.
“His detention by (Russia) jeopardizes the safety of Ukraine and Europe's largest nuclear power plant,” said Energoatom President Petro Kotin said.
Kotin demanded that Russia immediately release Murashov.
Russia did not immediately acknowledge seizing the plant director. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which has staff at the plant, did not immediately acknowledge Energoatom's claim of Murashov's capture.
The Zaporizhzhia plant repeatedly has been caught in the crossfire of the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian technicians continued running it after Russian troops seized the power station. The plant's last reactor was shut down in September amid ongoing shelling near the facility.
