Wanted in the Rs 13,500 crore bank fraud case fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi has lost appeal against his extradition to India. He is lodged in a UK prison since 2019.&nbsp;

The High Court in London on Wednesday ordered diamond merchant Nirav Modi's extradition to India to face charges of fraud and money laundering, amounting to an estimated USD 2 billion in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan scam case.
Lord Justice Jeremy Stuart-Smith and Justice Robert Jay, who presided over the appeal hearing earlier this year, delivered the verdict.
The 51-year-old businessman, who remains behind bars at Wandsworth prison in south-east London, had been granted permission to appeal against District Judge Sam Goozee's Westminster Magistrates' Court ruling in favour of extradition last February.
The leave to appeal in the High Court was granted on two grounds &ndash; under Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR) to hear arguments if it would &ldquo;unjust or oppressive&rdquo; to extradite Modi due to his mental state and Section 91 of the Extradition Act 2003, also related to mental ill health.
Modi is the subject of two sets of criminal proceedings, with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case relating to a large-scale fraud upon PNB through the fraudulent obtaining of letters of undertaking (LoUs) or loan agreements, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) case relating to the laundering of the proceeds of that fraud.

He also faces two additional charges of "causing the disappearance of evidence" and intimidating witnesses or &ldquo;criminal intimidation to cause death&rdquo;, which were added to the CBI case.&nbsp;

In the latest news in the $2 billion PNB scam, the  Central Bureau of Investigation has brought back Nirav Modi's close associate Subhash Shankar. The CBI in a major operation following a four year old Red Corner Notice have got absconding diamantaire Nirav Modi's known aide Subhash Shankar who was in Cairo. In 2018, the Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice against Nirav, his brother Nishal Modi and his employee Subhash Parab on the request of the CBI. 
In a Red Corner Notice,  the Interpol asks its 192 member countries to arrest or detain the person if spotted in their countries after which extradition or deportation proceedings can begin.

A UK court on Thursday ordered the extradition of fugitive diamantaire&nbsp;Nirav Modi, after a nearly two-year-long legal battle, and accepted India's case that he threatened witnesses and tampered with evidence.
The Westminster Magistrates&rsquo; Court also accepted the prima facie evidence against Nirav&nbsp;Modi for money laundering.&nbsp;The UK judge said that the detention condition in India was satisfactory and that Barrack 12 in&nbsp;Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail&nbsp;was considered acceptable as a place for detention.&nbsp;The court also found medical arrangements in India for Modi acceptable.
Fugitive diamantaire Modi&nbsp;is wanted on charges of fraud and money laundering in the estimated ₹11,400 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case.
The UK court said&nbsp;Nirav Modi will not be denied justice if he is extradited to India, also&nbsp;dismissing his&nbsp;'mental health concerns', says they are not unusual in a man in his circumstances.
The extradition order will be sent to the UK Secretary of State Priti Patel to sign, after which Modi can be extradited to India. However, Nirav&nbsp;Modi is eligible to appeal against the decision in the high court.&nbsp;
