New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani challenged US President Donald Trump, who has launched a crackdown on immigration, asserting that New York will be powered by immigrants and after his historic victory, will be &ldquo;led by an immigrant&rdquo;.
&ldquo;To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us,&rdquo; Mamdani said as he scripted history, becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to be elected to sit at the helm of the largest city in the US.
&ldquo;We refuse to let them dictate the rules of the game anymore. They can play by the same rules as the rest of us. Together, we will usher in a generation of change and if we embrace this brave new course, rather than fleeing from it, we can respond to oligarchy and authoritarianism with the strength it fears, not the appeasement it craves,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,&rdquo; Mamdani said.
&ldquo;And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. This is not only how we stop Trump, it&rsquo;s how we stop the next one.
&ldquo;So, Donald Trump, since I know you&rsquo;re watching, I have four words for you - Turn the volume up,&rdquo; he said to a thunderous applause from his supporters.
&ldquo;We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants. We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.
&ldquo;We will stand alongside unions and expand labour protections, because we know, just as Donald Trump does, that when working people have ironclad rights, the bosses who seek to extort them become very small indeed.
&ldquo;New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant. So hear me, President Trump, when I say this, to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us,&rdquo; Mamdani declared.
Mamdani said that his victory toppled a &ldquo;political dynasty&rdquo;, as he quoted the words of former Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru that with his win, the city has &ldquo;stepped out from the old into the new&rdquo;.
Mamdani emerged victorious in the closely-watched New York City mayoral election, defeating political heavyweight former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
&ldquo;Friends, we have toppled a political dynasty. Zohran Mamdani scripted history on Election Day as he emerged victorious in the closely-watched battle for New York City Mayor, becoming the first South Asian and Muslim to be elected to sit at the helm of the largest city in the US.
Mamdani, 34, had been the front-runner in the NYC Mayoral election for months and on Tuesday defeated Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and political heavyweight former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate and received US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s endorsement only on the eve of the election.
Mamdani had upset Cuomo in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor and was declared victorious in June this year.
&ldquo;Zohran Mamdani is running for Mayor to lower the cost of living for working class New Yorkers,&rdquo; his campaign had said as the young politician continued to garner support among the youth and working-class New Yorkers, who have been reeling under the burden of high costs and job insecurities amid a tough economic and political climate in the country.
With Mamdani&rsquo;s win, New York City and the US entered a new political and ideological era with the democratic socialist now at the helm of the citadel of capitalism.
Indian-descent Mamdani is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. He was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda and moved to New York City with his family when he was 7. Mamdani became a naturalised US citizen only recently in 2018.
Mamdani attended the Bronx High School of Science and received a Bachelor&rsquo;s Degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. In high school, he co-founded his school&rsquo;s first ever cricket team, which went on to participate in the Public School Athletic League&rsquo;s inaugural cricket season, his campaign profile said.
He worked as a foreclosure prevention housing counsellor, helping low-income homeowners of colour across Queens fight off eviction and stay in their homes, according to his official profile. His work led him to run for office and he was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 and represented the 36th Assembly District and its neighbourhoods of Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway and Astoria Heights.
&ldquo;After having spent every day negotiating with banks that valued profits over people, he came face-to-face with the reality that this housing crisis &ndash; one which predated this pandemic &ndash; was not natural to our lives, but instead a choice. "A choice that was the consequence of decades of pro-corporate policies enacted across our country as well as our state. Yet, like with any choice, we always have the opportunity to change and Zohran is excited to be a part of that,&rdquo; his profile said.
&ldquo;Zohran is proud to be the first South Asian man to serve in the NYS Assembly as well as the first Ugandan and only the third Muslim to ever be a member of the body. For too long, communities such as these have been left out of our state&rsquo;s politics and priorities. Zohran will seek to amplify the voices of the preferably unheard across both the district and the state for as long as he remains in office,&rdquo; it added.
Mamdani has promised to &ldquo;lower costs and make life easier&rdquo; for New Yorkers as the city gets &ldquo;too expensive&rdquo;. Mamdani has vowed that as Mayor, he will immediately freeze the rent for all stabilised tenants, and use every available resource to build the housing New Yorkers need and bring down the rent.
Promising fast, fare-free buses, his campaign said that as Mayor, he&rsquo;ll permanently eliminate the fare on every city bus &ndash; and make them faster by rapidly building priority lanes, expanding bus queue jump signals, and dedicated loading zones to keep double parkers out of the way.
Mamdani would also implement free childcare for every New Yorker aged 6 weeks to 5 years, ensuring high quality programming for all families.
With food prices out of control, his campaign also promised that as Mayor, he will create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit. Mamdani has a plan to bring down the cost-of-living through city-owned grocery stores, universal childcare, and other bold proposals, and he knows exactly how to pay for it, too, the campaign said.
During his campaign, Mamdani has faced questions and scepticism about his relative inexperience as a lawmaker and whether he is fit to run a city that has a budget of more than USD 100 billion.
&ldquo;I believe that I am the best qualified for this position because of a recognition of the greatest challenge that the city faces, and that challenge is affordability,&rdquo; Mamdani had told the New York Times.
His campaign has touted his fight for the working class in and outside the legislature, including his hunger strike alongside taxi drivers to achieve more than USD 450 million in debt relief, winning over USD 100 million in the state budget for increased subway service and a successful fare-free bus pilot, and organising New Yorkers to defeat a proposed dirty power plant.
&ldquo;The cost of living is crushing working people but Zohran believes that government can lower costs and make life easier in our city &mdash; he&rsquo;ll use every tool available to bring down the rent, create world class public transit, and make it easier to raise a family,&rdquo; his campaign has promised.

The victims, six females and four males aged 16 to 20, were predominantly teenagers. Despite the severity of the incident, none of the injuries are life-threatening, and all victims are expected to recover, NYPD officials confirmed during a press briefing on Thursday.

The New York judge presiding over Donald Trump's trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs ordered a delay Friday in proceedings that had been scheduled to get underway on March 25.
"Trial on this matter is adjourned for 30 days from the date of this letter on consent of the People," Judge Juan Merchan said in a court filing that will push the trial to at least mid-April.
The exact date will be determined at a hearing on March 25 which will also address complaints by the defense team about the disclosure of evidence ahead of trial, the letter said.
Prosecutors preparing to try Trump, the first former US president to face criminal prosecution, said Thursday they would accept a delay of up to 30 days after both sides received a deluge of case documents.
Trump, seeking a comeback as the Republican candidate in this year's election, is accused of covering up hush money payments related to his successful 2016 bid for the White House.
"An immediate adjournment is appropriate," Trump's legal team wrote on Thursday in a letter to the judge.
But it argued "30 days is not sufficient given the volume of recently produced materials and the nature of the ongoing disputes."
Prosecutors say Trump illegally covered up remittances to his longtime aide Michael Cohen to reimburse him for payments made to bury stories revealing Trump's alleged extramarital sexual relations with porn star Stormy Daniels and a Playboy model. He denies the charges.
A New York grand jury indicted Trump in March 2023 over the payments made to Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.
A Trump campaign statement said the former president and his attorneys "have been consistent and steadfast that this case has no basis in law or fact, and should be dismissed."

"As New York works to fight the loneliness epidemic, some help from honorary Ambassador Ruth Westheimer may be just what the doctor ordered," Governor Hochul said in a statement.&nbsp;
"Studies show individuals experiencing loneliness had a 32 percent higher risk of dying early and we need leaders like Dr. Ruth to help address this critical component of our mental health crisis," she added.&nbsp;

A five-story floating jail in New York is set to be shut off, sending more than 500 prisoners to a facility in Rikers Island.

Docked in the shallows off an industrial edge of the South Bronx, the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center is a five-story jail barge that stretches the length of two football fields, resembling a container ship stacked with cargo.
It arrived in 1992 as a temporary measure to ease overcrowding on Rikers Island, the city&rsquo;s main jail complex for detainees awaiting trial. Three decades later, the 800-bed lockup &ndash; believed to be the last operating prison ship in the United States &mdash; is finally closing down.
It will be fully vacated by the end of this week, officials said, as part of a broader plan to replace the city's long-troubled correctional system with a network of smaller jails. For now, most of the roughly 500 detainees incarcerated on the ship will be transferred to Rikers Island, according to the Department of Correction, though the jails there are eventually supposed to close down, too.
Detainees and advocates have long regarded the boat as a grim vestige of mass incarceration, an enduring symbol of the city&rsquo;s failures to reform dangerous jails that exist on the periphery of New York, largely out of sight of many residents.
In recent years, the unusual nautical jail has drawn attention primarily for its failures: last September, a 44-year-old man, Gregory Acevedo, jumped from the top of the ship to his death; the year before that, Stephan Khadu, 24, died after contracting a form of treatable meningitis while in custody.
Darren Mack, co-director of the advocacy group Freedom Agenda, described the boat as a warehouse used by the Department of Corrections to hold detainees, mostly Black and Hispanic men, with minimal oversight. While noting the closure was long overdue, he added, transferring the inmates from the boat to Rikers Island "is not a good solution... because that transfer is just shifting people from the frying pan into the fire."
The last of an armada of floating jails used by New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Vernon C. Bain sits across the river from Rikers Island, between a wastewater treatment plant and a wholesale fish market.
Detainees are afforded a daily hour of recreation on a caged upper deck, where they were recently seen playing basketball on a sunny morning. Otherwise, their only natural light beams through the ship&rsquo;s tiny portholes.
Those who&rsquo;ve spent time on board say the boat rocks in the current. Its fading blue and white exterior &ndash; a far cry from the freshly-painted surfaces visible in the 1993 film &ldquo;Carlito&rsquo;s Way&rdquo; &ndash; is known to leak in the rain, occasionally short-circuiting the electrical system. Chunks of rust crack off the walls and ceilings.
Inside, detainees say they are packed into dormitories that grow suffocatingly hot in the summer, with cots that sit just a few inches from each other.
The use of maritime jails in the United States has long been controversial, dating back to the earliest days of the Revolutionary War, when thousands of Americans died aboard British ships parked in the New York Harbor.
Since then, the concept has been used sparingly &ndash; during the gold rush in California, most notably &ndash; often drawing allegations of cruelty and neglect, according to a recent study.
In the 1960s, a proposal by New York's correction commissioner to house inmates on repurposed ships was sunk by other local officials, who said the boats would give visitors the wrong image of the city. That sentiment began to change in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as drug arrests during the crack epidemic brought the population of Rikers Island to historic highs.
By the time the Vernon C. Bain arrived in the South Bronx, the city had already deployed four other floating jails &ndash; including two converted city ferries and a former trooper ship nicknamed the &ldquo;Love Boat&rdquo; &ndash; as low-cost, temporary facilities.
Mayor Edward Koch, an early champion of the idea, assured reporters that seasick inmates would be given Dramamine, dismissing questions about the boats&rsquo; viability by noting they were &ldquo;better accommodations&rdquo; than Rikers Island.
Stephan Khadu may have reached a similar conclusion as he awaited trial in a gang conspiracy case at Rikers Island. With the city's main jail complex gripped by both the coronavirus pandemic and rising violence in May 2020, Khadu volunteered to transfer to the Vernon C. Bain.
He later told his mother by phone that he would stare out the porthole of his new dormitory, pretending he was riding a jet ski in Miami.
But by the following summer, family members said, Khadu was complaining of the boat&rsquo;s stifling heat, mold and rodents that chewed through his food containers. He suffered a seizure in July of 2021. Two months later, he had a second seizure. He died on the way to the hospital, a few days short of his 24th birthday.
The cause of death was later revealed to be a complication of lymphocytic meningitis, a rodent-borne viral disease that, if properly treated, is not typically fatal.
His mom, Lezandre Khadu, blames the conditions on the boat.
"He didn't go in there sick," she said. &ldquo;There is nothing really to say other than that they didn't care.... it wasn't their son, it wasn't their husband, it wasn't their child."
The New York State Attorney General investigated Khadu&rsquo;s death but said they could not confirm allegations of improper care.
When the boat empties out, it won&rsquo;t be the first time. It closed in the mid-1990s, as the population of Rikers Island began to fall. But unlike the other shuttered floating jails, the Vernon C. Bain reopened &ndash; initially as a juvenile justice center under Mayor Rudy Giuliani, before later transitioning to a standard adult jail.
A spokesperson for the Department of Correction, Latima Johnson, declined to say what the city plans to do with the boat going forward. It will remain, for now, within the custody of the Department of Correction.

The 55 carat ruby is named the "Estrela de Fura."

"You know, every gemstone has got its own story. And this ruby talks to you," said Shetty.
The "Estrela de Fura" is expected to fetch over 30 million dollars.
The Ruby is being offered as part of Sotheby&rsquo;s &ldquo;Magnificent Jewels&rdquo; auction. Also in the auction is a stunning 10 carat pink diamond, known as "The Eternal Pink" diamond.

The accused Indian passenger was stated by the airlines staff to be under the influence of liquor and he urinated on his co-passenger during an argument, they said.
The incident took place on board American Airlines flight AA 292 and the alleged "unruly" passenger was apprehended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) after the plane landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport around 9 PM on Sunday.
The victim passenger has filed a formal complaint with the airlines, the sources told PTI.
The carrier reported the matter to the Delhi airport before landing and both the passengers involved were later handed over to the Delhi Police.
A senior police officer said legal action has been taken in the matter under non-cognisable offences.
The police initiated the action after the complaint given by the airlines staff about the unruly behaviour of the passenger.
"There was no corroborative evidence or complaint given by co-passengers regarding someone peeing on them," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Airport) Devesh Kumar Mahla said.
Incidents of passengers allegedly urinating on co-passengers purportedly after consuming liquor have been reported in the recent past.

Lithium-ion batteries used to power electric bicycles and scooters have already sparked 22 fires that caused 36 injuries and two deaths in New York City this year, four times the number of fires linked to the batteries by this time last year, officials said.
On Friday, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said Mayor Eric Adams' administration is &ldquo;coming at this problem from every single angle,&rdquo; including working with the City Council and the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission on additional regulations for the batteries and educating the public on their proper use and storage.
&ldquo;These are incredibly dangerous devices, and we must make sure that members of the community are handling them properly and using them safely,&rdquo; Kavanagh said at a briefing on public safety.
Many of the fires blamed on the batteries have been caused by malfunctioning devices left to charge overnight and placed in a hallway or near a door where they can trap people inside a burning apartment.
Three children and an adult were injured this month when a charging battery started a fire in their upper Manhattan apartment at 1:30 am, officials said.
Fire Department Chief of Operations John Esposito said after the February 5 blaze that when the battery overheated and sparked a fire, "it blocked the egress out of the apartment, trapping the family.&rdquo; Kavanagh said the e-bike batteries &ldquo;present often an immediate inability to exit one's room or one's apartment or one's home.

A man driving a U-Haul truck swerved onto sidewalks and ploughed into scooter riders in New York City on Monday, injuring multiple people before police were able to pin the careening vehicle against a building following a mile-long pursuit through Brooklyn.
At least eight people were hurt, two critically. The driver was arrested. His son identified him as Weng Sor, 62, a troubled man with a history of violence and stints behind bars.
New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell described the driver's behaviour as a "violent rampage," but said there was no evidence of "terrorism involvement."
The truck sped through the Bay Ridge neighbourhood before police stopped it more than 5 kilometres away, near the entrance to a tunnel leading from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
Weng Sor's son, Stephen Sor, 30, told The Associated Press that his father had a history of mental illness and, until recently, was living in Las Vegas.
"Very frequently he'll choose to skip out on his medications and do something like this," Stephen Sor said in an interview outside his Brooklyn home. "This isn't the first time he's been arrested. It's not the first time he's gone to jail."

Katherine Aronova said she saw the U-Haul run a red light, hit a delivery worker on an e-bike in the middle of the road and drag him a short distance.

A security camera video showed the truck clip a scooter, then swerve onto a sidewalk and nearly plough into a pedestrian, who dived to safety just in time. A police patrol car then followed the truck down the sidewalk at high speed.

Aerial video from news helicopters showed the truck on a sidewalk after the chase ended, its path blocked by a police cruiser. Authorities examined the vehicle to make sure it didn't contain explosives.
Sewell said a police officer responding to the incident was among the injured.

"I try to just distance, as long as he leaves us alone," Sor said.
Weng Sor's criminal records date back nearly two decades.
In 2015, he stabbed his brother in Las Vegas and served about 17 months in a Nevada prison, according to court and prison records.
In 2020, he stabbed someone in the arm and chest with a knife and was sentenced to 364 days in county jail, with about 10 months of time already served.
Before pleading guilty in that case, Sor underwent several months of evaluations at state psychiatric facilities until he was found competent to face charges, court records show. The records don't list a possible diagnosis, but note that Sor was placed on medications.
In an earlier Nevada case, Sor was ordered to undergo counselling and perform community service after pleading guilty to misdemeanour battery in 2005.
The judge noted that he was soon moving to New York and ordered him to submit to a mental health evaluation once there.

The incident was reported on January 30, and it came to light after the United Statesbased traveller, identified as Meenakshi Sengupta, lodged a complaint against the flight attendant accusing them of refusing to help her put the handbag weighing more than 5 pounds in the overhead cabin as she was unable to do so because of weak limbs.
In her complaint to the Delhi Police and the Civil Air, Meenakshi Sengupta said that she had also requested for wheelchair assistance to her seat, "I was also wearing a brace which was visible to everyone and they would know that I have some discomfort...because I CANNOT carry any weight in my hands at all and I'm weak from the surgery and don't need to strain myself by walking a lot." She said, "The ground staff was very supportive and helped me get into the aircraft and put my handbag on the side of the seat. Once inside the flight, I had a conversation with the air hostess and I explained my health condition to them...None of them mentioned about putting my handbag away. After the flight was about to take off, cabin lights were dimmed. At that time an air hostess came to put my hand bag in the overhead compartment. I requested her to help me put it but she refused to do so and told me it's not her job to do.

Meanwhile, India's regulator- the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken cognisance of the case and asked American Airlines to submit its report.
The airline, in its official statement, said that its Customer Relations team has reached out to Sengupta to refund the unused portion of her ticket.
