Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani vowed to govern &ldquo;expansively and audaciously&rdquo; and deliver an agenda of affordability for New Yorkers as he thanked his family from &ldquo;Kampala to Delhi&rdquo; after being sworn-in as the 112th Mayor of New York City.
Mamdani was administered the oath of office by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont at a ceremonial inauguration outside City Hall on Thursday, the seat of New York City government, on New Year&rsquo;s day.
He was formally sworn-in as New York City&rsquo;s 112th Mayor by New York Attorney General Letitia James at a private ceremony held at the turn of the new year on December 31 in an old subway station here.
He became the first South Asian and Muslim elected to helm the largest city in the US.
In his nearly 25 minute speech to New Yorkers after taking the oath of office Thursday, Mamdani said that &ldquo;beginning today, we will govern expansively and audaciously. We may not always succeed. But never will we be accused of lacking the courage to try.&rdquo;
He vowed that under his administration, City Hall will &ldquo;deliver an agenda of safety, affordability, and abundance, where government looks and lives like the people it represents, never flinches in the fight against corporate greed, and refuses to cower before challenges that others have deemed too complicated.&rdquo;
Indian-descent Mamdani is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. He was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda and moved to New York City with his family when he was 7. Mamdani became a naturalized US citizen only recently in 2018.
Mamdani thanked his parents, who were present for the swearing-in ceremony, as well as his wife Rama Duwaji for their support. He also expressed gratitude to his family from Uganda to India.
&ldquo;Thank you to my parents, Mama and Baba, for raising me, for teaching me how to be in this world, and for having brought me to this city. Thank you to my family, from Kampala to Delhi. And thank you to my wife, Rama, for being my best friend, and for always showing me the beauty in everyday things,&rdquo; he said.
Thousands of Mamdani&rsquo;s supporters, from youth to the elderly, braved freezing temperatures on January 1 and stood for hours outside and near City Hall, cheering him and celebrating his victory and inauguration at a block party organized on the occasion. They said the New Year was ushering in an era of hope and promise as the new Mamdani administration begins its term in the city.
The supporters wore merchandise such as pins, hats and T-shirts emblazoned with Mamdani&rsquo;s name and images.
Mamdani also sounded a note of unity as he addressed the eight and a half million New Yorkers, saying together, they will tell a new story of the city.
"This will not be a tale of one city, governed only by the one percent. Nor will it be a tale of two cities, the rich versus the poor. It will be a tale of eight and a half million cities, each of them a New Yorker with hopes and fears, each a universe, each of them woven together."
"The authors of this story will speak Pashto and Mandarin, Yiddish and Creole. They will pray in mosques, at shul, at church, at Gurdwaras and Mandirs and temples. And many will not pray at all.&rdquo;
"Few of these eight and a half million will fit into neat and easy boxes. Some will be voters from Hillside Avenue or Fordham Road who supported President Trump a year before they voted for me, tired of being failed by their party&rsquo;s establishment," Mamdani said.
"The majority will not use the language that we often expect from those who wield influence. I welcome the change. For too long, those fluent in the good grammar of civility have deployed decorum to mask agendas of cruelty,&rdquo; he said.
This was the only reference to Trump that he made in his entire speech.
Mamdani had registered a decisive and historic win at the polls in November as he defeated Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and political heavyweight former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate and received US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s endorsement only on the eve of the election.
In a fiery victory speech, Mamdani had challenged Trump on immigration, heralded the toppling of "political dynasty&rdquo; and said his election symbolises &ldquo;hope&rdquo; over tyranny and "big money&rdquo; as he cited former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to assert that the city has stepped out from the &ldquo;old into the new.&rdquo;
Mamdani had invoked Nehru as he spoke about ushering in a new era in New York City politics.
&ldquo;Standing before you, I think of the words of Jawaharlal Nehru: &ldquo;A moment comes, but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance&rdquo;.&rdquo;
"Tonight we have stepped out from the old into the new. So let us speak now, with clarity and conviction that cannot be misunderstood, about what this new age will deliver, and for whom,&rdquo; he had said.

Khalid and few others have been booked under the stringent anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 (UAPA) and provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly being the "masterminds" of the February 2020 Delhi riots, which left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured.
Meanwhile, a group of US lawmakers has written to Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra urging that Khalid be granted bail and a &ldquo;fair, timely trial in accordance with international law.&rdquo; US Representatives Jim McGovern and Jamie Raskin are among eight lawmakers who wrote to Kwatra expressing &ldquo;our continued concern regarding the prolonged pre-trial detention of individuals charged in connection with the February 2020 violence in Delhi,&rdquo; including Khalid.
&ldquo;The US and India share a long standing strategic partnership that has historically been rooted in democratic values, constitutional governance and strong people-to-people ties,&rdquo; the letter said adding that as the world's largest democracies, both nations have an interest in protecting and upholding freedom, the rule of law, human rights and pluralism.
&ldquo;It is in this spirit&rdquo; that the lawmakers said they are raising their concerns regarding Khalid&rsquo;s detention.
The lawmakers claimed that human rights organisations, legal experts and global media have raised questions about the fairness of the investigation and legal process related to Khalid&rsquo;s detention.
He "has been detained without bail for five years for charges levied under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, which independent human rights experts have warned may contravene international standards of equality before the law, due process and proportionality.&rdquo;
The US Representatives further added that they understand that these matters are presently under consideration before the Supreme Court of India and welcomed the news that Khalid received temporary bail to attend his sister's wedding.
They urged that Khalid be granted bail and released for the duration of the court's proceedings. &ldquo;With respect for India's democratic institutions and its role as a key partner of the US, we request that your Government share the steps being taken to ensure that the judicial proceedings against Khalid and those of his co-accused who remain in detention comport with international standards,&rdquo; the lawmakers said.

Zohran Mamdani, the young upstart of the US left, was sworn in Thursday to take over as New York mayor for a term sure to see him cross swords with President Donald Trump.
After the clocks struck midnight, bringing in 2026, Mamdani took his oath of office at an abandoned subway stop to begin managing the United States' largest city. He is New York's first Muslim mayor.
His office said the understated venue beneath City Hall reflected his commitment to working people, after the 34-year-old Democrat campaigned on promises to address the soaring cost of living.
"This is truly the honor and the privilege of a lifetime," Mamdani told reporters after taking his oath.
But it remains to be seen if Mamdani -- virtually unknown a year ago -- can deliver on his ambitious agenda, which envisions rent freezes, universal childcare and free public buses.
Once an election is over, "symbolism only goes so far with voters. Results begin to matter a whole lot more," New York University lecturer John Kane said.
How Trump behaves could be a decisive factor.
The Republican, himself a New Yorker, has repeatedly criticized Mamdani, but the pair held surprisingly cordial talks at the White House in November.
Lincoln Mitchell, a political analyst and professor at Columbia University, said the meeting "couldn't have gone better from Mamdani's perspective."
But he warned their relationship could quickly sour.
One flashpoint might be immigration raids as Trump wages an expanding crackdown on migrants across the United States.
Mamdani has vowed to protect immigrant communities.
Before the November vote, the president also threatened to slash federal funding for New York if it picked Mamdani, whom he called a "communist lunatic."
The mayor-elect has said he believes Trump is a fascist.

Mamdani's private swearing-in to start his four-year term was performed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who successfully prosecuted Trump for fraud.
A larger, ceremonial inauguration is scheduled later Thursday with speeches from left-wing allies Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Around 4,000 ticketed guests are expected to attend the event outside City Hall.
Mamdani's team has also organized a block party that it says will enable tens of thousands of people to watch the ceremony at streetside viewing areas along Broadway.
In a first for the city, Mamdani is using several Korans to be sworn in as mayor -- two from his family and one that belonged to Puerto Rico-born Black writer Arturo Schomburg, The New York Times reported.
The new job comes with a change of address as he swaps his rent-controlled apartment in the borough of Queens for the luxurious mayor's residence in Manhattan.
Some had wondered if he would move to the official mansion given his campaigning on affordability issues. Mamdani said he is doing so mainly for security reasons.
Born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin, Mamdani moved to New York at age seven and enjoyed an elite upbringing with only a relatively brief stint in politics, becoming a member of the New York State Assembly before being elected mayor.
Compensating for his inexperience, he is surrounding himself with seasoned aides recruited from past mayoral administrations and former US president Joe Biden's government.
Mamdani has also opened dialogue with business leaders, some of whom predicted a massive exodus of wealthy New Yorkers if he won. Real estate leaders have debunked those claims.
As a defender of Palestinian rights, he will have to reassure the Jewish community of his inclusive leadership.
Recently, one of his hires resigned after it was revealed she had posted antisemitic tweets years ago.

Mamdani had upset Cuomo in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor and was declared victorious in June this year.
&ldquo;Zohran Mamdani is running for Mayor to lower the cost of living for working class New Yorkers,&rdquo; his campaign had said as the young politician continued to garner support among the youth and working-class New Yorkers, who have been reeling under the burden of high costs and job insecurities amid a tough economic and political climate in the country.
With Mamdani&rsquo;s win, New York City and the US entered a new political and ideological era with the democratic socialist now at the helm of the citadel of capitalism.

He worked as a foreclosure prevention housing counsellor, helping low-income homeowners of colour across Queens fight off eviction and stay in their homes, according to his official profile. His work led him to run for office and he was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 and represented the 36th Assembly District and its neighbourhoods of Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway and Astoria Heights.
&ldquo;After having spent every day negotiating with banks that valued profits over people, he came face-to-face with the reality that this housing crisis &ndash; one which predated this pandemic &ndash; was not natural to our lives, but instead a choice. "A choice that was the consequence of decades of pro-corporate policies enacted across our country as well as our state. Yet, like with any choice, we always have the opportunity to change and Zohran is excited to be a part of that,&rdquo; his profile said.
&ldquo;Zohran is proud to be the first South Asian man to serve in the NYS Assembly as well as the first Ugandan and only the third Muslim to ever be a member of the body. For too long, communities such as these have been left out of our state&rsquo;s politics and priorities. Mamdani has promised to &ldquo;lower costs and make life easier&rdquo; for New Yorkers as the city gets &ldquo;too expensive&rdquo;. Mamdani has vowed that as Mayor, he will immediately freeze the rent for all stabilised tenants, and use every available resource to build the housing New Yorkers need and bring down the rent.
Promising fast, fare-free buses, his campaign said that as Mayor, he&rsquo;ll permanently eliminate the fare on every city bus &ndash; and make them faster by rapidly building priority lanes, expanding bus queue jump signals, and dedicated loading zones to keep double parkers out of the way.
Mamdani would also implement free childcare for every New Yorker aged 6 weeks to 5 years, ensuring high quality programming for all families.
With food prices out of control, his campaign also promised that as Mayor, he will create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit. Mamdani has a plan to bring down the cost-of-living through city-owned grocery stores, universal childcare, and other bold proposals, and he knows exactly how to pay for it, too, the campaign said.
During his campaign, Mamdani has faced questions and scepticism about his relative inexperience as a lawmaker and whether he is fit to run a city that has a budget of more than USD 100 billion.
&ldquo;I believe that I am the best qualified for this position because of a recognition of the greatest challenge that the city faces, and that challenge is affordability,&rdquo; Mamdani had told the New York Times.
His campaign has touted his fight for the working class in and outside the legislature, including his hunger strike alongside taxi drivers to achieve more than USD 450 million in debt relief, winning over USD 100 million in the state budget for increased subway service and a successful fare-free bus pilot, and organising New Yorkers to defeat a proposed dirty power plant.
&ldquo;The cost of living is crushing working people but Zohran believes that government can lower costs and make life easier in our city &mdash; he&rsquo;ll use every tool available to bring down the rent, create world class public transit, and make it easier to raise a family,&rdquo; his campaign has promised.

The New York judge presiding over Donald Trump's trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs ordered a delay Friday in proceedings that had been scheduled to get underway on March 25.
"Trial on this matter is adjourned for 30 days from the date of this letter on consent of the People," Judge Juan Merchan said in a court filing that will push the trial to at least mid-April.
The exact date will be determined at a hearing on March 25 which will also address complaints by the defense team about the disclosure of evidence ahead of trial, the letter said.
Prosecutors preparing to try Trump, the first former US president to face criminal prosecution, said Thursday they would accept a delay of up to 30 days after both sides received a deluge of case documents.
Trump, seeking a comeback as the Republican candidate in this year's election, is accused of covering up hush money payments related to his successful 2016 bid for the White House.
"An immediate adjournment is appropriate," Trump's legal team wrote on Thursday in a letter to the judge.
But it argued "30 days is not sufficient given the volume of recently produced materials and the nature of the ongoing disputes."
Prosecutors say Trump illegally covered up remittances to his longtime aide Michael Cohen to reimburse him for payments made to bury stories revealing Trump's alleged extramarital sexual relations with porn star Stormy Daniels and a Playboy model. He denies the charges.

A five-story floating jail in New York is set to be shut off, sending more than 500 prisoners to a facility in Rikers Island.

Docked in the shallows off an industrial edge of the South Bronx, the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center is a five-story jail barge that stretches the length of two football fields, resembling a container ship stacked with cargo.
It arrived in 1992 as a temporary measure to ease overcrowding on Rikers Island, the city&rsquo;s main jail complex for detainees awaiting trial. Three decades later, the 800-bed lockup &ndash; believed to be the last operating prison ship in the United States &mdash; is finally closing down.
It will be fully vacated by the end of this week, officials said, as part of a broader plan to replace the city's long-troubled correctional system with a network of smaller jails. For now, most of the roughly 500 detainees incarcerated on the ship will be transferred to Rikers Island, according to the Department of Correction, though the jails there are eventually supposed to close down, too.
Detainees and advocates have long regarded the boat as a grim vestige of mass incarceration, an enduring symbol of the city&rsquo;s failures to reform dangerous jails that exist on the periphery of New York, largely out of sight of many residents.
In recent years, the unusual nautical jail has drawn attention primarily for its failures: last September, a 44-year-old man, Gregory Acevedo, jumped from the top of the ship to his death; the year before that, Stephan Khadu, 24, died after contracting a form of treatable meningitis while in custody.
Darren Mack, co-director of the advocacy group Freedom Agenda, described the boat as a warehouse used by the Department of Corrections to hold detainees, mostly Black and Hispanic men, with minimal oversight. While noting the closure was long overdue, he added, transferring the inmates from the boat to Rikers Island "is not a good solution... because that transfer is just shifting people from the frying pan into the fire."
The last of an armada of floating jails used by New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Vernon C. Bain sits across the river from Rikers Island, between a wastewater treatment plant and a wholesale fish market.
Detainees are afforded a daily hour of recreation on a caged upper deck, where they were recently seen playing basketball on a sunny morning. Otherwise, their only natural light beams through the ship&rsquo;s tiny portholes.
Those who&rsquo;ve spent time on board say the boat rocks in the current. Its fading blue and white exterior &ndash; a far cry from the freshly-painted surfaces visible in the 1993 film &ldquo;Carlito&rsquo;s Way&rdquo; &ndash; is known to leak in the rain, occasionally short-circuiting the electrical system. Chunks of rust crack off the walls and ceilings.
Inside, detainees say they are packed into dormitories that grow suffocatingly hot in the summer, with cots that sit just a few inches from each other.
The use of maritime jails in the United States has long been controversial, dating back to the earliest days of the Revolutionary War, when thousands of Americans died aboard British ships parked in the New York Harbor.
Since then, the concept has been used sparingly &ndash; during the gold rush in California, most notably &ndash; often drawing allegations of cruelty and neglect, according to a recent study.
In the 1960s, a proposal by New York's correction commissioner to house inmates on repurposed ships was sunk by other local officials, who said the boats would give visitors the wrong image of the city. That sentiment began to change in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as drug arrests during the crack epidemic brought the population of Rikers Island to historic highs.
By the time the Vernon C. Bain arrived in the South Bronx, the city had already deployed four other floating jails &ndash; including two converted city ferries and a former trooper ship nicknamed the &ldquo;Love Boat&rdquo; &ndash; as low-cost, temporary facilities.
Mayor Edward Koch, an early champion of the idea, assured reporters that seasick inmates would be given Dramamine, dismissing questions about the boats&rsquo; viability by noting they were &ldquo;better accommodations&rdquo; than Rikers Island.
Stephan Khadu may have reached a similar conclusion as he awaited trial in a gang conspiracy case at Rikers Island. With the city's main jail complex gripped by both the coronavirus pandemic and rising violence in May 2020, Khadu volunteered to transfer to the Vernon C. Bain.
He later told his mother by phone that he would stare out the porthole of his new dormitory, pretending he was riding a jet ski in Miami.
But by the following summer, family members said, Khadu was complaining of the boat&rsquo;s stifling heat, mold and rodents that chewed through his food containers. He suffered a seizure in July of 2021. Two months later, he had a second seizure. He died on the way to the hospital, a few days short of his 24th birthday.
The cause of death was later revealed to be a complication of lymphocytic meningitis, a rodent-borne viral disease that, if properly treated, is not typically fatal.
His mom, Lezandre Khadu, blames the conditions on the boat.
"He didn't go in there sick," she said. &ldquo;There is nothing really to say other than that they didn't care.... it wasn't their son, it wasn't their husband, it wasn't their child."
The New York State Attorney General investigated Khadu&rsquo;s death but said they could not confirm allegations of improper care.
When the boat empties out, it won&rsquo;t be the first time. It closed in the mid-1990s, as the population of Rikers Island began to fall. But unlike the other shuttered floating jails, the Vernon C. Bain reopened &ndash; initially as a juvenile justice center under Mayor Rudy Giuliani, before later transitioning to a standard adult jail.
A spokesperson for the Department of Correction, Latima Johnson, declined to say what the city plans to do with the boat going forward. It will remain, for now, within the custody of the Department of Correction.

&ldquo;The reason for this move is to centralize operations on the island to more efficiently manage people in custody and deploy staff and resources,&rdquo; Johnson said in an email.
Once the move is complete, Lezandre Khadu is planning a trip to see the boat where her son spent the final year of his life. She intends to celebrate its long-delayed closure.
&ldquo;I am beyond pleased that that place is getting closed down where my son lost his life in the most horrific torturing way,&rdquo; she said.

The incident took place on board American Airlines flight AA 292 and the alleged "unruly" passenger was apprehended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) after the plane landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport around 9 PM on Sunday.
The victim passenger has filed a formal complaint with the airlines, the sources told PTI.
The carrier reported the matter to the Delhi airport before landing and both the passengers involved were later handed over to the Delhi Police.
A senior police officer said legal action has been taken in the matter under non-cognisable offences.
The police initiated the action after the complaint given by the airlines staff about the unruly behaviour of the passenger.

Lithium-ion batteries used to power electric bicycles and scooters have already sparked 22 fires that caused 36 injuries and two deaths in New York City this year, four times the number of fires linked to the batteries by this time last year, officials said.
On Friday, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said Mayor Eric Adams' administration is &ldquo;coming at this problem from every single angle,&rdquo; including working with the City Council and the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission on additional regulations for the batteries and educating the public on their proper use and storage.
&ldquo;These are incredibly dangerous devices, and we must make sure that members of the community are handling them properly and using them safely,&rdquo; Kavanagh said at a briefing on public safety.
Many of the fires blamed on the batteries have been caused by malfunctioning devices left to charge overnight and placed in a hallway or near a door where they can trap people inside a burning apartment.
Three children and an adult were injured this month when a charging battery started a fire in their upper Manhattan apartment at 1:30 am, officials said.
Fire Department Chief of Operations John Esposito said after the February 5 blaze that when the battery overheated and sparked a fire, "it blocked the egress out of the apartment, trapping the family.&rdquo; Kavanagh said the e-bike batteries &ldquo;present often an immediate inability to exit one's room or one's apartment or one's home.
So it's really critical that we work with all our partners up here in government around enforcement, around education, around combating the hazards that these present to citizens and first responders.&rdquo;
