The nine BJD MPs in Rajya Sabha have been instructed by Naveen Patnaik to act as a strong opposition in the Parliament.

BJD president Naveen Patnaik held a meeting with his party's nine Rajya Sabha MPs on Monday and asked them to emerge as a "vibrant and strong" opposition in the Upper House of Parliament during its upcoming session that would begin on June 27.
At the meeting, Patnaik also asked the lawmakers to raise issues concerning the state's interests in a befitting manner.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the party's leader in Rajya Sabha Sasmit Patra said, "The BJD MPs this time will not be confined to speaking on issues only, but are determined to agitate if the BJP-led government at the Centre ignores Odisha's interest."
Besides raising the demand for special status to Odisha, the BJD MPs will raise the issues of poor mobile connectivity and low density of bank branches in the state, he said.
"Odisha's demand for revision of coal royalty has been ignored by the Centre for the last 10 years. This is causing great loss to the people of the state who are deprived of their rightful share," he added.
Maintaining that the nine MPs in Rajya Sabha will act as a strong opposition, Patra said Patnaik has given clear instructions to fight for the rights of the state's people in the Parliament.
When asked whether BJD would maintain its earlier stance of giving issue-based support to the BJP-led government, he said, "No more support to BJP, only opposition. We may go to any extent to protect the interests of Odisha." Later, Patra told PTI, "There is no question of supporting the BJP. The BJD president asked us to act as a strong and vibrant opposition if the NDA government continues to ignore the genuine demands of Odisha." The BJD has nine MPs in the Rajya Sabha, while it failed to win any seat in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, for the first time since its formation in 1997.
The BJD also lost power in the state with the BJP bringing an end to its government of 24 years.
The BJD not only supported the BJP in Parliament on different issues over the last few years but also helped Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw get elected to Rajya Sabha in 2019 and 2024.
At a meeting with senior BJD leaders on Sunday, Patnaik had said, "You all know that the BJP has got four seats more than the majority mark in the Odisha assembly. At the Centre also, it does not have a majority on its own. Hence, you should work hard, stay united, and strengthen the party."&nbsp;

Patnaik said many people in the BJP have been spreading rumours about his health for the last 10 years. He reiterated, "Let me assure the PM that I am in perfect health and I have been campaigning in our state for the last month."

Moments after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement during an election rally saying he will constitute a special committee to investigate Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik's deteriorating health, the BJD chief responded to the remarks.
Patnaik in a press conference said, "I understand that the prime minister in a public meeting has stated that I am in a bad health and he wants to institute an inquiry into this matter."&nbsp;
"If he (PM Modi)was so concerned about my health then all he had to do was pick up a telephone and ring me up and ask me about my health," he added.

Pertinently, Modi while addressing a rally said that many of Naveen's well-wishers have been saying that his health has deteriorated and further alleged that there could be a conspiracy behind it.

In the clip, Patnaik's alleged political heir and former Tamil Nadu-born bureaucrat VK Pandian can be seen trying to hide the CM's trembling hand. The BJP, sharing the clip, viewed it as a symbolic attempt at power grab by Pandian.&nbsp;
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a lengthy post on X called it a distressing video. He claimed that Pandian controlling the hand movement of Patnaik is synonymous with his control over the Odisha government.&nbsp;
"This is a deeply distressing video. Shri VK Pandian ji is even controlling the hand movements of Shri Naveen Babu. I shudder to imagine the level of control a retired ex-bureaucrat from Tamil Nadu is currently exercising over the future of Odisha! BJP is determined is give back the reins of Odisha to the people of the State," the caption read.
Responding to the BJP jibes, Patnaik said that the saffron party is making an issue out of a non-issue by discussing his hands.&nbsp;
"I believe the BJP, which is known to make non-issues into issues, is discussing my hands. This will certainly not work," said the 77-year-old said in a video statement shared by BJD.&nbsp;

BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Puri, Sambit Patra, caused significant controversy by referring to Lord Jagannath, a revered deity in Odisha, as an ardent 'bhakt' (devotee) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.&nbsp;
This statement was met with strong condemnation from Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who deemed it an insult to Lord Jagannath and offensive to the sentiments of millions of devotees.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Patnaik said, "Mahaprabhu Shree Jagannatha is the Lord of Universe. Calling Mahaprabhu a bhakt of another human being is an insult to the Lord. This has hurt the sentiments and demeaned the faith of crores of Jagannatha bhaktas and Odias across the world. The Lord is the greatest Symbol of Odia Asmita. Calling Mahaprabhu a bhakt of another human being is totally condemnable. I strongly denounce the statement made by the BJP Puri Lok Sabha candidate and I appeal to the BJP to keep the Lord above any political discourse. By this you have deeply hurt Odia Asmita and this will be remembered and condemned by people of Odisha for a very long time."
Soon after Patra landed in the row, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also criticised BJP MP's remarks, calling it an example of extreme arrogance and a grave insult to the deity. Kejriwal reiterated that calling God a devotee of Modi was inappropriate and offensive​
Subsequently, in response to the backlash, Patra, in a post on X, clarified his stance and asserted that it was a 'slip of the tongue' and urged not to blow the issue out of proportion. He acknowledged the mistake in his social media post, explaining that he intended to convey that Modi is a devotee of Lord Jagannath and inadvertently reversed the statement​.
Patra wrote, "Naveen Ji Namaskar! I gave number of bytes today to multiple media channels after the massive success of Shri Narendra Modiji&rsquo;s Road Show in Puri today, everywhere I mentioned that Modi ji is an ardent &ldquo;Bhakt&rdquo; of Shri Jagannath Mahaprabhu ..by mistake during one of the bytes I pronounced just the opposite ..I know you too know and understand this ..Sir let&rsquo;s not make an issue out of a nonexistent issue ..we all have &ldquo;slip of tongue sometimes.."

The Naveen Patnaik-led BJD has urged the poll body to take prompt action to ensure a free, fair, transparent, and healthy election in Odisha.

The BJD on Monday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC), alleging that certain leaders and candidates of Odisha BJP are exploiting the poll panel's name and intimidating state government officials on election duty with transfers if they do not support saffron party nominees in the polls.
Six IPS and two IAS officers from Odisha were recently transferred by the EC. According to Sasmit Patra, BJD's general secretary and national spokesperson, Odisha BJP candidates and leaders are leveraging these transfers as a means to threaten government officials involved in election duties.
Patra claimed that BJP leaders are warning officials that their failure to support the Odisha BJP would result in their transfers through false complaints to the EC, a practice that violates the Model Code of Conduct and constitutes criminal behaviour by attempting to influence the election process.
"This conduct not only undermines our democratic process and the integrity of our electoral system but also tarnishes the reputation of the EC," Patra emphasised.
The BJD leader criticised such practices as detrimental to democracy and the electoral process. Moreover, he accused BJP leaders of misusing the EC's name for their political ends.
The BJD urged the Commission to take prompt action to ensure a free, fair, transparent, and healthy election in Odisha.
In a separate petition to Odisha's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), the BJD alleged that BJP leaders were employing underage children in election campaigning in Jatani assembly segment, Khurda district, despite the adverse weather conditions.
They provided photo and video evidence to support their claim and requested immediate action.
On the other hand, a delegation of Odisha BJP, led by former president Samir Mohanty, lodged complaints of poll code violations by a senior IPS officer working in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
Mohanty accused the IPS officer of partisan behaviour, making calls to IICs, SPs, and political leaders, which he deemed a violation of MCC.
The BJP demanded action against the officer, including the seizure of his mobile phone for examination of call details, with the results made public for transparency.

V K Pandian, the former aide to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, has been appointed Chairman 5T (Transformational Initiatives) with the rank of a cabinet minister, an official notification said on Tuesday.
The development comes less than 24 hours after Pandian took voluntary retirement from government service.
&ldquo;Shri V K Pandian is hereby appointed as Chairman 5T (Transformational Initiatives) and Nabin Odisha in the rank of Cabinet Minister. Pandian shall work directly under the Chief Minister,&rdquo; the General Administration and Public Grievance Department said.
Pandian joined the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) in 2011, and since then, he has been Patnaik's private secretary.
After Patnaik became the chief minister for the fifth time in 2019, Pandian was given the additional responsibility of '5T secretary' to implement some transformational initiatives in government departments.

Asked whether any discussion on forming a &lsquo;third front&rsquo; is on the cards with the West Bengal chief minister, the BJD president told reporters: &ldquo;Nothing has been discussed as yet.&rdquo; The TMC has decided to maintain distance from both the BJP and the Congress and Banerjee last week held a meeting with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav in Kolkata.
The SP is also following a policy of maintaining equidistance from the two major political camps.
The TMC supremo reached Odisha on Tuesday evening on a three-day visit during which she will also offer puja at the Jagannath temple in Puri.
