Infosys co-founder while addressing a special event, 'Achievements in Food Security: India's Strides Towards Sustainable Development Goals', said that he &ldquo;experienced hunger" for 120 hours non-stop when he was hitchhiking in Europe 50 years ago. He said, &ldquo;Most of you have not experienced hunger. I have."
&ldquo;I experienced hunger for 120 hours non-stop when I was hitchhiking in Europe and at a place called Nish, a border town between Bulgaria and what was then Yugoslavia and today Serbia," Narayana Murthy said.

The 'Achievements in Food Security: India's Strides Towards Sustainable Development Goals' was hosted by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN at the United Nations headquarters in New York which was attended by UN diplomats, officials, academia, civil society organisations and members of the Indian diaspora.

Akshaya Patra Foundation is a a non-profit trust located in Bengaluru about which Murthy said its success lies in bringing a smile to the faces of helpless people.
"Akshaya Patra is hugely successful by that count. If our poor children lose hope and faith in our society, they will turn to violence and destroy all the good that India has achieved and is hoping to achieve," he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;
At the event he also highlighted India's economic progress attributing it to the success of the government&rsquo;s economic policies, vision and the hard work of Indian entrepreneurs and citizens as well as the foreign direct investment from multinationals.
He also spoke about Government's Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) which is the world's largest food security programme. PMGKAY benefits over 800 million people.
"Akshaya Patra is a proud addition and a proud partner of this fantastic initiative of the Government of India," the Infosys co-founder said. &ldquo;Poverty is not unique to India. It is there in every society. Akshaya Patra makes the future of India safe by bringing inclusivity to the country's growth and making the poor people enthusiastic partners in our quest towards prosperity," the billionaire entrepreneur observed.

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy has opposed freebies and has called for an alternative approach. Narayana Murthy said, "nothing should be given free". He further suggested that people availing government services and subsidies should be made to contribute back to the betterment of society.
"When you provide those services, when you provide those subsidies, there must be something in return that they're willing to do. For example, if you say -- I will give you free electricity, then it would have been a very nice thing for the government to have said, but we want to see the percentage attendance in primary schools and middle schools go up by 20%, then only we will give you that," Narayana Murthy said

Talking at the 26th edition of Bengaluru Tech Summit 2023 on Wednesday, Murthy batted for compassionate capitalism and regarded it as the only solution for a poor country like India to become prosperous.
After expressing his idea, Narayana Murthy also made it clear that he is not against freebies while stressing on the importance of these subsidies for the poor and underprivileged. &nbsp;
"I am not against free services being provided. I fully understand, as I also came from a poor background once upon a time. But I think we should expect something in return from those people who received those free subsidies to take a slightly bigger responsibility towards making their future generation, their own children and grandchildren, better in terms of going to school, you know, performing better. That's what I mean," he added.
<h3>Narayana Murthy on Tax</h3>
He also expressed his views on India levying higher taxes on its citizens. Murthy said that in a developing country like India it is obvious to have higher taxation compared to developed countries.
"In order to create efficient, corruption-free and effective public goods in our country, the taxation will have to be obviously higher than what you see in developed countries. So, I personally would not at all grudge, if I have to pay a higher level of taxation," he said.&nbsp;
Explaining the higher taxation need on the basis of per capita GDP, Murthy pointed out that with $2,300 per capita GDP India has twice that of what is called "low income countries" by the United Nations and other bodies. However, he pointed out that India is still behind middle income country where the per capita GDP is somewhere between USD 6,000 to about 12,000 to 15,000.
He also went on to explain about his transformation from a leftist to a "determined compassionate capitalist". He said that compassionate capitalism is the only solution for a poor country like India to become prosperous and not socialism and communism.

While talking about the New Education Policy (NEP) that was introduced by the Modi government, he said that steps should be taken to accelerate its outcome. He further suggested that the country has to invite 10,000 retired highly accomplished teachers from the developed world and from India in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas to create 2,500 &ldquo;Train the Teacher&rdquo; colleges.

As per Murthy each set of 4 trainers can train 100 primary and 100 secondary school teachers a year.&nbsp;
"One possible way of accelerating NEP&rsquo;s outcome is to invite 10,000 retired highly accomplished teachers from the developed world and from India in STEM areas to create 2,500 &ldquo;Train the Teacher&rdquo; colleges in our 28 states and 8 union territories. The training programme should be year-long", Murthy said.
The Infosys founder also mentioned that these trained teachers can become trainers over a period of 5 years.
"We will be able to train 250,000 primary school teachers and 250,000 secondary school teachers every year by this method. These trained Indian teachers can themselves become trainers over a period of 5 years", Murthy said
As India will have to spend only $20,000 in 20 years, it will not be a big financial burden for the country with its aim to achieve $5 trillion GDP soon.&nbsp;

Narayana Murthy further emphasised on showing respect and paying the teacher community better salaries. He also added that India must aspire for Stage 4 in innovation and invention. Stage 4 pushes countries to be inventors of of new processes, products, and services, mirroring the success of countries such as the US, most EU nations, Japan, and Australia.
Murthy also explained the different stages of innovation and invention.
Stage 1:&nbsp;A nation generally does not innovate or invent in stage one.&nbsp;

Citing an example of traffic rule violation in the national capital, Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy on Tuesday said that he feels uncomfortable coming to Delhi because it is the one city where indiscipline is the highest.
While speaking at the All India Management Association (AIMA) Foundation Day, Murthy shared that people should treat community property better than personal property as one of the values to avoid issues of dishonesty in public governance.
"I really feel very uncomfortable coming to Delhi, this is one city where indiscipline is the highest. Let me give you an example. I came yesterday from the Airport. At a red signal, there were so many cars, motorbikes and scooters, you know, violating the red light without a single care.
"If we can't even wait a minute or two, just to move forward. Do you think those people will wait if there is money? Of course they won't wait," Murthy said.
He said while emphasising on the creation of right value in the corporate world.
"We should start teaching our children to demonstrate these things in small areas, in areas where there is small returns, to get used to following the right path... Then you will gradually improve towards resisting temptation, where there are big returns," Murthy said.
The Infosys founder said that he learnt first lesson of corporate governance from his teacher.
"You should treat the community property better than your personal property. All the issues of dishonesty in the public governance system come because they don't follow this principle," Murthy said.
When asked about the kind of personality he should be known for, Murthy said that he would like to be known as a fair person instead of a nice person in the Indian parlance.
"I don't want to be known as a nice person in the Indian parlance. In India, if you are a nice person, what it means is that even if somebody is stealing something, you keep quite and smile. I will stand up and comment respectfully, if it is not proper. However, I want to be known as a fair person. The good thing about fairness in a transaction is that if a party loses the other party loses, that party would leave the table saying that if I had better data, if I had done the right thing, this man would have supported me," he said.
Murthy said that he doesn't hate a person, but the act.
"I want to be known as here lies a person who tried his best to be fair," he said.
Talking about the future of technology with tools like ChatGPT in place, Murthy said that science is about revealing nature while technology is about using the power of science to make life of human beings more comfortable, improve productivity, reduce cost, solve problems etc.
"Artificial intelligence has made our lives more comfortable by becoming assistive technologies. I think there is a mistaken belief that artificial intelligence will replace human beings. Human beings will not allow artificial intelligence to replace it because human beings have the power of mind. No computer, as we know, can equal the mind of a child. Even though such experiments have been conducted many times," Murthy said.
He said the human mind is always a step ahead and becomes the monster of that technology.&nbsp;

"We are proud of him and wish him success," Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy said in his first comments on the elevation of his son-in-law Rishi Sunak as Britain's prime minister.
Sunak, 42, on Sunday won the race to lead the Conservative Party and is now set to become Britain's first prime minister of Indian origin.

The son of a pharmacist mother and doctor father, Sunak was educated at one of England's most renowned schools, Winchester, and then Oxford. He spent three years at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and later gained an MBA from Stanford in California, where he met his wife Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy.
He married Akshata in 2009 and the couple has two daughters, Krishna and Anoushka.

N R Narayana Murthy, co-founder of IT giant Infosys, has lamented that economic activities in India were "stalled" and decisions were not taken by the Manmohan Singh government in time in the Congress-led UPA-era.
During his interaction with young entrepreneurs and students at the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIMA) on Friday, Murthy expressed confidence that young minds can make India a worthy competitor of China, the world's second largest economy.
"I used to be on the board of HSBC in London (between 2008 and 2012). In the first few years, when China was mentioned two to three times in the boardroom (during meetings), India's name would be mentioned once," said the well-known businessman in response to a question on where he sees India in the future.
"But unfortunately, I don't know what happened (to India) afterwards. (Former PM) Manmohan Singh was an extraordinary individual and I have tremendous respect for him. But, somehow, India stalled (during UPA-era). Decisions were not taken and everything was delayed," said Murthy.
The IT czar said when he left HSBC (in 2012), India's name hardly found a mention during meetings, while China's name was taken nearly 30 times.
"So, I think it is your (young generation) responsibility to make people mention India's name whenever they mention any other country's name, particularly China. I think you people can do that," said Murthy.
The former Infosys chairman said there was a time when most Westerners looked down upon India, but today, there is a certain level of respect for the country, which has now become the world's fifth largest economy.
According to him, the economic reforms of 1991, when Manmohan Singh was the finance minister, and the present Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government's schemes like 'Make In India' and 'Startup India' have helped the country gain ground.
"When I was of your age, there was not much responsibility because not much was expected from neither me nor India. Today, there is an expectation that you will take the country forward. I think you people can make India a worthy competitor of China," said Murthy.
The software industry veteran said China has left behind India by a huge margin in just 44 years.
"China is unbelievable. It (Chinese economy) is six times larger than India. In 44 years, between 1978 and 2022, China has left India behind so much. Six times is not a joke. If you make things happen, India will get similar respect to what China is getting today," said Murthy.

"I used to be on the board of HSBC in London (between 2008 and 2012). In the first few years, when China was mentioned two to three times in the boardroom (during meetings), India's name would be mentioned once," said the well-known businessman in response to a question on where he sees India in the future.
"But unfortunately, I don't know what happened (to India) afterwards. (Former PM) Manmohan Singh was an extraordinary individual and I have tremendous respect for him. But, somehow, India stalled (during UPA-era). Decisions were not taken and everything was delayed," said Murthy.
The IT czar said when he left HSBC (in 2012), India's name hardly found a mention during meetings, while China's name was taken nearly 30 times.
"So, I think it is your (young generation) responsibility to make people mention India's name whenever they mention any other country's name, particularly China. I think you people can do that," said Murthy.
The former Infosys chairman said there was a time when most Westerners looked down upon India, but today, there is a certain level of respect for the country, which has now become the world's fifth largest economy.

According to him, the economic reforms of 1991, when Manmohan Singh was the finance minister, and the present Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government's schemes like 'Make In India' and 'Startup India' have helped the country gain ground.
"When I was of your age, there was not much responsibility because not much was expected from neither me nor India. Today, there is an expectation that you will take the country forward. I think you people can make India a worthy competitor of China," said Murthy.
The software industry veteran said China has left behind India by a huge margin in just 44 years.
"China is unbelievable. It (Chinese economy) is six times larger than India. In 44 years, between 1978 and 2022, China has left India behind so much. Six times is not a joke. If you make things happen, India will get similar respect to what China is getting today," said Murthy.
