The Election Commission of India on Saturday announced by-elections to three seats in West Bengal including Bhabanipur Constituency. The by-polls will also be conducted in Samserganj and Jangipur. The by-polls to the three seats will be conducted on September 30 and the results will be declared on October 3.
Mamata Banerjee needs to win the by-poll to get elected as MLA and continue to be the Chief Minister. Mamata is expected to file nominations from Bhabanipur in Kolkata which was vacated by TMC candidate Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay after the poll results.
Mamata had given up her stronghold of Bhabanipur to contest from Nandigram and lost her seat to BJP&rsquo;s Suvendu Adhikari with a narrow margin in the state assembly polls.
The announcement comes as the TMC had gone to EC thrice to conduct the by-polls. TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh said they have &lsquo;placed arguments favouring election now, as Covid-19 has decreased.
According to an Election Commission press note, the West Bengal chief secretary has informed that in view of administrative exigencies and public interest and to avoid a vacuum in the state, bye-elections may be conducted.
The EC has also announced that Covid-19 guidelines have to be strictly followed. It has banned roadshows and no bike rallies are allowed. In an indoor campaign setup, only 30 percent capacity or 200 people, whichever is less, will be allowed.

Trinamool Congress MLA from Bhabanipur, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay&nbsp;resigned from his seat on Friday, to make way for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's re-election to the West Bengal Assembly.
Mamata Banerjee had lost the recently-concluded&nbsp;West Bengal Assembly election from the Nandigram Assembly&nbsp;seat by a narrow margin to former aide-turned BJP&nbsp;leader&nbsp;Suvendhu Adhikari. Even as her party swept the polls by winning 213 out of 292 seats in the assembly, Mamata Banerjee lost by a mere margin of 1956 votes.

All 10,620 booths where polling is being held this phase have been declared as sensitive by the Election Commission, which has deployed around 651 companies of central forces to provide security.
A total 199 companies of Central Armed Police Force have been deployed in Purba Medinipur, 210 companies in Paschim Medinipur, 170 in South 24 Parganas and 72 in Bankura.
TMC and BJP are contesting in all the 30 seats, while CPI(M) is in the fray in 15 and its alliance partners of Sanjukta Morcha, the Congress and ISF, are competing in 13 and two seats respectively.
