Police successfully concluded a nearly three-hour-long dramatic hostage situation, safely rescuing 17 children and two adults held at a studio in the Powai area by a person who died from a bullet injury sustained during police action.
The tense drama unfolded around 1:30 pm after the Powai police station received an alert that a person, identified as Rohit Arya (50), had taken 17 children hostage inside R A Studio in the Mahavir Classic building. The children, boys and girls between the ages of 10 to 12, had been called to the studio for an audition for a web series that had been ongoing for two days.
This may be the first of its kind situation in recent years in which a large number of children were held hostage, a police official said. In the last decade or so, the financial capital has witnessed multiple hostage-taking scenarios.
In March 2010, a retired customs officer, Harish Marolia, had taken a 14-year-old girl hostage in suburban Andheri (West). The 60-year-old had held the girl, Himani, captive in his flat. Marolia had taken the step after an altercation with members of the housing society where the two resided, the official recalled. Minutes before taking the girl hostage, Marolia had objected to construction work on one of the floors in his building. He had also threatened the housing society&rsquo;s secretary by firing in the air. The hostage drama came to a violent end when Marolia killed the teenager and he himself was subsequently shot dead by police.
In November 2008, a 25-year-old gunman from Bihar, Rahul Raj, held commuters in a double-decker civic-run bus hostage during the vehicle&rsquo;s journey from Andheri. As the bus reached Bail Bazar in Kurla, nearly 100 policemen surrounded the bus. When police asked Raj to surrender, he threw a currency note at them on which he had written that he had come to &ldquo;kill&rdquo; Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray, whose party had launched an anti-migrant agitation in Mumbai targeting North Indians. Police shot dead the 25-year-old, bringing a bloody end to the crisis.
&ldquo;In hostage situations, the most important thing is to save the life and ensure minimum damage. Negotiations are done keeping these two objectives in mind,&rdquo; Shailni Sharma, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Nagpur, explained while talking to PTI over the phone.
Sharma was the first woman officer of the Mumbai police, who was sent for training to London for handling hostage situations after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. She was also called to train National Security Guard (NSG) commandos in 2022 in successfully handling hostage scenarios.
&ldquo;When there is no headway in negotiations (with the hostage-taker), the operation team takes decisions as per the need of the time," Sharma said. In the 2010 Andheri hostage incident, Sharma was called to negotiate with Marolia, but by then, a police team had barged inside the flat where he had taken the girl captive and opened fire at her.
In 2013 and 2017, the police officer saved two women, who were trying to end their lives, by talking and convincing them not to take the extreme step. During anti-CAA and NRC protests in Mumbai, Sharma was posted as senior police inspector in Nagpada and handled the agitations through talks.

Initially, police did not mention that there had been a firing during the operation.
Police received a call at about 1.45 pm about a man holding children hostage inside R A Studio in Mahavir Classic building, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Datta Nalawade.
Powai police officials along with a Quick Response Team (QRT), Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad and a fire brigade team reached the spot, he said.
Before the rescue, Arya released a video on social media, saying he wanted to speak to a few people and ask them questions, and he did not want money. If he was not allowed to do so, he would set fire to the studio, he threatened.
Police tried to negotiate with him, but as the talks made no headway, a police team entered the studio through the bathroom, DCP Nalawade said.
Seventeen children, a senior citizen and another man were rescued, he added. ''It was a challenging operation, because we were negotiating with him without any positive outcome....To save the children's lives was our priority,'' Nalawade said.
When asked by reporters about the incident in Amravati, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the home portfolio, said details will be shared soon.

An accident involving overcrowded local trains in Maharashtra&rsquo;s Thane district sparked concerns about passenger safety. Commuters hanging on footboards collided as trains passed, prompting an official inquiry.

At least four passengers were killed and six injured after falling off a moving and overcrowded local train in Maharashtra's Thane district on Monday morning, police said.
The incident occurred between Diva and Kopar railway stations when the train was going towards Kasara, a police official said.
The incident occurred probably after commuters hanging from the footboard of two overcrowded trains and their backpacks brushed against each other as the trains passed in opposite directions, railway officials said without confirming the number of fatalities.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed sorrow over the incident and assured that all necessary steps were being taken to support the victims and their families.
An inquiry has been initiated by the Railways into the accident, a statement from the deputy CM's office said.
A police official said that as there was a huge rush during the peak hour, many people were standing at the doors of the train.
While the train was in motion, at least 10 passengers fell down, the official said.
The guard of a train going towards Kasara alerted the railway authorities about the incident, he said.
All the passengers who fell were rushed to a civic-run hospital in Kalwa. Four of them were declared dead on arrival, the official said.
The deceased were in the age group of 30 to 35 years, he said.
The Central Railway's chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila told reporters that eight passengers were found on the railway tracks.
The guard of a Kasara-bound fast local train reported the incident to their control room at around 9.30 am. All the injured persons were rushed to hospital in ambulances by 9.50 am, the official said.
Nila said an injured person informed that commuters fell from local trains travelling in opposite directions after some of those standing on the footboards collided against each other.
He refuted reports that the passengers fell from the Lucknow-bound Pushpak Express which left from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai at around 8.30 am.
Deputy CM Shinde said he was deeply saddened by the incident.
"Thousands of passengers travel on this route every morning. This is a very sad incident. I share the grief of families of the deceased," a statement from Shinde's office quoted him as saying.
The administration has swiftly mobilised medical response units to attend to the injured. Hospitals in Thane and Kalwa have been instructed to provide urgent and comprehensive treatment, the statement said.
"An inquiry has been initiated by the Railways into this accident. This is a very unfortunate incident and the exact cause of the accident will be revealed soon through this inquiry," it said.
Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena Lok Sabha member from Thane, Naresh Mhaske demanded a probe into the death of passengers.
"The cause of the incident needs to be addressed. How did they fall...was there a crowd, were they pushed, was there a fight," he told a regional news channel.
Mhaske said, "One can understand if it was a crowded local train. But in this case, the tragedy happened in a moving express train. The administration also needs to be alert." Leader of Opposition in the state legislative council Ambadas Danve in a post on X said the incident of so many people suddenly getting out of the Pushpak Express and resulting in the accident is heartbreaking and serious.

The dance musical by The Dragon Rose Project, staged as part of Aditya Birla Group's Aadyam Theatre, will follow the story of Dev, a young dancer from a coastal village in Maharashtra, who arrives in Mumbai with little more than his mother's dream and a burning passion to make it big.
As Dev auditions for 'Mumbai Star' dance competition, what unfolds is a transformative journey through ambition and heartbreak, the glitter of fame and its shadows - and a powerful relationship with a mentor who becomes his moral compass.
The show will feature a 19-track original score - eight songs and 11 instrumental pieces - that merge dance anthems, romantic ballads, kathak-influenced dance pieces, and the flavour of rap/hip-hop. The songs have been written by Ishitta Arun and composed by Dhruv Ghanekar.
While the studio version features celebrated artists like Sunidhi Chauhan, Nakash Aziz, Kunal Ganjawala, Ravi Chary, and Stony Psyko, on stage, the songs are performed by dancers and ensemble, including Avenav Mukherjee, Abhishek Choksi, Arushi Nigam, and Jayesh Sarange.
Originally written and conceptualised by Devika Shahani's The Dragon Rose Project for the Tokyo-based Min-On Concert Association, the script has been re-imagined by Akarsh Khurana and Arghya Lahiri.
"Mumbai Star is very close to my heart. It is a universal story about one of the most important relationships of our lives-the guru and shishya. The seed of this subject germinated from my determination to present the dynamic between mentor and disciple through music and dance. Aadyam is taking a new and bold step in this different storytelling form. I am grateful to be able to tell this story, my third production with Aadyam, and an ode to my mentor on this beautiful stage," Shahani said in a statement.
The dance musical has been directed by Nadir Khan and choreographed by Avantika Bahl while seasoned actors Rajit Kapur and Srishti Shrivastava narrate and guide the story.
"'Mumbai Star', celebrates dance -- both modern and traditional -- and dancers themselves, as individuals and a collective. All while rooting itself in a compelling theatrical narrative that weaves different styles of storytelling together - music, movement and theatre.
"We are very hopeful that with this small step, the dance industry will have one more avenue that will allow it to continue to innovate, grow and contribute to the rich and diverse landscape of the performing arts we love so much,&rdquo; Khan said.

Krishna Lalchand Chourasia (40), resident of flat no 401, was arrested on late Tuesday night under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) besides the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, said senior inspector Ganesh Nhayade of Kolsewadi police station.
"He carried out flooring work illegally without taking permission from the authorities," the official said, adding that further probe was underway.
The remaining building will be demolished as it was no longer safe for inhabitation, said Kalyan sub-divisional officer Vishwas Gujar.
The 30-year-old building is located in a densely populated locality in Kalyan East. It was not on the list of buildings declared as dangerous for living, officials said

"I will try to give effective police service to all Mumbaikars. We will like to reach the last man standing on the ground in terms of providing police service and security net. Wherever there are gaps, we will try to fill them with the help of technology," he maintained.
Bharti was serving as the Mumbai police special commissioner, a post created by the first Mahayuti government in 2023, before his elevation as the city's top cop.
While the state home department issued an order concerning Bharti&rsquo;s appointment, it has downgraded the post to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), an official said.
The coveted post of Mumbai police commissioner has traditionally been of the ADGP rank, but it had been upgraded to the DG (Director General) rank in a few recent postings.
During his three decades-long career, Bharti has served in various capacities in Maharashtra and at the Centre. He served the 50,000-strong police force in the metropolis in various roles, including as joint commissioner of police (law and order), additional commissioner of police (crime), and deputy commissioner of police (crime).
He has also headed the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), besides serving as the inspector general of police (law and order ) in the Maharashtra police headquarters.
Known for his investigative skills, Bharti has been a part of many high-profile cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in which 166 people were killed, the 2011 murder of journalist J Dey and the Farid Tanasha case.
He is credited with cracking down on homegrown terrorist organization Indian Mujahideen, which was responsible for a string of bomb blasts in the country, including in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
The senior IPS officer is also adept at tackling cyber and financial crimes.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that the first World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) will take place in Mumbai from May 1 to 4.
The chief minister said Mumbai will be the permanent venue for the yearly summit, which will boost the "creative economy", the fastest-growing in terms of wealth and job creation.
He said 5,000 delegates from 100 countries are expected to attend the summit.
Fadnavis said the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) will come up on land in Film City, and the Centre and state government have inked a memorandum of understanding for this project.
He said that a 240-acre plot belonging to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in Malad can be used for film production and post-production activities, he said.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier said WAVES will focus on nurturing creative talent through 31 &ldquo;Create in India&rdquo; challenges, which have already shortlisted over 400 creators across fields such as gaming, music, comics, animation, visual effects and broadcasting.
The goal is to help these creators transform their ideas into market-ready products while protecting their intellectual property rights.
More than 725 creators are expected to be showcased at the summit.

`MUMBAI 1', a single card for public transportation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will be launched soon, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said here.
Speaking at a press conference with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, he said the single card can be used for travelling by Metro, Mono Rail, suburban local trains and public transport buses.
"The architecture of the card will be ready in a month," Fadnavis added.
Vaishnaw said railway works of Rs 1,73,804 crore are underway in Maharashtra, and new works worth Rs 23,778 crore have been sanctioned this year.
As many as 238 new air conditioned trains have been sanctioned for the Mumbai suburban network and their manufacturing will start soon, the railway minister said.
Further, Rs 17,000 crore-worth projects are underway in the city, and this will transform the railway network in the country's financial capital, Vaishnaw added.
The Gondia-Ballarshah railway line in eastern Maharashtra has been approved and it will boost connectivity between Vidarbha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh and Telangana, CM Fadnavis said, adding the share of the Union government in the project will be of Rs 4,019 crore.
The `Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Circuit Train Line which will take tourists through areas where forts belonging to the era of the founder of the Maratha state are located will be launched, Fadnavis announced on this occasion.

The passengers were stuck at the Diyarbakir Airport in Turkey after their Mumbai-bound aircraft from London was diverted to the airport on Wednesday.
In a statement on Friday, a Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said the passengers were provided with overnight hotel accommodation on Thursday evening.
"With all necessary technical approvals now secured, the plane departed Diyarbakır Airport at 13:00 local time on Friday 4th April, operating as flight VS1358. Customers are now en route to Mumbai, with an expected arrival at approximately 20:49 local time," the spokesperson said.
A passenger, who was among those stranded at the airport, told PTI on Thursday that all passengers were sitting on the floor, and there were no blankets available.
Also, there was no vegetarian food available, the passenger said on condition of anonymity.
Over 250 passengers are stuck at the airport. An A350-1000 aircraft was operating the flight that has over 300 seats, according to sources.
"We're sorry that Virgin Atlantic flight VS358 from London Heathrow to Mumbai on 2nd April was disrupted following an urgent medical diversion to Diyarbakır Airport in Turkey.
"Due to the nature of the landing, the aircraft required extensive technical inspection before the aircraft was cleared to operate. The safety and security of our customers and crew remains our highest priority, and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and prolonged delay," the spokesperson said in the statement on Friday.

Udmale has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing hurt, insulting the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation, an official added.
