While he retired from international cricket nearly five years ago, Dhoni continues to feature in the Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings despite a nagging knee injury.
Dhoni stood in for regular CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad for the majority of this year's IPL after the latter suffered an elbow injury, and led their faltering and imbalanced side with resilience to notch up a few impressive victories towards the end of the season.
The knee injury aside, the years that have passed by have also taken some sting away from Dhoni's aggressive batting.
Dhoni batted as low as at No.8 in a few games but despite the fading powers, the superstar continues to draw full-houses during two months of IPL wherever he plays across the country.
Each of CSK's five title wins in the IPL have come under Dhoni and the franchise continues to expect their 'Thala' to return once again for the 2026 edition.
Dhoni, however, made no such promise.
"It depends. Again, I would say the same thing (that) I have four-five months to decide, there's no hurry to decide what needs to be done," Dhoni said.
"Every year, it's 15 per cent more effort to keep the body fit &mdash; not to forget this is top-level cricket.
"It's professional cricket, you have to be at your best and it's not always performance that you can count, because if cricketers start retiring because of performance then a few of them will retire when they're 22." For now, he is enjoying his time away from spotlight in Ranchi, his hometown.
"What is important to see is how much hunger you have, what kind of fitness you have, and how much you can contribute to the team, and whether the team needs you or not," he had said.

Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed a trademark application for the phrase 'CAPTAIN COOL', a sobriquet widely associated with his calm on-field demeanour.
According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, the application's status is 'accepted and advertised'. It was published in the official trademark journal on June 16. The application was filed on June 5, 2023.
The proposed trademark is registered under the category for sports training, providing sports training facilities, sports coaching and services.
No comments could immediately be obtained from Dhoni.
Interestingly, another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd, had earlier filed a similar application for the phrase. However, that application's status is showing as 'rectification filed'.
Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC's Hall of Fame for the year 2025 along with seven cricketers, including Australian great Matthew Hayden and South Africa's Hashim Amla. The ICC hailed Dhoni as a player who excelled not just in numbers but also in "extraordinary consistency, fitness and longevity".
"Celebrated for his calm under pressure and unmatched tactical nous, but also a trailblazer in the shorter formats, MS Dhoni's legacy as one of the game's greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers has been honoured with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame," the ICC statement had said.
Commenting on the application, Nilanshu Shekhar, founding partner at law firm KAnalysis, said that from the date of publication -- June 16, 2025, in this case -- a four-month window is provided during which anyone who believes the new trademark may infringe upon his or her rights can file an opposition.
"Essentially, this gives others a fair chance to raise any objections before the trademark is finally registered. If no opposition is raised by October 15, 2025, the trademark will move forward to registration," he said.
Shekhar added that if someone files an opposition, it becomes a legal dispute and the applicant has to respond.
"A decision is then made by the Trademark Office. This process ensures that trademarks are granted fairly and do not interfere with existing rights," he added.
In India, the process of registering a trademark starts when an application is filed with the Trademark Office. First, the application is checked for proper format and then examined on its merits. This means the examiner reviews whether the mark is clear, distinctive, and not too similar to existing marks.
If the examiner finds any issues, the applicant is invited to explain or fix them and once these concerns are resolved, the trademark is accepted and published in the official Trade Marks Journal, which is like a public notice, he explained.

Dhoni, who led India to the T20 World Cup win in 2007, the ODI World Cup victory in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013, said in a statement shared by the governing body that, "It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world." "To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever.&rdquo; Dhoni played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is for India and remains one of the greatest captains to have led the country. In 60 Tests that Dhoni captained the side, India won 27 games, lost 15 and drew 18.

"I have always felt growing up with a pet, whether it is a cat or a dog... I prefer dogs though. They have unconditional love towards you. I have said this in a previous interview, even if I lose a game and come back, my dog greets me the same way." He has been a much admired leader at CSK and Dhoni said that "we need to earn that respect of the people you're leading".
"You cannot command or demand respect. You need to earn it. I may have a position in an institution, and yes, that position needs to be respected. But me as an individual sitting on the chair, I need to earn that respect.
"I cannot just say 'respect me'! If you have the respect of the people around you, they give 10 to 15 percent more.

Though he hasn't made it official, this season of the IPL was being labelled as Dhoni's last but fans are still hopeful of him playing 1 more season after CSK failed to make it to playoffs this time.
Reportedly, Dhoni played through continuous leg pain during IPL 2024, leading to him frequently batting in the lower order despite his high strike rate of over 200 runs.
As per a Times of India report, a source has disclosed that Dhoni has not informed anything in regards to his retirement plans to the CSK management. The source also disclosed that Dhoni informed the management that he would take the final call about his IPL future in the next couple of months.
The report indicates that Dhoni might also delay his decision depending on BCCI's position on the impact sub rule. The regulation will enable Dhoni to act as an additional batsman in the final two overs, during which he will not have to cover much ground on the field.
Other outside influences may affect Dhoni's choice. An upcoming mega auction for the next IPL season will require teams to retain a specific number of players, forcing CSK to make difficult decisions.
