Two men, who recently returned to Kerala from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), tested positive for the disease, she said.
One of the men from Wayanad district was initially found to be infected, and the second person, from Kannur, tested positive later, according to her statement.
Following the reports of the disease, the Health Department has directed those who came in contact with the patients to monitor for any symptoms and report them accordingly.
Kerala had reported a few cases of monkeypox in September this year, following the global outbreak of the disease.

The announcement came just a week after the WHO said that Covid also no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.

The World Health Organization declared that mpox no longer constitutes a global health emergency on Thursday, almost exactly a year after the disease formerly known as monkeypox started spreading across the world.
Following falling cases numbers, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told an online press conference he was "pleased to declare" that he had accepted the advice of the UN agency's emergency committee on mpox to lift its highest level of alarm.
The announcement came just a week after the WHO said that Covid also no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
"While the emergencies of mpox and Covid-19 are both over, the threat of resurgent waves remains for both. Both viruses continue to circulate and both continue to kill," Tedros said.
"Mpox continues to pose significant public health challenges that needs a robust, proactive and sustainable response," he added, calling on countries to remain vigilant.
Though long present in parts of Central and West Africa, in May last year cases of mpox started emerging in Europe, North America then elsewhere, mostly among men who have sex with men.
The WHO declared mpox was a PHEIC in July. But the number of people infected with the disease -- which causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions -- has consistently fallen since.
More than 87,000 cases and 140 deaths have been reported from 111 countries during the global outbreak, according to a WHO count.
But almost 90 percent fewer cases were recorded over the last three months compared to the previous three-month period, Tedros said.
"While we welcome the downward trend of Mpox cases globally, the virus continues to affect communities in all regions, including in Africa, where transmission is still not well understood," he said.
After the status was lifted for Covid and mpox, there is now just one WHO-declared PHEIC -- for poliovirus, which was declared in May 2014.

Scientists have found evidence to show that the monkeypox virus can spread from an infected person up to four days before they even start exhibiting symptoms of the disease, a new study has claimed.

Scientists have found evidence to show that the monkeypox virus can spread from an infected person up to four days before they even start exhibiting symptoms of the disease, a new study has claimed.
The researchers behind the study estimated that 53 per cent of the transmission of monkeypox occurred in this pre-symptomatic phase, meaning that many infections cannot be prevented by asking individuals to isolate after they notice their symptoms.
According to them, if these findings published in the British Medical Journal are supported by other studies, pre-symptomatic transmission "would have important implications for infection control globally".
While previous research on pox viruses did not rule out transmission prior to symptoms, this work represents the first evidence to support this. To explore this further, researchers at the United Kingdom Health Security Agency set out to analyse the transmission dynamics of the monkeypox outbreak in the country, the study said.
The two main measures of interest to the researchers were serial interval &ndash; the time from symptom onset in the primary case patient to symptom onset in the secondary contact &ndash; and incubation period &ndash; the time from exposure to onset of symptoms.
The mean incubation period was estimated to be 7.6 days in one model and 7.8 days in the other model, while the estimated mean serial interval was eight days in one model and 9.5 days in the other.

For both models, the median serial interval was between 0.3 and 1.7 days shorter than the median incubation period, indicating that considerable transmission is occurring before the appearance or detection of symptoms.
Their findings are based on routine surveillance and contact-tracing data for 2,746 individuals who tested positive for the monkeypox virus in the UK between May 6 and August 1, 2022. Their average age was 38 years and 95 per cent of them reported being gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men, the study mentioned.
To estimate the above values, the scientists linked information on exposure and symptom onset dates from these individuals to their contacts through contact-tracing case questionnaires, which they then analysed using two statistical models.
The models were adjusted for several biases common to virus outbreaks, such as changes in infection rates over time, that would otherwise affect the results.
Analysis of individual-level patient data, collected from a subset of patients with more detailed information, seemed to confirm this explanation, with 10 out of 13 case-contact patient pairs reporting pre-symptomatic transmission. Four days was the maximum time that transmission was detected before symptoms appeared.
Based on these results, the researchers say an isolation period of 16 to 23 days would be required to detect 95 per cent of people with a potential infection.
These are observational findings, and the researchers point to several limitations, such as relying on contact tracing to identify the correct case-contact pairs and the self-reported data on the date of symptom onset. Further, the results may not necessarily be directly applicable to other populations with different transmission patterns.
Nevertheless, this was a large study using robust methods and adjusting for key biases that are present in the data, providing greater confidence in the conclusions.
These findings have important implications for isolation and contact-tracing policies, the researchers said, adding that backward contact-tracing strategies (tracing from whom disease spreads) should account for a pre-symptomatic infectious period when trying to find the contacts of confirmed cases.
In a linked editorial, researchers based in the US, UK, and Nigeria argued that pre-exposure vaccination and vaccine equity are urgently needed worldwide.
Vaccination is likely to be more cost-effective than managing the consequences of preventable infections, including hospital admissions, loss of income during isolation, and long-term complications, they explained.

However, they pointed out that many of the public health measures that have been critical during monkeypox outbreaks in high-income countries remain unavailable in much of Africa.
"As the monkeypox outbreak declines in Europe and North America, we have a responsibility to deploy effective tools for viral control on a global level &ndash; not just in wealthy nations," the researchers said. "These tools include research into understanding transmission dynamics in African settings and the inclusion of endemic countries in vaccine trials." Although case numbers are now declining, it is still important to understand the "transmission dynamics" of the virus &ndash; for example, how it spreads from one person to another and how quickly symptoms appear &ndash; to help inform policy decisions and future interventions.
Since the international outbreak of monkeypox in May 2022, more than 70,000 cases have been recorded globally, with just over 3,500 cases in the UK.

A 22-year-old man who died in Thrissur on Saturday had tested positive for monkeypox in the United Arab Emirates before returning to India, Kerala health minister Veena George said on Sunday, adding that a probe has been ordered into his death. 
The minister said that the family of the Gulf returnee only handed over the positive monkeypox test after his test. 
This could be India's first monkeypox death and fourth outside Africa. 
The state govt will be able to confirm the infection only after getting tests results from the National Institute of Virology. 
The man had returned to India on July 22 and was admitted to a hospital on July 27 after he developed fever. 
Kerala Health Minister said that the government will probe how the man managed to suppress information about his positive test at the airport. She also said that they have already started quarantining his close contacts. 
George said that the patient was young, did not suffer from any other illness or health problems and therefore, the health department was looking into the cause of his death.
She said they will also be examining why there was delay in his hospitalisation after he arrived here from UAE on July 21.
"This particular variant of monkeypox is not as highly virulent or contagious like COVID-19, but it does spread. Comparatively, the mortality rate of this variant is low. Therefore, we will examine why the 22-year-old man died in this particular case as he had no other illness or health problems," the minister told media.

Fifth case of Monkeypox reported from Kerala

Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday said the man had arrived at the Calicut Airport on July 27 and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the Malappuram district.

The second confirmed case of the infection was reported in Kannur district on July 18 and the third case was reported in neighbouring Malappuram on July 22.
All those who tested positive for the disease had arrived in Kerala from abroad.

With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and the subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, Monkeypox has emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health.&nbsp;

Wu’s suggestions were ridiculed by many Chinese internet users, with some saying that they found them “racist and discriminatory”.
“How racist is this? What about the ones like me who have been living in China for almost 10 years and we haven’t seen our families in like 3-4 years due to the borders being closed,” an user wrote on Weibo in response to a Global Times post about Wu’s recommendations.
Another Weibo user said she found Wu’s description “very inappropriate”.
“There are still so many foreign friends working in China. At the beginning of the epidemic, some foreign friends stood up and used social platforms to tell everyone that ‘Chinese people are not viruses’,” she said.
The user further wrote that Chinese people should not now remain silent when many foreigners are facing discrimination in the country, the Post reported.
Another Weibo user wrote, “Is he (Wu) referring to a sexual relationship or just skin-to-skin contact? I guess he meant the former. But it is inevitable to have handshakes when you meet foreign guests. It’s also hard to avoid skin contact on the bus.”

The World Health Organisation on Thursday reported a decline in monkey pox cases by 21% globally in the last week. The dropped percentage  suggests a reverse in month-long trend of rising infections. 
Signalling a possible decline of the outbreak in Europe, the UN health body  reported 5,907 new weekly cases and said two countries, Iran and Indonesia, reported their first cases. 
The health agency, however, warned against a "continuing steep rise" in Americas. It stated, "Cases in the Americas accounted for 60% of cases in the past month, while cases in Europe comprised about 38%."
British health authorities said last week  that there were “early signs” the country's monkeypox outbreak was slowing.
The UK's Health Security Agency downgraded the country's monkeypox outbreak last month, saying there was no evidence the once rare disease was spreading beyond men who were gay, bisexual or had sex with other men.
In early July, just weeks before the agency declared the international spread of the disease to be a global emergency, WHO's Europe director said countries in the region were responsible for 90% of all laboratory confirmed cases of monkeypox.
To date, more than 45,000 cases have been reported in 98 countries since late April.
Since monkeypox outbreaks in Europe and North America were identified in May, WHO and other health agencies have noted that its spread was almost exclusively in men who have sex with men.
Monkeypox has been endemic in parts of Africa for decades and experts suspect the outbreaks in Europe and North America were triggered after the disease started spreading via sex at two raves in Spain and Belgium.

Eight cases of monkeypox have been reported so far in India and a national task force has been set up to monitor the development of diagnostics and vaccines, Health Minister Mansukh Madaviya said on Tuesday.
Replying to queries in Rajya Sabha during Question Hour, he informed the members about the various steps being taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and to develop testing kits and vaccines.
Till date eight cases of the disease have been detected in India, out of which five have foreign travel history, the Minister of Health and Family Welfare said.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has successfully isolated the monkeypox virus and an expression of interest has been floated for research institutions, vaccine and diagnostic kits manufacturers in India to take the virus strain for further research to develop a vaccine in the country, he added.
The minister was replying to a supplementary question.
In a written reply to a question on measures and preventive action initiated by the government, the minister said, "A national task force on monkeypox disease has been constituted to monitor the development of diagnostics and vaccines for the management of monkeypox disease." Airport and port health officers have been instructed to remain vigilant and undertake rigorous health screening of incoming international passengers.
The minister said the National Institute of Virology, Pune under ICMR has been designated as a referral laboratory for testing suspected cases. In addition, 15 other ICMR-VRDL (Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory) network laboratories have been optimised to undertake diagnostic testing for monkeypox disease.
He said central teams have been deployed, on the detection of confirmed cases, to the affected districts to assist in control and containment efforts by state authorities.
In response to another supplementary question, Mandaviya said the government has relied on the experience of tackling COVID-19, to be alert and prepared in advance to prevent the spread of any disease.
He said when the disease was first reported globally in May, India had already started preparing to tackle it.
While the first case in India was reported from Kerala on July 14, the minister said much before that on May 1, 2022 the Centre had given guidelines to all states, and not just for international airports, on surveillance mechanism and contact tracing, how to collect samples from suspected cases and sending it to recognised laboratories for testing.
With the disease spreading only through close and deep contacts, he said no specific community is at risk and the government has taken up steps to create awareness about common symptoms, reporting of suspected cases and prevention from the disease.
Mandaviya said WHO has reported 18,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox globally from 78 countries and five deaths till July 27, 2022.

The minister said the National Institute of Virology, Pune under ICMR has been designated as a referral laboratory for testing suspected cases. In addition, 15 other ICMR-VRDL (Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory) network laboratories have been optimised to undertake diagnostic testing for monkeypox disease.
He said central teams have been deployed, on the detection of confirmed cases, to the affected districts to assist in control and containment efforts by state authorities.
In response to another supplementary question, Mandaviya said the government has relied on the experience of tackling COVID-19, to be alert and prepared in advance to prevent the spread of any disease.
He said when the disease was first reported globally in May, India had already started preparing to tackle it.
While the first case in India was reported from Kerala on July 14, the minister said much before that on May 1, 2022 the Centre had given guidelines to all states, and not just for international airports, on surveillance mechanism and contact tracing, how to collect samples from suspected cases and sending it to recognised laboratories for testing.
With the disease spreading only through close and deep contacts, he said no specific community is at risk and the government has taken up steps to create awareness about common symptoms, reporting of suspected cases and prevention from the disease.
Mandaviya said WHO has reported 18,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox globally from 78 countries and five deaths till July 27, 2022.&nbsp;

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis that gets transmitted to humans from animals and has symptoms similar to those seen in smallpox patients, albeit clinically less severe.&nbsp;

The national capital has reported one confirmed case of monkeypox, taking the total number of such patients in the country to four.
Till now, 14 contacts of Delhi&rsquo;s first <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/world-health-organisation-declares-monkeypox-global-public-health-emergency-1658599207679" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">monkeypox </a>patient have been identified and none of them has shown symptoms, sources said, adding one of the contacts had complained of body ache but he is doing fine now and has no symptoms.
Another suspected case has been admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in Delhi and the samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
Officials, however, said there is no need to panic. One has to stay in isolation for 21 days from the last contact with a monkeypox patient or their contaminated materials, they said.

Because of the recent developments, the Centre issued guidelines for monkeypox management. The Delhi government has directed its hospitals and 11 revenue districts to follow the guidelines.
The Centre's guidelines state that health workers who have unprotected exposure to monkeypox patients or possibly contaminated materials need not be excluded from duty if asymptomatic but should undergo surveillance for symptoms for 21 days.
The infected person should wear a triple-ply mask while the skin lesions should be covered to the best extent possible to minimise the risk of contact with others, according to the guidelines.
It stated that patients should remain in isolation until all lesions have healed and the scabs completely fallen off.
Explaining the process of identifying a contact, an official said a person who comes in contact with an infected person through face-to-face exposure, direct physical contact, or comes in contact with contaminated materials such as clothing or bedding is identified as a primary contact.
"District surveillance teams ask contacts to self-monitor their symptoms and stay in touch with them. Preferably, the contacts should isolate themselves in separate rooms but they can also stay in the same room. They should ideally wear a mask and follow hand hygiene and social distancing norms," an official said.
The official also said the asymptomatic contacts should not donate blood, cells, tissues, organs or semen while under surveillance.

The symptoms include lesions, which usually begin within one to three days of the onset of fever, last for around two to four weeks and are often described as painful until the healing phase when they turn itchy.
In May this year, multiple cases of monkeypox were identified in several non-endemic countries. Globally, over 16,000 cases of monkeypox have now been reported from 75 countries and there have been five deaths so far due to the outbreak. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared monkeypox a global public health emergency of international concern.&nbsp;
