In a statement on Friday, the UN health agency said it has also renamed two families, or clades, of the virus, using Roman numerals instead of geographic areas, to avoid stigmatisation. The version of the disease formerly known as the Congo Basin will now be known as Clade one or I and the West Africa clade will be known as Clade two or II.
WHO said the decision was made following a meeting of scientists this week and in line with current best practices for naming diseases, which aims to "avoid causing offence to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups, and minimise any negative impact on trade, travel, tourism or animal welfare".
Numerous other diseases, including Japanese encephalitis, Marburg virus, Spanish influenza and Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome have been named after the geographic areas where they first arose or were identified. WHO has not publicly suggested changing any of those names.
Monkeypox was first named in 1958 when research monkeys in Denmark were observed to have a "pox-like" disease, although they are not thought to be the animal reservoir.
WHO said it was also opening a way for the public to suggest new names for monkeypox, but did not say when any new name would be announced.
To date, there have been more than 31,000 cases of monkeypox identified globally since May, with the majority of those beyond Africa. Monkeypox has been endemic in parts of central and west Africa for decades and was not known to trigger large outbreaks beyond the continent until May.
WHO declared the global spread of monkeypox to be an international emergency in July and the US declared its own epidemic to be a national emergency earlier this month.
Outside of Africa, 98 percent of cases are in men who have sex with men. With only a limited global supply of vaccines, authorities are racing to stop monkeypox before it becomes entrenched as a new disease.

With the health situation as 'top priority' for Delhi government, at least 70 isolation rooms have been set up across 6 hospitals to tackle rising monkey pox cases at a time when the national capital has recorded its third case.
Of the 70 isolation wards, the Delhi government has set up 20 rooms at LNJP Hospital which is the nodal centre for treatement of confirmed and suspected monkey pox cases. Remaining 50 wards have been placed at government-run GTB Hospital, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital and 3 private ones.
Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia also assured that the government  has made all the arrangements to fight back and was geared up to fight even a potential monkeypox outbreak in the city, if needed.

Serum Institute of India (SII) is in talks with Danish firm Bavarian Nordic to import a small batch of vaccines to deal with monkeypox cases in the country, company CEO Adar Poonawalla said on Tuesday.
In case of a collaboration it could take two to three months to import the vaccine into the country, Poonawalla said in an interview to news channel NDTV.
With only a handful cases of monkeypox in the country at the moment, he said for initiating local development of the vaccine SII would have to wait and watch for a few months to assess the real demand scenario.
India has reported four cases monkeypox, including three in Kerala, so far.
"I am ready to do that immediately as a security to our nation. As soon as we can have some sort of commercial tie up to import it and based on availability from Bavarian Nordic, we are hoping to do so," Poonawalla said when asked how soon SII could import the monkeypox vaccine into the country.
Danish firm Bavarian Nordic has already developed a vaccine against monkeypox and is available in different markets under brand names Jynneos, Imvamune or Imvanex.
Poonawalla further said: "My team is talking to them right now. For larger volumes we take a call based on true demand and necessity." SII is ready to import some batches on its own cost initially, he said but added the government would have to decide how to go about for larger volumes.
"There are a handful of cases and so there is no need for knee jerk reaction and order million of dosages and do all of that..we need to watch closely over the next few months...have collaborated very well with the government earlier and we need to have that close coordination even now," he added.
Poonawalla noted that even if they started the process now for manufacturing the vaccine locally, it would probably take a year before they come out with a market ready product.
"To make it from scratch is difficult as it would take time and investment.. not sure if we will be able to do it..it would have to be with someone else..," Poonawalla said.
"As a manufacturer, we really need to see if there is a demand or in 4-5 months it is going to fizzle out and treatments that are there are going to take care of the disease like this so we will have to wait and watch," he added.
On the other hand, the company can bring in bulk supplies of the vaccine which would be adequate for monkeypox as it is not going to be a global pandemic, he noted.
"You don't need to vaccinate the entire population..in certain regions where spread is there you would like to vaccinate over there..and we are talking about importing some vaccine doses as finished product just over the next few months as abundant precaution if the country needs it..," Poonawalla said.
He said there was no need to panic due to the detection of a few cases as the disease has been there for decades.

Ghebreyesus said a month ago, he had convened the Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations to assess whether the multi-country monkeypox outbreak represented a public health emergency of international concern.
At the time, 3,040 cases of monkeypox had been reported to the WHO from 47 countries.
“Since then, the outbreak has continued to grow, and there are now more than 16,000 reported cases from 75 countries and territories, and five deaths reported,” he said, adding that in light of the evolving outbreak, the committee was reconvened on Thursday to review the latest data and advise me accordingly.
Although monkeypox has been established in parts of central and west Africa for decades, it was not known to spark large outbreaks beyond the continent or to spread widely among people until May, when authorities detected dozens of epidemics in Europe, North America and elsewhere.
Initial symptoms of monkeypox typically include a high fever, swollen lymph nodes and a blistery, chickenpox-like rash or lesions - often on the mouth or genitals in the recent cases. Infections are usually mild.
The monkeypox virus can spread through contact with body fluids, sores or items such as clothing and bedding contaminated with the virus. It can also spread from person to person through respiratory droplets, typically in a close setting, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Ghebreyesus said though he is declaring a public health emergency of international concern, “for the moment this is an outbreak that is concentrated among men who have sex with men, especially those with multiple sexual partners.” “That means that this is an outbreak that can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups. It’s therefore essential that all countries work closely with communities of men who have sex with men, to design and deliver effective information and services, and to adopt measures that protect the health, human rights and dignity of affected communities,” the WHO chief said.
He underlined that stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus.
“In addition to our recommendations to countries, I am also calling on civil society organisations, including those with experience in working with people living with HIV, to work with us on fighting stigma and discrimination. But with the tools we have right now, we can stop the transmission and bring this outbreak under control,” he explained.
Ghebreyesus said under the International Health Regulations, he is required to consider five elements in deciding whether an outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.
“WHO’s assessment is that the risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region where we assess the risk as high. There is also a clear risk of further international spread, although the risk of interference with international traffic remains low for the moment,” the WHO chief added.

The Russian Defence Ministry on Friday called on the World Health Organization to investigate the activity of US-funded biolabs in Nigeria amid the growing monkeypox outbreak.
The chief of Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Force, Igor Kirillov, claimed Washington controlled at least four laboratories in Nigeria.
"Amid numerous cases of US violations of biosecurity requirements and facts of careless storage of pathogenic biomaterials, we call on the WHO leadership to investigate the activities of US-funded Nigerian laboratories," he added.

The Russian Defence Ministry on Friday called on the World Health Organization to investigate the activity of US-funded biolabs in Nigeria amid the growing monkeypox outbreak.
The chief of Russian Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Force, Igor Kirillov, claimed Washington controlled at least four laboratories in Nigeria.
"Amid numerous cases of US violations of biosecurity requirements and facts of careless storage of pathogenic biomaterials, we call on the WHO leadership to investigate the activities of US-funded Nigerian laboratories," he added.
Monkeypox is endemic in Nigeria, but cases have been detected in non-endemic nations in North America and Europe in recent weeks. The Defence Ministry also shared footage of heavy artillery in action during Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.
The Malka self-propelled howitzers were used to eliminate protected command posts, mortars, armoured vehicles and manpower of the enemy, the ministry reported.
