Mohammed Siraj's double strike added to South Africa's woes as India tightened their grip on the opening Test, reducing the visitors to 154 for eight at tea on day one at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday.
Having conceded 34 runs in his first six overs, Siraj toiled relentlessly and finally cracked open the lower middle order with a brilliant double-wicket burst in his 10th over, removing Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen in the space of four balls.
Verreynne (16), who was dropped twice in the 34th over, was undone when the ball struck his pad and then bat as he tried to defend towards mid-off. South Africa reviewed for the third time in the innings and burned their final referral.
Jansen (0) received a short ball first up, but Siraj then produced a length delivery that began reversing before pitching around off, darted back sharply and went through his gate.
At the stroke of tea, Axar Patel opened his account by trapping Corbin Bosch (3) leg before wicket as India suddenly looked poised to bat on the opening day itself despite Shubman Gill losing yet another toss.
The session had begun with Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah continuing from where they had left off. The left-arm spinner continuing to ask tough questions with drift, dip and length variations, keeping the batters under constant scrutiny.
After the early losses of Temba Bavuma and the openers, Wiaan Mulder and Tony de Zorzi tried to steady the innings with circumspect batting.
Mulder applied himself for more than 50 balls, looked compact against India&rsquo;s four-pronged spin attack, but lost focus 15 minutes into the second session Attempting to break free with a reverse sweep against Kuldeep, he missed it completely and was trapped lbw.
India struck again in the third over after lunch as Bumrah, following a probing first spell of 7-4-9-2, returned to remove the in-form de Zorzi (24).
Earlier, in the morning session, Bumrah showcased his mastery with two unplayable deliveries to dismiss both thte openers, Aiden Markram (31) and Ryan Rickelton (23), after South Africa raced to 57 for no loss in 10 overs.
Kuldeep added the wicket of Bavuma (3) as India seized control before lunch and tightened the noose further by tea.

Siraj jumped 12 spots following his nine wickets in the match, including a five-for, as India defeated the hosts by six runs in a thriller to draw the series 2-2.
With England requiring 35 runs on the last day with four wickets in hand, a charged up Siraj, who was adjudged 'Player of the Match', accounted for three batters including the last dismissal of Gus Atkinson, to earn India a remarkable win.
Siraj's best ICC ranking so far had been a 16th position that he reached in January last year.
India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who played three Tests to manage his workload, continues to lead the charts with 889 points.
Prasidh Krishna also attained a career-best 59th position after he along with Siraj became only the second India pair to take four or more wickets each in both innings of a Test, a feat earlier accomplished by spinners Bishan Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna against Australia in Delhi in 1969.
India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to the top-5 in the Test batting rankings following his second century in the series at The Oval.
Jaiswal rose three spots and is on 792 points, while the only other India batter in the top-10 is Rishabh Pant, who has slipped one spot to eighth as he could not play the fifth Test due to a foot injury.
Charismatic England batter Joe Root has firmed up his position at the top with his third century in as many matches, while Harry Brook's 98-ball 111 has helped him claw back to second position.
In the bowling department, England fast bowlers Atkinson and Josh Tongue have also attained career-best positions after finishing with eight wickets each in the match. Atkinson is in the top-10 for the first time, while Tongue is up 14 places to 46th.

Sunil Gavaskar lauds Mohammed Siraj&rsquo;s performance against England, says playing for India should outweigh workload concerns and urges cricketers to take inspiration from soldiers and Rishabh Pant.

Mohammed Siraj has "debunked forever this business of workload", said India batting great Sunil Gavaskar, questioning the concept by asserting that playing for the country should be enough to "forget the aches", something that soldiers guarding the nation are doing routinely.
Siraj played all five Tests of the just-concluded drawn series against England and bowled 185.3 overs in total, picking up 23 wickets in all. However, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was available for only three of the games, skipping the must-win fifth Test at The Oval as part of his workload management.
Gavaskar, however, made it clear that his criticism was not directed at Bumrah, saying that his was a case of "injury management" more than anything else.
"When you are playing for your country, forget the aches and the pains. On the border, do you think that the jawans are complaining about cold? What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That is what you expect from the players. Playing cricket for India is an honour," Gavaskar told 'India Today'.
"You are representing 140 crore people and that is what we saw in Mohammed Siraj. I think Siraj bowled his heart out, and he debunked forever this business of workload.
"For five Test matches, non-stop he has bowled 7-8 over spells, because the captain wanted him and the country expected of him," added the former skipper.
The 76-year-old said workload management cannot come in the way of fielding the best available team.
"If you are going to succumb to people who are talking about workload, then you are never going to have your best players on the field for your country," he said.
"I hope that the word &lsquo;workload&rsquo; goes out of the Indian cricket dictionary. I've been saying that for a long time... And I think that is the one thing that we all should keep in mind that this workload is only a mental thing, not so much a physical thing," he added.

Set a record target of 374, England were placed at 339 for six when bad light and rain forced an early stumps on the fourth evening.
India picked up the remaining four wickets in quick time, as England's second innings ended at 367 in 85.1 overs.
Siraj and Prasidh Krishna (4/126) sizzled with the ball when their team needed them the most.
Siraj was elated after a big-hearted effort. "I always believe in myself, that I can pull off a win from any situation," he told the broadcaster.
Down with a shoulder injury and his left-arm in a sling, Chris Woakes came at number 11 and battled tremendous pain while he was in the middle.
England won the opener by five wickets at Leeds, but India came back strongly with their crushing 336-run victory in the second match at Birmingham, before the hosts regained their series lead by edging out the Shubman Gill-led visitors by 22 runs at Lord's.

India pacer Mohammed Siraj was on Monday penalised 15 per cent of his match fee and docked one demerit point following an aggressive reaction to the wicket of England opener Ben Ducket on day four of the third Test at Lord's.
Siraj, who has taken four wickets in the Test, was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the International Cricket Council's Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match".
Siraj gave Duckett a fiery send-off and brushed shoulders with the opener after dismissing him for 12 runs in England's second innings on Sunday.
England were all out for 192 in 62.1 overs. India, who ended the day at 58/4 on day 4, are 135 runs away from victory.
"Mohammed Siraj has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee after a breach in the ICC Code of Conduct during India's Test match against England at Lord's," said ICC in a statement.
"After the dismissal, Siraj celebrated close to the batter in his follow-through and made contact as Duckett began his walk back to the Lord's long room," the statement added.
"In addition to the fine, one demerit point has been added to Siraj's disciplinary record, for whom it was the second offence in a 24-month period, taking his tally to two demerit points." When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned.
Siraj then went on to dismiss top-order batter Ollie Pope for four, reducing the hosts to 42 for 2.
Siraj's fiery send-off was one of several such moments on day four of the Test when a total of 14 wickets fell.

India skipper Shubman Gill lauded fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj for stepping up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, crediting their combined 17-wicket haul for making his job as captain significantly "easier".
India registered a historic 336 run in the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham to level the five match series 1-1.
Akash Deep delivered a match-winning performance with a 10-wicket haul, including his maiden five-for in the second innings. Siraj also contributed with seven wickets across both innings.
"When your two fast bowlers take 17 wickets, then it becomes easy for the skipper. Bumrah bhai was not there but the bowlers we have in the squad are capable of taking 20 wickets in a match," Gill told former India batting star Cheteshwar Pujara on JioHotstar after the team's win.
Having been comprehensively beaten in the opening Test, Gill credited the turnaround to improved execution with the ball and sharper fielding.
"There have been a lot of instances where we have lost the first match of the series and then we had made comebacks. So we knew how to make comebacks. If we consistently score 450 runs, our bowlers will keep us in the game... All the things we spoke about after the last game, we were spot on with all of those things. I think the way we came back with our bowling and fielding was tremendous to see," Gill said at the post-match presentation.
India's dominant win was set up by Gill himself, who scored a stunning 269 in the first innings and followed it up with 161 in the second, laying the foundation for the massive 608-run target.
"On this kind of wicket, we knew that if we got 400&ndash;500 runs, it would be enough. Not every game will be like Headingley. They (bowlers) were magnificent. The way we were able to get through their top order, they bowled brilliantly."
Gill also praised Prasidh Krishna for maintaining pressure despite not having many wickets to show for his effort. Even Prasidh, he didn't get as many wickets but he bowled brilliantly.
"He (Akash Deep) hit the right lengths and was getting the ball to move both ways, which was difficult on a pitch like this. He was magnificent for us," Gill said.
He added that sometimes captaincy can cloud a batter's instinct to take risks, but he didn't let that affect him. "I am definitely feeling comfortable with my game and if we are able to win the series with my contributions, it'll be great. As I said before, I want to play as a batsman, and go out as a batsman and make decisions as a batsman. Sometimes you won't take some risks when you're thinking as a captain which you have to do as a batsman."
He once again stated that Bumrah will be back for the third Test at Lord's.
England skipper Ben Stokes rued the missed opportunities that allowed India to wrest control of the Test. "Having them at 200 for 5, we were really happy there and not being able to burst them open there and being 80 for 5, it's tough to be able to scrape it back from there."
He admitted the conditions began to favour India as the game wore on. "You look back at the start of the game, 200/5, if we were able to get some wickets quicker, things could have been a little different. As the game got deeper and deeper, it sort of turned into a wicket, probably suited India more than us to be honest."
"Being 80/5 in reply to India's big first innings total is obviously going to be tough from there. We ran in and tried everything, we changed plans and when a team is on top of you, obviously India is a class team. It's always very hard to wrestle back when the opposition is full of world-class performers."
He lavished praise on youngsters Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, who both scored centuries in the first essay.
"Jamie has been incredible since he came into the team, he has been exceptional with the bat and he goes massively into the radar with his wicket-keeping. Just shows that his natural game and the way him and Harry were able to wrestle the momentum back towards us, I thought it was a very, very special part of the game to watch from the dressing room," Gill concluded.

If Gill, with his magnificent batting (269 and 161) set it up, Akash deserves equal credit for his lion-hearted effort on a track which was primarily a bowler's graveyard.&nbsp;

The other star performer, Gill, pouched the catch at cover, leading to an animated celebration of his first success as Test captain. England also felt the pressure from Indian spinners duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who got the ball to drift and straighten.&nbsp;
After losing the series opener at Leeds from an &lsquo;unlosable&rsquo; position, Gill-led India made an admirable comeback at the back of the captain&rsquo;s record breaking 430 runs in the match and the showing of Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, who both got the new ball to talk on a flat surface.&nbsp;
In Jasprit Bumrah&rsquo;s absence, not much was expected from the Indian pace attack but Siraj and Akash Deep changed the perception with match turning spells in either innings. The Edgbaston authorities had slashed the ticket prices for the final from a minimum of GBP 90 to 25.&nbsp;
For the first time in the game, the Indians outnumbered the England supporters and eventually got their money&rsquo;s worth The third Test begins at Lord&rsquo;s in four days&rsquo; time and India seem to have most bases covered with bowlers complementing the batters.&nbsp;

On a typical English weather day when heavy cloud cover and subsequent rain made way for bright sunshine, the start was delayed by one hour and 40 minutes. Prasidh Krishna opened the bowling alongside Akash Deep, who was the stand out bowler of the session.&nbsp;
For the first time in the high-scoring game, the wicket appeared to have deteriorated a bit with Akash getting a prodigious amount of seam movement. It was a tad surprising that Mohammed Siraj did not start alongside Akash. Having said that, Akash Deep needed seven balls to provide the breakthrough in the opening hour as Ollie Pope played one on to his stumps.&nbsp;
In the following over from Akash, the dangerous Harry Brook was trapped in front with a delivery that hit the crack and seamed back in sharply. Brook could not do much about that. It can be assumed that the medium pacer has sealed his place for the Lord&rsquo;s Test with a stellar use of the new ball at Edgbaston. Krishna from the other end could not strike but performed the holding role effectively.&nbsp;
Ravindra Jadeja was brought in after the first hour of and he got the ball to turn from the rough instantly, posing problems for Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith. Unlike Headingley, Jadeja tried to take some pace off his deliveries and it did turn off the rough. The England captain however was able to get some much needed runs.&nbsp;
He got four boundaries off Siraj including from a pull and extra cover drive off Siraj. Realising that there was little point in just defending, Stokes decided to sweep Jadeja.&nbsp;
Going into day five, either an India win or draw were probable results with England effectively conceding that there were not going to go for the mammoth target despite only drawing one game in the last three years.

He will be heading home to Sydney to recover but he is expected to return to India for the three-match ODI series at the end of March.
Warner had suffered a hairline fracture in his left elbow after receiving a blow courtesy of a&nbsp; Mohammed Siraj delivery during the first innings of the second Test in Delhi.
Warner had also been hit on the helmet a few overs later resulting in concussion symptoms due to which he had to be subbed out of the match.

Indian cricketers Shreyas Iyer and Mohammad Siraj have been included by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in the 2022 Men's ODI Team of the Year.

It proved to be a completely different track when India came out to bowl. Mohammed Siraj rattled the visitors with 4 wickets as Sri Lanka was bowled out for a mere 73, their 4th-lowest total in ODIs. While Sri Lanka last won an ODI series vs India way back in 1997, It was India's 10th series win vs Sri Lanka at home. Captain Virat Kohli is back and he will lead the team against South Africa in the series decider in Cape Town. Kohli confirmed to the media that he is fit and raring to go while accepting that missing out on a game feels guilty but after all he is human and injuries do tend to happen when you keep playing non-stop.
