US Democrats maintain Senate majority; Biden says 'I feel good'

One Senate race remains up in the air -- a runoff in Georgia set for December.

President Joe Biden's Democrats retained control of the US Senate on Saturday, a remarkable midterms election result that defied predictions of a Republican win over both houses of Congress.
Midterms traditionally deliver a rejection of the party in power, and with inflation surging and Biden's popularity in the doldrums, Republicans had been expecting to ride a mighty "red wave" and capture the Senate and the House of Representatives.
But the wave never got much beyond a ripple and on Saturday US networks called the key Senate race in Nevada for Democrat incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto, giving the party the 50 seats it needs for an effective majority.
The win clinches Democratic control in the Senate as Vice President Kamala Harris can cast the tie-breaking vote if the upper chamber is evenly split 50-50.
One Senate race remains up in the air -- a runoff in Georgia set for December.
The two parties had been neck-and-neck at 49 seats each after Democrat Mark Kelly was projected to win a tight Senate race in Arizona on Friday evening.
The result in the House of Representatives is also hanging in the balance, and while Republicans are slightly favored to take control, it would be with a far smaller majority than they had envisaged going into Tuesday's election.

23-year-old Muslim woman of Indian-origin elected to Illinois Assembly| US midterm polls

A Democrat, Syed beat her Republican challenger Chris Bos. She received 52.3% votes in the election for the 51st District in the Illinois State House of Representatives.

Nabeela Syed, the 23-year-old Indian origin Muslim woman in the United States has created history by winning the Illinois General Assembly in the US midterm polls.&nbsp;
With the win, Syed became the youngest member to get elected to the llinois General Assembly. A Democrat, Syed beat her Republican challenger Chris Bos. She received 52.3% votes in the election for the 51st District in the Illinois State House of Representatives.
Thrilled at her win, Syed took to Twitter and expressed her excitement saying, &ldquo;My name is Nabeela Syed. I am a 23-year-old Muslim, Indian-American woman. We just flipped a Republican-held suburban district.&rdquo;. "And in January, I'll be the youngest member of the Illinois General Assembly.&rdquo;, she added.
As per a report by The Quint, Syed was born in Illinois' Palatine and is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. She has a degree in political science and business.
The newly elected member of the House is said to be active in her religious community at the Islamic Society of Northwest Suburb.&nbsp;

US midterm polls: Shri Thanedar becomes 5th Indian-American to be elected to US House

He defeated a crowded field of Democrats running for the open seat, including state Rep. Adam Hollier, Portia Roberson, John Conyers III and Sherry Gay-Dagnogo.

Entrepreneur-turned-politician and Democrat Shri Thanedar became the fifth Indian-American to be elected to the US House of Representatives, and the first from the state of Michigan, pipping Republican candidate Martell Bivings.
Thanedar, 67, currently represents the third district in the Michigan House.
He won 84,096 votes, while Bivings received more than 27,366 votes.
He defeated a crowded field of Democrats running for the open seat, including state Rep. Adam Hollier, Portia Roberson, John Conyers III and Sherry Gay-Dagnogo.
He thus becomes the fifth Indian-American to be elected to the US House of Representatives.
The other four being Dr Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna and Pramila Jayapal, all of whom are expected to be re-elected for the next Congress.
In 2018, he made an unsuccessful bid for Michigan's governor position.
Thanedar's win is inspirational, as it represents a quintessential rags-to-riches story, having arrived in the US in the 70s with just USD 20.
After losing his father, Thanedar worked as a janitor to support his studies and family, before working as a scientist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai, India.
A proud Maharashtrian, Thanedar grew up in Belgaum in Karnataka.
He came to the US in hopes of becoming a successful businessman and now wants to serve the community he lives with.

&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve achieved the American dream. But what I noticed is that the American dream is not accessible to many people, especially in urban areas, in the black and brown communities. So, my motivation was to enter public service. I feel that I&rsquo;ve been blessed, I have done well for my family, and it&rsquo;s time for me to give back," he told PTI in an interview.
&ldquo;This country that I immigrated to has given me so much, and I felt that I cannot continue accumulating wealth. It is time for me to give up my business and enter public service so I can give back,&rdquo; he added.
Responding to a question on India-US relationship, Thanedar said America needs to have a strong relationship with other democratic countries.
&ldquo;We need to protect our democracy across the world, whether it is India, or whether it is Israel,&rdquo; he said.
Israel is also an ally of the US and that democracy is surrounded by a lot of adverse countries.
&ldquo;We need to protect democratic Israel, we need to protect democratic India, and we need to ensure that human rights are respected all across the world. And that will be my focus in terms of foreign relations,&rdquo; he added.
Thanedar has not been to India since the Covid-19 outbreak.
He has also written a book in Marathi, which has been a bestseller.

Voters in US will cast their ballot on November 8 for the crucial midterm election
The midterms take place two years after a presidential election, mid-way through a US president&rsquo;s four-year term
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives or the Lower House are on the ballot, as well as 35 Senate seats or the Upper House
Like the Indian Parliament, US Congress has 535 members
The Congress is divided into two chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
There are 100 members in the senate elected for a six-year term and every two years a third of the Senate is up for re-election.
Similarly, the House of Representatives has 435 members for a two-year term after which every seat is up for re-election.
A political party needs 51 seats to have control in the Senate, while 218 are required to achieve a majority in the House.
At stake in these elections is the control of the House of Representatives
Currently, the Democrats control both chambers, but by very slim majorities. The House is controlled by the Democrats with 221 seats and the Senate is equally split where the Republicans hold 50 seats, while Democrats hold 48. There are two independent Representatives who favour Biden. More than 42 million Americans have cast early ballots ahead of midterm elections as most of the 50 US states allow voters to cast ballots early

The President accused Trump's camp of being "determined to take this country backward" while "fanning the flames of political violence".
In response, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy accused Biden of trying to divide Americans.
Donald Trump is currently under suspicion of illegally taking documents from the White House and keeping them at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. His property was recently raided by the FBI.
