President Joe Biden gave away the medals to 19 people including civil rights icons such as the late Medgar Evers, prominent political leaders such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep.</p>

<p>The 10 men and nine women who were given the medals hailed from the worlds of politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights and LGBTQ advocacy, science and religion. Three medals were awarded posthumously.</p>

<p>Michelle Yeoh, who is the first Asian actress to win an Oscar, joined the International Olympic Committee after being voted in as a member at a ceremony in Mumbai.</p>
<p>She was among the eight new proposed members to join the Olympic body.</p>
<p>For the unversed, Yeoh is a former Malaysian junior squash champion.</p>
<p>She won the Oscar for best lead actress earlier this year for her role in the film, &lsquo;Everything Everywhere All at Once&rsquo;.</p>
<p>Michelle Yeoh got her big break in Hollywood after she was cast as the first ethnic Chinese Bond girl in 1997&rsquo;s &lsquo;Tomorrow Never Dies&rsquo; opposite Pierce Brosnan. She went on to star in martial arts movie &lsquo;Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon&rsquo;, the 2005 period drama &lsquo;Memoirs of a Geisha&rsquo; and the 2018 romantic comedy, &lsquo;Crazy Rich Asians&rsquo;.</p>
<p>Besides being an actor, Yeoh is also a producer and a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.</p>
<p>Michelle Yeoh is married to Jean Todt, the former head of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, the governing body for motorsport, which was recognised by the IOC in 2013.</p>
<p>Yeoh joins judoka Yael Arad, who won Israel&rsquo;s first Olympic medal, Hungarian businessman and sports administrator Balasz Furjes, Cecilia Roxana Tait Villacorta, a former Olympic volleyball medallist and politician from Peru, and German sports entrepreneur Michael Mronz as the five new individual members.</p>
<p>Furjes and Mronz have also led efforts to get the Olympics to Hungary and back to Germany respectively.</p>
<p>Sweden&rsquo;s Petra Soerling, head of the International Table Tennis Federation, and South Korean Kim Jae-youl, president of the International Skating Union, joined through their function as heads of an international federation.</p>
<p>Mehrez Boussayene, President of the Tunisian Olympic Committee, also joined.</p>

<p>Actor James Hong won an award at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night. His impassioned acceptance speech focused on advancing Asian representation in Hollywood.</p>
<p>Veteran actor&rsquo;s &lsquo;Everything Everywhere All at Once&rsquo; co-star Michelle Yeoh introduced the performer by stating that the 94-year-old had been acting &lsquo;since there were only 49 states,&rsquo; and it took nearly seven decades of work to get him to the SAG Awards stage.</p>
<p>As Hong accepted his trophy for Cast in a Motion Picture, he said &lsquo;I got my first SAG card 70 years ago. My first movie was with Clark Gable. Back in those days, I have to tell you this, the leading roles were played by these guys with their eyes taped up. And the producer said that Asians were not good enough, and they are not box office. But, look at us now, huh?&rsquo;</p>
<p>Hong then joked that Jamie Lee Curtis, who won the Female Actor in a Supporting Role award, was a welcome addition to the project's cast. &lsquo;We're not all Chinese. But, 'Jamie Lee' is a good Chinese name,&rsquo; he said.</p>

SAG-AFTRA, to get this from you, who understand what it is to get here, every one of you know the journey, the roller coaster ride, the ups and downs, but, most important, we never give up," she said, later adding: "This is not just for me; this is for every little girl that looks like me....
