HSPDP MLA Methodius Dkhar's office in Shillong was set on fire allegedly by members of his own party as he supported the NPP-BJP coalition, senior NPP leader Prestone Tynsong said on Saturday.
Dkhar along with party MLA Shakliar Warjri on Friday pledged support to the NPP-BJP alliance, which staked claim to form the next government in the state under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma.
Tynsong, the outgoing deputy chief minister, told PTI that angry supporters of Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) went to Dkhar's office in the Laitumkhrah area of the city on Friday night and set it on fire.
"Firefighters reached there on time and doused the flames," he said.
The HSPDP decided to form an alliance with the TMC and Congress, but its two MLAs went ahead and supported the NPP-BJP coalition.
Tynsong said that those indulging in such incidents must respect the people's mandate.
He blamed the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) for it.
"These people are trying to snatch the constitutional rights of the MLAs. We will not allow such activities to happen. This is against the rights of the people," he said.
Angry HSPDP supporters burnt effigies of the two MLAs in the Motphran area here on Saturday.
The gathering was attended by leaders of the HITO and the HYC who are demanding a chief minister from the Khasi community.&nbsp;

The ruling National People's Party (NPP) in Meghalaya emerged as the single-largest party in the state on Thursday, clinching 26 seats out of the 59 constituencies that went to polls on February 27, the Election Commission said.
However, it fell short of gaining a majority in the 60-member assembly, even as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad K Sangma sought the support of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in forming the new government.
The BJP, which had brought star campaigners, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief J P Nadda and Shah, managed to win only two seats.
The United Democratic Party (UDP), which was NPP&rsquo;s ally in the Sangma government, emerged the second-largest party, winning 11 constituencies. It had won only six seats in the 2018 polls.
The Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC won five seats each.
The newly formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) won four seats, while the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP), the People's Democratic Front won two seats each. Two Independent candidates also emerged victorious.
Sangma won from the South Tura seat by a margin of 5,016 votes, while his deputy Prestone Tynsong won the Pynursla seat by 8,140 votes, the EC data showed.

The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP are contesting the polls on a 40:20 seat-sharing basis. The Congress, which ruled the state till 2003 and does not have any member in the current House, has fielded 23 aspirants.
In Meghalaya, 369 candidates are in the fray on 59 seats, with 21.6 lakh eligible voters. Voting in Sohiong constituency was postponed due to death of a candidate.
Voting is underway at 3,419 polling stations, of which 640 have been categorised as &lsquo;vulnerable&rsquo; and 323 as &lsquo;critical&rsquo;, Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor said. Thirty-six of the 369 candidates are women, with the largest number of 10 women candidates being put up by the Congress.

Four Meghalaya MLAs, including two from the state's ruling National People's Party, joined the BJP on Wednesday as the party looks to expand its footprints in the north-eastern region ahead of assembly polls in the state.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is the party's pointsman for the region, said the joining of the four "experienced and respected" political figures will mark a "new beginning" for the BJP in the state, where it could win only two seats in the 60 member-assembly in the 2018 polls.
Though the state's ruling NPP has been a member of the BJP-led National Democratic Party, their relations have been far from smooth. The BJP's decision to induct two of its MLAs, Benedic Marak and Ferlin Sangma, into its fold underscores its determined push to corner the NPP and emerge as a strong force in the state ahead of the polls likely to be held in February.
The two other MLAs who joined the party at its headquarters here are Samuel M Sangma, an independent, and Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang, who is from the Trinamool Congress. It is a big boost to the party, Sarma said.

The sports department of Meghalaya has denied permission to the BJP to host an election rally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at P A Sangma Stadium in Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma&rsquo;s home constituency of South Tura, citing construction work at the venue.
The BJP, fuming over the development, alleged that the ruling National People&rsquo;s Party (NPP), along with the Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties, were trying to stall a &ldquo;wave of the saffron party&rdquo; in the state.
The PM was scheduled to participate in campaigning in Shillong and Tura on February 24.
&ldquo;The sports department has communicated that it will not be fit to host such a big gathering at the stadium as construction work is still going on and materials kept at the site may be of safety concerns. Therefore, an alternate venue at Alotgre cricket stadium is being considered,&rdquo; District Electoral Officer Swapnil Tembe told PTI.

Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People's Party president Conrad K Sangma on Saturday filed his nomination papers from South Tura assembly constituency in West Garo Hills district.
Sangma, who was accompanied by hundreds of NPP supporters to the office of the returning officer of the district, exuded confidence that his party will have the "single-largest majority" in the upcoming polls to the 60-member assembly.
He is seeking re-election from South Tura assembly seat in the February 27 elections.
&ldquo;The NPP will have the single-largest majority. We are confident and moving ahead with the development works undertaken in the last five years.
"The foundation has been laid in various sectors, and it is time to take things to the next level. The continuity is important so that we achieve goals that we have set,&rdquo; he told reporters.

BJP's northeast co-incharge Rituraj Sinha told reporters on Thursday that the party will fight the Meghalaya polls under the campaign tagline of "M-Power" (Modi power), asserting that people of the state have trust in PM Modi.

The BJP will contest on all 60 seats of the Meghalaya Assembly and fight the Nagaland elections in an alliance with the state's ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, contesting on 20 of 60 seats.
BJP secretary and its northeast co-incharge Rituraj Sinha told reporters on Thursday that the party will fight the Meghalaya polls under the campaign tagline of "M-Power" (Modi power), asserting that people of the state have trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They believe Modi is the only person who can ensure a corruption-free government and fast track development, he said.
Nagaland and Meghalaya BJP chief Temjen Imna Along and Ernest Mawrie, respectively also named party candidates approved by the party's central election committee.
Sinha claimed that people in the northeastern states are fed up of corruption and slow pace of development, even though central government schemes have reached them. They, though, believe that their implementation could have been better, he said.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma-led National People's Party is in power in Meghalaya. Though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a part of his government, the relations between the two parties have long been far from smooth. The BJP had contested on 47 seats in the 2018 assembly polls and had won two.

Sinha expressed confidence that the saffron party will do well in the state polls and noted that Modi has visited the northeast region over 50 times in his term. This is more than the visits of all the previous prime ministers put together, he said, adding that Modi has always been to the region with some development package.
The prime minister has converted the 'Look East' policy into 'act policy'. The central government has worked to execute the HIRA (highways, internet connectivity, roadways and airport) model in the region which has also witnessed an era of peace, Sinha said.
"In the true sense, Modi has married regional aspiration of the northeast with our national priorities," he said.
Nalin Kohli, BJP's in-charge for Nagaland, said, "We believe Modi's work, focus on development and peace are the critical factors which will drive Nagaland's voters." Both the states will go to polls on February 27 and counting of votes is due for March 2.

Meghalaya: cabinet minister, 4 MLAs resign ahead of 2023 assembly polls

"We have received the resignation letters of five MLAs. Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has received them in person," Assembly commissioner and secretary Andrew Simons told PTI.

Meghalaya PHE Minister Renikton Tongkhar and four other sitting MLAs of the state resigned from the Assembly on Wednesday.&nbsp;
Besides Tongkhar, those who resigned are Trinamool Congress MLA Shitlang Pale, suspended Congress MLAs Mayralborn Syiem and PT Sawkmie and Independent MLA Lambor Malngiang, he said.
The five are set to join the United Democratic Party (UDP), sources in the party claimed.
The Assembly currently has 42 members.
"We have received the resignation letters of five MLAs. Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has received them in person," Assembly commissioner and secretary Andrew Simons told PTI.
Lyngdoh is the president of the UDP, which is a key alliance of the Conrad Sangma government in the state.
Sangma, who is the National People's Party supremo, leads the ruling six-party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance. The BJP, which has two MLAs, is part of the MDA. The MDA government is the third coalition to last its full term in power in the state in over 50 years.&nbsp;

Violence had broken out at the border between the two states in the early hours of Tuesday after a truck allegedly laden with illegally felled timber was intercepted by forest guards from Assam. Six people, including five tribal villagers from Meghalaya a forest guard from Assam, were killed.
On Thursday, Shillong&rsquo;s street protests took on a violent turn as petrol bombs were hurled at a police bus and jeep, setting them on fire, while a traffic police kiosk was brought down. Stones and petrol bombs were hurled at police at Barik point, barely metres from the place where a candlelight vigil and sit-in protest was held by different organisations, including the Khasi Students Union, and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, officials said.
Different organisations in Meghalaya have announced a "non-cooperation movement" on Friday across the five hill districts.
Mobile internet services were suspended in these districts till Saturday morning to prevent the spread of fake news that could foment trouble, Home Secretary CVD Diengdoh said.
The Meghalaya government was arranging police protection for trucks transporting essential commodities and oil tankers that were coming from Assam, officials said on Thursday night.

Following the incident, the Assam police sounded an alert in all the districts bordering Meghalaya to thwart any possible law and order situation, another official said.

In a tweet tagging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam CM Himanta Sarma, Meghalaya&rsquo;s Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, whose party is an ally of the BJP, complained that the Assam police and forest guards &ldquo;entered Meghalaya and resorted to unprovoked firing&rdquo;.
Assam Police officials however said the truck was intercepted in West Karbi Anglong district of the state by a state Forest department team and a mob from the Meghalaya side had later attacked the team of forest guards and policemen from the state, which led firing by the Assamese side to control the situation.
Five of the six killed at &ldquo;Mukroh village in West Jai&ntilde;tia Hills District &hellip; were Meghalaya residents and one is from the Assam Forest Guard,&rdquo; Sangma said. The Assam police however placed the figure at 4, including a forest guard.
&ldquo;The Meghalaya Government strongly condemns the incident where the Assam Police &amp; Assam Forest Guards entered Meghalaya &amp; resorted to unprovoked firing. GoM will take all steps to ensure that justice is served &amp; action is taken against those responsible in this inhuman act,&rdquo; he said on the social media platform.
The Meghalaya chief minister also tweeted &ldquo;I also appeal to our citizens to maintain peace and harmony in the State. The State Government is taking all the necessary steps to ensure that law and order is maintained.&rdquo; The two states&rsquo; have a long disputed border. While talks have resolved part of the dispute, certain sections still remain properly un-demarcated.
West Karbi Anglong superintendent of police Imdad Ali told PTI that the Assam forest department team intercepted and stopped the truck at Mukru area within his district carrying the illegal timber towards West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya around 3 am.
As the truck tried to flee, the forest guards fired at it and deflated a tyre. The vehicle's driver and handyman and another person were then apprehended, though others managed to escape, he said.
Police reinforcements were rushed to the spot when the forest guards contacted Zirikending police station. After the police reached the spot, a large number of people from Meghalaya armed with 'daos' (daggers) and other weapons gathered at the spot around 5 am, the officer said.
The mob `gheraoed&rsquo; (surrounded) the forest guards and the police personnel demanding immediate release of those arrested and attacked them which prompted the police to resort to firing to bring the situation under control, Ali said.
"A forest home guard and three persons from the Khasi community of Meghalaya were killed in the incident. The situation is under control now," the SP said, adding that top officers of the district have rushed to the remote area.
It is not clear whether the casualties, including the forest guard named Bidyasing Lekhte, died of bullet injuries or from injuries inflicted by other weapons.

Sangma also announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 5 Lakh each for the next of kin the deceased individuals. &ldquo;The Cabinet will sit today to decide on the next course of action which the Government will take with regards to this incident,&rdquo; he tweeted.
He also announced that a meeting with Rangbah Shnongs (traditional heads) and religious leaders, members of civil society and NGOs is being called to discuss, inform and appeal for their support to stand together.
Meanwhile, a police official said in Guwahati that an alert has been sounded in all districts bordering Meghalaya and their police as been asked to remain vigilant.

Quashing a case against an accused minor, the Meghalaya High Court said that acts of mutual love and affection between a minor boy and girl can not be equated to &ldquo;sexual assault&rdquo; under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).
The court freed the accused minor from any liability in the criminal case while disposing a mutual plea filed by the accused minor and the mother of his girlfriend on Oct 27.
During the hearing the Court of Justice W Diengdoh observed that though consent of a minor is immaterial as far as prosecution for an alleged offence of sexual assault is concerned, &ldquo;...but considering the peculiar facts and circumstances of a particular case, such as in a case of a boyfriend and girlfriend particularly, if both of them are still very young, the term &lsquo;sexual assault&rsquo; as could be understood under the POCSO Act cannot be attributed to an act where, there is, as pointed above, mutual love and affection between them.&rdquo;,&nbsp; the Hindustan Times reported.&nbsp;
The matter came to light after the mother of the minor lodged a police complaint that her daughter was sexually assaulted by the boy on two occassions as a result the accused was arrested in put in jail for 10 months.&nbsp;
However, the girl during her deposition before a magistrate admitted that her relation with the accused was consensual.&nbsp;

A group of six prisoners escaped from the Jowai jail on September 10 after they overpowered the staff there, and five of them reached Shangpung village on Sunday, about 70 km away, a senior officer said.
Around 3 pm of Sunday, when one of the prisoners went to a tea shop to buy food, he was identified by the locals and the entire area was alerted, village headman R Rabon told PTI.
A large number of people turned up and chased the group of prisoners to a nearby forest. A purported video of the incident showed angry villagers, armed with sticks, apprehending the prisoners and beating them mercilessly.
Four prisoners died in the attack while one managed to escape, Rabon said.

Inspector-General of Prisons JK Marak said, "It is true that a group of villagers apprehended four of the escaped prisoners and subsequently lynched them. Our officers have reached the area and I am awaiting more information." Officials said that Ramesh Dkhar managed to escape from the mob, while the sixth prisoner was nowhere to be seen during the attack.
"Two prisoners were arrested in the murders of taxi drivers in August, police said.
Superintendent of Police of West Jai&ntilde;tia Hills BK Marak said police officers are at the spot and "conducting spot inquiry and other necessary formalities".
"A case has been registered in the Jowai police station against the prison staff and five of them have been arrested so far. Among the arrested prison staffers are one head warden and four wardens," he said.

Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik on Sunday alleged a business-politics nexus between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani. He attributed the issue of Minimum Support Price (MSP) not becoming a legal guarantee in the country to the alleged nexus.
The Indian Express quoted Malik as saying, "The MSP is not being implemented because Prime Minister has a friend whose name is Adani, who at the moment has become Asia&rsquo;s richest person in five years,&rdquo;
A video of Malik, who has been particularly vocal about the farmers' issue, making this statement has been doing the rounds on social media.&nbsp;
He was reportedly speaking at a programme held at a cow shelter in Haryana's Nuh district.

Citing an anecdote from Guwahati airport, the operations of which have been handed over to the Adani Group under the Centre's airport privatisation programme, Malik accused the government of 'preparing to sell the country' to corporates.
"At Guwahati airport, I met a woman holding a bouquet. When I asked her where she was from, she replied &lsquo;We have come on behalf of Adani&rsquo;. I asked what does that mean. She said this airport has been handed over to Adani&hellip; Adani has been given airports, ports, major schemes&hellip; aur ek tarah se desh ko bechne ki taiyari hai [and in a way, the preparation is to sell the country], but we will not let that happen,&rdquo; Malik was quoted in the daily's report.
In October 2021, the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati was handed over to the Adani Group for operations, management and development responsibilities.
This instance of Malik being critical of the Centre is not a one-off incident.
On January 3, 2022, speaking at a function, he alleged that PM Modi was arrogant when he met him to discuss the farmers&rsquo; protest. &nbsp;
Reiterating his experience on Sunday, he said, &ldquo;I saw that farmers were sitting on Delhi&rsquo;s borders&hellip;I told the PM that each man among them was the head of 40 villages&hellip;700 farmers died. When a dog dies, a condolence message from Delhi is sent. No condolence message was sent for farmers&hellip;&rdquo; &nbsp;
"I told him that it has been a year since they have been sitting, give them something and settle this. He told me that they will go and why was I concerned. He took it very lightly. I told him that you do not know them&hellip; Later, he understood and the laws were repealed and he apologised also.&rdquo; &nbsp;

Meghalaya BJP vice president Bernard N Marak arrested in a brothel case has been slapped with new charges under Explosive Substances Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Meghalaya Police on Thursday recovered explosive materials and arms including 35 gelatine sticks, 100 detonators , 4 crossbows and 15 arrows from the arrested BJP leader's farmhouse.
