As summer approaches and the weather changes, infections are on the rise. Recently, two children passed away in Madhya Pradesh. They were suspected to have measles. According to reports, many schools in the district have been shut due to the suspected infection.&nbsp;
Let us learn more about the symptoms and treatment of measles.
<h3>Symptoms&nbsp;</h3>
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the measles virus (MeV). It is characterized by a distinct red rash and flu-like symptoms. Some common symptoms are:
Fever
Measles often begins with a high fever, which can reach up to 104&deg;F (40&deg;C).
Cough
Those who have contracted the virus usually have a persistent cough. This is one of the earliest symptoms.
Runny Nose
Another sign of measles is blocked or runny nose.
Conjunctivitis
You may also develop red and watery eyes, also known as conjunctivitis.
Small white spots
Small white spots called Koplik's spots may appear inside the mouth, usually on the inner lining of the cheek. These are considered a diagnostic feature of measles.
<h3>Treatment for measles</h3>
There is no specific treatment for measles after the infection sets. Medicines usually treat the symptoms like fever and cough. People without immunity to measles, including infants, may be given the measles vaccine within 72 hours of exposure to the measles virus. If measles still develops, it has milder symptoms.
Many patients like pregnant women, infants, and the immunocompromised are given an injection of proteins (antibodies) called immune serum globulin.

Notably, around 25 lakh infants, who were supposed to have received the measles vaccine in 2021, did not receive it.

Measles outbreak: Union govt tells states to heighten surveillance, give pre-emptive care

Notably, around 25 lakh infants, who were supposed to have received the measles vaccine in 2021, did not receive it.

With a surge in measles cases in some states, the Union government told states to increase surveillance of fever and rash cases, according to a Hindustan Times report.
Over 900 cases of measles have been reported from Maharashtra and Kerala so far with Maharashtra recording 15 deaths.
The Central government also directed the states to conduct doorstep surveys in affected areas to identify vulnerable children and provide pre-emptive care.
Apart from Kerala and Maharashtra, a rise in number of measles cases has been reported from certain districts of Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana and Jharkhand.
Meanwhile, the Centre last week asked states to consider administering an additional dose of the vaccine to all children aged nine months to five years, in vulnerable areas.

What is measles and what are its symptoms&nbsp;
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, measles is an infection caused by a virus and affects mostly children. It is a contagious disease and can spread from one infected child to another. Its symptoms appear 10 to 14 days after coming in contact with the virus which are mostly high fever, cough, runny nose and conjunctivitis. Red flat rashes or spots on the face are also some of them.&nbsp;
<h3>Take these measures in case of measles&nbsp;</h3>
According to the National Health service (NHS UK), one can take these measures if a child is suffering from measles.&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Do not let another child come near an infected child</li>
<li>Feed the infected child/patient with plenty of water and liquids</li>
<li>Clean the infected person&rsquo;s body with wet cotton</li>
<li>Patient must take medicines prescribed by a doctor only</li>
<li>Cleanliness and hygiene must be taken care of</li>
<li>Care taker must wash hands thoroughly before and after attending the patient</li>
</ul>
<h3>Vaccine is the only way to prevent measles&nbsp;</h3>
Till now no medicine has been prepared for measles, so the only way to keep your child away from this disease is to get vaccinated. To protect children from measles, they are given 2 shots of measles vaccine.&nbsp;

In the wake of a rise in measles cases among children in Malappuram district, the Kerala government on Friday urged parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated without any fail.

In the wake of a rise in measles cases among children in Malappuram district, the Kerala government on Friday urged parents to ensure that their children are vaccinated without any fail.
Known as 'ancham pani' in local parlance, measles mainly affects children.
The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday had asked states to consider administering an additional dose of measles and rubella vaccines to all children aged nine months to five years in vulnerable areas.
Health Minister Veena George said the department is taking stringent measures for prevention of the disease and an Additional Director (public health) has already been sent to the district for coordinating preventive measures.
The health officials, including the Additional Director, would visit the site where the cases were reported, on Saturday and Sunday and would also oversee the preventive measures, she said in a statement.
Besides them, a representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) is also camped in the district for the mission, she detailed.
The Health Department is already implementing preventive measures with the participation of people's representatives, she said, adding that a special campaign would be launched to encourage vaccination.
"There is no need for any worry... Everyone should ensure that their children are vaccinated without any fail. Measles, Rubella or MR vaccine can prevent this disease. The MR vaccine is generally given to children under the age of five years," George said.
Adequate amounts of MR vaccine and Vitamin A syrup have been made available in the district, the minister said, adding that the vaccine is available free of cost in all government health centres.
Over 100 measles cases have been reportedly registered recently among various age groups, including toddlers, in the district.
A virus infection that mainly affects young children, measles is mostly seen among those belonging to the age group between six months to three years.
However, the disease affects teenagers and adults as well, the minister added.
Earlier this week, the Centre deployed high-level teams to Malappuram, Ranchi (Jharkhand), and Ahmedabad (Gujarat) to assess and manage increase in number of measles cases among children in these cities.&nbsp;
