Leaders after leaders from the BJP are raising the issue of Krishna Temple in Mathura ahead of the elections on Uttar Pradesh.
Days after UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya stirred the political cauldron by saying that the BJP was preparing to build a temple in Mathura, BJP MP Hema Malini on Sunday said she hoped that after Ayodhya and Kashi, her constituency Mathura will also get a grand temple.
“After the restoration of Ram Janmabhoomi and Kashi, naturally Mathura is also very important,” Hema Malini told reporters here on Sunday.
The BJP MP, who was in Mathura to participate in a programme, said that she is going to Kashi on Monday on an invitation.
“Being the MP of Mathura, which is the birthplace of Lord Krishan who is the symbol of love and affection, I will say that there should be a grand temple. A temple is already there and can be beautified like Modi ji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) developed Kashi Vishwanath corridor and the river Ganga can be seen directly from the temple,” she said.
“This change (renovation and redevelopment of Kashi Vishwanath) was very difficult. This shows his (Modi's) farsightedness. This will also happen in Mathura.”
Mathura is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Shri Krishna.
The supposed temple site, which is a subject of multiple lawsuits, is located inside an old mosque in Mathura and shares its premises with a prominent temple.

Appeasing Gods to win wars is a practice as old as time
Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Aztecs, Celts- societies, spread across the continents, over centuries have knocked on God’s door to ask for help, to get work done
And if the folktales, the stories and the rumours are to be believed, now and then Gods have answered the door for their favourites
This practice of divine appeasement, for some time now, has been the norm in Uttar Pradesh’s politics
For example, it is without contention, that a place like Ayodhya, the seat of spirituality on the banks of the Saryu river is talked about more for its political importance than theological reasons
Since the 1980s, Ayodhya has remained a pivot in UP politics and polls. For the BJP, since its resolution in 1989 to construct a Ram Mandir at the site of Babri Masjid, Ayodhya remained the focal point of its poll campaigns in the years after the Babri Masjid demolition. It slipped into a footnote in the late 2000s as the law of diminishing returns kicked in
 
But with the Supreme Court ruling in favour of the Ram Mandir in November 2019, Ayodhya has again occupied the pride of place in not just BJP's, but every political party's political scheme of things in the run-up to the UP elections
Almost all parties have used the holy city as a launch pad of sorts for their campaign for the upcoming state polls
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself performed the ‘bhoomi pujan’ on August 5, 2020 for the Ram temple
 
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath frequently visits the holy town and has taken the Dussehra and Diwali celebrations to a whole new level in his tenure. From inviting foreign dignitaries to Guinness world record by lighting over 6 lakh lamps on the banks of Saryu, Yogi has done his fair share of appeasing the Gods
 
Not to be left behind in the race, opposition parties, too, are doing their political parikrama
 
Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party, hoping to repeat its 2007 success by harnessing its ‘Dalits-Brahmins’ formula, began its ‘Brahmin Sammelan’ from Ayodhya in July. Party's Brahmin face Satish Chandra Misra started the party’s campaign by offering prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi
 
The Samajwadi Party too used Ayodhya to launch its campaign with state unit chief Naresh Uttam participating in ‘khet bachaao, rozgaar bachaao‘ event on September 3. Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also said he would visit the temple with his family after its opens for public.
 
The Congress, that never associated itself with the cause of the Ram Mandir, changed its stance after the Supreme Court’s verdict. Ahead of the bhoomi pujan by the PM, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, called the laying of foundation a "celebration of national unity".
 
Even the new entrants in the UP battleground are taking the Ayodhya route to launch their political fortunes
 
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi began his party’s campaign with a public meeting at Rasulabad in Ayodhya on September 7. The venue was strategically chosen as it is near Dhannipur where a mosque is coming up as per the apex court judgement
 
AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh offered special prayers at the Ram Janmabhoomi and Hanumangarhi temple in Ayodhya as they launched the party's campaign for the 2022 polls
 
It isn’t just Ayodhya though. Political pilgrims have also touched PM’s parliamentary constituency and another holy site Varanasi 
All this worshipping has made the opposition a target for accusations of ‘soft hindutva’
But practising religion is not communalism. Targeting minorities by using religion as a crutch, excluding them from an inclusive national narrative, that fits more into the definition of communalism
Moreover, as long as constitutional morality prevails, asking the Gods for electoral favours does not diminish democratic stoutness
Whether this practice of divine appeasement stems from the abundance of religion in the state, or the abundance is maintained through the practice, is a topic for philosophical debate
But what isn’t a debate, is the obvious political strategy behind the religious stunts
The temple-runs and holy-site hopping is not for the Gods but for the voters
When the political parties ask the voters to vote in the name of their Gods, the voters comply
But if the manifesto promises go kaput, the governance dilapidates or the policies fail - who is to be held accountable?

There is tension in Mathura after right-wing Hindu groups were denied permission to install an idol of Lord Krishna inside a mosque in the city.
The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha and a few other groups had sought permission to install a Krishna idol at the deity's "actual birthplace", which it claimed is in a mosque close to a prominent temple.
The district administration denied the permission to the event that may potentially disrupt peace.
The right-wing groups had said that they would install the idol in the Shahi Idgah after a "maha jalabhishek" to "purify" the place.
The area in which the Katra Keshav Dev temple and the Shahi Idgah fall has been demarcated as the red zone, and heavy security has been deployed.
The threat to perform the ritual inside the Shahi Idgah comes at a time when the local courts are hearing a series of petitions seeking the "removal" of the 17th century mosque.

Four right-wing groups, the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, Srikrishna Janmabhumi Nirman Nyas, Narayani Sena and the Srikrishna Mukti Dal, had earlier sought permission to install a Krishna idol at the deity's "actual birthplace", which they claimed is in a mosque close to a prominent temple here on December 6.
District Magistrate Navneet Singh Chahal had turned them down, saying the question of granting permission to any event that may potentially disrupt peace does not arise.

In view of these, Mathura was divided into three zones for security purposes, the officials said, adding that the area in which the Katra Keshav Dev temple and the Shahi Idgah falls has been demarcated as the red zone, where the deployment of security personnel is the highest.
"Adequate force has also been deployed at every entry point of Mathura," Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover said.
He said checking at these entry points has been intensified.
Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC are already in place in Mathura. The section prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area.

President of Shahi Idgah committee professor Z Hasan, however, said that he has been living in Mathura for over 50 years and has always found the environment cordial and affectionate.
The suits seeking the shifting of the mosque is pending in courts, and their judgement will be honoured, committee members of the mosque said.

Two teenage boys engrossed in playing PUBG on their mobile phones were run over by a train in Mathura on Sunday, police said.
According to the police, 18-year-old Kapil and 16-year-old Rahul, both students of class 10, had gone out for a walk in the morning. But they then got engaged in playing the game on their mobile phones, police said.
The two got so engrossed in the game that they did not notice an incoming train.
Both the mobile phones were found at the accident site between Mathura Cantonment and Raya stations. While one was damaged, the other had the game running on it, the police said.

In a shocking incident a 17-year-old girl was allegedly thrown her off the second floor of her house by three men in UP's Mathura. According to the family, the accused used to harass her.
The incident took place on Monday night after which the district police lodged an FIR in the case and arrested two of the three accused.
The police have grabbed CCTV footage from the neighbourhood which purportedly shows the girl falling flat on the street outside the house.
The girls brother told reporters that the accused were harassing his sister for about a year and on Monday they barged into the&nbsp;house and flung her off the second floor. The girl is battling for her life in a hospital.
The accused also allegedly beat up other family members, including the victim's mother.

During the meeting, Khan is learnt to have thanked Priyanka Gandhi for the assistance and support provided by the Congress during and after his detention.

Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Kumar Lallu and the party's state minority cell&rsquo;s chief Shahnawaz Alam were also present during the meeting.
Khan was suspended from Gorakhpur's BRD Medical College after several children died there in 2017, apparently due to the lack of oxygen cylinders at the government hospital.
A departmental inquiry later cleared Khan of most of the charges, but he found himself in trouble for an allegedly provocative speech in Aligarh over the amended citizenship law.
He was detained under the stringent NSA, which the Allahabad High Court earlier this month ruled was illegal.
After his release, Khan had gone to Rajasthan with his family.
"There is a Congress government in Rajasthan. My family felt that we will be safe... I wanted to spend some quality time with my family," he had said.
