A spacecraft around Mars has sent back the most detailed photos yet of the red planet's little moon.
The United Arab Emirates' Amal spacecraft flew within 62 miles (100 kilometers) of Deimos last month and the close-up shots were released Monday. Amal &mdash; Arabic for Hope &mdash; got a two-for-one when Mars photobombed some of the images. It was the closest a spacecraft has been to Deimos in almost a half-century.
The spacecraft also observed the little explored far side of the odd-shaped, cratered moon, just 9 miles by 7 miles by 7 miles (15 kilometers by 12 kilometers by 12 kilometers).
Mars' other moon, Phobos, is almost double that size and better understood since it orbits much closer to Mars &mdash; just 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) away, the closest of any planet's moon in our solar system.
Deimos' orbit around Mars stretches 14,000 miles (23,000 kilometers) out. That's close to the inner part of the spacecraft's orbit &mdash; &ldquo;which is what made observing Deimos such a compelling idea,&rdquo; said the mission's lead scientist Hessa al-Matroushi.
"Phobos has got most of the attention up until now &mdash; now it's Deimos' turn!" she added in an email.
Al-Matroushi and other scientists with the UAE Space Agency said these new images indicate Deimos is not an asteroid that got captured in Mars' orbit eons ago, the leading theory until now. Instead, they say the moon appears to be of Martian origin &mdash; perhaps from the bigger Martian moon or from Mars itself.
The findings were presented Monday at the European Geosciences Union's general assembly in Vienna.
Amal will continue to sweep past Deimos this year, but not as closely as the March 10 encounter, according to al-Matroushi.
NASA's Viking 2 came within 19 miles (30 kilometers) of Deimos in 1977. Since then, other spacecraft have photographed Deimos but from much farther away.
Amal rocketed to Mars on July 19, 2020, one day shy of the 50th anniversary of humanity's first moon landing &mdash; Earth's moon, that is &mdash; by Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

India's Mars Orbiter craft has run out of propellant and its battery drained beyond the safe limit, fuelling speculation that the country's maiden interplanetary mission 'Mangalyaan' may have finally completed its long innings.
The Rs 450-crore Mars Orbiter Mission was launched onboard PSLV-C25 on November 5, 2013, and the MOM spacecraft was successfully inserted into Martian orbit on September 24, 2014 in its first attempt.
"Right now, there is no fuel left. The satellite battery has drained," sources in the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told PTI. "The link has been lost".
There was, however, no official word from the country's national space agency, headquartered here.
With fuel on board, ISRO had been performing orbital manoeuvres on MOM spacecraft to take it to a new orbit to avoid an impending eclipse in the past.
"But recently there were back-to-back eclipses including one that lasted seven-and-half hours," officials said on condition of anonymity, noting that all the propellant on board the ageing satellite had been consumed.
"As the satellite battery is designed to handle eclipse duration of only about one hour and 40 minutes, a longer eclipse would drain the battery beyond the safe limit," another official said.
ISRO officials noted that the Mars orbiter craft functioned for almost eight years, well beyond its designed mission life of six months.
"It has done its job and yielded significant scientific results," they said. The objectives of the mission were primarily technological and included design, realisation and launch of a Mars Orbiter spacecraft capable of operating with sufficient autonomy during the journey phase; Mars orbit insertion/ capture and in-orbit phase around Mars.
The MOM -- a technology demonstration venture -- carried five scientific payloads (total 15 kg) collecting data on surface geology, morphology, atmospheric processes, surface temperature and atmospheric escape process.
The five instruments are: Mars Color Camera (MCC), Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS), Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM), Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA) and Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP).
"MOM is credited with many laurels like cost-effectiveness, short period of realisation, economical mass-budget, and miniaturisation of five heterogeneous science payloads", ISRO officials pointed out.
Highly elliptical orbit geometry of MOM enabled MCC to take snap shots of 'Full disc' of Mars at its farthest point and finer details from closest point.
The MCC has produced more than 1000 images and published a Mars Atlas.
Meanwhile, plans on a follow-on 'Mangalyaan' mission to the red planet, however, are yet to be firmed up.

Springtime bloom on Mars has given rise to new discussions after an image was captured by a camera onboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. 
The image shows a patchwork of white zig-zags, shaped like polygons, spread across Martian soil on high latitudes with random sprays of some black and blue mist spread out between them. These zig-zags are typical of Martian springs. Seasons on the Red Planet are similar to Earth in numbers, however, each of those seasons are twice as long as those on Earth. Spring on Mars continues for over 190  days whereas on Earth it is just 90 days long.

The edges of the polygons crack and fray during spring when surface ice transforms from solid into a gaseous state through sublimation. When this happens, vents of dry ice spray out of Mars' surface, leaving dark, fan-shaped deposits of particles spread across the ground, researchers at University of Arizona said. 
A single ice vent may open and close multiple times, resulting in particles spraying in different directions across the planet's surface. As the particles are sprayed depending on the wind, some areas appear darker and some lighter. 
The camera onboard the Mars Reconnassaince Orbiter is called the High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HIRISE). The orbiter, which began its journey in 2006 has captured a varying amount of image, including ones of the Valles Marineris, the largest canyon in our solar system (consequently the known largest canyon in our universe). Nearly 10 times longer than Earth's Grand Canyon and three times deeper, it remains a Martian geology mystery.

In the video released by NASA, Ingenuity hovering above the surface of the red planet, while the helicopter's shadow can be seen growing smaller as it descends higher up.
Ingenuity, nicknamed Ginny, is a small robotic helicopter operating on Mars as part of NASA's Mars 2020 mission.
Ingenuity landed on Mars on February 18, 2021, along with Perseverance Rover.

NASA explained that the Airy Crater, which has been seen as the larger crater originally defined as zero longitudes for Mars. However, as higher resolution photos became available, a smaller feature was needed. This crater, called Airy-0 (zero) was selected because it did not need to adjust existing maps.

The ExoMars mission had already been pushed back from 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic and the need for more tests on the spacecraft.
