Australian skipper Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazlewood are set to miss the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy due to injuries, further depleting Australia's already weakened squad.&nbsp;
With Mitchell Marsh sidelined due to a back injury and Marcus Stoinis announcing his shock retirement from ODI cricket, the team's options for pace bowling have become even more limited.&nbsp;
Cummins is struggling with an ankle injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Hazlewood is dealing with a hip issue, following previous side and calf strains. Both pacers will need extended rehabilitation before they can return to action.
The news of Cummins and Hazlewood's exclusion came on the same day Stoinis announced his ODI retirement. With these absences, Australia will now need at least four replacements, including two all-rounders, to cover for the loss of balance and experience in the team. The final squad will be announced after the second Test against Sri Lanka, which is currently ongoing in Galle.
Marsh had already withdrawn from the tournament due to his back injury, which has worsened over time and impacted his workload during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leading him to miss the final Test. He is currently undergoing rehab. As for Cummins and Hazlewood, both will need time to recover and may also miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).
Looking ahead, Australia's next international commitment after the Champions Trophy will be the ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa in mid-June at Lord's.&nbsp;
George Bailey, chairperson of the national selection panel, said, "Unfortunately Pat, Josh and Mitch are managing some ongoing injuries and have not come up in time for the Champion's Trophy. While disappointing, it does present a great opportunity for other players to perform for Australia in a world event."
Coach Andrew McDonald has suggested Steve Smith and Travis Head as possible alternate captains for the team. Australia&rsquo;s campaign opener will be a high-profile clash with arch-rivals England in Lahore on February 22, followed by matches against South Africa and Afghanistan in Rawalpindi on February 25 and 28, respectively.

Australia&rsquo;s all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has stunned the cricketing world by announcing his immediate retirement from ODI cricket, according to a report from the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday.&nbsp;
The 35-year-old will now focus on T20I cricket, meaning he will not be available for Australia&rsquo;s upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. This decision comes at a time when Australia is already grappling with an injury crisis ahead of the tournament, set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE.&nbsp;
All-rounder Mitch Marsh has been ruled out, and key pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are serious doubts for the tournament.
As a result, Australia may be looking to bring in up to four new players for their 15-member Champions Trophy squad.&nbsp;
Players like Spencer Johnson, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Sean Abbott are among those likely to be considered as replacements. Recently, Australian cricket legend Ricky Ponting suggested that uncapped all-rounder Mitchell Owen should be considered for the Champions Trophy, noting that the 22-year-old shares many of Stoinis&rsquo; qualities.
Stoinis ends his ODI career with 71 appearances for Australia in 50-over cricket. His career includes appearances at two ICC Men's Cricket World Cups in 2019 and 2023, with his final match coming against Pakistan in Perth in November 2024.&nbsp;
Throughout his ODI career, Stoinis accumulated 1,456 runs in 64 innings, with an average of 26.69, including one century and six fifties, with a top score of 146. Additionally, he took 48 wickets at an average of 43.12, with best figures of 3/16.
Stoinis explained his decision to retire, emphasizing the desire to focus on prolonging his T20I career. However, he stated that he would remain closely involved with the Champions Trophy.&nbsp;
"Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I am grateful for every moment I have had in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I will always cherish," Stoinis said, as quoted by ICC.&nbsp;
"This was not an easy decision, but I believe it is the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I have got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and I have hugely appreciated his support."
"I will be cheering the boys on in Pakistan," he added.
Australia's head coach, Andrew McDonald, paid tribute to Stoinis, acknowledging the all-rounder's impact throughout his ODI career.&nbsp;

However, Stoinis didn&rsquo;t read much into his missing the CA contract which was announced on March 28.
&ldquo;I've got a great relationship with the (Australia) coach (Andrew McDonald). Me not getting a contract, I knew that a while ago.
&ldquo;I think it is great to give younger kids a crack and let them take my spot. I'm absolutely fine with that on the contract list,&rdquo; Stoinis said after guiding LSG to a six-wicket win over CSK.
But the 34-year-old was firm in thoughts about his career with the national team.
&ldquo;But on the playing front, obviously, I want to make sure that I'm there and that's also why it's so lucky for us and for me particularly to have this competition (IPL), that's why I love it so much,&rdquo; he said.
The Perth-born player was omitted from Australia&rsquo;s ODIs against the West Indies in January, but he is set to be part of the country&rsquo;s T20I World Cup campaign in the West Indies and the USA in June.
Stoinis is most likely to be slotted into No. 5 in the Australian line-up during the marquee event.
Stoinis is eligible for Australian selection for the tournament because his current contract for the 2023-24 season will run its course only on June 30.
However, Stoinis was clear that he wanted to play for Australia in the white ball series against England (away) in September and against Pakistan at home in November.
Stoinis along with Ashton Agar, Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff had recently decided to go freelance while turning down Western Australian contracts.

&ldquo;I have also realised that T20 cricket has changed in the last couple of years &ndash; 170-180 does not always cut it. You have to go harder in the powerplay.
&ldquo;The Impact player gives you depth and that gives you more freedom. I have not played T20 cricket in a long time.&rdquo; Asked if Nicholas Pooran can play up the order, the skipper said save him and Quinton de Kock as openers, none of the other positions are fixed.
&ldquo;There is no set plan. Apart from the openers everyone is set to go at any point. The last game, Pooran walked in at three. Hope I get the fielder of the award.&rdquo; CSK skipper Gaikwad, whose century went in vain felt that dew played a big role towards the latter half of the match.

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis has become the first centrally-contracted Australian cricketer to sign up for UAE's T20 league - the ILT20.
The 33-year-old, who is currently playing the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Stars, will join Sharjah Warriors for the month-long tournament that starts on January 13.
Stoinis will play alongside England's Moeen Ali, Dawid Malan &amp;&nbsp; Chris Woakes among other international cricketers.
