The National Award winner said mass audience always wants a hero and when theatres shut down during the pandemic, people stopped getting that from Hindi cinema but in the south, single screens have thrived.

Hindi cinema is going through a lull phase but this churning will, hopefully, lead to something better as creative people always find a way, says actor Manoj Bajpayee.
In a year where the box office once again appears to be dominated by blockbusters from the South like "Kalki 2898 AD" and "Pushpa 2: The Rule", the successful business of "Stree 2", "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3", and "Singham Again" has given some hope to Bollywood.
Asked whether Hindi cinema was in "trouble", Bajpayee said that wasn't the case.
"... But it is forcing filmmakers to think differently. And there is nothing wrong with it. I think it is churning, it's a lull period. I'm hopeful that it will go back to its natural self very soon.
"I don't see it as a problem because creative people always find a way. It is a jolt, a shock. And, now they are thinking hard and trying to come together to find a solution to it. And they will find a solution," the actor told PTI in an interview during a visit to the news agency's headquarters.
Bajpayee said the horror comedy "Stree 2", which earned over Rs 800 crore at the box office, did "remarkable" business.
"That means people are somewhere willing to go to theatres but they want something else. And that 'something else', a filmmaker has to really innovate and think hard about... My films these days come onto OTT and they have an even bigger audience.
"Last year, my film 'Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai' amassed historical views on OTT. If we convert it into rupees (box office collection), then it would be called an all-time blockbuster. The same goes for 'Gulmohar'."

"We always search for a hero in our films. In the changing times, people stopped getting their hero because there were many multiplexes. The South never let the multiplexes flourish and maintained unity. They knew that their cinema would survive only through mass audiences.
"But we (Hindi industry) changed because while multiplexes were coming up, an aspirational India was also emerging. They wanted their hero. The kind of heroes they got, who ruled for 20-30 years... During COVID, there was a shift as mass audiences were going to theatres in big numbers but the multiplex audience chose to sit at home and enjoy OTT."
Rising ticket costs could also be a factor in people choosing to stay at home and enjoy movies on the OTT, according to Bajpayee.
Citing the example of "Pushpa 2" star Allu Arjun, he said the Telugu actor is giving the audiences the kind of films they want.
"The person who is going to the theatres is a mass guy and he can't afford the ticket for a multiplex. Our mass audience can't go to the multiplex but even if they can go there, they want to see 'Pathaan', 'Jawan' or 'Animal'. The single screens are running packed and their audience sees their hero in Allu Arjun. He is giving them the kind of film that should be enjoyed in theatres," added the actor, who worked with Arjun in "Vedam" and "Happy".
Whether it is Allu Arjun, Jr NTR or Mahesh Babu, the audiences in the north are not new to these actors as they have been watching their Hindi-dubbed films for years now through satellite TV channels and streamers, the actor said.
"I did some Tamil and Telugu films during those days. One day someone told me that they liked my movie 'Khatron Ka Khiladi'. I wondered when I did a film titled 'Khatron Ka Khiladi'?' Later I realised that it was the name of my Telugu or Tamil films which were dubbed in Hindi," said Bajpayee, who has starred in Tamil movies "Anjaan" and "Samar" and Telugu titles "Prema Katha" and "Puli".
Bajpayee, who is friends with many Malayalam actors and filmmakers, said he wants to venture into Malayalam films.
"They are making very good films. But they are also aware of the fact that I don't know the language. So, they'll get me those roles that have very less Malayalam dialogues or a character who speaks Hindi, English or doesn't speak a word."

In the interview, Bajpayee shed light on common issues like substance abuse and divorces within the Hindi film industry.&nbsp;

Responding to queries regarding these challenges, the versatile actor emphasized the need to refer to the industry as the &lsquo;Hindi Film Industry&rsquo;. Bajpayee added that isolated incidents within the industry should not overshadow the dedication and sincerity of most of its members, estimating that around 95% of his peers exhibit passion not only towards their craft but also their relationships.
He further added, &lsquo;A few incidents here and there cannot prove that the whole industry is like that. In today&rsquo;s date, if you go to Tees Hazari Court and ask about the divorce rate, you will realise where we have come today where relationships and marriages are breaking out every day. Our society adapted the nuclear family trend and there are benefits of it too, but the harm that nuclear family trend caused you can see it in the courts today.&rsquo; Open-mindedness in Bollywood 
Bajpayee pointed out the societal shifts reflected in the industry's dynamics, citing the rising divorce rates in the society. He added, &lsquo;So, is the industry not part of society? People who belong to the same society are part of the industry. When people belong to the same society, then isn&rsquo;t it obvious the change in society will also be visible in industry. Previously, in the same industry, there were not as many divorces as there are today. The industry is very open-minded, which is quite a good thing. Creative people will have to be open minded.&rsquo;&nbsp; &nbsp; Drawing parallels, Bajpayee noted the evolving mindset of creative professionals, and the necessity for openness in navigating these changes.&nbsp;

Recently, self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is serving life imprisonment for a similar crime, slapped the makers with a legal notice and asked the courts to issue &lsquo;prohibitory orders against the promotion and release of the film.&rsquo; In a recent interview with indianexpress.com, Manoj Bajpayee, who plays lawyer PC Solanki in the film, shared that he doesn&rsquo;t consider the film &lsquo;controversial&rsquo; but &lsquo;socially relevant&rsquo;. He further said that this film could act as a &lsquo;learning&rsquo; for many parents. &lsquo;It&rsquo;s not about courage, it&rsquo;s about a story that needs to be told. I knew there is a cause. For me, it was not a controversial issue but a security issue. This girl went through hell and yet stood strong.

Be it Solanki, or even all of us, we took strength from this woman, she is the real hero&rsquo;. Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who will soon be seen in the Zee5 film &lsquo;Bandaa&rsquo;, recalled that after he got fame, he &lsquo;tried to be someone else&rsquo; and that made him feel &lsquo;claustrophobic&rsquo;. He also talked about the kind of roles he plays onscreen.&nbsp;

Actor Manoj Bajpayee is currently busy with promotions of his upcoming film &lsquo;Bandaa&rsquo; which premieres on Zee5 on May 23. In a recent interview, Manoj recalled the time when he tried to be someone else because that is what people expected him to be. However, he soon realised that it does not give him happiness.
Speaking with Bollywood Hungama, <a href="https://www.editorji.com/entertainment-news/bollywood/manoj-bajpayee-on-his-struggles-in-the-industry-failure-never-defines-you-1677573599396">Manoj</a> said, &lsquo;Since the time I started getting some kind of recognition, there were choices in front of me. I tried to be someone else after the fame and recognition because people were constantly asking me to be this way or that way, or behave this way or that way. Then in a month, I realised that it&rsquo;s not giving me happiness.
The actor further said that he felt &lsquo;claustrophobic&rsquo; as he couldn&rsquo;t be himself.
&lsquo;I started feeling claustrophobic. I started feeling quite suffocated where I could not be myself and that was the time I decided to do it my way,&rsquo; he said.
Manoj added that he has selected roles in which he gets to play characters that are relatable to the common man. &lsquo;It was not a conscious choice to be known as a common man. This is what I was and this is what I was very comfortable with. Whatever happened, happened quite organically after that. I didn&rsquo;t choose those roles because I wanted to be known a certain way,&rsquo; he said.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee opened up about his struggles in the film industry at the Arth Cultural Fest. The actor said that failure or success never defines the person. He said, 'When there is no work, there is a lot of work.'
Manoj added, 'So, rejection never defines you. Failure never defines you, similarly, success doesn&rsquo;t define you. Manoj Bajpayee, as an actor, is the same now as he was 30 years ago.'
Talking about the lowest phase in career and wanting a chance, he continued, 'I was not a bad actor even when I failed. According to the market and commercial aspects, I was a failure. But, the work I was doing, in my perspective, wasn&rsquo;t a failure. I just knew one thing &ndash; I&rsquo;ll get a chance and make a comeback.'
The actor has also revealed that he is a trained dancer but quit the dream of being a dancer when he watched Hrithik Roshan. In an exclusive interview with, Curly Tales, he said, 'Since I'm from theatre, there used to be a prerequisite that an artist should know how to sing. Even if you do not become a frontline singer, you must be a chorus singer at least. Yes, I used to dance as well.'
He added, 'Main Chhau dance mein trained hoon lekin jab Hrithik aya na. Maine Hrithik ko dekha toh maine kaha aaj ke baad dancing ka khwaab band kyuki ab ye nahi seekh sakta main (I'm trained in Chhau dance but when Hrithik came in the industry and I saw his performance, I told myself 'this is the end of my dream of dance as I can't learn this).'
On the work front, Manoj Bajpayee is awaiting the release of his film 'Gulmohar' which will stream on Disney+ Hotstar on March 3.

The actor&rsquo;s spokesperson told indianexpress.com, Sir&rsquo;s mother was admitted to a hospital in Delhi for over a week. She passed away this morning.
Her health has reportedly been improving for the last few days, but her condition deteriorated on Wednesday night. Manoj was at his mother's side. He recently wrapped up the shooting of his courtroom drama &lsquo;Bandaa&rsquo; and headed to Delhi after the completion of the shoot to be with his unwell mother.&nbsp;
He has, in the past, revealed how his mother has always been his support system.
The actor had lost his father in October last year. At that time, Manoj had tweeted, 'Thank you all for sending prayers and love on the sad demise of my father who was the sole reason and support for me to venture on such a difficult journey which got me everything that I dreamt of!! Eternally grateful to you all.'
Geeta Devi is survived by three sons and three daughters.
