<p>Animal activists have rescued more than 60 birds injured by kite &lsquo;manjha&rsquo; in Mumbai as part of a three-day drive during the Makar Sankranti celebrations, a wildlife welfare group representative said.</p>
<p><br>Despite a ban on the sale and manufacture of Chinese manjha across various states in India, the use of nylon and glass-coated strings persists and they are discarded irresponsibly by people, he said.</p>
<p><br>During a three-day camp organised from January 13 to 15 by the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) and RiWild, more than 60 injured birds were rescued across the city, RAWW fonder Pawan Sharma said.</p>
<p>Some birds died before they could be rescued, while some did not survive by the time they were taken in for treatment due to the nature of injuries caused by manjha, he said.</p>
<p>The rescued birds were being medically examined and many were scheduled for surgeries and further rehabilitation, a RiWild representative said.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We have been recovering and disposing of the manjha found at different places so that it does not claim the lives of more birds,&rdquo; said Sharma.&nbsp;</p>

The accused, Chalapathi, was supposed to carry out the animal sacrifice and cut the goat’s head. According to the police, Chalapathi was drunk at the time of the sacrifice and cut the throat of Suresh, who was holding the animal.

<p>The harvest festival of Makar Sankranti is celebrated with a lot of fervour across the country. The festival is dedicated to the God of the Sun and marks the sun's transit into Makara raashi.</p>
<p>Talking about the day, celebrities share their special Makar Sankranti memory. Let&rsquo;s hear what tales do they have to share.</p>
<p><strong>Sharad Malhotra</strong></p>
<p>"I have been fond of kite flying since my Kolkata days. I used to fly kites even on the sets of Maharana Pratap. This year I would also like to fly kites. I will eat sweets made of sesame seeds and jaggery without bothering about the calorie intake."</p>
<p><strong>Angad Hasija</strong></p>
<p>"The fondest memory is my mom preparing brunch for us and neighbours in Punjab. I also used to participate in kite flying competitions in school. I'm shooting this year, so I'm not sure how much I will be able to do."&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Aditya Deshmukh</strong></p>
<p>"In Marathi, there's this one quote, as far as Makar Sankranti is concerned, "Til gud ghya, aani Goad Goad bola", it means eat sesame seed ladoos and say all good and sweet things. So that's the main part of Makar Sankranti."</p>

<p>"I was 8 when I started flying kites when only a few kids around knew how to fly kites. It was pure joy. My mother would make urad dal khichdi and serve with homemade ghee on this day. It was a day of fun and flavours."</p>

<p>"This festival used to be like a mini Diwali. Kite flying tradition during this festival of Makar Sankranti, which is also called uttarayan, is grandly followed in Gujarat which I got to experience when I was studying hotel management in Ahmedabad."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Makar Sankranti is one festival that we celebrate with full of Dhamaka and fun in Gujarat. Given the current scenario I'll be in Mumbai only. I will take my daughter to the building rooftop and fly kites with her."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In previous years during the shows, I used to fly kites on the set along with the cast and crew and I miss that. Maybe I'll go on the rooftop and fly kites with the building kids and my mom is surely going to make Undhiyo."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"On the day my wife cooks special food that has 60 different ingredients. It is called &ldquo;Bhugi ki sabzi&rdquo; with Bajre ki roti with butter. It's so tasty. There's this roti made of gud that we also enjoy. I love kite flying. My son and I did it every year along with our neighbours."</p>

<p>"It's a festival of prosperity and happiness. I grew up in Delhi, people there fly kites. When we were kids, we used to enjoy it a lot. Even my dad used to love flying kites. I don&rsquo;t know how much would be possible this year."</p>

<p>"In my hometown in Himachal I couldn't get an opportunity to fly kites as we don't fly kites there. This year I will go to a friend's place for some time to fly kites as I am not shooting for any show."</p>
