Whether you should buy the parts and fix it yourself or let Apple do it depends on what needs to be fixed and how confident you are in your own repair skills. But if you don't already have a full set of tools, you won't save much money on repairs like fixing the screen if you don't already have them.
People with a broken iPhone or Mac should think about the Self Service Repair program, but it is not for the faint of heart.
