93% of the candidates who won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are millionaires, up from 88% in 2019, according to an analysis by the Association of Democratic Reforms or ADR. Out of 543 winning candidates, 504 are millionaires. The top three wealthiest candidates are TDP's Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur constituency with assets worth 5,705 crore rupees, BJP's Konda Vishweshwar Reddy from Telangana's Chevella with 4,568 crore rupees, and BJP's Naveen Jindal from Haryana&rsquo;s Kurukshetra with 1,241 crore rupees.
In 2019, 475 (88 per cent) winning candidates were millionaires and 443 (82 per cent) in 2014.
The trend indicates a steady climb since 2009 when only 315 (58 per cent) MPs were millionaires.

According to the analysis, 227 (95 per cent) of the BJP's 240 winning candidates, 92 (93 per cent) of the Congress' 99, 21 (95 per cent) of the DMK's 22, 27 (93 per cent) of the TMC's 29 and 34 (92 per cent) of the Samajwadi Party's 37 candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.
All winning candidates of the AAP (3), the JDU (12) and the TDP (16) are millionaires, ADR data showed.
The analysis also delves into candidates&rsquo; chances of winning based on their financial backgrounds.
It found that the probability of a millionaire candidate clinching victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections stood at 19.6 per cent, compared to a meagre 0.7 per cent for candidates with assets less than a crore.
The analysis also provides a breakdown of wealth distribution among the winning candidates.
The data showed that 42 per cent of the candidates possess assets totalling Rs 10 crore and above.
While 19 per cent of the candidates fall within the bracket of Rs 5 to 10 crore, 32 per cent hold assets ranging between Rs 1 and 5 crore.
Only about 1 per cent of the winning candidates have assets worth less than Rs 20 lakh.

Responding to the court's decision, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vehemently expressed her disagreement, stating, "I will not accept this decision." She further added, "The BJP's opinion will not be considered. OBC reservation is in effect and will always remain in effect."
Reacting to Mamata Banerjee's remarks, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused her of attempting to subvert reservation policies by granting OBC status to 118 Muslim communities without proper backwardness assessment. He welcomed the High Court's decision and questioned the democratic integrity of West Bengal's governance, emphasizing the need for adherence to judicial orders.
Shah asserted, "We will ensure the implementation of the High Court's decision, ensuring that backward communities receive their rights, not succumbing to appeasement politics and vote-bank policies that deprive the genuinely marginalized."

Authorities have seized cash, drugs and other inducements worth Rs 8,889 crore that were aimed to influence voters in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, the Election Commission said on Saturday.
At 45 per cent, drugs formed the biggest chunk of the total seizures.
Narcotics worth around Rs 3,959 crore were seized, it said.
Drugs, liquor, precious metals, freebies and cash influence elections in varying degrees, some flowing directly as inducements while others through reduced levels of circulation of money, the poll authority said.
The Commission said it has laid special emphasis on the seizure of narcotics and psychotropic substances.
Analysis of data found that states and Union Territories that used to be transit zones are increasingly becoming consumption territories of drugs, it said.
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad, Narcotics Control Bureau and the Indian Coast Guard in joint operations have made three high-value seizures of drugs in just three days, amounting to Rs 892 crore, the poll panel noted.
"Rs 849.15 crore in cash, Rs 814.85 crore worth of liquor, drugs worth Rs 3,958.85 crore and precious metals worth Rs 1,260.33 crore have been seized," it added.
Besides Gujarat, Maharashtra and Delhi have also shown seizures of drugs.
On April 17, Noida police busted a drug factory in Greater Noida wherein 26.7 kg of MDMA drug valued at Rs 150 crore were seized and two persons of foreign origin arrested.
The seizures in other areas have equally been impressive and surpass the entire seizures of 2019 parliamentary elections by a big margin, EC said.
With the increasing intensity of campaigning in the last three phases, the Commission is keeping a close tab on attempts at influencing voters through inducements and has directed its state chief electoral officers and enforcement agencies to step up the vigil.

During the Karnataka Assembly elections last year, Eshwarappa allegedly agreed to step aside after the party promised to give his son a Lok Sabha ticket. Eshwarappa wanted Kanthesh to be fielded from Haveri.
Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai is contesting from the seat instead.
Eshwarappa will now fight as an independent candidate against former CM BS Yediyurappa&rsquo;s son and incumbent Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra.

CPI state secretary Mahendra Pathak said the names of the candidates will be announced after March 16.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Sunday parted ways with the opposition bloc INDIA in Jharkhand, announcing that it will contest in eight of the state's 14 Lok Sabha seats in the upcoming elections.
The CPI has no representation in the Lower House of Parliament from Jharkhand.
"We have decided to contest the Lok Sabha polls on our own," CPI state secretary Mahendra Pathak told PTI.
"The BJP has announced its candidates, but the Congress and the 'Mahagathbandhan' have not yet held any talks on seat-sharing. So, we have decided to go solo," he said.
The decision was taken at the party's state executive committee meeting here, he said.
The CPI will field its candidates in Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Chatra, Palamu, Giridih, Dumka and Jamshedpur Lok Sabha constituencies.
Names of the candidates will be announced after March 16, Pathak said.
Meanwhile, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which leads the ruling coalition in Jharkhand, said such a decision by the CPI state unit raises questions over discipline within the party.
"It is beyond my understanding... if the state unit can take such decisions. Discussions on seat-sharing are already underway at the national level,&rdquo; JMM spokesperson Manoj Pandey said.
Of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, the BJP has 11, AJSU party one, JMM one and the Congress has one.
However, the Congress' lone MP Geeta Kora recently shifted to the BJP.
Within the ruling alliance, the JMM has 29 MLAs, the Congress has 17 and the RJD has one.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, BJP MP from Hisar Brijendra Singh on Sunday resigned from the party's primary membership due to "compelling political reasons" and joined the Congress.
Soon after announcing his resignation on X, Bijendra Singh, the son of BJP leader Birender Singh, reached Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence in New Delhi and joined the opposition party.
"I have resigned from the primary membership of BJP due to compelling political reasons. I extend gratitude to the party, National President Sh. J P Nadda, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, &amp; Sh Amit Shah for giving me the opportunity to serve as the Member of Parliament for Hisar," Brijendra Singh said in his post.
Senior Congress leaders Ajay Maken, Mukul Wasnik and Deepak Babaria were also present at Kharge's residence when Bijendra Singh joined the party.
Congress sources said the bureaucrat-turned-politician is set to be the party candidate from Hisar.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Bijendra Singh had defeated JJP's Dushyant Chautala and Bhavya Bishnoi, who was then with the Congress, to win the Hisar Lok Sabha seat.
Bijendra Singh is the great grandson of prominent Jat leader Sir Chhotu Ram.

The Election Commission of India is reportedly expected to announce the dates for the Lok Sabha elections around March 14.
Sources quoted by NDTV said that the poll body may declare the poll schedule after visiting Jammu and Kashmir from March 11.
The Elections Commission will be in the union territory till Wednesday to assess the situation to hold elections.
The general elections are expected to be held in April and May. Ruling BJP and main Opposition Congress have released their first lists of candidates.
Some of the members of the Opposition's INDIA bloc have finalised seat-sharing deals, while consensus is yet to be achieved in many states.

Meanwhile, in a shock move, Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned on Saturday, days before the expected announcement of the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
His tenure was till December 5, 2027, and he would have become Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) after incumbent Rajiv Kumar retired in February next year.
Opposition parties, including Congress and TMC, have questioned Goel's sudden resignation.&nbsp;
In a post on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, "Election Commission or Election OMISSION? India now has only one Election Commissioner, even as Lok Sabha elections are to be announced in few days. Why?" "As I have said earlier, if we do not stop the systematic decimation of our independent institutions, our democracy shall be usurped by dictatorship!" he said.

Jyotiraditya Scindia will contest from Guna (Madhya Pradesh), Sarbananda Sonowal from Dibrugarh (Assam), Bhupender Yadav from Alwar (Rajasthan), Rajeev Chandrashekhar from Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), V Muraleedharan from Attingal (Kerala) Parshottam Rupala from Rajkot (Gujarat) and Mansukh Mandaviya from Porbandar (Gujarat).

A day after the BJP named singer-actor Pawan Singh as its candidate for the Asansol Lok Sabha seat, the Bhojpuri star refused the offer.
In a post on X, Singh expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership for showing faith in him but said he will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol &nbsp;due to some reason.
This comes as a setback to the saffron party which released its first list of 195 candidates on Saturday.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal formally joined the BJP-led NDA alliance on 2nd March.
Chaudhary met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi and announced the tie-up on X.
In a separate social media post, Shah said Chaudhary will strengthen the NDA's resolve for the upliftment of farmers, poor and deprived classes.
