The government sold over 22.13 crore shares or a 3.5 per cent stake in LIC through the IPO. The price band of the issue was Rs 902-949 a share. However, shares were allocated to investors on May 12 at the upper end of the price band.

LIC policyholders and retail investors have got the shares at a price of Rs 889 and Rs 904 a piece, respectively. The grey market premium (GMP) on the Life Insurance Corporation shares fell from as high as Rs 90 a share to zero and now finally to the negative zone. But the uncertainty in stock markets due to Russia-Ukraine war pushed the issue to current fiscal which begun in April.

Supreme Court refuses to stay LIC IPO but agreed to hear a plea against Govt's decision to sell 5% stake filed by select policy holders. The petitioners challenged the legality of the government's move to pass the decision to launch the LIC's IPO through a Money bill.The court said it would not grant interim relief as it involved investments as the top court observed that 73 lakh applicants subscribed to the LIC IPO. An LIC policyholder had petitioned the Madras High Court challenging provisions of the Finance Act, 2021 and the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) Act, 1956 on the ground that they were introduced by way of a Money Bill under Article 110 of the Constitution of India, even though the amendment did not fall in the category of a Money Bill. The appeal in the Supreme Court states that the amendments being challenged effectively reduce the share of LIC’s surplus which the petitioner is legally entitled to, causing losses to her and other participating policyholders to the tune of Rs 4.4 lakh crore.The LIC IPO, the largest ever in India , will be listed on the bourses on May 17 and the issue has been subscribed 2.95 times.

The initial public offering (IPO) of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) — India’s largest-ever for the domestic markets is going vocal for locals! 
The Rs 21,000-crore IPO has seen a muted response from the foreign investors.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the foreign institutional funds have put orders for only 2 per cent of the shares set aside for the institutional buyers. Most of the investment has been done by domestic investors.
LIC IPO: Issue subscribed 2.28 times on final day
The initial public offering of Life Insurance Corporation of India has received healthy response from investors as the offer has subscribed 2.28 times, receiving bids for 37.01 crore equity shares against IPO size of 16.2 crore equity shares.
The portion set aside for policyholders has been subscribed 5.53 times, employees bid 4.10 times the allotted quota and retail investors 1.77 times, while the reserved portion of qualified institutional buyers has booked 1.67 times and that of non-institutional investors 1.77 times.
The LIC IPO will list on the bourses on May 17 and the allotment of the shares will be announced on May 12.

Most of the bidding for the shares has been done by domestic investors. We look at 3 reasons for the same.

As per the data available at the time of writing this copy, foreign institutional funds have put in orders for merely 8% of the shares set aside for all institutional buyers. Even if you analyse the anchor investors' portfolio, 70% of the Rs 5600 cr anchor book was only domestic investors. However the IPO&nbsp;did draw in some interest from&nbsp;sovereign funds from Norway and Singapore.
Foreign investors shying away from the LIC&nbsp;IPO&nbsp;is also a reflection of the current market scenario, where FPIs&nbsp;have been sellers in the Indian equity market for the last 7 months. In fact in just the last 4 months, foreign funds have pulled out $17.7 billion from the Indian markets.&nbsp;

However, the Qualified Institutional Buyer (QIB) and Non-Institutional Investor (NII) portions have received a tepid response so far. Non-institutional investors' segment was subscribed 47 per cent, while QIBs' portion was slightly lower at 40 per cent.
Retail individual investors picked up nearly 93 per cent of the 6.9 crore shares set aside for this segment.
Of the total, the policyholders' portion was subscribed a little over three times, while that for employees was subscribed 2.21 times.
LIC has fixed the price band at Rs 902-949 per equity share for the issue. The offer includes a reservation for eligible employees and policyholders. The retail investors and eligible employees will get a discount of Rs 45 per equity share, while policyholders will get a discount of Rs 60 per share.

LIC was formed by merging and nationalising 245 private life insurance companies on September 1, 1956, with an initial capital of Rs 5 crore.
Its product portfolio comprises 32 individual products (16 participating products and 16 non-participating products) and seven individual optional rider benefits. The insurer's group product portfolio comprises 11 group products.

As on December 2021, LIC had a market share of 61.6 per cent in terms of gross written premium, 61.4 per cent in terms of new business premium, 71.8 per cent in terms of the number of individual policies issued, and 88.8 per cent in terms of the number of group policies issued.

The government may be looking to cut down the size of Life Insurance Corporation or LIC&nbsp;IPO&nbsp;size by 40%.
As per reports, the government could cut down LIC&nbsp;IPO&nbsp;size to Rs 30,000 crore&nbsp;from Rs 50,000 - 55,000 crore&nbsp;previously estimated.
A Bloomberg report cites the Russia Ukraine war as the primary reason for cutting down the size as the geopolitical situation has put a dent in the valuations.
The report also stated that India's biggest IPO&nbsp;could be listed in the next two weeks.
As recently as April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s administration was looking to raise Rs 50,000 crore&nbsp;by selling as much as 7 percent of LIC. The stake sale now could be a little over 5 percent on muted demand from investors.
The government, last week, amended the rules of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), paving the way for up to 20 percent foreign direct investment in the insurance behemoth LIC.
LIC in February had filed the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) before the markets regulator SEBI for the IPO. Last month, Sebi gave approval to the draft papers.
LIC&nbsp;IPO would be bigger than One 97 Communications which raised about Rs 18,300 crore&nbsp;in November and is known to be the biggest Indian IPO&nbsp;till date.
Firms in India have raised about $1.1 billion through IPOs this year, data compiled by Bloomberg show. That&rsquo;s less than half of the nearly $3 billion raised in the same period in 2021.

The government could now be tapping the markets for Rs 30,000 crore, significantly less than Rs 50,000 crore&nbsp;estimated earlier. Also, India's biggest IPO&nbsp;could list in the next two weeks. Earlier, the government was planning to sell around 7 percent stake, which would now just be 5 percent.

As per reports, the government could cut down LIC&nbsp;IPO&nbsp;size to Rs 30,000 crore&nbsp;from Rs 50,000 - 55,000 crore&nbsp;previously estimated.
A Bloomberg report cites the Russia Ukraine war as the primary reason for cutting down the size as the geopolitical situation has put a dent in the valuations.
The report also stated that India's biggest IPO&nbsp;could be listed in the next two weeks.
As recently as April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s administration was looking to raise Rs 50,000 crore&nbsp;by selling as much as 7 percent of LIC. The stake sale now could be a little over 5 percent on muted demand from investors.
The government, last week, amended the rules of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), paving the way for up to 20 percent foreign direct investment in the insurance behemoth LIC.
LIC in February had filed the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) before the markets regulator SEBI for the IPO. Last month, Sebi gave approval to the draft papers.
