Several leaders and activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were detained by the police on Tuesday ahead of a proposed protest rally in Mira Bhayander town of Thane district.
Tensions prevailed in Mira Bhayander as police rounded up protestors who had gathered to participate in the rally proposed by the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has maintained that permission had been granted for the rally, in which MNS leaders planned to participate, but the party insisted on a specific route which posed law and order challenges.
State Minister Pratap Sarnaik, however, has termed the police action as "wrong" and not in line with government directives.
Videos of several MNS activists, including women, packed in police vans have surfaced on social media, but the number of people detained has not been revealed.
Protesters shouted slogans against the government, criticising it for not allowing the morcha.
The police also confined several activists inside a banquet hall to prevent them from reaching the protest venue.
The MNS's Thane unit chief, Ravindra More, posted a video on social media, which showed activists detained inside the banquet hall, many of them holding black placards condemning the government.
"Our peaceful protesters were stopped even before they could reach the site. This is not democracy," More wrote in his post.
According to sources, the police started detaining MNS workers in the early hours of the day before they could arrive at the protest venue from different parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
"The preventive action was taken to maintain law and order," said an official, declining to comment on the use of a banquet hall as a detention space.
There is heavy police deployment in the Mira Bhayander town, as the situation remains tense.
Meanwhile, State Minister and Shiv Sena leader Pratap Sarnaik criticised the police for prohibiting the morcha, saying that the action was uncalled for and not in line with any government directive.
Speaking to reporters in Thane, Sarnaik said, "The police's action was completely wrong. The government has not issued any such instructions to suppress a peaceful morcha in support of Marathi interests." He further asserted that he would discuss the matter with the chief minister.
"The manner in which the police stopped the morcha and detained people early in the morning is unjustified. If the protestors had been allowed to proceed peacefully, there would have been no law and order issue," he said.
Condemning the police action, the minister said he is also proceeding to participate in the morcha.
"This kind of attitude by the police is unwarranted, and if the Marathi-speaking people had sought permission for a peaceful morcha, the police should have permitted them," he said.&nbsp;

Mumbai, Jul 2 (PTI): In the wake of the Maharashtra government's decision to retract orders on the three-language policy, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut firmly expressed that they would not endorse such a policy now or in the future.
Following significant opposition to the introduction of the Hindi language in Maharashtra schools from classes 1 to 5, the state cabinet reversed its decision by withdrawing two government orders related to the policy implementation.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has since announced the setup of a committee led by educationist Narendra Jadhav to chart out the future course concerning the language policy.
Addressing journalists, Raut commented, "Fadnavis is fond of establishing committees and SITs, but these lead nowhere." He remarked on the committee's lack of relevance, stating, "Jadhav is recognized as an esteemed economist, but the committee has no significance now. We will reject the three-language policy moving forward."
A 'Marathi Vijay Diwas' event, a joint effort by the Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), is scheduled for July 5 in Mumbai as a response to the GR withdrawal. According to Raut, discussions are ongoing between leaders from both groups.
"We've extended invitations to prominent figures and the public. The credit for the GR's cancellation belongs to the Marathi community. We are merely the facilitators. MNS chief Raj Thackeray and our leader Uddhav Thackeray have both been included in consultations," he related.
Raut mentioned the challenge of inviting everyone personally due to time constraints.
He criticized the Fadnavis administration for allegedly destabilizing the Shiv Sena and the NCP through financial incentives, intimidation, and leveraging the ED, CBI, and the Election Commission.
Additionally, he censured Prime Minister Narendra Modi's central government over its handling of the Pahalgam terror attack and its inability to conclusively prove Pakistan's involvement in terror incidents within India.
Raut highlighted a concerning statistic that over 1,000 farmers in Maharashtra have succumbed to suicide in the past three months and questioned if the prime minister is aware of this dire situation.
He also criticized the government's communication regarding the Ahmedabad plane crash.
When asked about the upcoming Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) meeting in Delhi and its potential impact on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Raut expressed, "The RSS and BJP share a fraternal relationship. If the RSS desires, it has the capability to impart crucial lessons to the BJP. The BJP's current strength arises from the efforts of RSS workers."

According to the order, all students in classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools will now mandatorily study Hindi as the third language "generally".
"Those who wish to learn any other language as an option to Hindi, should meet the expectation of 20 students from each standard in a school. In such a situation, a teacher for that particular language will be made available or the language will be taught online," the order stated.
Critics claim the government's latest move contradicts earlier statements of School Education Minister Dada Bhuse that Hindi would not be mandatory for the primary classes.
Though the government order provides a conditional option for students to opt for another Indian language instead of Hindi, it stipulates that a minimum of 20 students per school must opt for the alternative.
If a such demand arises, either a teacher will be appointed or the language will be taught online, the order added.
The directive also mandates that in schools following other mediums of instruction, the three-language formula must include the medium language, Marathi and English.
Earlier this year, the state government faced widespread backlash for its proposal to introduce Hindi from class 1.On April 22, Bhuse said Hindi would no longer be compulsory in classes 1 to 5.Last month, the minister at an event in Pune said, "The decision to introduce Hindi from class 1 as a third language was taken earlier. However, many parents have suggested it be introduced from class 3 instead. We will consider these suggestions before taking any further decision."
He also said at the time that the three-language formula was "on hold" and schools would continue with the existing two-language system for now.
But the latest order appears to contradict that assurance, prompting a fresh wave of opposition."This is nothing but the backdoor imposition of Hindi," claimed Deepak Pawar of the Mumbai-based Marathi Bhasha Abhyas Kendra, working to preserve the Marathi language."The government has betrayed the Marathi people. If we remain silent now, it will pave the way for dismantling the federal structure and the legacy of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement," he charged in a social media post, urging people to protest.
Vasant Kalpande, former chairman of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, said it is unlikely to find 20 students in a class opting for a non-Hindi language."The provision to make teacher available online is also an attempt to discourage opting for any other language than Hindi. Although, Marathi and Hindi have similar scripts, it will be too much for students of such young age to learn the nuances and differences between the scripts," he claimed.
Hindi as a third language is not mandatory in Gujarat and Assam, Kalpande pointed out.
