A major Russian strike hit Kyiv overnight, killing three people, including a 14-year-old, and injuring 12 others, officials said.

A "massive" Russian attack on Kyiv on Thursday killed at least three people and wounded a dozen others, officials in the Ukrainian capital said.
Powerful explosions rocked the city overnight, illuminating the sky and leaving behind a column of smoke, AFP journalists saw.
The city's military administration said three people had been confirmed dead and 12 wounded, with "significant damage" to residential buildings. One of those killed was a 14-year-old, according to the administration's head Tymur Tkachenko.
The attack comes as Moscow and Kyiv trade blame over an impasse in diplomatic efforts towards a peace deal which have been spearheaded by US President Donald Trump.
An AFP journalist in Kyiv saw red tracer bullets sailing through the night sky in an effort to intercept drones above the city centre. At least one missile appeared to be shot down.
Around 100 people took refuge in a subway station, with some lying in sleeping bags and others holding their pets.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko described Russia's latest strikes as a "massive attack" which caused damage in five districts of the capital.
A five-storey building in the Darnytsky district had collapsed, the mayor reported.
Kyiv suffered one of its worst attacks of the over three-year war on July 31, leaving more than 30 people dead including five children.
Russian forces have been slowly but steadily gaining ground in Ukraine in recent months, as diplomatic efforts have accelerated.
Trump held a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska this month, followed by a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies.
But there has been little progress since then.
Before concluding any peace agreement, Ukraine wants security guarantees from the West to deter any future Russian attacks.
Moscow has cast Kyiv's demands as unrealistic and has raised particular objection to the notion of stationing Western peacekeeping troops in Ukraine.
Zelensky said on Wednesday that members of his administration would meet with US officials in New York on Friday.
The Ukrainian leader said he saw "very arrogant and negative signals from Moscow regarding the negotiations", urging extra "pressure" to "force Russia to take real steps".

Moscow said it attacked Ukraine as retaliation for a strike using Western missiles on a chemical plant in Russia earlier in the week.
Russian aerial attacks regularly target the capital but rarely cause damage of that scale as Kyiv is well protected by air defence, nearly three years into Russia's invasion.
"There were explosions after explosions in a row," said 45-year-old Ksenia, who was staying at a hotel near the site of a wreckage.
The air force said it downed all five Iskander missiles Russia launched at the capital, but that debris caused damage in several districts.
The strikes killed a 53-year-old man and wounded 12 people, most suffering from shrapnel injuries, the city's administration said.
They also damaged a building housing the diplomatic missions of Albania, Argentina, Palestine, North Macedonia, Portugal and Montenegro, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.
"Another heinous Russian attack against Kyiv," European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen posted on X. "Putin's disregard for international law reaches new heights."
In the absence of the Russian ambassador in Lisbon, the charg&eacute; d'affaires of the Russian Federation has been summoned to be presented with a formal protest, the Portuguese government said.
"These are barbaric attacks on diplomatic institutions, this is crossing all possible red lines and international rules," foreign ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhy was quoted as saying by Ukrainian agency Interfax.
The building of the Kyiv National Linguistics University was also impacted, according to the institution's Instagram account, which posted photos of a main campus building whose windows had been completely blown out, glass shards covering the floor.

Victoria, a 35-year-old doctor, had come out to look at the charred cars and buildings with blown-out windows at the site of an attack.
"Russians should burn in hell," she said.
Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ignat said Ukraine Patriot air defence systems had been deployed to shoot down the missiles.
The Ukrainian think tank Defence Express said: "All the missiles were successfully intercepted, but in one case, the warhead failed to be destroyed and it exploded near a business centre in the city centre."
Moscow claimed responsibility for the overnight attack on Ukraine, carried out a day after Russian leader Vladimir Putin threatened to strike Kyiv.
"You know that such strikes on Russian territory have been carried out, and you know that the president has said that every time there will be a response," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
His comment came soon after the Russian defence ministry said that "in response to the actions of the Kyiv regime, supported by its Western handlers, a combined strike with long-range precision weapons was launched today".
The ministry said it had targeted an office of the SBU security service and a defence industry site, and that "all the targets have been struck".

Putin at a press conference on Thursday had suggested a "high-tech duel" over Kyiv to test his claims that Russia's new hypersonic ballistic missile, dubbed Oreshnik, is impervious to air defences.
"Let them set some target to be hit, let's say in Kyiv," he said.
"They will concentrate there all their air defences. And we will launch an Oreshnik strike there and see what happens."
Zelensky hit back, saying: "People are dying and he thinks it's 'interesting'... Dumbass."
Russian attacks also killed two people in Ukraine's southern city of Kherson Friday.
"Today Kherson woke up from numerous strikes of the Russian army. The occupants have created hell in the city," governor Oleksandr Prokudin said.
Prokudin also said shelling had left 60,000 homes without electricity in the Kherson region, which has been under daily strikes since Ukraine liberated the city in November 2022.
Russian forces were then pushed back to the other side of the Dnipro river, putting Kherson well within reach of Russian artillery stationed on the opposite bank.
A Russian sabotage group tried but failed to cross the Dnipro during the shelling of Kherson, spokesman for the Southern Defence Forces Vladyslav Voloshyn told state-run Suspilne media.
Russian troops are on the offensive again, especially in the eastern Donbas region, where they captured two small villages near the city of Pokrovsk.

Russia planning new attack on Kyiv with 200,000 fresh troops, says Ukraine

"The Russians are preparing some 200,000 fresh troops. I have no doubt they will have another go at Kyiv," he said in the interview.

The commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces expects a new Russian attack on Kyiv in the early months of 2023, according to an interview with The Economist released Thursday.
Much of the fighting has been concentrated in the east and south recently but General Valeriy Zaluzhny told the British weekly the capital would be targeted again.
A "very important strategic task is to create reserves and prepare for the war which may take place in February, at best in March, and at worst at the end of January," he said in a December 3 interview released on Thursday.
"The Russians are preparing some 200,000 fresh troops. I have no doubt they will have another go at Kyiv," he said in the interview.
"We have made all the calculations -- how many tanks, artillery we need and so on and so on."

At the end of February, Moscow sent its forces into Ukraine with the aim of swiftly capturing Kyiv.
In a victory for the Ukrainian army, the invaders were held up several dozen kilometres from the capital before pulling back from the region at the end of March and early April.
The general said among his current problems was "to hold this (front)line", which runs south to east, "and not lose any more ground" after pushing back the Russians from the Kharkiv region in the northeast in September and Kherson in the south last month.
For Zaluzhny, the Russians have bombarded energy infrastructure since October following a series of humiliating battlefield reverses because "they need time to gather resources" for a broad offensive in the coming months.
"I am not an energy expert but it seems to me we are on the edge," he said, stating that the destruction of the power grid was "possible" by missile and drone strikes.
The waves of attacks on the power network that have already taken place have caused massive power outages across the country, leaving millions of Ukrainians in the bitter cold and dark of winter.
"I know that I can beat this enemy," the general continued. "But I need resources.
"I need 300 tanks, 600-700 ifvs (infantry fighting vehicles) 500 Howitzers."

Russia took aim Sunday at Western military supplies for Ukraine, launching airstrikes on Kyiv that it claimed destroyed tanks donated from abroad, as Vladimir Putin warned that any Western deliveries of longer-range rocket systems would prompt Moscow to hit “objects that we haven't yet struck.” The Russian leader's cryptic threat of military escalation did not specify what the new targets might be.
It came days after the United States announced plans to deliver $700 million of security assistance for Ukraine that includes four precision-guided, medium-range rocket systems, as well as helicopters, Javelin anti-tank systems, radars, tactical vehicles and more.
Military analysts say Russia hopes to overrun Ukraine's embattled eastern industrial Donbas region, where Russia-backed separatists have fought the Ukrainian government since 2014, before the arrival of any U.S. weapons that might turn the tide.
The Pentagon said last week that it will take at least three weeks to get the U.S. weapons onto the battlefield.
Ukraine said the missiles aimed at the capital hit a train repair shop. Elsewhere, Russian airstrikes in the eastern city of Druzhkivka destroyed buildings and left at least one person dead, a Ukrainian official said. Residents described waking to the sound of missile strikes, with rubble and glass falling down around them.
“It was like in a horror movie,” Svitlana Romashkina said.
The Russian Defense Ministry said air-launched precision missiles were used to destroy workshops in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, including in Druzhkivka, that were repairing damaged Ukrainian military equipment.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's General Staff said Russian forces fired five X-22 cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea toward Kyiv, and one was destroyed by air defenses. Four other missiles hit “infrastructure facilities,” but Ukraine said there were no casualties.
Nuclear plant operator Energoatom said one cruise missile buzzed close to the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear plant, 350 kilometers to the south, seemingly on its way to Kyiv. It warned of the possibility of a nuclear catastrophe if even one missile fragment had hit the facility.
The missiles that struck Kyiv destroyed T-72 tanks supplied by Eastern European countries and other armored vehicles, the Russian Defense Ministry said on the Telegram app.
Ukraine's railway authority subsequently led reporters on a guided tour of a rail car repair plant in eastern Kyiv that it said was hit by four missiles. The authority said no military equipment had been stored there, and Associated Press reporters saw no remnants of any in the facility's destroyed building.
“There were no tanks, and you can just be witness to this.” said Serhiy Leshchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian president's office.
However, a government adviser said on national TV that military infrastructure also was targeted. AP reporters saw a building burning in an area near the destroyed rail car plant.
Two residents of that district said the warehouse-type structure that billowed smoke was part of a tank-repair facility. Police blocking access to the site told an AP reporter that military authorities had banned the taking of images there.
In a television interview that aired Sunday, Putin lashed out at Western deliveries of weapons to Ukraine, saying they aim to prolong the war.
“All this fuss around additional deliveries of weapons, in my opinion, has only one goal: to drag out the armed conflict as much as possible,” Putin said. He insisted such supplies were unlikely to change the military situation for Ukraine's government, which he said was merely making up for losses of similar rockets.
If Kyiv gets longer-range rockets, he added, Moscow will “draw appropriate conclusions and use our means of destruction, which we have plenty of, in order to strike at those objects that we haven't yet struck.” The U.S. has stopped short of offering Ukraine longer-range weapons that could fire deep into Russia.
But the four medium-range High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems in the security package include launchers on wheels that allow troops to strike a target and then quickly move away — which could be useful against Russian artillery on the battlefield.
The Spanish daily El Pais reported Sunday that Spain planned to supply anti-aircraft missiles and up to 40 Leopard 2 A4 battle tanks to Ukraine. Spain's Ministry of Defense did not comment on the report.
Before Sunday's early morning attack, Kyiv had not faced any such Russian airstrikes since the April 28 visit of U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres.
The attack triggered air-raid alarms and showed that Russia still had the capability and willingness to hit at Ukraine's heart, despite refocusing its efforts to capture Ukrainian territory in the east.
In recent days, Russian forces have focused on capturing Ukraine's eastern cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk.
On Sunday they continued their push, with missile and airstrikes on cities and villages in the Donbas.
In the cities of Sloviansk and Bakhmut, cars and military vehicles were seen speeding into town from the direction of the front line. In remarks carried by Ukraine's Unian news agency, Petro Andriushchenko said Russian authorities controlling the city have imposed a quarantine.
He did not describe what measures Russian authorities had included, and his report could not be independently confirmed.
World Health Organization officials warned last month about the threat of cholera and other infectious diseases in Mariupol.
Also Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to the Zaporizhzhia region in the southeast, which is partly under Russian control.
He received a battle report, thanked troops and met with refugees in what was only his second public visit outside the Kyiv area since the war began.
Far from the battlefield, Ukraine's national soccer players missed out on qualifying for a World Cup spot, losing 1-0 to Wales in an emotionally charged match in Cardiff. Back home, some Ukrainians gathered in bars to watch the game.

It came days after the United States announced plans to deliver $700 million of security assistance for Ukraine that includes four precision-guided, medium-range rocket systems, as well as helicopters, Javelin anti-tank systems, radars, tactical vehicles and more.
Military analysts say Russia hopes to overrun Ukraine's embattled eastern industrial Donbas region, where Russia-backed separatists have fought the Ukrainian government since 2014, before the arrival of any U.S. weapons that might turn the tide.
The Pentagon said last week that it will take at least three weeks to get the U.S. weapons onto the battlefield.

Nuclear plant operator Energoatom said one cruise missile buzzed close to the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear plant, 350 kilometers to the south, seemingly on its way to Kyiv. It warned of the possibility of a nuclear catastrophe if even one missile fragment had hit the facility.
The missiles that struck Kyiv destroyed T-72 tanks supplied by Eastern European countries and other armored vehicles, the Russian Defense Ministry said on the Telegram app.
Ukraine's railway authority subsequently led reporters on a guided tour of a rail car repair plant in eastern Kyiv that it said was hit by four missiles. The authority said no military equipment had been stored there, and Associated Press reporters saw no remnants of any in the facility's destroyed building.
&ldquo;There were no tanks, and you can just be witness to this.&rdquo; said Serhiy Leshchenko, an adviser to the Ukrainian president's office.
However, a government adviser said on national TV that military infrastructure also was targeted. AP reporters saw a building burning in an area near the destroyed rail car plant.
Two residents of that district said the warehouse-type structure that billowed smoke was part of a tank-repair facility. Police blocking access to the site told an AP reporter that military authorities had banned the taking of images there.
In a television interview that aired Sunday, Putin lashed out at Western deliveries of weapons to Ukraine, saying they aim to prolong the war.
&ldquo;All this fuss around additional deliveries of weapons, in my opinion, has only one goal: to drag out the armed conflict as much as possible,&rdquo; Putin said. He insisted such supplies were unlikely to change the military situation for Ukraine's government, which he said was merely making up for losses of similar rockets.
If Kyiv gets longer-range rockets, he added, Moscow will &ldquo;draw appropriate conclusions and use our means of destruction, which we have plenty of, in order to strike at those objects that we haven't yet struck.&rdquo; The U.S. has stopped short of offering Ukraine longer-range weapons that could fire deep into Russia.
But the four medium-range High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems in the security package include launchers on wheels that allow troops to strike a target and then quickly move away &mdash; which could be useful against Russian artillery on the battlefield.
The Spanish daily El Pais reported Sunday that Spain planned to supply anti-aircraft missiles and up to 40 Leopard 2 A4 battle tanks to Ukraine. Spain's Ministry of Defense did not comment on the report.
Before Sunday's early morning attack, Kyiv had not faced any such Russian airstrikes since the April 28 visit of U.N. Secretary-General Ant&oacute;nio Guterres.
