Kuno National Park saw the birth of 5 cubs on Sunday, India's Environmental minister announced.

&nbsp;Cheetah 'Gamini' on Sunday gave birth to five cubs in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, taking the total number of the big cats in the country to 26, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav said.
Taking to social media platform X, the Union Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change said, "High Five, Kuno! Female cheetah Gamini, aged about 5 years, brought from Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, South Africa, has given birth to 5 cubs today." The number of cheetah cubs born in India now stands at 13, the minister added.
This is the fourth cheetah litter on Indian soil and the first litter of cheetahs brought from South Africa, Yadav informed.
"Congratulations to all, especially the team of forest officers, vets, and field staff who have ensured a stress-free environment for cheetahs, which has led to successful mating and birth of the cubs. The total number of cheetahs, including cubs in Kuno National Park, is 26. Gamini's legacy leaps forward: Introducing her adorable cubs," the Union Minister stated.
Under the ambitious cheetah reintroduction project, eight Namibian cheetahs, comprising five females and three males, were released into enclosures at KNP on September 17 in 2022.
In February 2023, another 12 cheetahs were brought to the park from South Africa. Gamini is part of the group brought from South Africa.

Namibian Cheetah, Jwala, has recently given birth to three cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav shared a video on X in which the newborn cubs were seen.&nbsp;
Yadav shared the video with a caption, that read, "Kuno's new cubs! A Namibian Cheetah named Jwala has given birth to three cubs. This comes just weeks after Namibian Cheetah Aasha gave birth to her cubs. Congratulations to all wildlife frontline warriors and wildlife lovers across the country. May Bharat's wildlife thrive."
The news of Jwala giving birth to three cubs came weeks after another cheetah, Aasha, gave birth to her cubs.
Cheetahs were earlier declared extinct in India in 1952. Later, they were reintroduced through the ambitious Project Cheetah in 2022.&nbsp;
For this project, eight Cheetahs were brought from Namibia. Subsequently, twelve cheetahs from South Africa were also translocated and released in Kuno National Park in February 2023.

According to the forest officials, 4-year-old male cheetah is suspected to have died on infighting.

According to the forest officials, the 4-year-old male cheetah is suspected to have died on infighting.

One more African cheetah died in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park (KNP) on Tuesday, a senior forest department official said.
The male cheetah, Tejas, was brought to KNP in Sheopur district from South Africa in February this year.
&ldquo;Cheetah Tejas, aged around four years, died in KNP due to suspected infighting,&rdquo; Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Wildlife J S Chauhan told PTI.
The feline, brought from South Africa as part of the ambitious cheetah reintroduction programme, was in an enclosure at the time of the incident, the official said.

Kuno Park: cheetahs from Namibia clash with cheetahs from South Africa, one wounded

Five female and three male cheetahs brought from Namibia were released into enclosures at the KNP at an event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2022, as part of an effort to revive the extinct cheetah population in the wild in India.

A translocated African cheetah has sustained injuries in a fight with others at the Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district, an official said on Tuesday.
Agni, the injured cheetah, was undergoing treatment and in good health, said divisional forest official P K Verma.
Cheetahs Gaurav and Shaurya, translocated from Namibia, got into a fight with Agni and Vayu (who were brought from South Africa) around 6 PM on Monday in the free range area of KNP, he said.
Officials sounded sirens and burst crackers in a bid to break up the fight, Verma said.
Agni was then tranquilized and doctors are treating it, he said, adding that it was in good health and such fights are a normal occurrence.
Another 12 cheetahs were brought from South Africa in February 2023.
Six cheetahs, including three of the four cubs born in the park, have died since March.&nbsp;

A Cheetah tracking team of Kuno National Park was attacked by a group of villagers in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district on Friday. 

The team was tracing a cheetah named Asha who had moved out of the protected area when a group of villagers confronted them.&nbsp;

A South African cheetah died in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park on Sunday. This is the second cheetah to have died after being translocated to India.
The six-year-old big cat was one of 12 Cheetahs flown into India in February this year. As per a press release by the forest department, Uday appeared lethargic and was limping during the daily check-up.
The feline was tranquilised and administered the first round of treatment however, Uday died hours later. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

Several experts have suggested that elephants seem to scare predators more often because of their giant-size/intimidating size. So the probability to shoo the leopards at Kuno Park too is very high.
It reposes faith that the freshly imported Namibian cheetahs at Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park are certainly in safe hands. 
Given the elephants' natural tendency to intimidate, the park authorities have deployed two elephants to chase away leopards from cheetah enclosures.
These elephants were brought in at the park in August this year. They were released in the enclosure which houses the eight cheetahs who are currently undergoing their acclimatization phase.
As per forest officials, these trained elephants will be  used for a variety of tasks, including encircling animals for tranquilization, driving away invasive animals, spotting amid monsoon and overgrown thicket.
The elephants made their way to the MP Park after an 800-kilometre long truck journey from Sitapur Tiger Reserve.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release cheetahs being brought from Namibia in Madhya Pradesh's Kuno National Park on Saturday morning, an official said on Friday.
He will arrive at the Gwalior airport from New Delhi at around 9.20 am and leave for Kuno National Park (KNP) in Sheopur district, about 165km away, where he will release cheetahs into quarantine enclosures at around 10.45 am, the official said.
The special cargo plane carrying eight cheetahs from Namibia will land at the Gwalior airport in Madhya Pradesh at around 6 am on September 17, which is also Modi's birthday, said a senior police official.
The felines will be then shifted to KNP in a helicopter.
As per the earlier plan, the special plane carrying the big cats from the African country was to land at the Jaipur airport, from where they were to be flown to KNP, around 400km from the Rajasthan capital.
The release of wild cheetahs by the prime minister in KNP is part of his efforts to revitalise and diversify India’s wildlife and its habitat, said a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Thursday.
The introduction of the fastest land animal in India is being done under Project Cheetah, which is world's first inter-continental large wild carnivore translocation project, the statement said.
Cheetahs will help in the restoration of open forest and grassland ecosystems in India. This will help conserve biodiversity and enhance ecosystem services like water security, carbon sequestration and soil moisture conservation, benefiting the society at large, it said.
After releasing cheetahs, Modi will take part in a plantation programme at Karahal in Sheopur district and later arrive in a local school to participate in a conference of women self-help groups (SHGs), said officials.
After the SHG programme, the PM will arrive in Gwalior and after a brief stay in the city, leave for New Delhi in the afternoon, they said.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minster released a glimpse of a cheetah arriving at KNP which sounds “Meow” on his Twitter handle.
“It is a matter of extreme happiness that cheetahs are coming to Kuno National Park. We the people of Madhya Pradesh are eager to welcome our new guests,” Chouhan said in a tweet.
