Kolkata Police imposes restrictions over 'input' on potential violent protests. More details

Kolkata Police Friday imposed section 144 of the IPC prohibiting any unlawful assembly of five or more persons for 60 days from May 28 to July 26 or until further order. As per CP Vineet Kumar Goyal, the development comes after information based on 'credible' sources indicated that 'violent demonstrations are likely to take place resulting in large-scale disturbances' of the public tranquillity and breach of the peace.
The order said breach of the peace in the area falls under Bowbazar Police Station, Hare Street Police Station and Headquarters Traffic Guard which is from K.C. Das Crossing towards Victoria House (C.E.S.C. Head Office) and its vicinity excluding Bentick Street".
The Police as per the order have implemented Section 144 Cr PC order in the vicinity of Dalhousie and Victoria House. In a social media post on X (previously Twitter), it said the restrictions are not new and had been imposed from time to time, urging people to refrain from spreading misleading information.

Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday said the directive was issued to all bars in the city to prevent drunk driving.
"Drunk driving is a legal offence. It's the reason for several road accidents. We have already sent a directive to all the bars in the city to purchase breathalysers to test every person leaving the bar after drinking. The bars must not allow them to drive back home in case they are found intoxicated beyond a certain level," he said.
If a person is found to be drinking excessively, the bars must ensure that he is not driving or riding a bike, Goyal said.
"The bar will arrange for the person to reach home by other means. If necessary, they can also take the help of the police," he added.
The bars would give slips to those undergoing the tests, and these slips can be shown at checkpoints to prevent further tests, the officer said.
Deaths due to road accidents in Kolkata have reduced from 450 in 2016 to 185 in 2022, he said.
Goyal was speaking at a session on 'Kolkata -- Safety and Security -- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow', organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce.
Joint Commissioner (Crime) Murli Dhar, Joint Commissioner (Intelligence) Kalyan Mukhopadhyay, Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) SK Yadav and Deputy Commissioner (South East Division) Sudeep Sarkar also attended the programme.

The Kolkata Police has also decided to install 3,000 more CCTV cameras across the city, including the narrow lanes, Goyal said.
Expressing concern over the rising number of cyber crimes, he said every police station in the city will have at least four trained police personnel to deal with such incidents.
"Already 3,000 police personnel have been trained in this regard, while another 2,000 are undergoing training," he said.
Referring to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) data, Murli Dhar said crimes against women were lowest in Kolkata among the 19 metros in India in 2021.
"To strengthen the safety of women, 50 bikes will be kept at various police stations in the city to reach a spot quickly,"

Rawal had taken up the subject of gas cylinder prices at the BJP rally in Gujarat's Valsad earlier this month where he took a "cook fish for Bengalis" jibe seemingly at Rohingya migrants.
"Gas cylinders are expensive, but their price will come down. People will get employment too. But what will happen if Rohingya migrants and Bangladeshis start living around you, like in Delhi? "What will you do with gas cylinders? Cook fish for the Bengalis?" the former BJP MP had said.
He was booked under various sections of the IPC after CPI(M) leader and the party's state secretary Mohammed Salim lodged a complaint against him, alleging that the actor's utterances tantamounted to hate speech, which could promote feelings of hatred against Bengalis.
Rawal, however, apologised for his comments following a huge backlash on social media.&nbsp;

CPI(M) MP Md Salim in his complaint said he came across a video on various social media platforms featuring Paresh Rawal giving a speech that could promote feelings of hatred against Bengalis.

The Kolkata Police has booked actor Paresh Rawal under different sections of the IPC on a complaint filed by CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim, who alleged that he delivered "hate speech" against the Bengali community during an election rally of the BJP in Gujarat.
A case has been registered against Rawal under IPC sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 153B (propagates denial of rights to linguistic or racial groups), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 505 (statements intending public mischief), police said in a communication to Salim.
Salim in his complaint to the Taltala police station on Thursday said he came across a video on various social media platforms featuring the actor giving a speech that could promote feelings of hatred against Bengalis.
Seeking the actor's prosecution, Salim claimed that Rawal had made an unsavoury reference to Bengalis linking gas cylinders with Bangladeshis, Rohingyas, Bengalis and fish.
Rawal apologised on Friday following a huge backlash on the social media over his comments.
"Of course, the fish is not the issue as Gujaratis do cook and eat fish. But let me clarify by Bengali I meant illegal Bangladeshi N Rohingya. But still if I have hurt your feelings and sentiments I do apologise," the 67-year-old actor and former BJP MP wrote on Twitter.
Rawal had taken up the issue of gas cylinder prices, an emotive poll issue, at a BJP rally in Valsad district on Tuesday.
"Gas cylinders are expensive, but their price will come down. People will get employment too. But what will happen if Rohingya migrants and Bangladeshis start living around you, like in Delhi? ... What will you do with gas cylinders? Cook fish for the Bengalis?" Rawal had said.

Kolkata Police on Monday began probe into a complaint by TMC MP&nbsp;Nusrat&nbsp;Jahan who accused a dating app of using her picture without her consent.&nbsp;The popular Bengali actor&nbsp;shared the screenshot&nbsp;of her picture which was used by the video dating app. Tagging the police commissioner in her tweet, the Lok&nbsp;Sabha&nbsp;MP wrote it was totally unacceptable and she was ready to take it up legally.&nbsp;Police said they have started a probe and action will be taken against the owners of the app according to the law.&nbsp;
