Three people were injured Saturday in a knife attack at Paris's Gare de Lyon railway station, a major travel hub, police said, adding that a suspect had been arrested.
The detained man, a Malian national, went on a stabbing spree at around 8:00 am (0700 GMT) at the station, which operates domestic trains as well as those heading to Switzerland and Italy.
One person suffered serious injuries to the abdomen while two others were lightly wounded, police said.
"The suspect did not cry out (any religious slogans) during his attack," a police source said. "He presented the police an Italian driving licence", which gave his date of birth as January 1, 1992.
Passers-by overpowered the man before railway police arrived on the scene, the police source said.
"A thank you to those who overpowered the man who carried out this unbearable act," said Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin on X, formerly Twitter.
The attackers' motives remained unclear.
The Paris prosecutor's office launched an inquiry into the attack, while the national anti-terrorist prosecutor said it was observing proceedings at this stage.
The assault took place less than six months before Paris hosts the 2024 Olympics and and an expected 15 million visitors.
Each year more than 100 million passengers go through the Gare de Lyon, France's biggest mainline hub.
The area between halls one and three were temporarily inaccessible, rail operator SNCF said on X, formerly Twitter.
Services to the Paris region were delayed, the SNCF said, referring only to "an act of criminal intent".

The CCTV footage shared by news agency ANI show, a woman trying to fight off the miscreants as one of them is holding a sharp weapon in one hand up in the air. The woman is thrown to the ground during the scuffle.&nbsp;
The miscreant with a knife rushes towards the woman and pulls the weapon to her throat, apparently threatening her.&nbsp;
Both men are then seen snatching away things from her and running away.&nbsp;
Police have registered a robbery case on the basis of CCTV footage and further probe is underway, ANI reported.

The incident of attempted snatching came to light after a purported video of the episode surfaced on social media, they said.
A juvenile, a resident of Badarpur, has been apprehended in connection with the incident, police said.
In the clip, the woman can be seen fighting off the man trying to snatch her mobile phone. She caught hold of the person by his T-shirt and the phone fell to the ground. The miscreant then fled the scene.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Esha Pandey said a call about the incident was received around 11.30 pm on September 4.
The woman, a resident of Tikri, was visiting her friend at Tajpur Pahari. She showed bravery and fought off the man, Pandey said.
An FIR under sections 379 (theft), 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) was registered at the Badarpur police station, she said.
"During the course of investigation, a juvenile has been apprehended. He will be produced before Juvenile Justice Board on Friday. The boy will be handed over to his parents after completion of all the legal formalities," she added.

A man wounded four people in a stabbing rampage stopped by bystanders who brought him to the ground in a New Zealand city neighborhood Thursday, police said.
Police District Commander Naila Hassan said the attack in Auckland was random and the suspect was in custody. She said there was no indication the attack was a hate crime, as the victims were of different genders, ethnicities and ages.
“This was an extremely fast-moving incident, where our police staff responded quickly, apprehended the offender and prevented further harm to our communities,” Hassan said.
She said the victims all suffered moderate injuries.
People in the neighborhood began following and surrounding the man after he began his attack and one brought him down using a walking crutch, Hassan said.
“Members of the public that acted with extreme bravery,” she said.
She said the man had been carrying a large knife and suffered moderate injuries when he was apprehended, and had been hospitalized as a result.
