With the appointment of Justices Rajesh Bindal and Aravind Kumar after 5 appointments a week ago, the Supreme Court reached its full strength of 34 judges.
The Supreme Court collegium recommended the names of the two new judges on 31 January 2023.
"As per the provisions under the Constitution of India, the Hon&rsquo;ble President of India has appointed the following Chief Justices of High Courts as Judges of the Supreme Court. Amid protests in Sikkim over the Supreme Court's observations regarding the Sikkimese Nepali community, the Narendra Modi government has said that it will file a review petition in the apex court.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on 5 February 2023 said that the central government stands with the people of Sikkim, and so, will file a petition in support of the one submitted by the state government.
Rijiju clarified that the Supreme Court judgment does not dilute Article 371F of the Constitution concerning Sikkim, and "has nothing to do with anyone's citizenship". "We value the Constitutional status of every genuine Indian and (it) will be protected at any cost," he said.
Protests broke out in the state after the top court reportedly referred to Sikkimese Nepalis as "immigrants". The Supreme Court reportedly mentioned the Sikkimese Nepali community as immigrants in an observation on January 13 while extending income tax exemption to all old settlers of the state.

Amid the ongoing tussle between the government and the Supreme Court, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju took a fresh swipe at the top court following a media report on the 'very serious warning' by it.
Speaking at a public event in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on Saturday, Rijiju said "The Indian Constitution is our guide. No one can give a warning to anyone". He added, "Public is the Maalik of this country and we are the servants. We all are here for service.

Five judges were appointed to the Supreme Court on Saturday with the Centre clearing the names recommended by the Collegium on December 13 last year.
Law Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted to announce the appointment of Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court; Justice Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice, Patna High Court; Justice P V Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice, Manipur High Court; Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah of Patna High Court; and Justice Manoj Misra of Allahabad High Court as apex court judges.
Once they take oath early next week, the strength of the apex court will go up to 32 judges.
At present the top court is functioning with 27 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. Its sanctioned strength, including the CJI, is 34.
Their appointments come amidst strong observations by a Supreme Court bench questioning the delay on part of the government in appointing and transferring judges based on the recommendations of the SC Collegium.

A senior government functionary said the five appointments have nothing to do with the bench's observation and were made after the Cente took a considered decision.
The appointments came in due course, he added.&nbsp;

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on Monday took note of the submissions of lawyer M L Sharma and senior advocate C U Singh, appearing for N Ram and Bhushan, seeking urgent listing of their separate PILs on the issue.

Comprehensive consultations with stakeholders must for electoral reforms: Kiren Rijiju

Earlier this month, the Election Commission had held consultations with recognised political parties on this matter.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday said comprehensive consultations with stakeholders, including political parties, are essential for implementing electoral reforms.
His remarks came against the backdrop of a fresh push by the poll panel for electoral reforms, including the use of remote voting technology to allow migrant voters to exercise their franchise without going to their home states.
Earlier this month, the Election Commission had held consultations with recognised political parties on this matter.
Referring to various proposals on electoral reforms moved by the EC, he said consultations and discussions are "symbols" of a vibrant democracy.
Rijiju said the changes made in election laws a year ago have resulted in addition of over 1.5 crore new voters to the electoral list.

Four cut-off dates instead of the one earlier have helped young eligible citizens to register as voters once they turn 18, he said.
The minister also lauded the move to allow those above 17 years of age to register with the EC in advance. Once they turn 18, their names are added to the voters' list.
Addressing the 13th National Voters' Day event here in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, companion election commissioners and representatives of various political parties, Rijiju recalled the role of various unsung heroes who have not been awarded but have made sacrifices while helping hold free and fair polls.
On the issue of electoral reforms, the minister said he is in constant touch with the Election Commission and has been holding meetings with officials of the poll panel on the issue.
The Legislative Department in the Union law ministry is the nodal agency for issues related to the poll panel, including election laws and related rules.

&nbsp;Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Sunday sought to support the views of a retired high court judge, who said the Supreme Court "hijacked" the Constitution by deciding to appoint judges itself.
The government and the judiciary have been at loggerheads over the process of appointment of judges to the higher judiciary, Rijiju shared the video of an interview of Justice R S Sodhi (retd), a former judge of the Delhi Court, saying it is "voice of a judge" and that majority of people have similar "sane views".
Justice Sodhi said the right to frame laws lies with Parliament.
The law minister also said that "actually majority of the people have similar sane views. It's only those people who disregard the provisions of the Constitution and mandate of the people think that they are above the Constitution of India." "Real beauty of Indian Democracy is its success. People rule themselves through their representatives.Elected representatives represent the interests of the People &nbsp;&amp; make laws. Our Judiciary is independent and our Constitution is Supreme," the minister tweeted.

"... Whether you can amend the Constitution? Only Parliament will amend Constitution. But here I feel the Supreme Court for the first time 'hijacked' the Constitution. Minister Kiren Rijiju has suggested to CJI DY Chandrachud that government representatives be included in the Supreme Court collegium that decides names for higher judiciary.

The continuing tussle between the Union government and the Supreme Court over appointment of judges came up in the Parliament on 22 December 2022.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju informed the Rajya Sabha that the government has been receiving representations from many sources alleging lack of transparency, objectivity and social diversity in the collegium system which appoints Supreme Court and High Court judges.
He added that as on 16 December 2022, the Supreme Court had 6 vacancies, and the High Courts had 333 vacancies.

"While every effort is made to fill up the existing vacancies expeditiously, vacancies of judges in high courts do keep on arising on account of retirement, resignation or elevation of judges and also due to increase in the strength of judges," Rijiju said.
Amid a standoff between the government and the Supreme Court Collegium over the appointment of judges, a parliamentary panel had recently asked the Executive and the Judiciary to come up with an &ldquo;out of box thinking&rdquo; to deal with the &ldquo;perennial problem&rdquo; of vacancies in high courts.
The committee also said that it is &ldquo;surprised&rdquo; to note that the Supreme Court and the government have failed to reach at a consensus on revision of the Memorandum of Procedure for appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and the high courts, though the same is under consideration of both for &ldquo;about seven years now&rdquo;.

Stressing that work cannot continue under the present condition, Ramana urged the Law Minister to make sure the proposal to set up the National Judicial Infrastructure Authority is taken up in the winter session of parliament.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and seniors ministers in the Maharashtra government used a track for athletes as a parking lot during a meeting in Pune. VVIP cars were parked on the track at Pune's Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex. Reacting to the photographs, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said they made him sad. "I'm personally very sad to see such disrespect for sports and sporting ethics in our country," Rijiju tweeted.
Sports Commissioner of Maharashtra Om Prakash Bakoria told ANI that since Sharad Pawar had some issue with his leg, only his vehicle was allowed to be parked on the cemented track. But others also parked their car there. He apologised for the incident.
According to ANI, the ministers did not want to use the elevators to reach the second floor of the sports complex which houses a meeting room. To avoid the inconvenience, the ministers decided to take their cars up to the second floor of the complex and parked them on the athletic track.

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and seniors ministers in the Maharashtra government used a track for athletes as a parking lot during a meeting in Pune. VVIP cars were parked on the track at Pune's Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex. Reacting to the photographs, Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju said they made him sad. "I'm personally very sad to see such disrespect for sports and sporting ethics in our country," Rijiju tweeted.
Sports Commissioner of Maharashtra Om Prakash Bakoria told ANI that since Sharad Pawar had some issue with his leg, only his vehicle was allowed to be parked on the cemented track. But others also parked their car there. He apologised for the incident.
According to ANI, the ministers did not want to use the elevators to reach the second floor of the sports complex which houses a meeting room. To avoid the inconvenience, the ministers decided to take their cars up to the second floor of the complex and parked them on the athletic track.

Law minister Kiren Rijiju escaped unhurt after the vehicle he was travelling in met with an accident in Kashmir's Banihal district on Saturday as per reports.&nbsp;
Rijiju was travelling in a bulletproof vehicle when a fully-loaded truck smashed it from the side damaging the vehicle on the highway.&nbsp;
