After making an impressive debut with &lsquo;Dhobi Ghat&rsquo;, Kiran Rao returned to director&rsquo;s seat with &lsquo;Laapataa Ladies&rsquo;. The film didn&rsquo;t work well in theatres but saw a flurry of positive reactions and love from audience upon its Netflix release. In a recent interview, the filmmaker said that the film was a failure at the box office. &nbsp;
&ldquo;By box office metrics, we weren&rsquo;t a success. In the conventional sense, we didn&rsquo;t do hundreds of crores, or even Rs 30,40, 50 crore. Failure is the way to put it. I do feel responsible that the film didn&rsquo;t do that well at the box office,&rdquo; the filmmaker said. &nbsp;

Kiran Rao shed light on the long gap between her two films. She revealed that she has been working relentlessly for the last 10 years. She said, &ldquo;After my first film, I though my second film would come soon. But that soon just didn&rsquo;t come. It got me on a daily basis.&rdquo; &ldquo;I&rsquo;m sure most creative people have to face that sense of failure a lot when they don&rsquo;t achieve something soon enough or they don&rsquo;t achieve it at all,&rdquo; she added. &nbsp;

&lsquo;Laapataa Ladies&rsquo; stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastav, and Ravi Kishan in pivotal roles. The film is a joint production by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande, backed by Aamir Khan Productions, Jio Cinemas, and Kindling Pictures. Its global distribution rights were acquired by Yash Raj Films, and it is currently available for streaming on Netflix.&nbsp;

Kiran Rao has often openly discussed her relationship with former husband and Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan. The couple, who surprised many with their separation three years ago, continue to maintain a strong friendship and co-parent their son. They recently collaborated to direct and produce &lsquo;Laapataa Ladies&rsquo;, which received positive responses from critics as well as the audience.
In a recent interview on the Faye D&rsquo;Souza Show, Kiran opened up about the divorce, saying, &lsquo;I feel relationships need to be redefined from time to time because we change as human beings as we grow. We need different things, and this (divorce) is what I felt would make me happy and has made me very happy, honestly.&rsquo; She added that it is a &lsquo;very happy divorce.&rsquo;
Kiran Rao shared that before meeting Aamir Khan, she had been single for a long time and enjoyed her independence. She mentioned that while she had felt lonely before, she doesn't feel that way anymore because of her son, Azad.
&lsquo;I think loneliness is the main concern for most people when they get divorced or lose a partner. I haven't felt lonely at all. In fact, I am supported by both families, his and mine. So, actually, it's been only good stuff. It's been a very happy divorce,&rsquo; she said.
Kiran shared that she and Aamir &lsquo;took a while to get there emotionally and mentally.&rsquo; She said, &lsquo;We needed to be secure in the fact that we are not going anywhere, we are there for each other for the long term. It's just that we don't have to be married.&rsquo;
Kiran said she knew she would survive the divorce as she shared a strong relationship with Aamir as a co-parent to Azad and as a family. &lsquo;I felt secure that I would be able to have my independent, individual time to myself and my life ahead without losing, for instance, the love of a partner, the security, and comfort of knowing that Azad's dad is also my friend, is also my family,&rsquo; she said.
She emphasized that there is no love lost between her and Aamir. &lsquo;There's a lot of love, respect, shared history, shared laughs, shared ideology&mdash;many things we value in each other. I didn't want to lose that. When I was secure enough to say, 'We don't need the paper to say we're married, but we know what we mean to each other'... This is a partnership that will stand the test of time despite the divorce,&rsquo; Kiran explained.

Kiran Rao's path to filmmaking success began with roles as an assistant director, including on Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan.' Despite her experience, she found her earnings inadequate until she ventured into advertising, which provided the financial stability she sought.
During an episode of the podcast Cyrus Says, Kiran shared, &lsquo;I was essentially a gig worker. I&rsquo;d take on jobs as they came, working as long as they paid, then I&rsquo;d scramble to find the next, all while stressing about whether my savings would last and if I could cover my rent.&rsquo;
When the host mentioned her involvement in &lsquo;Lagaan&rsquo; and suggested it should have been financially rewarding, she explained, &lsquo;Feature films didn&rsquo;t pay. It was advertising that paid me the money to live in Mumbai. With Lagaan, the first AD system kind of started coming in.&rsquo;
Through her advertising jobs, she managed to purchase &lsquo;super expensive things&rsquo; like a computer and a car.
Kiran Rao shared an anecdote about buying her first car from her father for Rs 1 lakh, a unique arrangement that helped her save money. She fondly recalled driving it from Bangalore to Mumbai on the newly constructed expressway.
Reflecting on her challenging times as an AD on &lsquo;Lagaan&rsquo;, she added, &lsquo;I used to get coffee, get shouted at if anything went wrong. I was constantly being yelled at. Reema Kagti was a tough secondary AD; she would constantly be on my case. She did all the running around. We were just four ADs running around on a giant set. The film was shot with live sound, one of the first big films to do so. It was all outdoors, and we were far away from everything.&rsquo;
Kiran Rao's film &lsquo;Laapataa Ladies&rsquo; received critical acclaim. Set in the fictional state of Nirmal Pradesh in 2001, it follows the story of brides Phool and Pushpa, whose paths cross during a train journey. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Kiran Rao&rsquo;s Kindling Productions, the film recently completed a successful 50-day run at the box office and was screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Despite the film's lukewarm response at the box office, the social satire managed to win everyone's hearts with its refreshing storytelling. In a new interview, Kiran was asked if she has ever regretted pausing her career to raise her son Azad over the last 10 years. Responding to it, Rao revealed that she suffered many miscarriages before opting for surrogacy to have a child.&nbsp;
In her conversation with Zoom, Kiran revealed her struggles with fertility, highlighting her strong desire to have a child. Recalling the difficulties that she faced, including years of miscarriages and personal health issues, she mentioned that she had to opt for surrogacy. Despite the setbacks, Kiran was overjoyed to welcome her son, Azad. She called it one of the best experiences of her life and emphasised that she has no regrets about dedicating the past years to motherhood over filmmaking.
 &ldquo;The year that Dhobi Ghat was made was the year that Azad was born. And I had tried very hard to have a child. For five years, I had had a lot of miscarriages and a lot of personal and physical health issues. I was just finding it very hard to have a child. I was really keen to have a child, so when Azad was born, it was... I didn&rsquo;t have to make a decision. Obviously, all I wanted to do was raise my baby,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;I enjoyed having Azad so much. Those were some of the best years of my life. I&rsquo;ll never regret not having made a film in 10 years. I have no regrets because I enjoyed it thoroughly,&rdquo; she said in the interview.
Aamir Khan and Kiran welcomed Azad in 2011 via a surrogate. They are divorced now, and they co-parent Azad.

Filmmaker Kiran Rao, whose film &lsquo;Laapataa Ladies&rsquo; was screened at TIFF 2023 recently, spoke about the success some &lsquo;regressive&rsquo; movies have seen at the box office. In an interview with Film Companion, Kiran talked about the responsibility of a filmmaker to 'push the needle'.
Kiran Rao didn&rsquo;t name any movies but said that it &lsquo;hurts&rsquo; when bad movies make hundreds of crores at the box office. She said that it&rsquo;s not like all big movies are regressive, but it would be preferable if more of them had &lsquo;better messaging&rsquo;.
She said, &lsquo;So much has changed in terms of the market; the audience has so many options, and you&rsquo;re reaching for all kinds of attention when you&rsquo;re making a film. I suppose when it&rsquo;s really regressive sort of messaging, and it makes hundreds of crores, it hurts. Because you had the opportunity to push the needle in some direction and you didn&rsquo;t. Those are the things that sometimes bother me. Having said that, every filmmaker has their goals.&rsquo;
&lsquo;It would be really nice if the big films that do so well at the box office, were also doing &lsquo;the important work&rsquo; of spreading progressive messages&rsquo;, Kiran said.
She described this as, &lsquo;Building our society in a more positive way, not stereotyping people, in fact, breaking some of those regressive ideas down and in some way opening up conversations. Or at least, (offer) more sensitive portrayals.&rsquo;
A few days back, in an interview with the Free Press Journal, Naseeruddin Shah condemned movies like &lsquo;The Kerala Story&rsquo;, &lsquo;The Kashmir Files&rsquo;, and &lsquo;Gadar 2&rsquo; for their &lsquo;jingoism&rsquo;, and said that their success could cause harm.

We have a lot of respect and love for one another. But people don’t get this and I accept it because we don’t see it usually."
 
The Dangal actor also revealed that he and Kiran are always going to be by each other's side. They are working together but are no longer husband and wife."However, we are always going to be by each other’s side. We are working together. We live close by. But we are no longer husband and wife and that’s why we decided to call it quits”, Aamir told News 18 in the interview.
