A member of the banned CPI (Maoist), who was carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head, was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jharkhand's Latehar district on Monday, a senior police official said.
Another red rebel was arrested during the operation, he said.
The encounter between security forces and Maoists broke out early on Monday in a forest in Dauna area under the Netarhat Police Station limits, he said.
"Manish Yadav, who was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head, was killed in the gunfight with security forces. Another Maoist, Kundan Singh Kharwar, was arrested," Palamu DIG YS Ramesh told PTI.
Kundan, a zonal commander of the organisation, is carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head, Palamu IG Sunil Bhaskar said.
Two X-95 automatic rifles and ammunition were recovered from his possession.
Acting on a tip-off about the presence of Kundan and his squad in Dauna area, a team of security personnel, led by Latehar SP Kumar Gaurav, launched a search operation, a police statement said.
As soon as the Maoists spotted the security personnel around 1.30 am on Monday, they started firing and the team retaliated, the release said.
As Maoists felt that they could be overpowered by security personnel, the red rebels started fleeing the spot during which Kundan was caught with arms.
Later, the body of Manish was found during the search operation, the statement said.
&ldquo;Manish and Kundan have been active in CPI (Maoist) for the past 12 years. Manish was wanted in 40 cases, while Kundan in 27 cases in several police stations of Garhwa, Latehar and Chhatisgarh,&rdquo; Ramesh said.
Both of them were involved in several incidents, including an encounter on January 7, 2013 at Amwatikar Tola under the Barwadih Police Station limits, in which 10 police personnel were killed and 15 injured, he said.
Ramesh said the two red rebels were also involved in an attack on the patrolling party during parliamentary elections at Lukaiya More under the Chandwa Police Station limits on November 22, 2019, in which four police personnel had been killed.
The operation on Monday was conducted barely two days after two Maoists, including JJMP supremo Pappu Lohra, who was carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head, were killed in an anti-Naxal operation by security forces in the district.
On May 24, Lohra, the chief of the proscribed Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a Maoist splinter group, and his associate Prabhat Ganjhu, the sub-zonal commander of the organisation, were killed during the operation.
Ganjhu was carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head.
The joint operation was carried out by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jharkhand Police in the Ichabar forest area under the Latehar Police Station limits.
Lohra was wanted in 98 cases, including murder, extortion, and arson, across several districts such as Lohardaga, Gumla, Chatra, Palamu, and Latehar, while Ganjhu was wanted in 15 cases.
Both were allegedly involved in the killing of Jharkhand Jaguar deputy commandant Rajesh Kumar during an operation in September 2021.

27 Naxals neutralized in major Bastar operation

Security forces in Chhattisgarh have killed a top Maoist leader in a significant anti-Naxal operation, marking a major success.

In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against Naxalism, security forces in Chhattisgarh&rsquo;s Bastar region have killed Nambala Keshav Rao, widely known as Basavaraju, along with 26 other dreaded Maoists in a fierce encounter.
Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Basavaraju was considered the top leader and ideological backbone of the Naxal movement. His death marks a pivotal success in anti-Naxal operations.
In his early 70s, Basavaraju held a B.Tech degree and was known for orchestrating numerous deadly attacks on security forces. He carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore on his head in Chhattisgarh alone.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the security forces for their "remarkable success," while Union Home Minister Amit Shah called it a "landmark achievement" in the campaign to eradicate Naxalism.
The encounter began on Wednesday, two days after the launch of a coordinated anti-Maoist operation in the dense forests of Abhujmad&mdash;located at the tri-junction of Narayanpur, Bijapur, and Dantewada districts.
The operation was initiated based on intelligence inputs about the presence of top leaders from the CPI (Maoist) Central Committee, Politburo, and senior cadres of the Maad Division and the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA).
Security forces recovered 27 bodies and a significant cache of arms from the site. One jawan from the District Reserve Guard (DRG), part of the Chhattisgarh Police, was martyred in the operation, while a few others were injured.
Reacting to the development, the Prime Minister wrote on social media: "Proud of our forces for this remarkable success. Our Government is committed to eliminating the menace of Maoism and ensuring a life of peace and progress for our people." Home Minister Amit Shah emphasised the operation's importance, highlighting that it marked the first time in three decades that a Maoist leader of General Secretary rank had been neutralised.
"A landmark achievement in the battle to eliminate Naxalism. Today, in an operation in Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, our security forces have neutralised 27 dreaded Maoists, including Nambala Keshav Rao, alias Basavaraju," the home minister said.
Shah praised the bravery of security forces and further noted that since the completion of Operation Black Forest, 54 Naxalites have been arrested and 84 others have surrendered across Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Maharashtra.
He reiterated the government's goal to eliminate Naxalism by March 31, 2026.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also praised the forces.
"Jari hai vijay ka sankhnad, khatm ho raha naxalwad' (the victory cry continues, Naxalism is ending). Under the leadership of the successful Prime Minister Narendra Modi, security forces have been moving ahead rapidly to fulfil the resolve of Home Minister Amit Shah to end Naxalism in the country by March 2026, and continuously achieving success," he said.
Despite facing difficult geographical conditions and many other challenges, this decisive campaign against LWE is being carried out with full commitment and determination by the DRG unit of Chhattisgarh Police, he said while expressing condolences over the death of a DRG jawan.
Deputy CM Vijay Sharma, who also holds Home portfolio, wrote on X, "Our security forces have killed 27 dreaded Maoists, including CPI-Maoist General Secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias 'Basavaraju', during an operation in Narayanpur".
"With the strong determination of the Home Minister Amit Shah ji, our brave security forces have killed a Naxalite of General Secretary rank for the first time in 30 years. 'General Secretary' is the highest post among the Naxalites.
"All this is the result of the valour of our brave soldiers, many congratulations to them. Certainly, we will free the entire country, including Bastar, from Naxalism by March 2026," Sharma said.
Basavaraju, a native of Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh, had been a key figure in the Naxal movement since the 1970s.
He rose to the top leadership of CPI (Maoist) about seven years ago, around the time of a noticeable decline in Naxalite activity in Bastar. He was wanted in numerous major attacks against security forces in Chhattisgarh.
An alumnus of the country's one of premier technical institutes, the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, Basavaraju was known for his military expertise, particularly in training and explosives. He was recognised by various aliases, including Prakash, Krishna, Vijay, Umesh, and Kamlu.
Security agencies have speculated Basavaraju's age to be around 71, with only older photographs available for identification.
He carried a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head, announced by the Chhattisgarh government, with additional bounties announced in other states, including Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Telangana.
With this latest operation, a total of 200 Naxalites have been killed in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh this year, with 183 of those fatalities occurring in the Bastar division encompassing Bijapur, Narayanpur, Dantewada, and Kondagaon.

In response to increased terror activities, Kashmir's security forces intensified operations, neutralizing six terrorists in recent encounters.

After the April 22 Pahalgam attack, security forces turned the focus of their anti-terror operations to specific areas in south Kashmir and eliminated six terrorists in the past three days, officials said on Friday.
"The security agencies reviewed their strategy according to the situation in the wake of terror activities in the last one month and our intensified focus was on operations," said V K Birdi, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir.
The IGP was addressing a press conference with General Officer Commanding, Victor Force, Major General Dhananjay Joshi at the headquarters of the Victor Force here in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.
Birdi said that due to the intensified focus and coordination between various security agencies, two successful operations were conducted in which six terrorists were killed. He termed their elimination "significant achievements".
"These successful operations were possible because of the coordination and synergy among the security and intelligence agencies. We are duty-bound to end any terror activity in Kashmir and we are always ready to stop such acts," the IGP said.
The encounters took place in the Keller area of Shopian and the Nadar area of Tral in Pulwama on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. Three terrorists each were killed in the two operations.
Victor Force GOC Major Joshi said immediately after the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, the security forces designated several areas as focus areas.
"We had intelligence inputs that terrorists had moved to the higher reaches after the melting of snow. Keeping that in mind, our domination parties had continuously been deployed in the higher reaches, mountainous areas and forests," he said.
The security agencies received an intelligence input about the presence of terrorists in the Keller area of Shopian on the night of May 12, Major Joshi said.
"So the domination party that was deployed there for some time, relocated itself and in a focused way closed in on the area. They challenged the terrorists who fired at them, leading to an encounter in which three terrorists were neutralised," he said.
About the Tral encounter, the GoC said the operation took place in a different terrain.
"We had inputs and cordoned off the village. The terrorists took positions in different houses and fired. Our challenge was the safe evacuation of innocent civilians including children. Then systematically searches were conducted one by one in the houses and the three terrorists were neutralised in separate places," he added.
The successful conduct of both the operations shows that the security forces will find terrorists wherever they are and neutralise them, Major Joshi said.
Of the six slain terrorists, the main one was Shahid Kuttay, who was involved in major attacks. The attacks included one on a sarpanch in Heerpora, Shopian on May 18 last year and the firing incident at Danish Resort on April 8 last year in which two German tourists and a driver were injured, the officer said.
"Kuttay was also involved in fundraising and other activities," he added.
Neutralisation of both the modules has dealt a blow to terror outfits and will help in stopping terror activities here and bring peace, Maj Joshi said.&nbsp;

Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gauarv Toora said all the accused have been arrested from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.
The deceased was identified as Mohammed Wada Bala Yousif Ahmed, who was residing at a paying guest accommodation in Maheru Colony here. The injured, Ahmed Mohammed Nour, also a Sudanese national, has been hospitalised in Jalandhar, police said.
In his police complaint, Nour said he, along with Wada and three female friends, were performing morning prayers when the assailants started abusing them. Two of them were carrying knives.
Nour said one of the assailants allegedly demanded his sister's phone number. When they were told to stop misbehaving, the assailants stabbed Nour and Wada in the chest and fled.
A local resident, Prabhat Dubey, came to the injured students' help and took them to a hospital, where doctors declared Wada brought dead, police said.
In his complaint, Nour named the six assailants -- Abdul Ahad of Karnataka and Kunwar Amar Partap Singh, Aditya Garg, Mohammed Shoaib, Sushank Shaggy and Yash Vardhan Rajput, all residents of Maheru Colony.
Police said the accused were residing in a rented accommodation in Maheru village near the university.
Phagwara Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The troops of 209 Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) along with state police conducted the operation in which eight Naxals were killed and an AK series rifle, three INSAS rifles, a self-loading rifle (SLR), eight country-made guns and a pistol were seized, as per officials.
Those killed include central committee member of the extremist Prayag Manjhi alias Vivek, special area committee member Arvind Yadav alias Avinash, zonal committee member Sahebram Manjhi alias Rahul Manjhi, Mahesh Manjhi alias Mota, Talu, Ranju Manjhi, Gangaram and Mahesh.
Vivek carried a bounty of Rs 1 crore, Arvind Yadav had a reward of Rs 25 lakh and Sahebram Majhi of Rs 10 lakh. They were booked by the police in various cases of violence, the officials said.
The central committee is the top decision-making body of the Maoists organisation, they said.
No injuries have been reported among the security personnel, they said.
The CoBRA is the special jungle warfare unit of the CRPF.
The operation is part of the Union government's declaration of eliminating Naxalism from the country by March, 2026.
In another development, Vishnu Deo Sai, the chief minister of neighbouring Chhattisgarh, is expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his office in North Block in New Delhi on Monday evening for a comprehensive review of the anti-Naxal operations in his state and related subjects, officials said.
This year, more than 140 Maoists have been gunned down in separate encounters in Chhattisgarh, called by security officials as the "last bastion" for Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in the country.

After being alerted, forest and police officials reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem, the official said.
The victim&rsquo;s kin were provided an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000, while the remaining compensation of Rs 5.75 lakh will be given after completing necessary formalities, he added.
Human-elephant conflicts have been a major cause for concern in Chhattisgarh in the last decade, especially in the northern parts. The most-affected districts are Raigarh, Korba, Surajpur, Balrampur and Jashpur.
In Balrampur district, five persons have been killed in separate elephant attacks in the last three weeks.
According to forest officials, around 320 people have been killed in elephant attacks in the state in the last five years.

Ranka SDPO Rohit Ranjan Singh said the fire broke out around 12.30 pm, while crackers were being sold on a wooden platform in the shop.
"We took the injured to a nearby hospital in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, where doctors declared them dead," Singh said.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been ascertained, he added.
Meanwhile, Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident.
"Received the sad news about the death of five people due to a fire that broke out at a firecracker shop in Ranka block of Garhwa. May 'Marang Buru' (supreme tribal deity) grant peace to the departed souls and give strength to the bereaved family members to bear this loss," Soren posted on X.
He said the case is being investigated by the district administration.
"The incident of fire at a firecracker shop in Godarmana under Ranka police station area of Garhwa district and the deaths are heart-wrenching. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the speedy recovery of the injured," Gangwar said in another post on X.

The woman, identified as a 40-year-old Malayali nurse from Kottayam, and her six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter died after being discovered in their home in the town of Kettering

An Indian-origin woman and her two young children were found with serious injuries at their home in the Northampton region of eastern England.&nbsp;
Police officers were called to the residential property on Thursday morning and said that despite their best efforts and that of the paramedics, the woman died at the scene and the two children later died in the hospital.
The local police say they have launched a murder investigation.&nbsp;
The woman has been identified as a 40-year-old Malayali nurse from Kottayam with a six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter
A 52-year-old man, believed to be the woman's husband, has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident and remains in police custody. Northamptonshire Police said officers are not seeking anyone else in relation to the &ldquo;desperately sad&rdquo; case.

&ldquo;There are no words to describe how upsetting this incident is, but I want to reassure the public that we have a team of detectives working on the case, absolutely determined to get justice for this woman and the two children,&rdquo; said Superintendent Steve Freeman, Local Policing Area Commander for Northamptonshire Police.
&ldquo;We understand that the local community, and indeed many people across the country, will be shocked by this event. It is a desperately sad incident and I want to be absolutely clear on our unwavering commitment in establishing what has happened here and in seeking justice for this woman and these young children,&rdquo; he said.
He said the man they arrested is being questioned by detectives in custody and asked for anyone with any information to contact them.
Forensic post-mortem examinations to establish the cause of death will be taking place in the coming days after which the names of the victims will be formally released.
Locally, tributes have started pouring in for the nurse, who worked at Kettering General Hospital, and her children. Her husband reportedly worked at a hotel and the family is believed to have been in the UK for around a year or so.
&ldquo;All of us in Kettering find ourselves shocked by the news of the tragic deaths of three members of our community,&rdquo; said Councillor Keli Watts, Mayor of Kettering.
&ldquo;We all send our love and support to the friends and family of the victims and also to neighbours at Petherton Court. We all stand ready to support those affected,&rdquo; she said.
&ldquo;This is a tragic case and my thoughts are with the loved-ones of the victims at this time,&rdquo; added Councillor Jason Smithers, leader of local North Northants Council.&nbsp;

The identity of killed terrorists is yet to be acertained. 
Around 10 days ago, too, 2 terrorists were nuetralized by the cops after an encounter in the Nowgam area of Srinagar district, following a 'specific input' generated by Kashmir Police.
