Kerala faces widespread waterlogging and rising river levels after overnight downpour; IMD issues red alert in Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur amid dam safety warnings.

Overnight heavy rains caused waterlogging in roads and low-lying areas in many parts of Kerala and water levels of several rivers and dams in the state rose on Tuesday.
As the heavy rains continued in the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts for the day.
It also issued an orange alert in five other districts and a yellow alert in the remaining six districts for the day.
A red alert indicates an extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours, while an orange alert means very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm, and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.
Many dams operated for power generation and irrigation services in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Wayanad districts were at the 'third stage of alert' in view of the rise in their water levels.
In Kochi, a private taxi fell into an open canal alongside a road as the area was completely waterlogged due to the heavy rains. The driver was using a navigation tool and could not see the canal alongside the road, which was submerged in rainwater, police said.&nbsp;

The rains and subsequent flooding have caused some havoc in the state of Kerala.
As per India Today report, the latest example of the devastation can be seen in these visuals where a man is seen holding a bus tyre with one hand and his son with the other as strong currents of muddy water flow around them.
The father son duo was accidently caught and noticed when Jaison Joseph, conductor of a Kerala Road Transport Corporation bus, who was apparently filming the intensity of the rain, saw a man and a child covered in sludge, clinging to his bus tyre.Jaison immediately put the phone down, got off the bus and pulled the man and child inside. The man's wife who was also stuck at a nearby car was rescued after Jaison alerted others.
The father and son can be even seen standing inside bus covered in mud from head to toe after being rescued. The family was later identified as tourists from Gujarat.

Due to incessant rains a red alert has also been issued for 11 dams as water levels have breached the danger mark in several areas.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has appealed to the people to go to safer places in view of the high alert issued for 11 dams.
Chalakkudy river water levels will be hit after the Idduki dam gates are opened on Tuesday. &nbsp;The opening of the dam could affect Ernakulam district as well. A high alert has also been issued in Ernakulam and Idukki districts as well.
People living in low-lying areas are being evacuated. The state government has opened 247 camps for affected people across the state.
The pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple has been put on hold after two shutters of Kakki dam were opened, causing water levels in Pampa River to rise.
Meanwhile, the Kerala Public Service Commission has postponed exams scheduled to be held on October 21 and 23.
