Surya, who is also the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national president, staged protest at the Metro Station against the Metro fare hike, which has been increased from Re one to Rs five depending on the distance.
The hike has now been put on hold.
According to Surya, it happened after the Centre's intervention.&nbsp;
The MP staged demonstration with an empty trunk to convey that the state government's promises are empty trunk.&nbsp;
The protest was also in response to Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar's statement that Surya is an empty trunk who is more active on social media and not on the ground.
Speaking to PTI after being detained, Surya said, "Just because we are asking for affordable public transport and accountability, the government is forcing arrest and detention. It's shameful."&nbsp;
He said that instead of providing roads, infrastructure and better amenities, the state government is "arresting" him.&nbsp;
Speaking to reporters, he also said, "Metro fare hike has been put on hold for the second time due to pressure from the Union government. The state government should release a white paper on the economic situation."

Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot delivered only a two-line address to the legislature, triggering protests and sharp criticism from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who accused him of violating the Constitution and acting on the Centre&rsquo;s behalf.

Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot on Thursday confined his customary address to the state legislature to just two lines, prompting a strong response from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who accused the former of delivering his own speech rather than the government prepared one and also dubbed him a "puppet" of the Centre.
In the third governor vs government face-off in two days in three non-BJP ruled southern states, the others being Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Gehlot walked out after his short address to the Legislative Assembly and Council, amid protest by ruling Congress members who also attempted to gherao him.
The governor began the speech by greeting the CM, Assembly Speaker U T Khader, Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, Leaders of Opposition, ministers and members.
"I am happy to address one more joint session of the Karnataka legislature. My government is fully committed to double the speed of economic, social and physical development of the state. Jai Hind. Jai Karnataka," he said in Hindi, before proceeding out.
Congress members expressed strong displeasure over the governor walking away without reading the speech prepared by the government, and raised "Shame Shame" slogans on the floor of the House.
While seemingly defending the governor, BJP members shouted "Bharat Mata ki Jai".
Gehlot's action drew a sharp response from CM Siddaramaiah, who charged him with failing to deliver his constitutional responsibilities and duties.
As Gehlot was leaving, some Congress members including MLC B K Hariprasad tried to gherao him by shouting slogans. They were removed by the security staff.
Accusing the governor of reading his own speech instead of the one prepared by the state government, Siddaramaiah later alleged that the former did not stick to constitutional mandates.
The governor has violated the Constitution by not reading out the full speech prepared by the government, and acted like a "puppet" in the hands of the central government, he charged.
"Every new year, the governor has to address the joint session and he has to read the speech prepared by the state cabinet. That is constitutional. Because, Article 176 of the Constitution and Article 163 say he or she -- the Governor--shall read the speech prepared by the government or the cabinet," Siddaramaiah told reporters here.
"Today, instead of reading the speech prepared by the cabinet, he spoke the speech prepared by himself. This is against the provisions of the Indian Constitution. It clearly violates article 176 and 163. Therefore it is not going to be the speech of the Governor. He has not discharged his duties as per the Constitution. He has not discharged his responsibilities as prescribed by the Indian Constitution," the CM lashed out.
"Therefore, we are going to protest against the attitude of the governor. We are examining whether to approach the Supreme Court or not. We will let you know," he added.
Gehlot's brief appearance follows a tense standoff between the Lok Bhavan and the Congress government-- the latest in a series of confrontations involving the elected governments and the Lok Bhavan in non-BJP ruled states.
On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi walked out of the state Assembly without delivering his customary address to the House on the opening day of its inaugural session of the year, claiming "inaccuracies" in the text.
Similarly, his Kerala counterpart Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar had allegedly "omitted" portions of his speech, with the Lok Bhavan claiming his suggestions had been excluded from the original draft.
Gehlot had on Wednesday refused to deliver the customary address, taking exception to certain references to the Centre "repealing" the UPA-era MGNREGA.
A total of 11 paragraphs in the government prepared speech, which allegedly makes critical reference to the Centre and its policies, touching upon the MGNREGA and issues including devolution of funds seem to have irked the governor, who wanted them to be deleted.
This was not acceptable to the government.
A delegation led by minister K H Patil had met Gehlot in a bid to break the impasse.

The brief appearance follows a tense standoff between the Lok Bhavan and the Congress-led government &mdash; the latest in a series of Governor vs Government confrontations in non-BJP ruled states.
Earlier, Gehlot was received at the steps of the state secretariat by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader, Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil.

The Karnataka government has placed DGP (Civil Rights Enforcement) K Ramachandra Rao under suspension with immediate effect, pending inquiry, citing conduct unbecoming of a government servant and causing embarrassment to the state administration.
News channels beamed video on Monday purportedly showing Karnataka DGP (Civil Rights Enforcement) K Ramachandra Rao in an alleged compromising position with women.
The video went viral on social media as well. Rao sought to reject the videos outright, terming them "fabricated and false".
In an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) on Monday, the government said videos and news reports widely circulated on television channels and digital media platforms showed the senior IPS officer acting in an "obscene manner", prompting the decision to initiate disciplinary action.
"Vide videos and news reports widely broadcast on public news channels and media platforms, it is observed that Dr K Ramachandra Rao has acted in an obscene manner which is unbecoming of a Government Servant and also causing embarrassment to the Government," the government order said.
The order further said the matter was examined by the state government, which found that the officer's conduct amounted to violation of Rule-3 of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968.
The government said it is prima facie satisfied that "it is necessary to place Rao under suspension with immediate effect, pending inquiry".
During the suspension period, Rao will be entitled to subsistence allowance as per Rule-4 of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969.
The order also places restrictions on his movement, stating that during the period of suspension, the officer should not leave headquarters under any circumstances without the written permission of the State Government.
Rao is the stepfather of Kannada actress Harshavardhini Ranya alias Ranya Rao, who is accused of orchestrating the illegal import of gold worth over Rs 12.56 crore from Dubai to India along with two others -- businessman Tarun Raju, and jewellery dealer Sahil Jain.
Ranya was apprehended at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport on March 3, 2025 with 14.8 kilograms of gold allegedly smuggled from Dubai.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Ranya had made 45 solo trips to Dubai between 2023 and 2025, raising suspicions on her involvement in a broader smuggling network.
Ranya is presently in judicial custody at the Bengaluru Central Jail.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday clarified that there is no message from Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi as being reported in the media, and that the latter has only asked the state government to continue the good work.
Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress President, played down speculations regarding his social media post which read "efforts may fail, but prayers won't", linking it with his brief conversation with Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday evening.
Rahul Gandhi's brief conversation with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and his deputy and a claimant for the CM's chair, D K Shivakumar, on Tuesday evening has sparked off speculations, amid the ongoing power tussle between the two.
"I'm the state Congress President, he (Rahul Gandhi) is the leader of opposition (in Lok Sabha), he was also earlier the Congress President. Can our meeting with him, discussions with him, giving respect to him and receiving him as per protocol -- be discussed in public? You (media) unnecessarily quoting someone off the record are creating confusion and are destroying the respect your TV channels have," Shivakumar said in response to a question.
Speaking to reporters here, he insisted, "There is no message, we met him (Rahul Gandhi). He asked us to continue working in a good way, we will work in a good way. We have informed him about programmes we have planned regarding MGNREGA (Save MGNREGA campaign) in the state. We have also discussed BJP's politics in the state."
Asked whether anything was discussed with Rahul Gandhi that cannot be shared on record with the media, the KPCC chief said, "there is no such thing with me, always it is on-record with me."
The short talk between the leaders took place on the tarmac on Tuesday, as Rahul Gandhi landed at the Mandakalli Airport here for transit, on his way back to New Delhi from Gudalur in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, where he attended an event.
The former AICC president had brief conversations with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar both separately and together.
Asked about his social media post stating "efforts may fail, but prayers won't", the Deputy CM said it is not something new, and that he has made this statement in the past too.
"Recently, I had been to Udyami Vokkaliga-FC Expo 2025 (an entrepreneurial extravaganza dedicated to fostering the growth and success of Vokkaliga enterprises), there I had told them this, while sharing my experience, and the same has been tweeted," he clarified.
Shivakumar said that he will be going to New Delhi on January 16.
According to party sources, Shivakumar will be in the national capital to take part in a preparatory meeting in connection with the Assembly elections in Assam, for which he has been appointed as a senior observer by the Congress.

In his second term as chief minister, 77-year-old Siddaramaiah on January 6 equalled Urs&rsquo; record as the longest serving CM of the state for 2,792 days.&nbsp;
Urs, who is considered an icon of social justice and land reforms in the state, was a two-term CM for 2,113 days from March 20, 1972 to December 31, 1977, and for 679 days in second term from February 28, 1978 to January 7, 1980.&nbsp;
Siddaramaiah, who is also the only CM after Urs to complete a full five-year term, was in the office for 1,829 days in his first term from May 13, 2013 to May 15, 2018.&nbsp;
In his second term so far since May 20, 2023, he has completed 963 days. The achievement comes at a delicate time for the ruling party. Having reached the halfway mark of its five-year term on November 20, speculation regarding a "power-sharing" pact between Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar has intensified.&nbsp;
Noting that he did not enter politics to break any record, Siddaramaiah had expressed confidence in completing his full five-year term.He maintained that the final decision rests with the Congress high command.&nbsp;

At least nine persons were killed when a speeding truck crashed against a luxury sleeper bus, which caught fire under the impact, in this district early on Thursday, a senior police official said.
The bus with 32 passengers, which was on its way to Gokarna was engulfed in flames under the impact of the collision and most of the deceased were burnt alive inside the vehicle, East Zone Inspector General of Police Ravikanthe Gowda told reporters.
The accident happened after the truck jumped a road divider and collided with the oncoming bus, Gowda told reporters. The bus driver and cleaner escaped. The truck driver is among the dead, he added.
"Our preliminary investigation hints that a diesel tanker might be involved in the accident," Gowda said. Many passengers escaped by jumping from the bus, the Gowda said.
"Our initial investigation shows that eight passengers and the truck driver have died. Of the 12 injured, nine have been shifted to Sira and three to Tumakuru. One of the critically burnt patients has been taken to Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru," he added.
The rest of the injured are out of danger, the IGP said.
Another bus from T Dasrahalli to Dandeli with 42 school children that was behind the fateful bus just escaped the accident.
"The driver of the bus carrying schoolchildren hit the bus from behind, turned to the other side and veered off the road. Fortunately, no one sustained even a minor injury," Gowda said.
The children have continued their journey in another bus, he said, adding that the school bus driver is an important eyewitness to this accident, whose statement will be recorded.
Most passengers of the bus that was involved in the accident had booked their tickets online. "We have got their phone numbers. We are trying to contact their families," he said.
The officer said a DNA test would be performed to identify the dead bodies.

Reiterating that both of them will abide by the decision of the Congress high command on the leadership issue, he said, Shivakumar will become the CM, when the high command decides.
In an apparent display of unity, Siddaramaiah on Tuesday visited Shivakumar's residence for breakfast, just days after the two broke bread in the wake of a raging power tussle.
"This understanding will always be there. There are no differences. D K Shivakumar and I are united; we run the government unitedly. In the future also we will run the government unitedly," Siddaramaiah told reporters after the breakfast meeting.
On the leadership issue, he said, as decided in the previous breakfast meeting organised at the CM's residence on Saturday, both of them will abide by the high command's decision.
So far, there is no communication from the high command on the timeline for any decision on the matter. The CM, in response to a question said, "If they (high command) call us, we will definitely go and meet them. Tomorrow, I will be meeting AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal at a function, where both of us are invited."
Asked when Shivakumar will become the CM, Siddaramaiah said, "When the high command says."
Stating that he was invited by Shivakumar for breakfast, he said, after the breakfast, he and Deputy CM discussed regarding the upcoming legislature session starting from December 8 at Belagavi and the strategy to be adopted, also on organising a meeting of MPs from Karnataka in Delhi during the ongoing Parliament session on December 8 to discuss on issues concerning the state.
Regarding the cabinet reshuffle, Siddaramaiah said, the high command has to take a decision on it. Shivakumar, replying to a question, said that all MLAs are united in the Congress party and there are no differences.
Following the initial breakfast meeting on Saturday, at the CM's official residence, as part of an attempt by the Congress high command to break the logjam over the leadership row involving the two leaders, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had publicly stated that "there won't be any confusion", and that they would obey the high command on the leadership issue.

Siddaramaiah drove down to the Deputy CM's Sadashivanagar residence here, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother and former Congress MP D K Suresh.
Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath (a relative of Shivakumar), joined the two leaders for breakfast, which apparently had a combination of veg and non-veg dishes.
"Hosted the Hon'ble CM for breakfast at my residence today as we reaffirm our commitment to good governance and the continued development of our state under the Congress vision," Shivakumar posted on 'X'.

On Monday, Shivakumar had said that he and CM were "working like brothers", while asserting that there were no groups in the state Congress, and blamed the media for creating confusion.

On other leaders not being invited for the breakfast meeting, Parameshwara said, "We normally have a CLP (Congress Legislature Party) meeting, which is followed by dinner together. There is nothing wrong with it. We also feel that everything is going smoothly."
Regarding the demand from some sections to see him as CM, Parameshwara said, "Different people have different aspirations. I don't think it is wrong. Naturally, people want to see their own leaders (as CM), and express their aspirations when the time comes."

In an attempt to break the logjam over the leadership row involving the two leaders, Shivakumar had visited the CM's residence for a similar breakfast meeting, convened by Siddaramaiah at the behest of the Congress high command.
Following the initial meeting held on Saturday both leaders had publicly stated that "there won't be any confusion".
On the leadership issue, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar maintained that they would obey the high command.
The development is seen as a move by the high command to pause the leadership tussle between the two, and signals Siddaramaiah's continuation as the CM for time being, especially ahead of the Belagavi legislature session from December 8.
"As told by the CM on Saturday, he is scheduled to visit Shivakumar's residence for breakfast tomorrow," official sources said.
However, speaking to reporters on Monday, Siddaramaiah said, "On that day (Saturday) he (Shivakumar) asked me to come to his house for breakfast on Tuesday. I have not received any call till now, other than what he said day before yesterday. If invited, I will go. He may call. I think he will invite me."
Meanwhile, responding to a question if he has extended an invitation to the CM to join him for breakfast, Shivakumar said, "It's a matter related to me and the CM, we both are working like brothers."
"We met under your (media) pressure (on November 29). There was no need for it. You are alleging groupism, but there are no groups. You are creating groups -- DK group , Siddaramaiah group and others," the state Congress chief said.
Asserting that he is not in any group, Shivakumar added, "I have 140 people (MLAs) with me."
"When we are born or die, we are alone. When it comes to the party, we will take everyone together. There is no need for anyone to worry."
The power tussle within the ruling party had intensified amid speculations about a change in chief minister in the state after the Congress government reached the halfway mark of its five-year term on November 20.

The cryptic post is seen as his reminder to the Congress and Siddaramaiah about a rumoured power-sharing agreement between the two in 2023 when both vied for the CM's chair after the party swept the state polls.
In his post explaining how he "bettered the world", Siddaramaiah spoke about the five guarantee schemes -- Shakti, Gruha Lakshmi, Yuva Nidhi, Anna Bhagya and Gruha Jyoti.
These are schemes in various sectors including providing free electricity, cash dole to women heads and free bus rides for women.
Siddaramaiah said that in his first term from 2013 to 2018, 157 of 165 promises were fulfilled with over 95 per cent delivery. In the current term, over 243 assurances out of 593 are already completed, and "every remaining promise will be fulfilled with commitment, credibility, and care", he added.
"The mandate given by the people of Karnataka is not a moment, but a responsibility that lasts five full years. The Congress party, including me, is walking the talk for our people with compassion, consistency, and courage. Our word to Karnataka is not a slogan, it means the world to us," the Chief Minister said.
There was stiff competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for the chief minister's post after the declaration of Assembly election results on 20 May 2023, and the Congress had managed to convince the latter and made him the Deputy CM.
There were some reports at the time that a compromise had been reached based on a "rotational chief minister formula," according to which Shivakumar will become CM after 2.5 years, but they have not been officially confirmed by the party.
However, Siddaramaiah rejected these reports and asserted that he will be the chief minister for five years.
MLAs and ministers loyal to Shivakumar have been going to Delhi to impress upon the party high command to make their leader Chief Minister "as agreed upon", Congress sources said.

If karyakartas are there, we are there," Shivakumar said in response to a question about whether him becoming the CM would be final.
Speaking to reporters in his home constituency, Kanakapura, he said, "The CM has spoken. He is a senior leader. He is an asset for the party. He has completed 7.5 years as CM (including an earlier 5 years term from 2013-2018)."
Siddaramaiah has said that he will be presenting the next budget too. "I'm very happy. He had served as opposition leader in the past. He has also worked and built the party. We should all work together with the target of 2028 (assembly polls) and target 2029 (Lok Sabha polls)," he further said.
When told that the people of Bengaluru South (earlier Ramanagara) had given all the four seats in the district to Congress to see him as the CM, Shivakumar said he had not asked anyone for anything.
"During the election time, I had gone to all constituencies, including Mahadevappa (Minister close to Siddaramaiah), to vote looking at my face. I have asked everywhere in Mandya too. I don't dispute it. People have voted. In all 224 assembly segments karyakartas have worked tirelessly more than us and have brought this government to power. The MLAs and ministers are the beneficiaries," he said.
To a question on legislators backing him traveling to Delhi to meet high command with a demand to make him the CM, Shivakumar said he was not aware of it, and that they might be making efforts to become ministers. "I have not telephoned or called any of them (legislators) or spoken to them. I'm not asking them why they went. I don't need it," he said.
A batch of six Congress legislators backing Shivakumar had traveled to New Delhi on November 23 to meet the high command leaders, party sources said on Monday, adding that a few more legislators are likely to travel soon to pitch for Shivakumar as CM.
Last week, some legislators, about ten of them, supporting Shivakumar had travelled to Delhi and met Kharge, as the Congress government completed 2.5 years in office on November 20.
Asked whether there was a power-sharing agreement after the Assembly polls in 2023, Shivakumar said, "Why should I speak about it. You (media) have written things."
Not willing to comment on the statements of other leaders from within the party and opposition on the CM change issue, he said he was not a spokesperson for any of them.
When told that his supporters and party workers were offering prayers for him to become the CM, he said, "Prayers offered today are not that important when compared to prayers offered by mothers and sisters, youths, elders and workers when I was in jail. They prayed that I should be released.... today I'm Deputy CM and party president. They prayed when I did not have any of these positions. They stood by me and gave me moral courage. That's big."

There was stiff competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for the chief minister's post after the declaration of Assembly election results on May 20, 2023. The Congress had managed to convince the latter and make him the deputy chief minister.

According to sources, Minister N Chaluvarayaswamy, MLAs Iqbal Hussain, H C Balakrishna and S R Srinivas have headed to Delhi on Thursday. Twelve more MLAs are likely to reach Delhi on Friday, they said.
A few days ago, about a dozen MLCs had camped in the national capital and spoke to the Congress general secretaries, sources said.
Addressing a gathering in Chamarajanagar on Thursday, Siddaramaiah hinted that he would continue as the chief minister. He emphasised that his position has been strong from the beginning and will continue to remain so in the future.
Reacting to the MLAs heading to Delhi, Shivakumar said he is not aware of it and that he is not keeping well.
When a reporter pointed out Siddaramaiah's assertion that he will remain chief minister for the full five-year term, he said, "I am very glad about it. No one has said no. No one questioned that he will not be the chief minister. Our party has given him responsibility to him to work as the chief minister. We all are working together."
Regarding some Congress MLCs meeting him at his residence, the deputy chief minister said the meeting was about having the legislative council chairman and deputy chairman from the Congress.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar's brother and former MP D K Suresh said Siddaramaiah never backtracks from his promises.
When asked whether Siddaramaiah would keep his promise made to Shivakumar, Suresh said he has no clue about it. "You should ask about big things only to big people. How can I answer such questions?" he asked reporters in Bengaluru.
Suresh said his brother had communicated to party seniors whatever was needed. "The matter is now left to the party, its leadership, the AICC president and Rahul Gandhi to decide," he added.

Elon Musk-owned X through its official handle said orders issued by police officers to arbitrarily take down content from its platform through a "secretive online portal called the Sahyog" is a violation of Indian citizens' constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression.
"X respects and complies with Indian law, but this order fails to address the core constitutional issues in our challenge and is inconsistent with the Bombay High Court's recent ruling that a similar regime was unconstitutional," the social media platform said on Monday.
The Karnataka High Court had on Wednesday dismissed X Corp's petition challenging the authority of government officials to issue content takedown orders under the Information Technology Act and maintained that social media needs to be regulated.
The bench presided over by Justice M Nagaprasanna stressed on regulation of social media, especially in cases of offences against women.
It further said the Indian marketplace cannot be presumed as a mere playground where information can be disseminated in defiance of statutes or disregard to legality.
"We respectfully disagree with the view that we have no right to raise these concerns because of our incorporation abroad -- X contributes significantly to public discourse in India and the voice of our users is at the heart of our platform. We will appeal this order to defend free expression," X said.
The social media firm said it is deeply concerned by the recent order from the Karnataka court, which will allow millions of police officers to issue arbitrary takedown orders through a secretive online portal called the Sahyog.
"This new regime has no basis in the law, circumvents Section 69A of the IT Act, violates Supreme Court rulings, and infringes Indian citizens' constitutional rights to freedom of speech and expression. The Sahyog enables officers to order content removal based solely on allegations of "illegality," without judicial review or due process for speakers, and threatens platforms with criminal liability for non-compliance," X said.

The Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru, has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places over the next three hours.
A yellow alert has been sounded for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Kalaburagi and Bidar districts.
According to IMD, temporary power disruptions, minor traffic snarls and uprooting of weak tree branches are likely. The public has been advised to stay indoors, close doors and windows, avoid unnecessary travel, unplug electrical appliances, seek safe shelter away from trees or waterbodies and drive with caution.
Rainfall data recorded between 8.30 am on August 27 and 5.30 am on August 28 include 106.6 mm at Mangaluru AP, 70.1 mm at Gadag, 28.2 mm at Bengaluru HAL AP, 14.8 mm at Chitradurga, 10.4 mm at Kalaburagi, and 4.9 mm at Bengaluru city.
Other weather stations reported 108.5 mm at Agumbe, 46.5 mm at Tidagundi in Vijayapura, and 33 mm at Mangaluru.
Data recorded between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on August 27 showed 87.7 mm at Honnavar, 55.4 mm at Karwar, 26.2 mm at Bidar and 11.3 mm at Shaktinagar.

The IMD has cautioned that intermittent rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning and winds of 30 to 40 kmph may continue in isolated pockets across Karnataka over the next few hours.

Karnataka Deputy CM D K Shivakumar slammed the Enforcement Directorate for political targeting, citing the Supreme Court's dismissal of ED's plea in the MUDA land case as proof of misuse.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has said that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was being misused for political purposes, and cited his own case as an example of such "abuse".
Speaking to reporters in Kodihalli, Kanakapura on Monday, he said the Supreme Court's observations in the MUDA case, where it dismissed the ED's appeal, reflected a pattern of selective targeting.
"My case itself is proof of the ED being misused politically. They filed a case against me, sent me to Tihar Jail, and eventually the case was dropped," he said.
The Deputy CM urged the ED to introspect and examine whether it is succumbing to political pressure.
Referring to the MUDA case, he said, "Once a 'B' report was submitted, there was no question of further appeal. That is probably why the Supreme Court made such observations." Shivakumar questioned why ED cases were being filed only against Congress leaders.
"Why are there no ED cases against BJP leaders? Why are only Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Robert Vadra and other Congress leaders targeted? Has everyone who joined the BJP suddenly become pure? Isn't this the BJP's washing machine?" he asked.
Shivakumar's remarks follow the Supreme Court's dismissal of the Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) filed by the ED in the MUDA (Mysuru Urban Development Authority) land allotment case involving Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's wife Parvathi B M and Congress MLA Byrathi Suresh.
The Karnataka High Court had earlier quashed the ED's notices in the case, observing that the agency acted without legal basis under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The Supreme Court upheld that decision, stating that it found no fault in the High Court's ruling.
The MUDA case involves the allotment of compensatory sites to Parvathi in an upmarket Mysuru locality in lieu of 3.16 acres of land acquired from her by MUDA.
The ED had issued notices alleging irregularities in the allotment, but the courts have now rejected those proceedings.
