According to experts, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are as addictive as nicotine, cocaine, or heroin, affecting over 1 in 10 individuals. A comprehensive analysis of 281 studies across 36 countries has unveiled that a staggering 14% of adults are hooked on UPFs.
The revelation is startling, especially considering that UPFs, including items like sausages, ice cream, biscuits, soft drinks, and sugary cereals, have previously been associated with cognitive decline, cancer, psychological distress, and premature mortality.
Compared to naturally sourced foods, UPFs contain disproportionately high levels of both carbohydrates and fats, contributing to their addictive nature.
Consuming ultra-processed foods triggers a surge of dopamine followed by a rapid drop-off, leading to a relentless cycle of craving, gratification, and subsequent crash &mdash; paralleling the experience of those addicted to substances like alcohol or drugs.
However, susceptibility to the addictive qualities of UPFs may vary; some may find satisfaction with a small portion of potato chips, while others may not be as fortunate.
Healthline advises that processed food should ideally constitute no more than 10% to 20% of one's daily caloric intake.

A new study says your favourite junk food might make you feel happy for the time being but could also be responsible for mental imbalance.&nbsp;
The study was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, and it found that rates of depression are 80% higher in those who consume ultra-processed foods in huge amounts.&nbsp;
The team questioned 2,572 graduate and undergraduate students in Brazil about their food habits every two years between 2016 and 2020.&nbsp;
Their body mass index, alcohol consumption, smoking habits and other habits were taken into consideration along with the fact if they had diabetes or had been diagnosed with clinical depression earlier or not.&nbsp;
Those who had ultra-processed foods as about 31% of their daily diet, were up to 82% more likely to be diagnosed with depression as compared to those who ate the least amount of ultra-processed foods, as less than 16% of their daily diet.&nbsp;

A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine has found that the consumption of highly processed foods containing little or no whole food in their ingredients is associated with a higher risk of premature death.&nbsp;
These unhealthy ready-to-eat-or-heat foods include prepackaged soups, sauces, frozen pizza, sodas, ice cream, hot dogs, sausages, and store-bought cookies, candies, cakes and doughnuts.
The research also reported that highly processed foods contributed to 57,000 premature deaths in Brazil in 2019. Study authors concluded that reducing consumption of UPFs by 10 per cent to 50 per cent could potentially prevent approximately 5,900 to 29,300 premature deaths in Brazil.&nbsp;
