Kiren Rijiju: few retired judges 'part of the anti-India gang' trying to turn judiciary against govt

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday claimed that a few retired judges and some activists who are "part of the anti-India gang" are trying to make the Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

The minister was speaking at the India Today Conclave, where Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud later defended the Collegium system, saying "not every system is perfect but this is the best system we have developed" and the "object was to protect the independence of the judiciary, which is a cardinal value".
Rijiju also hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks in London on democracy in India, saying the person who speaks the most says he is not allowed to speak.
"Anti-India forces in India and outside India, they use the same language - democracy is in danger, human rights are non-existent in India. What this anti-India gang says, the same language is used by Rahul Gandhi," the minister alleged.

Amid the ongoing tussle between the centre and the judiciary over appointment of judges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded CJI DY Chandrachud's emphasis on making the top court&rsquo;s judgments available in regional languages.
"At a recent function, the Hon'ble CJI Justice DY Chandrachud spoke of the need to work towards making SC judgments available in regional languages. He also suggested the use of technology for it. This is a laudatory thought, which will help many people, particularly youngsters," Modi wrote on Twitter and shared on the site the relevant clip of the CJI's speech delivered at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in Mumbai.&nbsp;
The Prime Minister&rsquo;s tweet came just hours after law minister, Kiren Rijiju launched a fresh attack on the Supreme Court, by sharing an interview of a retired high court judge who said apex court has &lsquo;hijacked&rsquo; the Constitution by deciding to appoint judges itself.

In a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, Justice Ramana took the oath in the name of God, as Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad were present. Justice Ramana is the first judge from Andhra Pradesh High Court to be the Chief Justice of India. He will have a tenure of one year four months as a CJI and will demit office on August 26, 2022.

The independence of the judiciary is not a one-time pill but “state of affairs” that has to remain constant, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has said. Gogoi, who was addressing the 14th SCO conference of chief justices in Russia’s Sochi, said there was a need to develop and nurture leadership in the judiciary. Talking about India Gogoi said the executive and judiciary enjoyed a healthy relationship of mutual respect. However, he said the rise of populism presented a challenge to independence of courts.
