Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra is living a dream of competing in a javelin event that bears his name and believes that it is start of something significant in Indian athletics which now needs multiple world class events.
The Neeraj Chopra Classic, which will feature top-class athletes, is set to take place at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Saturday.
Chopra said he will try to upscale the event in the coming years.
"I feel like I'm in a dream. Medals are a different thing. But I've given something like this to India and to Indian athletes. I'm very happy about that. This is the beginning of a new chapter in our athletics," Chopra said in a pre-event press meet here Friday.
"The support I'm getting from everyone. From the government, from KOA (Karnataka Olympic Association), from World Athletics, from the sponsors&hellip; I feel like we can make this event even better." Chopra said he wanted to make the athletic competitions in India comparable to the events which are held regularly in the traditional powerhouses like the USA or European nations.
"This is the beginning of international competitions in India. As we see, there are so many international competitions in Germany and such nations - A category, B, C etc and every week, there's a competition.
"So, this is what I want in India, as there should be at least 4, 5, 6 competitions which are world class. The athletes should get a chance and people should see them play. That will be very good for our sport," he explained.
While he is very much involved in the conduct of the event, the star athlete said he has not diverted his focus from acing an elite field here on Saturday, and keeping his preparation on track for the upcoming World Championships.
"The athlete in me is always up (for the competition). That's why I'm trying to manage everything. My team is also handling so many things. But the athlete in me is always up. I'm training hard," he said.
"After doing everything, I train. I did throw sessions, too. So, yes. I have a mindset for that ahead of tomorrow's competition." While winning the event that has been named after him remains his immediate priority, Chopra is aware that he has a bigger challenge coming his way in the World Championships in Tokyo in September.
The ace Indian javelin thrower said he has his eyes firmly set on the blue riband event.
"Of course, tomorrow's competition is very important and after that we will start preparing for the World Championships. I'm very happy to be here with the coach (Jan Zelezny). Yesterday, I was training in the gym with the coach. This is the kind of competition that will be the target ahead of the World Championship," he noted.
Beyond the personal glory moment, Chopra was also excited to see a world class event taking place in India.
"I'm very happy that this is finally happening. I was at the gym yesterday and I saw other athletes throwing and that has been my dream. I will say it again that I never thought there would be an event like this.
"I never thought I would represent India and win a medal. All that has happened. Now, there's peace in my mind that something like this is happening."

Neeraj Chopra says he is "slowly understanding the concept of flow" after his celebrated coach Jan Zelezny advised him to run like an 18-year-old "without any tension" before launching his javelin.
The 27-year-old Chopra, a double Olympic medallist, also said he would want to have cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar's "superpower" to help him handle challenges with a calm mindset.
He said the best advice he has received on and off the field was from Czech legend Zelezny, who also holds the world record in javelin with a throw of 98.48m.
"Whenever I throw, I stay very energetic, but he (Zelezny) tells me I need to run in a flow. It shouldn't feel tight - I should run like an 18-year-old kid without any tension. I'm slowly understanding the concept of flow," Chopra told Star Sports and JioHotstar.
"I think that in any sport, flow is very important. For example, Roger Federer - he played with such grace and rhythm that it never seemed like he was putting in too much effort. I&rsquo;m trying to bring that into my training." Asked which cricketer's superpower he would like to have for throwing his javelin, Chopra said, "Sachin Tendulkar. He represented our country so well for so many years and made so many records for us. The way he faced challenges from many great bowlers and still performed exceptionally." "I would want that superpower and try to do the same. It would help me handle challenges that come my way with a calm mindset,&rdquo; said Chopra who is hosting NC Classic in Bengaluru on July 5, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.
The world champion Indian, who joined the 90m club headed by Zelezny at the Doha Diamond League in May, said the legendary MS Dhoni's 'Helicopter Shot' resembles a javelin throw in terms of power and technique.
Asked which cricketer he thinks would be able to throw the javelin, Chopra said, "I have heard that Brett Lee was a javelin thrower. I think he could throw the javelin well, especially when he was in his peak years.
"I would like to try javelin with Jasprit Bumrah too and hope he teaches me some bowling skills. While bowling and javelin are both throws, they are very different. I would like to learn from Bumrah.&rdquo; Asked whether he's superstitious, Chopra said, "I try to stay calm on the day of my event. I don&rsquo;t think too much about it. I just focus on giving my 100%. I try to stay relaxed, eat good food, and rest well.&rdquo; After throwing 90.23m at the Doha Diamond League for a second place finish on May 16, Chopra won the Paris DL title with an effort of 88.16m. He then won the Golden Spike Ostrava title with a throw of 85.29m on June 24.

The inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic international javelin throw event, which was postponed due to the India-Pakistan military conflict last month, will be held on July 5 here, the organisers announced on Tuesday.
India's first-ever international javelin throw competition, which was originally scheduled for May 24, is being organised by double Olympic medalist Chopra in collaboration with JSW Sports and sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
The star-studded 12-man event, to be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, will feature seven of the best javelin throwers in the world and five Indians, including Chopra.
The other four Indians are Asian championships silver-medallist Sachin Yadav, Kishore Jena, Rohit Yadav and Sahil Silwal.
The foreign competitors for the event are two-time world champion Anderson Peters (PB: 93.07m) of Grenada, 2016 Olympics gold winner Thomas Rohler (PB: 93.90m) of Germany, 2015 world champion Julius Yego (92.72m) of Kenya, American Curtis Thompson (PB: 87.76m), Asian Games bronze medallist Genki Dean (PB: 84.28m) of Japan, Rumesh Pathirage (PB: 85.45m) of Sri Lanka, Luiz Mauricio da Silva (PB: 86.34m) of Brazil.
"Bringing the Neeraj Chopra Classic back this quickly has taken an enormous collective effort, and we're happy to confirm its return on July 5," said JSW Sports Chief Commercial Officer Karan Yadav.
"...the unwavering support from the AFI, the Karnataka Olympic Association, the Government of Karnataka, and our partners made this possible. The energy around this event is bigger than ever, and we're set to deliver a celebration of javelin that's bolder, better, and even more unforgettable." The event, which was granted category A status by World Athletics, was shifted to the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru from the original venue of Panchkula due to inadequate lighting for live telecast.
A 'dream project' of Chopra, it was announced with much fanfare, but had to be postponed due to the border tensions after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists.
According to the organisers, the ticket prices for the showpiece will range from Rs 199 to Rs 9,999. For premium experience, five corporate boxes accommodating 15 guests each are available at Rs 44,999.
A special stand alongside the thrower's runway is priced at Rs 9,999, while another special stand in the North Upper Stand, located just behind the runway, is available for Rs 2,999.

The Neeraj Chopra Classic will now take place in Bengaluru's Kanteerava Stadium, featuring top javelin stars. The move ensures better facilities, with participation from global champions and Indian athletes.

The maiden edition of Neeraj Chopra Classic javelin throw event on May 24 has been shifted from Panchkula to Bengaluru due to lack of adequate lighting at the original venue but the field will be teeming with stars as the likes of Anderson Peters and Thomas Rohler have confirmed their participation.
Peters, who hails from Grenada, is a two-time world champion and Rohler is the gold-medallist from the 2016 Olympics. Chopra said he has also invited Pakistani Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem who is, however, yet to confirm participation.
"I have sent invitation to Arshad and he said he will get back to me after discussing with his coach. As of now he is yet to confirm participation," Chopra told reporters in a virtual media interaction.
The competition has been granted category A status by World Athletics.
"I wanted the event in Panchkula but there are certain issues related to lighting at the stadium there. World Athletics requirement is 600 lux (a measure of the intensity of light), which is not there (in Panchkula) and it will take time (to install it)," he said.
"So, we have decided to shift the event to Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. We have a team there and it will be lot easier for the event to be staged there," said the 27-year-old who is also supported by Bengaluru-based JSW Sports.
The event will be jointly organised by Chopra and JSW Sports in collaboration with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and World Athletics, featuring top global as well as Indian javelin throwers.
Besides Peters, who also won a bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics, and Rohler, the participation of Kenyan Julius Yego, a silver-medallist in the 2016 Rio Olympics besides being a 2015 World Championships gold winner, and American Curtis Thompson, who is the current season leader with 87.76m, has also been confirmed.
"A Brazilian, who qualified for the final in (Paris Olympics) has also confirmed participation," Chopra said without giving name, though it could be Luiz da Silva, who finished 11th in Paris with a best throw of 80.67m.
"I'm very much involved in the organisation of the event, which is a dream come true for me. I am also competing. Yesterday, I spoke to Rohit (Yadav) and three to four Indians will be competing. It will be a very good opportunity to get ranking points for World Championships in Tokyo (in September)." He said his current coach Jan Zelezny, the legendary world record holder, suggested that the event should be named after the Indian superstar.
"I was talking to Zelezny about this event and he said that it would be good if it is named after me.
"I am very excited. I have won Olympic and other medals for the country. Now with this event, I am giving back something to Indian athletics, to Indian athletes and the fans." He said the NC Classic will be an annual competition and he is hoping that events other than javelin will be added in the future.
"I wanted to state that this event will be an annual affair. As of now, it will be just a men's javelin event. But in future, I am hoping that women's event and other events will also be added.
"If you ask me, I want a Diamond League Meeting to be held in India. We have the stadium to host DL Meetings, and it will be good for World Athletics also to spread athletics. World Athletics knows that athletics is growing in India." The fans will need to buy tickets to watch the NC Classic javelin event.
"There will be tickets for the event, for different boxes. But we will try that the ticket price is not too much. The fans should feel the ticket price is worth the enjoyment of watching the event," said Chopra.

It was the first time since 1951 that India won gold in both men's and women's javelin throw at the Asian Games.

Neeraj's first throw probably around the 87m mark but he had to retake it because another athlete went for his throw before Neeraj's was measured.
The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist then recorded 84.49m with his second attempt and was leading before Jena overtook him in his 3rd attempt with his Personal Best throw of 86.77m.
With that throw, he also qualified for the Paris Olympics. The qualification mark was 85.50.
But Neeraj didn't give up. He once again took the lead with a throw of 88.88m. Jena improved his personal best recorded a throw of 87.54m but that still fell a little short but helped him clinch silver.
What made the feat even more historic was the fact that it was the first time since 1951 that India won gold in both men's and women's javelin throw at the Asian Games.

India's Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will be aiming to become only the second Indian ever to win a medal at World Athletics Championship. The qualification for javelin throwers is scheduled to take place on July 22 morning (Indian time) at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in the US. 
With a leap of 6.70 metres, legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George is the only Indian in World Athletics. She claimed Bronze in the 2003 Paris edition.

And now all eyes will be on India's golden boy Neeraj given it is expected that the Haryana lad would easily qualify for the final round, which will take place on Sunday morning (Indian time).
With a personal-best throw of 89.94 metres three weeks ago, it is expected that the reigning Commonwealth Games and Asiad champions will breach the 90-metre mark at the showpiece event on Sunday morning before competing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra finished second at the prestigious Diamond League meeting in Stockholm on Thursday.
Neeraj Chopra shattered the national record once again, recording a throw of 89.94m. He fell short of the coveted 90-metre mark by just 6 centimetres.
Making his first appearance in four years at the prestigious one-day meet, Chopra claimed the second spot with his personal best throw of 89.94 metres.
The 24-year-old had also finished second at the Paavo Nurmi Games with a previous best throw of 89.30m.
At the Kourtane Games, his throw of 86.60m was enough to fetch him a Gold in tough conditions.
But the Stockholm meet was the toughest event of the year since it was also the first time since Tokyo 2020 that all Olympic medalists from his event were in action.
World Champion Anderson Peters emerged victorious in the competition with a best throw of 90.31 metres. Julian Weber of Germany was third with a throw of 89.08 metres.
Even though Neeraj Chopra narrowly missed out on winning the event, he became only the second Indian to finish in the top three in a Diamond League competition after discus thrower Vikas Gowda.

Playing for the first time in an international tournament since Tokyo Olympics, Indian star Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra made a huge return at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland where he broke his own national record with an 89.30m throw.
The Olympic gold medalist finished second and won the silver medal at the event. Finland's Oliver Helander threw his personal best of 89.83m and won the gold. Chopra set the previous national record with an 88.07-metre throw in March 2021 at Patiala.
The Javelin thrower from Haryana threw 86.92m on his first attempt. Then, on attempt two, he broke his own national record with an 89.30m throw. His next three attempts were fouls while his sixth and last throw was 85.85m.
This was the first competition for the 24-year-old javelin thrower in 10 months. Chopra is India's second individual gold medalist at the Olympics and also the country's first ever gold medalist in athletics. 
Chopra will next play in the Kourtane Games in Finland on Saturday.
