An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 hit the Kashmir Valley early on Monday, causing panic among the people in Pattan and surrounding areas of Baramulla district, officials said.&nbsp;
There were no reports of any damage so far, they said.&nbsp;
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake occurred at 5.35 am at a depth of 10 km with the epicentre in Pattan area, which is 10 km northeast of Gulmarg, a tourist resort.&nbsp;
Earlier, the magnitude was the earthquake was said to be 4.6 but it was later reviewed to 4.7. Tremors lasted nearly 20 seconds.&nbsp;
The Kashmir Valley is located in an highly active seismic area. The National Seismic Hazard Map by the Bureau of Indian Standards released in November last year has placed the entire Himalayan arc, including Kashmir, in the siesmic Zone VI.&nbsp;
Large parts of Kashmir on either side of Line of Control were flattened by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005, resulting in death of thousands and widespread damage to infrastructure.&nbsp;

Security forces on Friday intensified their ongoing anti-terror operation in the snowbound Chatroo belt to track down and neutralise a group of three holed up Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.
They said mobile internet services remained temporarily suspended within a radius of six km covering Singhpora, Chingam and Chatroo to avoid its misuse by anti-national elements during the ongoing operation.
The operation in the area was launched on January 18, leading to a fierce gunbattle in Sonnar forest near Mandral-Singhpora resulting in the killing of a paratrooper and injuries to seven soldiers.
Although the terrorists managed to escape taking advantage of thick vegetation and the challenging terrain, the security forces continued their hunt for the terrorists despite more than two feet of snowfall.
Two more encounters took place between the army and the terrorists at Mali Dana top on January 22 and Janseer-Kandiwar on January 25 but the terrorists once again slipped deep into the forest area.
The suspension of mobile internet services in Singhpora, Chingam and Chatroo has been extended till 23:59 hours on January 30, the officials said, quoting an order issued by the J-K Home Department.
The mobile internet services were suspended in the area on January 23 amid the ongoing operation.
The suspension was ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, who is the authorised officer under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024.
The decision was taken to prevent the possible misuse of high-speed mobile data services by anti-national elements, which could lead to deterioration of public order, the officials said.
Security forces have launched a search operation in Pajja Morh, Nabana top and adjoining areas in Surankote area of Poonch district following information about the presence of two suspected persons.
There was no contact with the suspected persons so far, the officials said, adding the operation is continuing when last reports were received.

Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir, registering a low of minus 11.2 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night's minus 9.8 degrees Celsius, the officials said.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir's Baramulla district registered a low of minus 9, while the Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperature in Qazigund, the gateway town of the valley, settled at zero degrees, while Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.6 degrees and Kupwara minus 3.5 degrees Celsius, they added.
'Chilla-i-Kalan', the 40-day period of extreme cold during which night temperatures often drop several degrees below the freezing point, and the chances of snowfall are the highest, is about to end. 'Chilla-i-Kalan', which began on December 21 last year, ends on January 30.
However, cold conditions continue even after that. 'Chillai-Kalan' is followed by a 20-day 'Chillai Khurd' (small cold) and 10-day 'Chillai Bachha (baby cold)
The Meteorological Department has said the weather would remain cloudy but dry after till January 31. A fresh western disturbance is likely to impact the region on February 1, which could bring another spell of wet weather, it said.

The Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop the Trikuta hills also witnessed the first snowfall of the season, forcing the authorities to suspend the yatra, while moderate rains lashed the plains, including Jammu city, bringing an end to a dry spell that had lasted for over two months.
As predicted by the meteorological department, it started snowing in the high altitude areas late Thursday evening, while intermittent rains lashed the plains, including Jammu city throughout the night, the officials said.
Snowfall was still continuing in the upper reaches of Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Udhampur and Kathua districts, officials said, adding that five inches to over one foot of snow had accumulated in the snow-bound areas.
The higher reaches had also recorded snowfall in the last week of December and the fresh precipitation had brought relief to the people.
The traffic on the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway, the only all weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was suspended following fresh snowfall.
&ldquo;Traffic movement has been stopped in both directions -- from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa on Jammu Srinagar national highway (NH-44) due to fresh snowfall in and around the Navyug Tunnel (in Banihal-Qazigund stretch).
&ldquo;In addition, the Mughal Road, Srinagar-Leh national highway, Mughal and Sinthan Roads have also been closed owing to fresh snow accumulation,&rdquo; a traffic department official said, advising commuters to avoid travel until these roads are fully restored and declared safe for traffic.
The officials said the authorities have ordered closure of all schools in the hilly districts of Rajouri, Poonch and Kathua districts as a precautionary measure in view of the snowfall.
Police have also established dedicated helpline numbers at all district headquarters in response to the ongoing inclement weather, they said.

An armoured vehicle of the Army carrying troops for an anti-terror operation plunged into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Doda district on Thursday, killing 10 soldiers and injuring 11 others, officials said.
The accident took place at the 9000-foot-high Khanni top along the Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate road around noon when the driver of the bulletproof vehicle, Casspir, lost control and the vehicle plunged into a 200-foot-deep gorge.
The Casspir, also known as 'Casper', is a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, designed to keep troops safe while navigating hostile environments with high mine or IED threats.
The Army&rsquo;s Jammu-based White Knight Corps described the incident as &ldquo;unfortunate&rdquo; and said the vehicle slipped off the road while navigating treacherous terrain in bad weather.
A joint rescue operation by the Army and police recovered the bodies of four soldiers, while 17 others were evacuated to a hospital in an injured condition, the officials said. The vehicle was badly mangled by the rescue team.
Later, six more injured soldiers succumbed to injuries. While 10 of the injured were airlifted to Udhampur command hospital for specialised treatment, one more soldier is under observation in Bhaderwah sub-district hospital and his condition was stated to be &ldquo;stable&rdquo;, the officials said.
&ldquo;We have lost 10 soldiers with 11 others injured in the unfortunate accident involving an army vehicle,&rdquo; Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhaderwah, Sumit Kumar Bhutyal told PTI.

"Several such instances have happened in the past. There is an urgent need to strengthen road infrastructure, improve mobility in difficult terrain, and road-safety measures to prevent such heartbreaking losses," he said.
Democratic Progressive Azad Party Azad said, &ldquo;My deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and I pray for the swift recovery of those injured.&rdquo;
Army's Northern Commander said the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Lt Gen Pratik Sharma and all ranks of the Command salute the bravehearts and express heartfelt condolences on the untimely demise of soldiers who lost their lives in the unfortunate vehicle accident.
"Northern Command fraternity stands in solidarity with the bereaved families and wishes speedy recovery to those injured in the accident," it said in a post on X.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar dropped by a degree from the previous night to settle at a low of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night, officials said.
Tourist resort of Sonamarg in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district was the coldest recorded place in the valley at minus 6.1 degrees Celsius &mdash; down from minus 5.5 degrees Celsius the previous night.
The popular ski resort of Gulmarg, in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, recorded a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius, officials said.
The Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir, which also serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night's minus 3.8 degrees Celsius, they said.

Two strong western disturbances are likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir this week, with the first one making its impact on Thursday, and another on January 26, officials said.
Under the influence of these systems, widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall is expected, including in the plains of the valley, they said.
They said the main activity of these weather systems would occur on January 23 and January 27.
The weather system beginning on Thursday could end the prolonged dry spell in the plains of Kashmir as the Met office has forecast the possibility of light to moderate snowfall in the plains, including Srinagar, officials said.
The system could disrupt the surface and air traffic, they said.

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Monday said Kashmiri Pandits are always welcome to return to their homes in the Valley, as the displaced community observed the 36th anniversary of their exodus in Jammu and reiterated demands for a comprehensive policy on their return and rehabilitation.
However, the former chief minister expressed scepticism about whether the migrated community would want to come back in a permanent manner, considering they have built new lives where they currently reside in other parts of the country, with their children engaged in employment and education.
In a related development, J-K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary said the National Conference leadership has always supported the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley as Kashmir is incomplete without the community.
Kashmiri Pandits observe January 19 as 'holocaust day' to mark the exodus of their community members from the Valley in 1990 due to threats and killings by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. Members of the community also staged protests at various locations in support of their demands, including a separate homeland within the Valley.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a two-day party programme in Jammu, Abdullah noted that many Kashmiri Pandit families never left the Valley and continue to live peacefully in their villages and localities.
"When will they return (to Kashmir)? Who is stopping them? No one is preventing them. They should come back, as it is their home. Many Kashmiri Pandits are currently living in the Valley and have not left their villages," the former chief minister responded when asked about protests by Kashmiri Pandits supporting their demand for return and rehabilitation in the Valley.
Hundreds of Kashmiri Pandits, under the banner of 'Youth 4 Panun Kashmir,' also blocked the Jammu-Srinagar national highway near Jagti camp on Sunday evening, demanding a separate homeland in the Valley for their return and asking for the passage of a bill in Parliament to recognise their genocide.
When asked about the demands of the displaced Kashmiri Pandits, Abdullah remarked that he had assured them that the government would construct houses for them and provide the necessary support. He added that after the fall of his government, it was in the Central government's hands to implement the proposal.
He noted that the community would first need to assess the situation, as many Kashmiri Pandits are now settled across different parts of the country. "They have grown older; many are seeking medical treatment, and their children are studying in colleges, schools, and universities. They may visit, but I don't think they will return to live there permanently," he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary said NC president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have always supported the return and rehabilitation of the Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley. "Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits. Their return will restore the brotherhood and hospitality," he said, expressing hope that the Centre would make a decision soon on their return and rehabilitation.
General Secretary of All State Kashmiri Pandit Conference (ASKPC), P K Raina, mentioned that the community has been waiting for justice for the last 36 years. "We have assembled here to reiterate our demand for a policy that will pave the way for our dignified return and rehabilitation in our homeland. We also paid tributes to all those community members who lost their lives in terrorist attacks,&rdquo; Raina said, leading one of the protests.

The quantum of sentence will be decided on January 17.
Andrabi was charged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) with waging war against India through hate speeches, as well as criminal conspiracy and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), along with two associates.&nbsp;
Andrabi, who founded the all-women separatist group Dukhtaraan-e-Millat (DeM) in 1987, was arrested in April 2018. The group was subsequently banned.&nbsp;

Defence sources said that the Indian Army implemented counter-Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) measures after drones were spotted along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. Around 7 pm, troops fired upon a few Pakistani drones when they entered Indian territory over Dunga Gala in the Chingus area of Rajouri. The drones subsequently vanished and are believed to have retreated to the other side, officials said.
Officials noted that army personnel detected the movement of two drone-like objects over the forward Dheri Dhara village around 7.35 pm and fired several live rounds to target them.
However, the suspected drones moved toward Kalali before returning, officials said, adding that a search operation was initiated to ensure no weapons or narcotics were airdropped by the drones.
On Sunday, troops guarding the Nowshera sector fired medium and light machine guns after observing drone activity over Gania-Kalsian village.
On the same day, drone movements were also detected over Khabbar village in Teryath, Kalakote in Rajouri, Tain-Topa in the Mankote area of Poonch district, and Chak Babral village in the Ramgarh sector of Samba. However, those flying objects returned within a few minutes.
Earlier on Friday night, security forces recovered an arms consignment, dropped by a drone from Pakistan, in Paloora village of Ghagwal near the International Border in Samba. The recovery included two pistols, three magazines, 16 rounds and a grenade.

The chief minister also said that accountability must be fixed if standards were not maintained at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College. Supernumerary seats are additional seats created over and above the intake approved by an authority.
"The Health Minister is standing here with me. Yesterday, she was with me in Samba. We have discussed this issue thoroughly and, as I said yesterday in Samba after the issuance of the order, these students have passed the NEET examination in a lawful manner. They have merit," Abdullah told reporters.

"It is our legal responsibility to accommodate them. We will adjust them by creating supernumerary seats in colleges close to their homes so that their education does not suffer,&rdquo; he said. He said adjusting the students was not a difficult task.
"We will do it," he added.
However, the chief minister said that the government must also reflect on the injustice done to students' futures in the long run by shutting down the medical college.
"Today, out of 50 seats, 40 were taken by Muslim students and objections were raised. But if, over time, the number of seats in this college had gradually increased to 400&ndash;500, it is possible that 250&ndash;300 students in the future would have been from Jammu. Where will those students go now?" he asked.
Taking a dig at the BJP and others in Jammu, Abdullah said aspirants across the country struggle to secure medical college seats.
"We are perhaps the only place where we received a fully built medical college and yet got it shut down due to protests," he said.
Responding to questions on inspections by the National Medical Commission (NMC) at other colleges, the chief minister asked who conducted the inspections and how the college was cleared.
"You should question the university and its office-bearers from top to bottom&mdash;why, after building a medical college, did it fail to pass inspection?" he said.
On the National Medical Commission&rsquo;s assertion that norms were not fulfilled, Abdullah said the matter was even more unfortunate.
"Who heads this university and who is its Chancellor? They should also be questioned. Instead of questioning me alone, ask them as well," he said.
He reiterated that accountability must be fixed if standards are not maintained.
"If today the BJP is happy that the university failed to maintain standards, then who is responsible and what action will be taken? We will adjust these 50 students, but someone must answer for the damage done to students&rsquo; futures," he said.
On whether the government intended to take back financial aid given to the institution, Abdullah said, "The aid was given to the university. We are not the kind of people who give money and then take it back."
Commenting on unemployment and criticism that he speaks too much, the chief minister said he had never shied away from any issue.
"Tell me which issue I have remained silent on. There is none. If anyone wants further answers, the Assembly session is coming up. Members can raise questions there, and we will respond," he said.

A video and photos of the cricketer, Furqan Ul Haq, were circulated online after he was seen displaying the flag on his helmet during the Jammu and Kashmir Champions League here on Thursday.
"Yesterday, a video circulating on social media showed a cricket player, Furqan Ul Haq, resident of Tangipuna, Pulwama, playing cricket at K C Door in Muthi, while displaying a Palestine logo on his helmet," the spokesperson said.
He said that in view of the "sensitivity of the matter and its potential public order implications", a 14-day preliminary enquiry under Section 173(3) of the BNSS has been initiated at the Domana police station to ascertain the facts, intent and background of the individual and "any possible linkages".
The tournament started on December 29 in Jammu.
The Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association maintained that it has no role, engagement or association with the tournament, as it is a private affair and not recognised by the association.
This is the second cricket league in the UT to be hit with controversy, following the collapse of the privately-run Indian Heaven Premier League (IHPL), whose organisers allegedly fled Srinagar on November 1 after duping players, officials, broadcasters and hoteliers.
The IHPL, which began on October 25 at Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium with international stars such as Chris Gayle, Martin Guptill and Thisara Perera, folded after only 12 of the 27 scheduled matches, leaving around 60 cricketers -- including former India players Praveen Kumar, Iqbal Abdullah and Parvez Rasool -- along with umpires and staff, stranded.

Due to a cloud cover, the night temperatures remained higher than the seasonal average and settled above the freezing point at most places, officials said.
