After a brief respite, cold conditions intensified in Kashmir as the night temperatures dropped and settled below the freezing point at most places in the valley, officials said on Friday.
Pulwama town was the coldest recorded place with a minimum of minus 4 degrees Celsius on Thursday night, they said.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 2.1 degrees Celsius, two degrees down from the previous night's 0.2 degrees Celsius, the officials said.
A thick layer of fog engulfed Srinagar and most other parts of the valley, especially near water bodies, during the early hours.
In south Kashmir, Pahalgam, one of the base camps for the Amarnath Yatra, recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius. Kokernag and Qazigund recorded a low of 0.5 degrees and minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, respectively, they said.
The temperature in Kupwara in north Kashmir settled at minus 2.8 degrees Celsius, they said.
In Gulmarg, the minimum temperature settled above the freezing point at 1.0 degrees Celsius, the weather officials said.
The Kashmir Valley is bracing for the onset of Chillai-Kalan on December 21 as chances of snowfall are with highest in the period, with temperatures dropping sharply across the valley. Chillai-Kalan ends on January 30.
So far this winter, the valley has not witnessed any major wet spell, officials said.
The dry weather so far has led to an increase in ailments like cough and the common cold, but the meteorological department (MeT) has forecast a spell of wet weather on December 20-21, coinciding with the onset of 'Chillai-Kalan'.
Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of Kashmir, while light to moderate precipitation may affect the plains, ending the dry spell, the MeT said.

However, the valley has so far not experienced any major wet spell this winter, with prolonged dry conditions contributing to a rise in ailments such as cough and common cold.
Meanwhile, sub-zero night temperatures continued across most parts of Kashmir.
Srinagar recorded a minimum of minus 1.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, slightly higher than Monday&rsquo;s minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
Dense fog enveloped the city and surrounding areas, especially near water bodies, during the early morning hours.
In south Kashmir, Qazigund registered a low of minus 3 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag recorded minus 0.1 degrees Celsius.
Kupwara in north Kashmir saw temperatures drop to minus 2.2 degrees Celsius.
Gulmarg remained above freezing with a minimum of 1.6 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam logged a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.
Shopian and Pulwama emerged as the coldest places in Jammu and Kashmir, with both towns recording a minimum temperature of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius.

Security forces searched for terrorists in Udhampur on Tuesday, a day after a policeman was killed in a gunfight there, a police officer said.
During the encounter on Monday, one terrorist was believed to have been injured, while two policemen suffered minor bullet wounds. "The operation has been resumed in the area to track down the holed-up terrorists. The cordon has been further strengthened," the officer told PTI.
A joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) of police, along with the army and the CRPF, is on the job with sniffer dogs, the officer said.
On Monday, forces got locked in a gunfight with terrorists in Soan village of the Majalta area in Udhampur. The village was raided by the police on a tip-off about the presence of three terrorists, believed to be affiliated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit.
The encounter took place in the besieged village around 6 pm and continued for some time, resulting in injuries to one SOG jawan, Amjad Pathan, son of Bashrat Khan. Pathan, a resident of Salva, Mendhar in Poonch district, later succumbed.
"A very small SOG team engaged the terrorists. Combing of the forest has been impeded due to darkness and treacherous terrain," IGP Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti said in a social media post.
Udhampur's Basantgarh lies on the route traditionally used by Pakistani terrorists to enter from the International Border in Kathua and move to Doda and Kishtwar districts in Jammu, and further into the Kashmir Valley. The area has witnessed several encounters and terror incidents in the past.
Pathan's body awaits a post-mortem, and once it has been done, a wreath-laying ceremony will be undertaken in Udhampur, the officer said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday carried out raids at eight locations in Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts of Kashmir in connection with a "white-collar" terror module that was behind a car blast near Delhi's Red Fort, officials said here.
The NIA teams conducted searches at the residence of Moulvi Irfan Ahmad Wagay in Shopian, officials said. Wagay has emerged as the mastermind of the radicalisation and recruitment of the 'white-collar' terror module busted early last month.
He was arrested by police in October, and the NIA took him into custody last month after taking over the probe into the car blast that left 15 people dead and several others injured.
Raids were also carried out at Koil, Chandgam, Malangpora and Samboora areas of Pulwama district, officials said, adding these locations were linked to people associated with the Delhi car blast case.
Additionally, the agency searched the residence of Dr Adeel Ahmad Rather, who was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur in the first week of November.

Devyani Rana, who has been leading from the beginning, secured 42,350 votes, defeating Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) candidate Harsh Dev Singh, who polled 17,703 votes.
National Conference's Shamim Begum finished third with 10,872 votes.
As the news of her victory spread, Rana received a rousing reception from BJP workers at the counting centre complex.
Rana, who was garlanded on her arrival at the centre, said she thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J P Nadda and other party leaders for depositing faith in her.
"My victory goes to all the voters who cast their votes in my favour and to the party leadership for the confidence they have shown in me," she told reporters in Jammu.
On the bypoll outcome, she said, "We are deeply grateful for the warm welcome we received, just as every household and family in Nagrota had blessed Rana Sahab in 2024. Today, people have extended their blessings to us with the same love and support. We dedicate this victory to Rana Sahab as a mark of respect. We wish to serve the people just as he did."
An economics graduate from the University of California, Devyani Rana manages her family's media and automobile businesses.
She said she intends to bring a "fresh, professional approach" to politics while upholding the BJP's principles of service and integrity.
"I believe in a 360-degree view of development -- inclusive, participatory, and empowering. My focus will be on strengthening villages, panchayats, and the entire constituency to ensure growth that benefits every section of the society," she said.
The counting of votes was conducted at the Government Polytechnic College in Gandhi Nagar.
The Nagrota bypoll held on November 11 witnessed a voter turnout of more than 75 per cent.
Devyani Rana is the daughter of former Nagrota MLA Devender Singh Rana, whose death necessitated the bypoll. He was elected from the constituency in the 2024 assembly elections but died last year.
Rana was pitted against National Conference (NC) nominee and sitting District Development Council member Shamim Begum and JKNPP president Harsh Dev Singh, a former state education minister and three-time MLA from Ramnagar.
Nagrota has alternated between the BJP and the NC in the last five Assembly elections, since 1996.
The Congress has not fielded a candidate and has not formally joined the NC campaign despite being part of the alliance at the state level.

A gun battle broke out between terrorists and security forces on Wednesday in Kishtwar district, officials said.
"In an intelligence-based operation, launched in coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police early this morning, alert troops of the White Knight Corps established contact with terrorists in the general area of Chhatru," the White Knight Corps said in a post on X.
"The operation is in progress," it said. The forces are battling against at least two to three terrorists, and there was a report of one jawan sustaining a minor injury.
Security forces are continuously monitoring the movement of terrorists in the mountainous district, resulting in multiple encounters in the belt which borders Doda and Udhampur districts.
Kishtwar has seen six encounters in the past seven months as forces continue their hunt for Pakistan-based terrorists hiding in these hills.
On September 21, a group of terrorists was engaged in a gunfight in the Chhatru area. On September 13, two army men, one of them a junior commissioned officer, were killed and two more injured in an encounter with terrorists in the Naidgram area of Chhatru.
Violent confrontations took place in Dul and Chhatru belts on August 11 and July 2, but the terrorists managed to escape.
On May 22, a soldier and two terrorists were killed in an encounter in the Singapore area of the Chhatru belt.
On April 12, three terrorists were killed in an encounter in the Kishtwar area, while the army foiled an infiltration bid by terrorists along the LoC in the Akhnoor sector.

"Based on specific intelligence input by JKP &amp; corroborated by sources and agencies, regarding likely infiltration attempt, a joint operation was launched by #IndianArmy and @JmuKmrPolice in Machhal Sector, Kupwara on 13 Oct 2025.
"Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists. Large quantity of weapons and equipment recovered," the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said in a post on X.

"The operation against terrorists in Kulgam has resumed this morning after a brief lull in firing overnight," an official said here.
Two terrorists, including one believed to be a Pakistani national, and two soldiers were killed in the fierce encounter that started on Monday. An Army major was also injured in the operation.
The encounter erupted after security forces launched a search operation in the Gudar forest area of Kulgam based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists, who opened fire on the security forces.
During the operation, two soldiers, identified as Sub Perbhat Gaur and Lance Naik Narender Sindhu, and an Army major were injured in the gunfight, the officials said.
Gaur and Sindhu succumbed to their injuries while the officer's condition is stated to be stable.
A tweet by the Army's Kashmir-based Chinar Corps said that it "honours the supreme sacrifice of the bravehearts, Sub Perbhat Gaur and L/Nk Narender Sindhu, in line of duty for the nation. Their courage and dedication will forever inspire us".
Earlier, based on an intelligence input from Jammu and Kashmir police, a joint search operation was launched by the Army, CRPF and police in the Guddar forest of Kulgam.
Vigilant troops observed suspicious activity and were met with gunfire when they challenged the terrorists.
Initial reports indicate one of the neutralised terrorists was a local, while the second is believed to be a foreign militant with the code name 'Rehman Bhai'.
Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat visited the encounter site in Guddar, where he praised the joint operation led by the Army.&nbsp;

It said vigilant troops observed suspicious activity and, upon being challenged, terrorists opened fire, "prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire during which one terrorist has been eliminated and a junior commissioned officer suffered injuries".
The Army said another terrorist was shot dead in the ongoing operation, taking the toll of militants to two.
"One more terrorist has been eliminated in the ongoing Operation at Guddar forest of #Kulgam. One soldier suffered injuries and is being evacuated for requisite medical care. Identity of terrorists is being ascertained," it said.
The Army said the operation is in progress.

The administration has intensified restoration work and debris clearance in low-lying areas of Jammu city following flooding in the Tawi river, and has considerably restored water and power supply in the affected areas.
Officials said that they have restored 70 per cent of water supply and 80 per cent of the power supply.
Record-breaking rainfall triggered panic as the river Tawi, popularly known as Surya Putri, roared with flood fury on August 26, inundating hundreds of homes and hectares of farmland, washing away structures and livestock, and displacing thousands in Jammu city, particularly Gujjar Nagar and Peerkho.
"Cleanliness operations are being undertaken at a fast pace to remove muck and debris from localities and ensure they are fully cleared of deposits left by the floodwaters of the Tawi. The administration is fully working on this issue," Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar said.
Kumar, flanked by Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas and JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav, monitored the operations carried out by labourers and machines after weather conditions improved on Thursday.
"A large number of labourers and six JCBs are engaged to ensure the areas are cleaned as soon as possible. Officials are monitoring the process," he said.
On the morning of August 26, the calm river turned into a raging torrent, submerging low-lying areas, particularly riverbank colonies of Peerkho, Gujjar Nagar, Gurkha Nagar, Rajiv Nagar and others. Streets became waterways, prompting large-scale rescue operations amid panic across the 'city of temples.' Peerkho, among the worst-hit areas, was left strewn with half-buried vehicles, debris, boulders and uprooted trees. More than 300 people, including children clinging to their mothers and the elderly too frail to walk, were pulled out in desperate rescue efforts. But fear still lingered like a shadow.
Kumar said the administration is working in a proactive manner. "The Deputy Commissioner, Municipal Commissioner, and MD JPDCL -- all are on the ground, working fast to restore essentials. Muck and debris clearance is being carried out in the area," he said.
The divisional commissioner further said water and power facilities are being fully restored.
"About 70 per cent of the water supply has been restored, and the remaining is being done at a fast pace. Nearly 80 per cent of the power supply has been restored in the area. Work is being carried out on a war footing," he said.
As far as relief is concerned, he said the assessment is being done by the deputy commissioner.
"Once that is completed, ex gratia will be given to the affected families. All possible support will be provided by the government, as it stands with people in this tough time," he added.
He further said that full relief will be given to all the flood-affected victims, and all facilities and essential supplies will be restored very soon.
On water supply restoration, the deputy commissioner has procured private water tankers to ensure supply to all affected areas.
"It will take some time, but we are committed to fully restoring the facility," Kumar added.&nbsp;

The Indian Army troops on Monday scuttled an infiltration bid by terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar Sector of Poonch district, officials said.
The infiltration attempt coincided with the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to the winter capital Jammu to assess the situation in the aftermath of the heavy rain and flash floods that left a trail of death and destruction last month.
"At about 5.30 am, troops of White Knight Corps in the general area of Balakot detected suspicious movement near LoC. Fire was immediately opened by alert troops preventing the infiltration attempt.
"Own troops have been repositioned and re-oriented to ensure foolproof domination of the area using all available means. Troops are maintaining high alert in their respective areas," the army's White Knight Corps said in a post on X.
An intense firing between the two sides started again when the army search parties moved close to the scene of the earlier encounter, an official said.
The firing was on between the two sides when the last reports were received.
The official said movement of terrorists trying to sneak into the country from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir was picked up near Dabbi village of Balakot in the early hours of the day, leading to the first encounter.
Faced with heavy firing, the terrorists tried to flee, but reinforcements were rushed and the whole area was cordoned off for a thorough search, the official said.

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for traffic for the third consecutive day on Thursday due to multiple landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Udhampur-Ramban belt, officials said.
Due to the closure of the highway, over 500 to 600 vehicles are stranded at various places en route.
The 270-km-long stretch, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was blocked by multiple landslides at several places between Jakheni and Chenani in Udhampur, they said.
"Highway is closed for vehicular movement from Jakheni in Udhampur towards Srinagar due to damage at several places between Jakheni and Chenani. No vehicular movement shall be allowed from Nagrota in Jammu towards Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, Srinagar," a traffic police official said.
He said commuters belonging to Katra and Udhampur towns are requested to keep their photo ID cards to prove their identity so that their movement can be facilitated smoothly.
The men and machines of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working to clear the highway of blockades, which occurred on Tuesday following heavy rains and flash floods, they said.
According to the traffic advisory, the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag highway is closed for vehicular movement.
It said subject to fair weather and good road condition, and after getting a green signal from the BRO, traffic movement shall be allowed in a regulated manner on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari road.
LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil between 1130 hours and 1730 hours.
"No vehicle shall be allowed after the cut-off timing. Security forces convoys plying from Srinagar to Kargil and vice versa shall plan their movement in such a manner so that civil traffic is not disturbed," the advisory said.
According to the advisory, movement of LMVs shall be allowed on Mughal Road between Shopian district of Kashmir and Poonch district of Jammu region, subject to fair weather and good road condition, after getting a green signal from road maintenance agencies.
"LMVs and private cars shall be allowed from both sides on Mughal Road, i.e., from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice versa via Poonch. These vehicles shall be allowed from Behramgala in Poonch and Herpora in Shopian between 0700 hours and 1800 hours," it said.&nbsp;

The Army said alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged the intruders, which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire.
"Troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists," the Army said.
The operation is in progress, it added.&nbsp;

More than 5,000 people were evacuated from the banks of various flooded rivers and inundated low-lying areas in the Jammu region as rescue agencies and the administration continued to reach out to stranded people in flood-hit Jammu and Samba districts.
Most of the Jammu division, which has been inundated by flash floods triggered by heavy rains, continued to receive rain, although of less intensity. Efforts to restore water supply, electricity and internet services that have been severely hit are underway, but schools and colleges have been ordered shut.
Jammu recorded 380 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, making this the highest rainfall ever recorded in Jammu in a 24-hour period since 1910, when the observatory was established.
"More than 5,000 people were evacuated from low-lying flooded areas to safety. The Army, NDRF and SDRF are working in coordination with the Divisional Commissioner&rsquo;s office," Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on X.
He added, "We are ensuring that there is an adequate supply of relief materials and all possible assistance is being given to those affected."
Sinha said he spoke to Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Ramesh Kumar and other senior officials and took stock of the flood situation and rescue and relief operations.
The LG directed officials to ensure restoration of power, communication and water supply on priority in areas where flood water is receding.
Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Rakesh Minhas said on X that more than 3,500 persons were rescued in Jammu district alone on Tuesday.
&ldquo;The district administration, police, Army, NDRF and SDRF are in non-stop relief operations. Restoration of roads, essential supplies and other services is being ensured on priority and war footing,&rdquo; he said.
Around 20 to 30 low-lying localities in Jammu and Samba are said to have been inundated by flash floods triggered by heavy rains continuing for the past 38 hours.
A large number of people from Peerkho, Gujjar Nagar, R S Pura, Nikki Tawi, Beli Charan, Gurkhanagar, Qasim Nagar, Rajiv Nagar, Sher-e-Kashmir University, Akhnoor and Pargwal. Besides, most of the banks of the swollen Tawi river in Jammu district were evacuated, officials said.
Union minister Jitendra Singh, in a post on X, said Divisional Commissioner Kumar is in constant touch with him and is currently convening a meeting of officers from different departments.
The entire Jammu division, barring Poonch and Rajouri districts, is still receiving rain, though of lesser intensity, according to the divisional commissioner. The water levels of Tawi river has receded, but Chenab continues to flow close to the danger mark, the official said.
&ldquo;The immediate priority is restoration of electricity, water supply and mobile services, for which authorities have been working continuously overnight. The SDRF, NDRF, paramilitary, Army and Air Force authorities are closely coordinating with the civil administration,&rdquo; a note by his office said.
Schools and colleges have been ordered to remain closed, and the general public has been advised to refrain from non-essential movement for their safety, it added.
The historic Madhopur bridge, among other structures, have been damaged due to the floods. "Movement of traffic on this bridge on the Jammu&ndash;Pathankot highway has been stopped since around 3 am this morning."
The Union minister appealed to the public to cooperate with the authorities without panic.
Singh said the prime minister is keeping tabs on the flood situation in the region.
The administration has also released helpline numbers for each district.

The death toll in the Vaishno Devi landslide has gone up to 32 with rescuers pulling out more bodies from under the debris, officials said on Wednesday, a day after disaster struck the route to the hilltop shrine in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district.
At least 20 people were injured in the landslide triggered by heavy, relentless rain and are undergoing treatment in different hospitals, officials said.
With fears that more people could be trapped, rescue teams are continuing to dig through the mounds of rubble to look for survivors. While 30 bodies were recovered from the debris, two of those injured died in hospital.
The pilgrimage to the shrine was suspended when the mountainside literally gave way and stones, boulders and rocks came hurtling down around 3 pm on Tuesday, catching people unawares.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his prayers are for everyone's safety and well-being.
"The loss of lives due to a landslide on the route to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is saddening. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The administration is assisting all those affected," he said in a post on X.
The landslide struck near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari, about halfway along the winding 12-km trek from Katra to the shrine.
There are two routes up to the shrine -- while the yatra had been suspended on the Himkoti trek route since morning on Tuesday, it was going on on the old route till afternoon when authorities decided to suspend it as a precautionary measure.
Unrelenting, torrential rain for days together has created havoc in Jammu region.
On August 14, a cloudburst triggered flashfloods in Chisoti, the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata shrine, in Kishtwar district leaving behind a trail of death and destruction. At least 65 people, mostly pilgrims, were killed, more than 100 injured and 32 are still missing.

The decomposed body was sighted downstream and subsequently recovered by the rescuers this morning amid intensified search operation with the improvement in the weather, the officials said.
Sniffer dogs also helped recover a lower body part of another victim under the debris of a collapsed house but the officials said it is believed to be that of a person whose body was recovered on the first day of the tragedy.
The rescue teams are working at multiple locations, especially the major impact spot near a langar (community kitchen) site, sifting through the rubble using heavy machinery, including earth movers and sniffer dogs.
With the recovery of one more body, the death toll in the flash floods triggered by the cloudburst in Chisoti, the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata temple, on August 14, has risen to 64.
The dead included three CISF personnel and one Special Police Officer (SPO) of J-K Police.
A total of 167 persons were rescued, while the number of missing persons has dropped to 39 after fresh revision of the list on Monday, the officials said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, SDRF, Masoof Ahmad Mirza said the rescue and relief operation is going on at war footing and a team is being dispatched downstream to check the area.
&ldquo;The rescue operation restarted this morning with the recovery of one more body. The impact area of the cloudburst is vast and so it is taking time. We have cleared a large area upstream and now we are sending a team downstream as well,&rdquo; he said.
Army&rsquo;s Jammu-based White Knight Corps, in a post on X on Monday, said five relief columns of the force are engaged in the rescue and relief operations and efforts have been further intensified with additional medical teams deployed.
The flash-floods triggered by the cloudburst left a trail of destruction, flattening a makeshift market, a langar site for the annual Machail Mata yatra, damaging 16 houses and government buildings, three temples, four water mills, a 30-metre-long bridge, besides over a dozen vehicles.
The joint teams of police, army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), CISF, Border Roads Organisation (BRO), civil administration, and local volunteers are engaged in the rescue efforts.
Army engineers on Sunday built a Bailey bridge over Chisoti nullah, providing much-needed connectivity to the village and the Machail Mata shrine. The Army has also inducted a couple of all-terrain vehicles as part of the efforts to intensify the rescue and relief operation.
The rescuers conducted over half a dozen controlled explosions in the past three days to blow up giant boulders hampering the search.
The annual Machail Mata yatra, which began on July 25 and was scheduled to conclude on September 5, remained suspended for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday.
However, the authorities will allow a group of devotees carrying &lsquo;Charri&rsquo; from Jammu and is expected to reach the shrine on August 21 or 22.
The 8.5-km trek to the 9,500-foot-high shrine starts from Chisoti, located about 90 km from Kishtwar town.
The rescuers are utilising over a dozen earth-movers and other heavy equipment, while the NDRF mobilised its resources, including dog squads, to speed up the rescue operation.

Traffic is plying normally on inter-regional roads -- Mughal and Sinthan roads -- and commuters are advised to follow lane discipline as overtaking will cause congestion, they said.
"Jammu-Srinagar highway is closed due to shooting stones at several places. Heavy rains are going on along the highway. All types of vehicular movement have been stopped," an advisory of the J-K Traffic Police Department said.
It further said commuters are advised not to travel until the weather improves and the road is cleared.
Heavy rains have triggered landslides on the national highway near Sharda Mata temple in Udhampur district besides Monkey Morh and the Maroog area of Ramban district.
Men and machines are working to clear the highway of blockades and make it trafficable, they said.
