After almost five years of engagement and a postponement due to the coronavirus pandemic, former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern married longtime partner Clarke Gayford in a private ceremony Saturday.
Details of the event were closely held by the pair, but the ceremony is reported to have been staged at a luxury vineyard in the scenic Hawke's Bay region, 325 kilometers (200 miles) from New Zealand's capital, Wellington.
It is believed only family, close friends and a few of the 43-year-old Ardern's former lawmaker colleagues were invited, including Ardern's successor and former prime minister Chris Hipkins.
Earlier, police met with a small group of protesters who had plastered a wall with dozens of anti-vaccination posters outside the venue. One protester was also seen holding a sign that read, "Lest we forget jab mandates," on the outskirts of the property.

In 2018, Ardern became just the second elected world leader to give birth while holding office. Later that year, she brought her infant daughter to the floor of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
New Zealand, under Ardern's government, had some of the strictest coronavirus mandates in the world, which prompted several rallies during her final year as prime minister. It also led to a level of vitriol from some that hadn't been experienced by previous New Zealand leaders.
Ardern shocked New Zealanders in January 2023 when she said she was stepping down after five-and-a-half years as prime minister because she no longer had &ldquo;enough in the tank&rdquo; to do the job justice in an election year.
Since then, Ardern announced she would temporarily join Harvard University after being appointed to dual fellowships at the Harvard Kennedy School. She has also took an unpaid role combating online extremism.
In June, Ardern received one of New Zealand's highest honors for her service leading the country through a mass shooting and pandemic. She was made a Dame Grand Companion, meaning people will now call her Dame Jacinda Ardern.

Bidding for a framed copy of the document, signed by Ardern and the insult's target, political rival David Seymour, had reached NZ$45,500 (US$29,000) by Friday in an online auction.
New Zealand's premier was overheard muttering the insult following a heated exchange between the pair at a parliamentary session on Tuesday.
A microphone picked up an exasperated Ardern saying "he's such an arrogant prick" in reference to Seymour as she retook her seat after answering a barbed question from the MP.
Seymour, leader of the right-liberalist ACT party, petitioned the speaker of New Zealand's parliament for an apology by Ardern, which meant her comment was entered into the official record, known as the Hansard.
Ardern later texted an apology to Seymour, who came up with the idea of joining forces to raise money for charity.
"We are thrilled it's got such good support," Seymour told AFP Friday, with bidding due to close on December 22.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Ardern said she had signed the official transcript with Seymour "in the spirit of good sportsmanship and a good cause".

He added he hoped the signed document would go "for a lot of money. It's a pretty unusual occurrence and a good cause".

"It's very out of character for Jacinda, and I've personally known her for 11 years.&rdquo; He said it was also ironic because his question to the prime minister had been about whether she had ever admitted a mistake as leader and then fixed it. &ldquo;And she couldn't give a single example of when she's admitted she's wrong and apologized," Seymour said.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern got a thumbs up from 420-friendly netizens after she admitted to using cannabis 'a long time ago', during an election debate.
Arden faced Opposition Leader Judith Collins in New Zealand's second debate on Wednesday, ahead of the general election later this month.
She however declined to say whether she supported the legalization of marijuana, which New Zealanders will decide in a referendum with the national election Oct. 17
Roughly 80% of New Zealanders have tried marijuana, according to independent studies &mdash; more than double the rate for Australians, and far above what Americans report, too.
