The oldest Palestinian prisoner in an Israeli jail was released on Monday after serving a 17-year sentence for arms smuggling, an advocacy group and his son said.
Fuad Shubaki, 83, was released from Ashkelon prison and is "on his way to Ramallah" in the occupied West Bank, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Prisoner's Club said, which was confirmed by Shubaki's son Hazem.
Shubaki, a senior member of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas' movement Fatah, was arrested by Palestinian security forces in 2002 at the height of second intifada, or uprising.
He was accused of attempting to smuggle weapons from Iran to the coastal enclave of the Gaza aboard the Karine A ship, which was seized by Israel in the Red Sea.
The Israeli military claimed the ship was carrying 50 tonnes of weapons, including short-range Katyusha rockets, anti-tank missiles and explosives from Iran and the Lebanese-based Shiite movement Hezbollah.
In 2002, he was detained by the Palestinian authorities, and held in the West Bank town of Jericho under US and British supervision.
In 2006, the prison was stormed by Israeli forces and Shubaki was taken to Israel were he was tried in a military court.
He was sentenced to 20 years in jail, which was later reduced to 17 years.

Scores of Israeli settlers on Sunday rampaged through a Palestinian town in the northern West Bank, torching homes and vehicles in the worst such violence in decades after a Palestinian gunman killed two Israelis.

The deadly shooting, followed by the late-night rampage, is raising questions about a Jordanian declaration that it had received assurances from Israel and the Palestinians to calm a year-long wave of violence.
The rampage occurred shortly after the Jordanian government, which hosted Sunday&rsquo;s talks at the Red Sea resort of Aqaba, said the sides had agreed to take steps to de-escalate tensions and would meet again next month ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Yusuf Merhej, who lost three cars and a tractor, filmed some of the flames from inside his house.
"This is what happens. Wherever you turn you find fire. You find tear gas. Nothing good remains," Merhaj can be heard saying while filming.
Settlers burned at least six houses and dozens of cars in Hawara.
Attacks on other neighbouring Palestinian villages were also reported, according to Ghassan Douglas, a Palestinian official who monitors Israeli settlements in the Nablus region.
He estimated around 400 Jewish settlers took part in the attack.

Tens of thousands of Israelis protested outside the parliament building on Monday as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government formally launched a contentious plan to overhaul the country's legal system.
Protesters were hoisting flags, blowing on horns and chanting "democracy" and "no to dictatorship" during the rally.
It was the largest protest outside the Knesset in years and reflected the deep divisions over the plan.
The proposed changes have triggered weeks of mass demonstrations, drawn cries of protests from influential business leaders and former military men and even prompted a statement of concern from US President Joe Biden.
Netanyahu and his supporters say the proposed changes are needed to rein in a judiciary that wields too much power.
But his critics say the judicial overhaul is tantamount to a coup and will destroy Israeli democracy.
They also say that Netanyahu, who is on trial for a series of corruption charges, has a conflict of interest.

In a bizarre incident, a couple abandoned their baby at an airport check-in counter after arriving without a ticket for the little one.
According to CNN, the January 31 incident took place at Israel's Tel Aviv airport.&nbsp;
The couple frantically headed-off to board the flight for Brussels, leaving their child at the check-in counter, an airport official told CNN.
Israeli Airport Authority also confirmed the development saying that the infant was left behind by the couple in the hurry to reach the boarding gate. It added that the couple had arrived late at the airport and check-ins were closed too. So they ran towards the boarding gate and left their child.
This was followed by the check-in agent at the airport chasing the passengers, an official told CNN
The baby was later united with the parents and there is no further investigation in the matter, the CNN report added.

"I think this is an enormous milestone...Over 100 years ago, and during World World I, it was the brave Indian soldiers who helped liberate the city of Haifa. And today, it's very robust Indian investors who are helping to liberate the port of Haifa," Netanyahu said.

However, the announcement comes after the UAE normalised relations with Israel in 2020 as part of a deal brokered by the administration of President Donald Trump.
&ldquo;In the wake of the historic (hashtag)AbrahamAccords, (the UAE) will now include the Holocaust in the curriculum for primary and secondary schools,&rdquo; the embassy said in a tweet, referring to the normalisation deal that also saw Bahrain and ultimately Morocco also recognise Israel.
Ambassador Deborah E. Lipstadt, the US special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, praised the announcement in her own tweet.
&ldquo;Holocaust education is an imperative for humanity and too many countries, for too long, continue to downplay the Shoah for political reasons,&rdquo; Lipstadt wrote, using a Hebrew word for the Holocaust. &ldquo;I commend the UAE for this step and expect others to follow suit soon.&rdquo; The announcement comes ahead of a planned meeting of the Negev Forum Working Groups in Abu Dhabi this week, which grew out of the normalisation.
The meeting will see officials from Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, the UAE and the US attend. Egypt has diplomatically recognized Israel for decades.
The Holocaust saw Nazi Germany systematically kill 6 million European Jews during World War II.
Israel, founded in 1948 as a haven for Jews in the wake of the Holocaust, grants automatic citizenship to anyone of Jewish descent.
Other Arab nations have refused to diplomatically recognise Israel over its decades-long occupation of land Palestinians want for a future state.
The announcement by the UAE also comes after it and other Arab nations condemned an ultranationalist Israeli Cabinet minister for visiting a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site for the first time since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's new far-right government took office.
The site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, is the holiest site in Judaism, home to the ancient biblical Temples.

The attack, which occurred shortly after midnight Sunday, was the second in seven months to put the Damascus International Airport out of service. It caused material damage in a nearby area, the army said, without giving further details.

Election-weary Israelis will go to the polls on Tuesday, the fifth in less than four years, in which former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu will try to stage a comeback, amidst indications that the outcome this time too is too close to call.
The prospect of the next government hinges around two factors - the level of right-wing polarisation, not necessarily in favour of veteran politician Netanyahu but for him to lead the coalition, and the extent of voter apathy, surprisingly, in the Arab sector.
Netanyahu, 73, Israel's longest-serving prime minister and among one of the most polarising ones whose leadership plagued by charges of graft has been at the centre of current instability, is looking to make a comeback which would largely depend on both these factors.
Israel has a parliamentary system made up of several parties &ndash; none of which have ever received enough votes on their own to secure a majority of seats in the 120-member parliament. That means parties must team up to form coalitions and reach the 61 seats needed to form a ruling government.
The last four elections in Israel ended in an indecisive mandate, at times alliances falling short by just one vote in the Knesset. The results of Tuesday's vote is expected to be out by Wednesday.
It will be the first time since 2009 when Netanyahu will be running into the polls not as the prime minister.
He hopes that the anti-incumbency factor also boosts his prospects of a return given that the loosely garnered alliance of ideologically divergent political parties, built around opposition to his political leadership, failed to survive for long.
Netanyahu has left no stone unturned to ensure that right-wing votes "do not go waste" as per Israeli election laws where political parties have to cross the 3.25 per cent votes threshold, even personally getting involved in closing 'deals' between warring right-wing factions over seat allotment.
The right-wing seems to have benefitted from these efforts with opinion polls putting it tantalisingly close to a majority, but not clearly, even at the expense of Netanyahu's Likud party dropping in number of seats.
Current Prime Minister Yair Lapid is hoping his centrist Yesh Atid party will come in a strong second place.
Defence Minister Benny Gantz is aiming for a strong showing at the head of a new party called National Unity.
The final polls suggest that Netanyahu&rsquo;s party and its potential allies are hovering right around the knife edge number of 60 seats.
The general trend among voters reflects a tendency to remain loyal to their ideological inclination, which means that a lot of those right-wing voters who do not want to cast their ballot in favour of Netanyahu would still do so for a political party that would back his premiership.
A lot of voters who last time opted for Netanyahu's "friends turned foes" but felt 'cheated' when they opted to join hands with parties in the Centre and Left, and even an Arab party, to form a government, look to be coming back to the right-wing camp whether by backing Likud or parties that would support a government led by Netanyahu.
The resultant change has led to the rise of an unexpected kingmaker, Itamar Ben-Gvir, whom not long ago Israelis would treat as a fringe element not even worthy of being considered a part of the Israeli mainstream.
Known for his inflammatory anti-Arab speeches and stunts, Ben-Gvir is particularly attracting supporters in a previously untapped chunk of young ultra-Orthodox Jews, one of the fastest-growing segments of the country&rsquo;s population.
Polls indicate that his Religious Zionism party could emerge as the third-largest party in the 120-member Knesset (Israeli parliament) and help Netanyahu come back to power.
Israel&rsquo;s 1.3 million ultra-Orthodox Jews make up 13 per cent of the population. The community commonly referred to as the Haredim is growing at a breakneck rate with an average birth rate more than twice the national average.
Children make up half of their population with young adults between 18-35 comprising another quarter, as per local media reports.
The ultra-Orthodox have largely voted for two Haredi political parties &mdash; United Torah Judaism and Shas over the past several decades.
The campaigns of both these parties have demonstrated a huge concern due to the rise of support for Ben-Gvir among its voting constituents.
Ben-Gvir first entered parliament in 2021, after his Jewish Power party merged with the Religious Zionism party. While the Israel-Palestinian conflict may have disappeared from Israeli election discourse, almost 20 per cent of the country's Arab population still have a major role to play in deciding the fate of Tuesday's election.
A 'Joint List' of Arab parties in 2015 secured a record-breaking 15 seats in Parliament and a matching performance could have proved problematic for Netanyahu, but the Arab population is a divided and disillusioned lot this time out.
It is noteworthy that there are about 90,000 Jews of Indian origin in Israel but their representation in politics has been at best insignificant, and nil in the parliament in the last few decades.&nbsp;

Ruchira Kamboj, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said that there is "no alternative to the two-State solution to guarantee lasting peace between Israel &amp; Palestine".
"Direct negotiation is the only path that can lead us there," she added. Kamboj was speaking at a UNSC briefing on the Middle East.
India expressed concern over the situation in Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank. Delhi said that it has consistently advocated against "all acts of violence".

Even though Palestine aren't competing at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the red, green, white, and black colours of the Palestinian flag have become a common sight on the streets of Doha, or at stadiums.
Fans from different countries supporting different teams have expressed their support for the Palestinian people by wearing the tiny state&rsquo;s national flag as a mantle on top of their teams&rsquo; jerseys.
The fans have taken advantage of the global reach of football during the FIFA World Cup, which is being held for the first time in an Arab country. They have used the tournament to raise awareness and make a peaceful political statement concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Qatar has been vocal about the Palestinian cause often at the international level.
And it's not just the fans, but even the Moroccan team players, the first African nation to ever reach the semi-finals, held a Palestinian flag after winning their match against Spain.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries strengthed when India opened a representative office in Gaza. Though it was later shifted to Ramallah.
