An Iranian court has handed jail sentences of over 10 years each to a young couple who danced in front of one of Tehran's main landmarks, activists said on Tuesday.
Astiyazh Haghighi and her fiance Amir Mohammad Ahmadi, both in their early 20s, had been arrested in early November after a video went viral of them dancing romantically in front of the capital's Azadi Tower.
Haghighi did not wear a headscarf in defiance of the Islamic republic's strict rules for women, while women are also not allowed to dance in public in Iran, let alone with a man.
A revolutionary court in Tehran sentenced them each to 10 years and six months in prison, as well as bans on using the Internet and leaving Iran, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said.
The couple, who already had a following in Tehran as popular Instagram bloggers, were convicted of "encouraging corruption and public prostitution" as well as "gathering with the intention of disrupting national security", it added.
HRANA cited sources close to their families as saying they had been deprived of lawyers during the court proceedings, while attempts to secure their release on bail have been rejected.
The group said Haghighi is now in the notorious Qarchak prison for women outside Tehran. Activists regularly condemn conditions in the facility.&nbsp;

At least 14,000 people have been arrested, according to the United Nations, ranging from prominent celebrities, journalists and lawyers to ordinary people who took to the streets.
The couple's video had been hailed as a symbol of the freedoms demanded by the protest movement, with Ahmadi at one moment lifting his partner in the air as her long hair flowed behind.
One of the main icons of the Iranian capital, the gigantic and futuristic Azadi (Freedom) Tower is a place of huge sensitivity.
It opened under the rule of the last shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in the early 1970s when it was known as the Shahyad (In Memory of the Shah) Tower.
It was renamed after the shah was ousted in 1979 with the creation of the Islamic republic. Its architect, a member of the Bahai faith which is not recognised in today's Iran, now lives in exile.
HRANA also said that young Iranian woman Armita Abbasi, whose case has prompted international concern, went on trial on Sunday after she was arrested in October over protests in the city of Karaj outside Tehran.
In November US news outlet CNN, citing leaks and an anonymous medical source had reported she was rushed to hospital after being raped while in custody. Iranian authorities have denied the allegations.
HRANA and Iranian media on Tuesday quoted her lawyer Shahla Oroji as saying that Abbasi had been presented with charges including propaganda against the system and the court had refused to grant bail.

The vote to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term was 29-8 with 16 abstentions in the 54-member council.
Russia opposed the resolution and said before the vote that it wants an opinion from U.N. legal experts on whether the Economic and Social Council was legally able to oust Iran.
The resolution expresses "serious concern" over Iran's actions since September "to continuously undermine and increasingly suppress the human rights of women and girls, including the right to freedom of expression and opinion, often with the use of excessive force, by administering policies flagrantly contrary to the human rights of women and girls and to the mandate of the Commission on the Status of Women, as well as through the use of lethal force resulting in the deaths of peaceful protesters, including women and girls."

Iran&rsquo;s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei&rsquo;s niece Farideh Moradkhani has been reportedly arrested by the regime after calling on foreign governments to cut all ties with the Iranian government, The Guardian reported.
Confirming Moradkhani&rsquo;s arrest on Twitter, her brother, Mahmoud Moradkhani said she was arrested last week on Wednesday when she went to the prosecutor&rsquo;s office in response to a court order, it said.
Before Moradkhani was arrested, she allegedly recorded a video statement which was shared by her France-based brother on Friday. In the video Moradkhani had called on people around the world to urge their governments to &ldquo;stop any dealings with this regime.&rdquo;
The video is now doing rounds on social media.&nbsp;

 Police said an officer guarding the embassy saw three men with face coverings tear down banners and flags from a recreational vehicle parked near the building. Despite calls by the officer for them to stop, the assailants opened the door to the RV and attacked the four men inside, police said.
 Three of occupants were injured in the ensuing fight, it said. The assailants fled by car. German news agency dpa reported that the RV sported banners reading &ldquo;Iranians want democracy&rdquo; and &ldquo;Women Life Freedom,&rdquo; a slogan widely used in recent anti-government protests in Iran.
 There have also been large solidarity protests in Germany and other European countries protesting the Iranian government's treatment of women and dissenters.

A spine-chilling video has surfaced from unrest hit Iran in which an Iranian woman's last moments are captured just before she is shot dead.
While sharing the video, news agency AFP has identified the woman as Shirin Alizadeh who was shot and reportedly killed by security forces in Salmanshahr city in Iran.
In the video, Shirin can be seen sitting in the passenger seat of a moving vehicle before being shot.
Shirin was killed in September while the visuals of the incident went viral on October 26, as per AFP report.

 Iran suffered a “major disruption” in internet service Wednesday as calls for renewed protests again saw demonstrators on the streets weeks after the death of a 22-year-old woman who had been detained by the country's morality police, an advocacy group said.

NetBlocks, an advocacy group, said that Iran's internet traffic had dropped to some 25% compared to the peak, even during a working day in which students were in class across the country.

&nbsp;Iran suffered a &ldquo;major disruption&rdquo; in internet service Wednesday as calls for renewed protests again saw demonstrators on the streets weeks after the death of a 22-year-old woman who had been detained by the country's morality police, an advocacy group said.
The demonstrations over the death of Mahsa Amini have become one of the greatest challenges to Iran's theocracy since the country's 2009 Green Movement protests. Demonstrators have included oil workers, high school students and women marching without their mandatory headscarf, or hijab.
Calls for protests beginning at noon Wednesday saw a massive deployment of riot police and plainclothes officers throughout Tehran, witnesses said. They also described disruptions affecting their mobile internet services.
NetBlocks, an advocacy group, said that Iran's internet traffic had dropped to some 25% compared to the peak, even during a working day in which students were in class across the country.
&ldquo;The incident is likely to further limit the free flow of information amid protests,&rdquo; NetBlocks said.
Despite the disruption, witnesses saw at least one demonstration in Tehran by some 30 women who had removed their headscarves while chanting: &ldquo;Death to the dictator!&rdquo; Those cries, referring to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, can result in a closed-door trial in the country's Revolutionary Court with the threat of a death sentence.
Passing cars honked in support of the women despite the threats of security forces. Other women simply continued with their day not wearing the hijab in a silent protest, witnesses said. Demonstrations also occurred on university campuses in Tehran as well, online videos purported to show.
Lawyers also peacefully demonstrated in front of the Iran Central Bar Association in Tehran, chanting: &ldquo;Woman, life, freedom" &mdash; a slogan of the demonstrations so far. The video corresponded to known features of the association's building. A later video posted by activists purported to show them fleeing after security forces fired tear gas at them. At least three were arrested, the pro-reform newspaper Shargh reported.
Videos also purported to show demonstrations Wednesday in Baharestan, just southeast of the city of Isfahan, as well as in the southern city of Shiraz and northern city of Rasht on the Caspian Sea. Gathering information about the demonstrations remains difficult amid the internet restrictions and the arrests of at least 40 journalists in the country, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Iran's government insists Amini was not mistreated, but her family says her body showed bruises and other signs of beating after she was detained for violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code. Subsequent videos have shown security forces beating and shoving female protesters, including women who have torn off their hijabs.
Khamenei, speaking Wednesday to the country's Expediency Council, again claimed Iran's foreign enemies had fomented what he dismissed as &ldquo;scattered&rdquo; demonstrations.
&ldquo;Some of these persons are elements of enemy and if they are not, they are in direction of the enemy," Khamenei said.
Iranian state television, long controlled by the country's hard-liners, aired footage it described as women protesting in support of the mandatory hijab across Iran. Only Afghanistan and Iran mandate the hijab in law and by force.
Anger has been particularly acute in western Iran's Kurdish regions, as Amini was Kurdish. On Wednesday, a Kurdish group called the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights showed images of closed shops and empty streets in some areas, describing it as a strike by shopkeepers. The group also posted a video it said came from Amini's hometown of Saqqez, which showed truckloads of riot police moving through the city.
While the demonstrations have focused on Amini's death, anger has been simmering in Iran for years over the country's cratering economy. Sanctions over Tehran's nuclear program have seen a collapse in the country's rial currency, wiping out the savings of many.
It remains unclear how many people have been killed or arrested so far in the protests.
An Oslo-based group, Iran Human Rights, estimated Wednesday that at least 201 people have been killed. This includes an estimated 90 people killed by security forces in the eastern Iranian city of Zahedan amid demonstrations against a police officer accused of rape in a separate case. Iranian authorities have described the Zahedan violence as involving unnamed separatists, without providing details or evidence.

Iranian born actor Elnaaz Norouzi, who is known for her work in the Netflix series &lsquo;Sacred Games&rsquo;, has come out in support of the ongoing anti-hijab protests in her native country. She took to Instagram on Tuesday and posted a video in which she is seen stripping several layers of clothes to make a point that a woman can wear what she wants and no one can stop her.
&lsquo;Every woman, anywhere in the world, regardless of where she is from, should have the right to wear whatever she desires and when or wherever she desires to wear it. No man nor any other woman has the right to judge her or ask her to dress otherwise,&rsquo; Elnaaz wrote in the post.
&lsquo;Everyone has different views and beliefs and they have to be respected. Democracy means the power to decide...Every Woman should have the power to decide over her own body. I am not promoting nudity, I am promoting freedom of choice,&rsquo; she added.
Earlier, in a conversation with RJ Siddharth Kannan, Elnaaz talked about her own experience with the morality police in Iran. She recalled, &lsquo;What happened to Mahsa Amini, that morality police captured her on the roads, this happened to me as well in Tehran. This happens to women every day. What happened to her could have happened to me as well, or can happen to any other woman tomorrow. So we need to change something.&rsquo;
Elnaaz said that only her family knew about this incident until she opened up about it. She mentioned the morality police took her to an undisclosed location and revealed that she managed to escape them as she played smart, and had two phones.
She said that she gave them her German number and updated her family with her Iranian phone number. Her family then sought help from their contacts on the inside to help her.
&lsquo;I went to this 're-education centre,' they call it so. I didn't know where it was, I didn't have the address. They take your phone. Mahsa must have resisted, and they must have hit her head so much that she went into a coma and died. (At re-education centre), They take all of your information, they take your ID. They take pictures of you like you are in a prison. They made me write my name, take pictures from all the angles in the clothes that you had on. Then they tell you 'if we catch you again with the wrong type of clothing, it won't be this easy&rsquo;, she said.
22-year-old Mahsa Amini was detained by the morality police last month for not properly covering her hair with a hijab. She collapsed at a police station and died three days later.

However, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned the British ambassador over the United Kingdom sanctioning members of the country's morality police and security officials due to the crackdown.
Iran's Foreign Ministry called the sanctions “arbitrary and baseless,” even while threatening to potentially take countermeasures against London.
Jake Sullivan, U.S. President Joe Biden's national security adviser, similarly noted that “the world is watching what is happening in Iran.” “These protestors are Iranian citizens, led by women and girls, demanding dignity and basic rights,” Sullivan wrote on Twitter. “We stand with them, and we will hold responsible those using violence in a vain effort to silence their voices.”

Iran, which is currently hit by nationwide protests over hijab, recently refused its veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour an interview with President  Ebrahim Raisi  after she declined to wear a headscarf.
The dramatic turn of events happened in a New York studio where the scheduled interview could not be executed because of Raisi's insistence that Amanpour wear a hijab given the occurence of Muharram and Safar.
The veteran journalist in a series of tweets explained how 40 minutes after the interview had been due to start, there was no sign of the Iranian President, who was appearing for his first ever interview on a US soil.
On enquiry she found out that the President was suggesting a headscarf for the interview to happen and also referred to the ongoing protest in his country. 
Amanpour's stance for not wearing hijab came over the fact that the interview was in US, which does not have any law or tradition that expects women to cover their heads.
"I pointed out that no previous Iranian president has required this when I have interviewed them outside Iran," she wrote in her tweet

The death of Mahsa Amini, who had been picked up by Iran's morality police for her allegedly loose headscarf, or hijab, has triggered daring displays of defiance, in the face of beatings and possible arrest.
Many Iranians, particularly the young, have come to see Amini's death as part of the Islamic Republic's heavy-handed policing of dissent and the morality police's increasingly violent treatment of young women.

Police say she died of a heart attack and deny that she was mistreated. They released closed-circuit video footage last week purportedly showing the moment she collapsed. Her family says she had no history of heart trouble.
